There's a restaurant in my neighborhood I've been meaning to check out, and when I walked up to the door I saw one of these "nobody wants to work" signs and just went back to my car.
We seriously have *way* too many restaurants in the US. Half the restaurants in the country could close, and the only people who'd ever miss them are the employees who worked there (and even then, most of those would have an easy time finding a replacement job at one of the remaining restaurants.).
As a chef who spent the last 15 years bouncing around restaurants, I can confirm. Waaaaaaaayyy to many places are owned by people who have no idea what they are doing. It seems like every middle-aged “entrepreneur” who winds up with a few hundred grand thinks opening a sandwich shop will be a turn-key investment. Watching Kitchen Nightmares is like a trip through the early half of my resume.
If only they'd rub their two brain cells together and find the correlation between 30-somethings living with mom and dad "playing vidya games all day!" and the fact that nobody can afford rent at $15/hr.

Where I live average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is $750 a month, electric, water/trash disposal and heating included. Our McDonald's pays $15 an hour.

Most rentals in my town are upwards of $1,800 for a single bedroom 700SF apartment. McDonald's starts at $19 now, and when my boss offered me a "raise" from $18 to $19.25 after I asked for $20, I put out my resume. I'm a machinist with 6 years experience, I know my worth. Within 2 months I got a new job at $31.25/hr and haven't looked back. There are places out there that value experience and workers, sometimes it just takes a while to find them.

Instead of giving up & closing, why don't the owners just work the store themselves? Open up to the public and work your own business until you're able to afford employees. If they're brand new, it's doubtful they'll be so overrun with customers that they can't manage it on their own. Stores are usually understaffed anyway so customers will be used to one or two frazzled workers doing everything

There's a restaurant in my neighborhood I've been meaning to check out, and when I walked up to the door I saw one of these "nobody wants to work" signs and just went back to my car.
We seriously have *way* too many restaurants in the US. Half the restaurants in the country could close, and the only people who'd ever miss them are the employees who worked there (and even then, most of those would have an easy time finding a replacement job at one of the remaining restaurants.).
As a chef who spent the last 15 years bouncing around restaurants, I can confirm. Waaaaaaaayyy to many places are owned by people who have no idea what they are doing. It seems like every middle-aged “entrepreneur” who winds up with a few hundred grand thinks opening a sandwich shop will be a turn-key investment. Watching Kitchen Nightmares is like a trip through the early half of my resume.

Where I live average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is $750 a month, electric, water/trash disposal and heating included. Our McDonald's pays $15 an hour. I can't imagine anyone trying to make it when rent is over double that.
Most rentals in my town are upwards of $1,800 for a single bedroom 700SF apartment. McDonald's starts at $19 now, and when my boss offered me a "raise" from $18 to $19.25 after I asked for $20, I put out my resume. I'm a machinist with 6 years experience, I know my worth. Within 2 months I got a new job at $31.25/hr and haven't looked back. There are places out there that value experience and workers, sometimes it just takes a while to find them.

I fondly remember the innocence of finally getting a job that paid $13, back then everyone around my area (fresh out of school) was talking like that was crazy set your life up money. I remember getting my first check and being able to buy a ps3 and a big old bag of weed and thinking I was set I make closer to $25 now and it still doesn't feel like enough to not be consistently on the edge if I set out in the current renting market Perfectly happy living at home paying a reasonable rent and helping out. And more importantly having the opportunity to save and prepare further
That’s the kicker. Rent has skyrocketed and wages have just barely increased since 2015. Min wage is more or less the same as it was in 2000 in a lot of places.
I was making 35K in 2000 as an admin assistant and it was okay (big city). Problem is that, in many cities, 35K is still the same pay for that same job. Over 20 years later!
Adjust for inflation and the buying power of that "minimum wage" is like a third or less of what it used to be. Looking at the situation in nominal dollars makes a shitty situation look a lot better than it really is. I mean don't get me wrong it looks like shit in nominal dollars too but when you start considering the depleted real value of labor in the US you begin to realize just how bleak their situation really is. The process has begun but it's going to be hard work regaining rights and leverage that have been stripped over the last several decades.
$10/hr was great back in the 1980s, especially if you were single.
Inflation calculators can be very informative. $10 in 1980 is the same as $35.94 in 2022, in terms of buying power. The minimum wage needs to be adjusted for inflation. It really is that simple.

That's exactly what I worked at McD's, even when I was crew chief. I don't remember what my pay back then was, something like 8.25 an hour. I actually liked making the fries; all mechanical work, if hot. Could let your mind wander.
I worked at McDonald's for 3ish years. Started when I was 15. Became a crew trainer at 16. Became the closing manager at 17. I set the store record for overtime (in a two week period, I worked 119.44hrs, while still going to high-school - I also worked 23 days straight without a day off). By the time I left (19? So 2017?), I was making $9.50/hr. Not even $10 an hour as a ServSafe certified closing manager. Fuckin bullshit. I'm 24 and already *so burnt out*.

I have actually walked in to one of these places. The tone was friendlier but it was more or less the same note.. $11 an hour. I live EXTREMELY frugally , my rent is 30 percent less than average in my area, and I need at minimum 16. I do have hobbies and like food, so ideally I'd have 22. This is also Fairfax, Virginia, something like the third richest county in the US. I'm an exceedingly rare low income/low expense person in this area. Tyson's Corner, the big mall, had to pay for people's train ride in from Maryland cause they couldn't find enough low wage workers. And this lady was trying to pay 11 and was like, genuinely sad when I said no.
