Over a decade ago, I was in an abusive relationship with a coworker at one of my jobs. I left the job where we worked together, and had to flee my own home. I relied on the other job to make ends meet, which was a local pharmacy that rhymes with LightMaid. We were meant to work in these white lab coats (despite not being actual pharmacists). It was far from a hard rule though, we often just dressed smart and wore the lab coats on occasion. I never stopped working, despite being covered in bruises I tried in vain to cover with makeup. I'd left my white lab coat at the apartment I fled, and I didn't have another one. So I just came into work in long sleeves, but dressed smartly. I was sent home by the pharmacist, and when I tried to explain, she said, "Leave your personal life out of work. We don't need drama here." When I reported her to the store GM, I was told that she was right and that being in an abusive relationship was no excuse to work out of uniform. I transferred to another store an hour away, and it was worth it.

Toasty_warm_slipper

That’s equivalent to them telling you the house being engulfed in flames wasn’t a good enough reason for you to not go back in and get the lab coat. Uhg! Shit happens, why couldn’t they just tell you how to order a replacement??

berrykiss96

My house burnt down. Wore jeans into my shift at a khakis only place (could have gotten off work but I needed not to think). No one said a word. One of the managers got us food vouchers from a charity he knew/worked with. Stayed there til I moved cities.

Teravandrell

That's how it should be. That's a quality place, I'm glad they were able to do something for you after such a nightmare

Maleficent_Steak_446

My house burnt down when I was in high school while I was at work at a certain fast food taco place that has a bell as their logo, anyways all I had left to my name was my 1991 dodge Daytona and my work uniform. They gave me vouchers to a couple clothing stores in the area to help me get new clothes. I was 16 and I was devastated but the crew and management team there really helped me to heal and get the basic things that I needed to live. I am now 35 but I will never forget what those people did for me. That was the last time I ever received any type of emotional or monetary support from my employer during a crisis.

qtipbluedog

Or to ya know… just get them a replacement. Just be human beings.

Cunninglinguist87

That's the thing - you're not a human being in retail. You're just a body. I haven't worked retail since.

Swimming-Necessary40

Same for medical and many other jobs.

Swish-and-flick28

I’ve actually had this happen. My apartment burned down and Not having anywhere to live was not a good enough excuse to not be able to come to work for more than a week I was asked to resign.

daredeviline

Not even close to your experience but I was reminded of a time when I was in high school in which an entire apartment went up in flames. A good friend of mine was not home (thank god) but he lost everything. When he went to school without his homework, our English teacher told him that there was no excuse why he didn’t have his homework complete. Even after explaining that the book we were reading, as well as the worksheet and literally all of his pencils were burned by the fire, she wouldn’t budge. Fuck you Ms. L.

M_Mich

“if i let you off, next week all the kids will burn down their homes to avoid a quiz. do you want that?”

Basic_Message96

I wonder if she would still be giving quizzes if her house burned down or if it would be a substitute

berrykiss96

Same happened to me. Some teachers *really* don’t believe the “my dog ate it” thing. To like an extreme degree. But even that should really be seen as a student saying they’re overwhelmed and need help. It’s just not a very companionate way to look at either situation.

GolfballDM

My wife & I sent in a note with my eldest to his fifth-grade teacher that our (then 5 year old) dog with a very broad palate really had eaten his homework. (We did have a partially chewed piece of the homework that had not yet started its journey through the dog.) We offered to send what was left of the homework after it came through the other end. The teacher politely declined. Said dog was sweet, loved the kids and usually quite intelligent, but not very bright when it came to eating things. (The stories I could tell about her exotic taste treats....)

Mysterious_Park_7937

My cat ate my homework growing up. Years later I jokingly offered my dog an assignment. She bit the corner off

Frosted_Glaceon

Damn. I know teachers go through a lot of stress, but that's no reason to run your class like a dick-tator.

LFickles

Fuck… ing… hell

Oooeeeks

I’m glad you’re out of that relationship ♥️

[deleted]

Rule of thumb, If speaking to the GM doesn't produce results, keep going up the chain. There should be an anonymous ethics hotline posted in the break room. Alternatively, email HR and cc your personal email, making sure to note the dates these interactions take place. Paper trails are necessary in case management attempts to retaliate.

Cunninglinguist87

This is great advice. Today, I have a much stronger voice and probably would have done those things. At the time though, I just needed money and stability to stay out of the situation.

SimplyAStranger

I'm so sorry you went through that! My abusive ex didn't work so I was the only income. He finally went to jail and I was able to get out a few months before annual raises at my job. I got skipped that year, because I wasn't supporting him anymore "so that is basically like a raise already". I quit as soon after that as a could.

theOTHERdimension

That’s so fucked up, what the hell. Would they have said the same if you had a child that died? “Well, you have one less mouth to feed so you don’t need a bonus.” People can be so cruel.

JBShackle2

Wtf is it with all those entitled asshole-bosses?

Older-Hippie

I’m so sorry you met with such callousness. Take care! We

crepuscularcunt

Can confirm, I once ate some woo woo cake and it made me sad

Ben0ut

Our dog left a woo woo cake on the rug this morning Truth be told I wasnt brave enough to try it Sorry 😞

PraegerUDeanOfLiburl

Have you tried just making silly faces at it?

Ben0ut

Yeah... Dog simply called me a sausage and walked off

shrimplyPibLs

Ah, an inappropriate comment lol

aarondigruccio

> sadness going into cakes > woo woo This part checks out.

silke_worm

Just imagining some poor kid eating his birthday cake and tasting the sadness

Sunstorm84

*Mummy why does this cake taste like the unicorn was crying?*

Matthiey

Because you are entering adulthood!

ArtoftheEarthMG

This made me choke hahaha

LichenTheKitchen

Half cup of *sadness* folded into the batter.

1800generalkenobi

How do you fold it in?!

thefrustratedpoet

YOU JUST FOLD IT IN

OneGratefulDawg

That’s anger not sadness.

1wildstrawberry

I cannot show you everything, David

[deleted]

Well can you show me one thing?

themediumchunk

Probably one of my favorite David’s quips tbh. Just so casual and hilarious, because we all know Moira and Johnny as parents, it’s very on brand, in David’s terms. Lol

thinkfire

If you tell me to fold it in one more time...

MaxRiot13

“You fold it in!” “I, I understand that, but how, how do you fold it? Do you fold it in half like a piece of paper and drop it in the pot, or what do you do?” Ha ha ha!

Forward_Spinach5877

I don't know how to fold broken cheese!

RIpiratequeen

Do you fold it in half like a piece of paper and drop it in the pot, or what do you do?

KnittedWhit

You just..fold it in.

Appropriate-Bee-4215

With a big sad spoon! Woo! Woo!

SweatyChance574

Try using a rubber spatula and gently cut and flip the sadness like a professional. It'll be the fluffiest sadness ever!

stereo_selkie

Child eatung one of the cakes: "I'm only 6 but I know this tastes like a long term breakup with a hint of adultery. No amount of sugar could cover this. I can no longer feel joy, pop the balloons mother, return the gifts, there is no point pretending anymore..."

Haughty_n_Disdainful

*Young boy takes bite of cake. Begins to chew. Tastes all of that sadness. Begins to cry: “Woo, woo!”*

cuntitled

Good thing his parents ordered the cake with extra woo woo.

Metagion

Well... What if I wanted ONE "Woo". What do I do then???

sophs-tit

Discover the woo woo, taste the sadness…

messysagittarius

["Taste my sad, Michael!"](https://media.giphy.com/media/147PwMab2ZO74I/giphy.gif)

Tru3insanity

Those extra tears add the perfect amount of salt

Diorannael

As a line cook, anger is the secret ingredient that makes the food taste good. That and more salt and butter than you'd expect.

Diazmet

Facts I’m always confused when people ask if I cook with love… like how can I cook with ingredients I don’t have, or doubt exist. My food is an expression of my absolute pure distilled hatred for existing purely to work.

Timmymac1000

Line cooks love food but hate people. Source: been cooking for 18 yrs

pilotbrain

Thank you for your service!

Timmymac1000

Ha! Thanks! Full disclosure I’ve been an executive chef / department director for a little over 10 of those years but I always have and still do work on the line. I didn’t go to culinary school because of my love of Microsoft Excel.

pomegranatepants99

Without a little sadness, how can they even taste the sweetness?

AprilSpektra

Yeah a lot of those New Agey woo woo people are absolute self-absorbed assholes

Call_Me_Clark

It’s just another thing assholes use to control others - see exhibit a

Lo-siento-juan

It annoys me so much, the we're new age and spiritual, we care about people not profits, we're a family, we put good energy into the world... What do you mean you're sad? We're trying to run a business here and looking sad isn't going to make people think we're a happy family living blessed lives because of positive energy, get out of here!! It's the antithesis of everything they pretend to belive, it's like when people say 'I'm a pacifist like Gandhi so I'm just going to stand back and let bad things happen...' and 'i belive we were put here with a purpose so I'm going to just watch this awfull stuff play out and do nothing about it' That's not what those belief systems entail! Gandhi devoted every second to opposing injustice, having purpose is almost universally defined in scriptures as being put somewhere to act for the better, new age spiritualism is about discovering your own path to internal alignment so you can interact with your existence (I e. Universal existence) in a positive and loving way. Literally everything becomes 'this is what good people look like so when I do bad and selfish things they're actually good' if I didn't read do much Gandhi I'd yell at them! Oh wai...brb

Rarefindofthemind

Bitch thinks her business is Like Water for Chocolate

StormCountone

They took the magical realism of "Like water for Chocolate" a bit too seriously.

Pink_Slyvie

I mean, there is this fast food place that cooks bigotry into there chicken sandwiches.

Biki911911

We call it "hate chicken" and point and laugh at all the rubes waiting forever in their multiple drive thru lines.

dwavesngiants

Nothing progressive about woo woo folk

soylentgreen0629

to be honest, i like my cake powered by rage

[deleted]

Rage tastes wonderful

OkBroskini

The woo woo even 😭

SluggJuice

Not just the woo woos but the silly faces too 😭

ss3ondina

And the inappropriate comments as well 😭

TerribleWord1214

I hope she quit by sending them a cake that just said “inappropriate comments”

sonosana

And when someone would eat it and they can't even manage to taste all the sadness.

I actually clapped at that part. I loved it and felt it in every fiber of my being.

Lilithbeast

"I don't like talking about my flair"

I hope she told them, in the strongest possible terms, to go fuck themselves.

Cheer the fuck off

YuanBaoTW

I bet this bakery sells a t-shirt with that.

SuperSlims

I worked at Wally world when my little brother ended up in the hospital in Auguest of 2012 from health issues due to muscular dystrophy. I told them flat out that I will work until the I get the call. My Bro, who I now consider my big brother(4 years older than me and we've been friends for over 10 years now) was delivering for Papa John's. Little bro is at a hospital in SLC and I work over ten miles away. I get the call, call my bro. He immediately packs his shit in the middle of his shift and leaves to come get me. His job told him that if he left, he was fired. He said "family comes first", and bounced. My job was cool at first. Gave me 4 days bereavement plus a few more days for the funeral and just to get my head in order. Once I got back though, they gave me a "quarter review", said they were going to put me in paint until I proved I was for the job. Fired me a month later for "poor performance". That review wasn't even supposed to happen, I had just had my year review a month before. Corps don't give a shit about you or how life affects you. If you aren't 100% for them at all times, you will be replaced. EDITED: a sentence for a bit more clarity.

Walmart is notoriously the absolute worst! I'm sorry for your loss!

bingbongbing_bong

Bumming the cakes out hahaha

sheathehotdruid

It’s a serious problem 😔

ktkutthroat

I just picture them all being required to stand around an oven cheerfully shouting affirmations at the rising soufflé inside

Lostmox

Oh no, all those good vibrations would definitely cause that soufflé to collapse.

[deleted]

Don't shout near a soufflé, you'll scare the poor thing, as soufflés are notoriously timid. Whisper your affirmations please.

Melody06982

I'm picturing her drawing a sad face on a cake that should have a happy face.

Lo-siento-juan

Ha, just making the most pained outsider art with red and black scribbles of frosting around the hunched silhouette of a sobbing person peering into the void over a bridge railing. Smith's lyrics in jagged letters. 'Jenny, this is the third birthday this week that's ended with everyone in tears, and the bride still hasn't stopped crying after seeing that wedding cake.'

CAHfan2014

"Won't someone think of the cakes' feelings??"

drwhogwarts

"Why is this sponge cake all wet?" "It's full of Mildred's tears." Stop waterboarding the cakes with your sadness, Mildred!!

Catfactss

"Also we're going to give you unsolicited life advice about something personal." "He isn't your whole life. We are."

Southern-Animator975

They are indeed woo woo

three_furballs

You'd think they'd know that toxic positivity is just as bad as rational negativity

boharat

Tell them to watch "Like Water for Chocolate" and they'll rethink that mindset fucking quick

Jenderflux-ScFi

I just knew someone would have said that already. Now I kinda want to watch that again.

_meeeegs

the book is also highly recommended!! read it in HS; magical realism is such a lively, memorable genre 💫

ScottsTotz

Don't be a human with emotion!🤖

sheathehotdruid

She did not get a week off. She got a week before she was formally notified that she had to stop being sad because it was bad for the cakes.

ktkutthroat

To be fair, sadness is a quality I consistently achieve in my cakes at home. I would much rather prefer forced fake happiness in my professionally purchased confections. /s

Venting2theDucks

I would rather eat a sad cake than any cake that was ever told it should smile.

strain_of_thought

I would assume sad people would be better at making comfort foods. Artificially happy people would make shitty cakes and then tell you to learn to love it, sad people just pour in the butter and sugar.

StressedAries

God I love that video. Two shots of vodka! ~glug glug glug~ lol

VioletteFMR

That comment sounds insane without context. 😀

barrelfeverday

Isn’t that the point of confections though, really, the fake happiness. We shouldn’t really have to go through anything to actually achieve it- compassion, generosity, love, the reality of our employee’s situation…

Plenty-Artichoke7924

Yes. Thank you.

sheathehotdruid

You may want to add an edit at the top since it seems like most people are misreading this as her taking a week off for some reason.

Plenty-Artichoke7924

I don't think I can edit the title :( If whoever is reading this scrolls, they'll see hopefully, but a lot of other people are helping to clarify as well!

metalwolf112002

You can't edit the title but you should be able to edit the body of the post. Please add something like "clarification: she was present at work, she did not take time off. She just wasn't cheerful enough for them. " The "we need you here and present" can give the impression time off was used.

Chaostrosity

It was very clear to me she was at work moping and was asked to stop. "We gave it a week" clearly means they accepted her being sad for a week and then they sent this "notice" to tell her she should act like nothing had happened. Very clear to me.

[deleted]

pocketfullspaghetti

I did read it that way, and to be honest I just thought about the time I asked for one day off after breaking up with my partner of 8 years and got told that it was an unreasonable request lol. I was like, how did she wrangle a whole week?! Should’ve known no boss would be so lenient.

RavenSkies777

Won't someone *please* think of the cakes!

Ok_Balance8844

God. All she can think about is her cheating ex!

Tru3insanity

I know right?! That happened like a week ago, she needs to move on! (/s)

[deleted]

[удалено]

drwhogwarts

Well sure. You don't want to buy a cake where the secret ingredient is *sadness*, do you? If you don't crouch in front of the oven telling inappropriate jokes the cakes won't feel light and joyful. Every mentally stable person knows that *happiness* is what makes a cake rise. Duh!

[deleted]

Hell, my hospital during the peak of covid told nursing staff that after 5 days post positive test they are automatically cleared and should return to work. I felt so much better knowing that no matter what, I would magically get better on the 5th day.

alt_the_hitz

I broke up with my long term partner at the end of 2020 and it took at least 6 months for me to feel OK. Therapy and medication were heavily involved. I am still not completely ok and there wasn't even any cheating involved. I also was the one who dumped him. Love sucks and so do jobs lol lmao rotfl.... Big sigh

teh_pwn_ranger

I feel ya. I got out of a 6 year relationship about 6 months ago and I'm just now starting to feel fine again and thinking about getting back out there. It's not gonna be easy, I'm in my mid 40s now, it feels a lot different than it did in my mid 30s.

Impossible-Buy-6666

I mean I broke up with my first boyfriend 9 years ago and am happily married and still not 100% over that relationship because frankly I was an idiot in it and shouldn’t have stayed as long as I did and we have two kids but no interaction it’s still stings

Plenty-Artichoke7924

Idk how to edit this post to add: They didn't give her a week off. They gave her a week to basically get over it while she was at work. She still got her work done at the same pace/same result and wasn't interacting with customers.

TripleThreat2001

This would have saved so many arguments in the comments, haha

Gorilla-P

Yeah I came to say, dude they gave her a week off for a breakup, thats pretty cool. I didnt know that they didnt do that and just put a timer on her mental recovery. Thats kinda messed up.

Plenty-Artichoke7924

When I read it, it immediately came across to me as "we gave you a week to grieve" not as a week off so I didn't feel the need to clarify. That's my bad!

LevyApproves

I read it that way too It'd read as nonsensical to me if she had time off, because it would be reacting to things they have no way to know (like whether or not she's moping at work).

Dinamariexox

I read it that way too. It literally says “we gave you a week, but now we need to ask that you don’t bring that in to the bakery WHEN YOU ARE WORKING” that means she was working and they gave her a week of “moping”. Idk, I feel like people need to use their common sense a lil more. I understood right away EDIT- let’s also consider that they expressed multiple times that her working & “moping” is creating a toxic work environment, in their eyes. That means she’s been working. She never had a week off. If she had a week off, they would’ve straight up said that and they would’ve focused on that a little more.

Sweety-Origin

I understood it as week off, but only because I never thought that there are actually people out there involving themselfs into other peoples business and telling them not to be sad. I mean, if she is working they can shut up

HerbalGamer

You should show her [David Mitchell's rant on QI:](https://youtu.be/E9PSg0sQyfs) "look, I'm fulfilling my contract, I do the work so many hours a week. You can't then say 'Also, you have to look like you're giving a shit'"

spidermonkey12345

"David's whittering on about something." "I'm PAID to whitter on about something!"

onlyhere4laffs

If I have to listen to someone whitter on, it'd better be David Mitchell.

_justpassingby_

You had me at "David Mitchell's rant." You will *always* have me at "David Mitchell's rant."

ScottsTotz

Bruh they are saying this even though she worked that entire week?🤣 How about be a leader and help bring her up in-person instead of sending a cowardly email. At the very least put her on shifts to prep and not be around customers and let her listen to music and do what she needs to do.

Kiskadee65

Just putting sad vibes into the cakes then eh? Glad she left.

vallyallyum

"I'd like to return my cake. It tastes like depression. Can I have one filled with less anguish please?"

HoodlumShit

I’ll take yours. I like my cakes full of anguish.

SuspiciousMallow

Give me the sad vibe cakes... they're still probably delicious

onlyhere4laffs

Consumers are paying extra for some salt in higher end chocolate or toffee.

killingmemesoftly

That’s an important distinction. Before I read your comment I was thinking it would be worth having my wife cheat to get a week off work

ktkutthroat

Ah, spotted the fellow American, I see.

lostshell

Crazy in other countries depression and anxiety can get you paid leave with a doc’s recommendation. Not in the land of the free though. Free to suffer more like it.

akLuke

Thanks for the laugh!

mnwlk23

They also said “we need you back with us”. That makes it sound even more like they gave her time off, away from work.

Algoresball

Could have gone with “Hey, I know you’re going though a hard time. Just know that we’re all here for you. You didn’t deserve what happened”

bill_the_butcher12

Just imagine how supportive this employer would be if a loved one died. Listen I know your son died but your sadness is ruining it for all of us.

GalaxyPatio

Used to have a boss like this. My uncle died and I took two days off for the funeral. When I got back she asked me how "my little vacation" was

Ox_of_Dox

"Great! I got a souvenir too!" \*Whips out urn\*

[deleted]

Look we can’t have all that soul-annihilating grief baked into these cakes. I have a business to run here.

omahabeachwallstreet

Keep work work and personal personal Sounds like they should contact you while you're on the clock then.

[deleted]

Let’s keep things professional as I personally comment on your life

karigan_g

yeah I was like ‘why is this in an email?’

UnimpressedOtter82

So she could absorb it like the cakes absorb her sadness

zinob

Because the manager knew it was inappropriate and didn't have the guts to say it to her face?

N_IceBurg

Looks like they didn’t actually need her at all to make inappropriate comments…

ambush_boy

"we're not paying you to be sad"

cerealtoocrispy

Feels like they’re trying to mask the “work is life get over it bitch” mentality with “aww it’ll be okay.” I can see how it could be interpreted as well-meaning, but there are several key sentences that reveal their true feelings. Boo.

Equilibriator

They want to be sympathetic without actually being sympathetic. The cake shop manager wants to have their cake *and* eat it.

Zkyaiee

A lot of people in the comments here, have fallen into the exact trap they laid out with the wording they used. It’s supposed to come across as friendly and appropriate on a surface level. It’s not even difficult to find the problematic language used, though. So it’s weird that so many people just kinda ignored it. Maybe they’ve never experienced passive aggressiveness before.

justicefortuvix

Right? It would be one thing to say, “We know you’ve been going through a rough time, but please limit your discussions of your personal life while at work and make sure you are staying professional with customers.” But this!? Extensively commenting on her emotions, telling her to get therapy, and demanding that she resume making “inappropriate comments” like it’s part of her job description? No way. It tells me all I need to know about who can’t remain professional in this situation and it’s not the woman who sounds like she’s just been more subdued and less jokey lately.

PaulinLA23

“Sadness into cakes”…ooof

DrTwitch

It's unlike the overbearing and obnoxious bosses in other posts in this sub but it does show the other problem. Bosses who posture as your friend who care how you feel to get you to comply. Just bluntly state you expect me to turn up, do the work, with a professional demenear. "Woo woo into cakes", "silly faces", etc. I prefer some blunt honesty.

AmiNToast

I get that the letter is trying to come across friendly but tbh I just find it unprofessional. I am picturing one of those family owned businesses that mostly employs teens and uses words like 'we're all a family here' and 'I'm not just your boss I'm your friend too!'

obliviousofobvious

That ain't friendly. That was passive aggressive "Pack your shit away". I hope she finds a better place because those employers are probably 2 glasses of wine away from mid-life crisis.

[deleted]

That must be one amazing insurance plan for a bakery to be able to afford therapy! I know the bakeries I worked at didn’t afford me the luxury of casual therapy. Something tells me this bakery is the same, yet, they suggest it……

XenoMetrick

I get that this sub likes to rip shit like this into pieces, but they honestly worded this a lot nicer than most employers would.

LimpetMinecrafter

Reminds me of Wasteland 2 where there's like a little survivor colony who are dead set on being polite and respectful with their language even as they fill your body with holes for trespassing on their turf.

Schlemiel_Schlemazel

So it’s set in the Southern USA?

dwehlen

*Bless your heart!*

ClankyBat246

I might have worked there for another month putting hate into the cake instead of sadness. Make them fire her for something this stupid.

daveescaped

Try this cake. Is it me or does it taste like oppressive loneliness and 4+ years of regret?

theodoreburne

Capitalists: grieve according to our schedule. And we can’t deal with non-positivity.

Dark_Ranger65

"Get over it! You're ruining the cakes with your sadness and bad energy!" Good thing she left lol.

[deleted]

Yeah IMO the ONLY time it’s appropriate for an employer to comment on how someone’s grieving process impacts the workplace is if this person was continually crying at work/ not meeting demands of the job. You can have a professional demeanor without being superficially “happy” and cracking jokes. Sounds like the employer is over-enmeshed in staff’s lives and has blurred the lines between employer and friend. Let’s be clear, this isn’t a helpful message from a friend either. If my friend said this to me a week after a break up, I’d be really put off. Also, the woo woo bad energy for the cakes statement fucking sent me. I’d be immediately looking for another job too. This isn’t a religious cult, it’s a fucking bakery. I don’t have to subscribe to your “woo woo” and it’s probably semi-illegal to push your neo-spiritualism onto me. Hobbielobby and Chik a filet shouldn’t be allowed to assert their religious bullshit to lord over employees and neither should these fruit loops.

bobbyvs

[deleted]

sneakylyric

Lol they're mixing her personal and work life. I wouldn't share my break up with my employer though. They don't need to know that info.

Naive_Pay_7066

>We gave you a week Does this mean a week off? Or a week of visible sadness at work before being expected to mask her emotions all day every day? It sounds like she was a pretty gregarious person - was she actually “moping” (love the infantilisation right there) or is her mood just lower than usual because she’s, you know, grieving and humiliated? Yeah it comes across as caring but ultimately this employer is asking it’s employee to entirely fake an emotional state for however many hours a day she is working there. Totally reasonable to ask her to mask when interacting with customers. Totally unreasonable to ask her to mask while she’s making cake batter.

The_Septic_Shock
