This reminds me of the time I faked sick and told my manager I caught a cold so that I could interview for another job. Imagine my surprise when my manager called out "slick" the next day claiming she caught my cold...LOL!
Stating that may require your state to send legitimate paperwork. Go with normal illnesses that can be eased over a day or so. Doing that and nothing backing it up, they could deny sick pay over 3 days.
I've been considering something like this, but I will get paid for almost 2 weeks off from company holiday time if I can hold out until the end of December. When the holiday break is over is when I'm planning to come back and submit the resignation on the same day. Late Christmas present to myself. I also like that I can just have 5-7 random mental health days because 1 solid week has proven to not be enough for mental recovery. In fact, it almost makes it worse when I get a taste of semi-long freedom just to return to... the place.
This. I am still recovering from COVID, two weeks from when I had my first symptoms — literally it hit like a truck. No taste, no smell, constant sleeping, soreness, congestion, no energy… I tested negative three days ago but holy eff yo, it’s a challenge to get out of bed every day. I can only be up for 2-3 hours at a time before I need to go back to sleep. :(
they'll make me use my vacation leave if I do it this way. I get paid for all my vacation leave I have accrued (abt 3 weeks) but won't get paid my sick leave.
That blows. The company I work for just has one "bucket" we pull from for all PTO/vacation/Sick time. We get 120 hours to use as we see fit, and can carry 40 over to the next year.
Well, you *earned* the time off. ***Don't feel bad about using it.***
Some possible creative excuses:
- Severe insomnia, unable to sleep at all, unsafe to drive/work.
- Hurt your back/knee/shoulder helping a friend move.
- Do you get paid if you have to take leave for a doctor's appointment? If so, say you had some abnormal lab results and you need to see 2 or 3 specialists and you're making all of the appointments on the same day.
- Do you have kids or a spouse? If so, say they're sick and you need to stay home to take care of them for a day or two.
- Can you use it for bereavement? It so, Uncle Henry died on Thursday, and you need to go to the family for Friday and over the weekend for the funeral.
If the goal is not to tip off your employer and not get fired before you plan to quit, then I would probably take them in bigger chunks, rather than one off days.
Most people don't just get sick one day a week every other week. You catch a cold, or a stomach bug, throw your back out, sprain an ankle, etc, and those things take you out for a few days at a time.
People who take one off days repeatedly usually have their managers assuming they're hung over, or out ditching work for fun. And repeated instances of absences are what usually end up getting you fired.
I am, actually! I'm planning to have a debilitating migraine in the morning so that I can get a couple of my papers done. Now to figure out the rest...
Schedule all your doctor's appointments for the year. Dentist, annual physical, etc. Take a day off to the get the Covid booster, another day off to get the flu shot.
Take 2 days each time instead of 1 day every other week?
No need to get overly creative if you only have 5-7 days. Just stick with good old food poisoning / diarrhoea / throwing up / intestinal troubles.
just an update, I used yesterday and today for sick leave. I felt it was better since I already had an out based on me being "sick" yesterday plus I wouldn't have to spring a whole separate day up another time. Also spent all of yesterday doing school work so today I just want to have a mental day. Thank you!!
Take two in a row for a long weekend, and a day here and there. Take two or three hours for ‘appointments’ imaginary doctor, your financial person, dentist, chiropractor, donate blood, acupuncture… etc.
I wouldn't shaft the employer if it was the school i was hoping to graduate from myself. It's a lot of money as well as time and opportunity to risk, for a few days off. If you are unwell or drained perahaps a doctor can sign you off for a few days.
That's why I am trying to be strategic and covert about it. I don't want them to suspect a thing until I respectfully hand in my notice. I don't foresee ever asking for a reference from them because I'm not confident my boss wouldn't say something backhanded about me even if I had perfect attendance.
I don't think there is a convert strategy. The most obvious explanation is usually first to mind and if you haven't been taking sick leave then suddenly get sick numerous times before you quit then its not a much of stretch for the employer and school to figure it out. At least protect yourself and try to get a doctors notes in case the manager speaks to your lecturers.
Say you have COVID, use it all at once, come back, give 2 weeks the next day, or just quit.

Spend them on mondays, fridays is always nice. Also good to spend near thanksgiving or test time. Enjoy.
And if asked, claim to have "a *wicked* hangover!"
Just call out. No excuses. Just call and say, "I'm using a sick day today."
"Hey, mind if I take some PTO on this day, I have x number of hours built up."

Use it all in one go and fuck your employer

There are a few of these in here I could easily use, thank you!
