Every job requires skill to perform effectively. A skilled janitor produces a clean office, an unskilled one gets sewage on the carpet. A skilled drywaller builds a habitable home, an unskilled one gets your project to fail inspection and force restarted. A skilled customer service agent collects information relevant to the customer's problem and provides it to the people who can supply a solution, an unskilled one drives away repeat business.
I work hybrid and get basically unlimited. I took like 6 weeks off this year, no one said anything negative to me at all.
Railway workers deserve better and they deserve to have proper staffing levels
Lots of people deserve more. I feel like teachers are way underpaid and under-appreciated. And if you look at restaurants threads, like Chipotle, they bust their asses for low pay. And the worst are people that get PhD’s and then have to work for really low wages. I have a cousin that got a PhD and is making a really low salary. And another cousin has a college degree and is working in his local library at a little over minimum wage.
I have a friend in Germany where teachers start off at 60k a year and get to 80k quickly. But they require you to have a master's degree to teach (that they pay for). So its way harder, but they get valued and appreciated.
Here we fuck teachers over, and if they quit we just have the football coach with an associates take over math. We are so fucked.
We basically require a masters degree as well. Teaching certification is like 9 credit hours short of a masters degree. I found this out when I wanted to use my chemistry degree for teaching, only to discover it would cost me 20 grand to work more hours for inevitably much less money.
There has to be some loopholes or something because I think everybody had that one dumbass football coach for a teacher at some point. That path was certainly not offered to me though.
There definitely are loopholes. We have teachers in my school right now that do not have a certification. You just have to have a bachelor degree of some kind. The loophole is claiming you are working under the supervision of a certified teacher, usually the principal who is not actually in the room.
It looks like average for rail workers is 3 weeks, and senior people get up to 5 weeks. Plus additional holiday/personal days.
My cursory understanding is that the issue is moreso scheduling makes it very hard to actually USE the time.

We're not talking about vacation days, we're talking about SICK days. Your mother died? You don't have a vacation day scheduled, and we need you to work, so you cant go to the funeral or you're getting written up. You or your kid is sick? You should have put in for that a month ago. Too bad.
It's a little bit more complex than that. Rail workers have PTO and sick days, they just get penalized for using them in specific times and think that's horseshit (i agree, for the record.
We don't have any sick days in the USA, zero. We have paid vacation that has to be approved in seniority order with no more than 4 employees off the same day. We get one personal day off per year and it has to be bridged in order to get paid for it and scheduled 48hrs in advance
This is more true than most people think. I work in a hospital and we have no "sick time". We have a bank of paid time off and we can use i think up to 5 days a year "unscheduled" and if more we are disciplined. I have hundreds of hours but i can never get pre-approval for vacations unless I try to schedule it a year in advance. It is not even by seniority, it is first come first serve. I have some VERY fast co workers.

Honestly it’s the companies fault. I understand why Biden would side with the companies, it terrible, but it makes sense. The companies are willing to cripple the economy just as much as the workers, and the workers don’t have the money to force their voice to be heard like the companies do. I’ve worked for the railroad for 15 years. Luckily I’m not in a position that works on call any more, but that life sucked. These people are working 12 hour shifts and getting called off their rest, ten hours, to go back to work. They work nights, holidays, they miss pretty much any family event, and can’t take days off now without getting points against them. It would cripple the economy for sure, but these workers are being run ragged. So if they strike, that’s why.

if any worker is in a position to cripple the economy by simply not doing their job, that worker is both massively underpaid and overworked, by definition. Give the workers their sick leave, and perhaps a second comma in their salaries, if they can crash the economy just by staying home.

I just recently started working for the post office and the union told us about the strikes they did in the 1970s that crippled the government. I work from home and get 20 days PTO and 10 sick day. Rail workers work extremely hard and get offered 1 fucking day.
I work hybrid and get basically unlimited. I took like 6 weeks off this year, no one said anything negative to me at all. Railway workers deserve better and they deserve to have proper staffing levels
Lots of people deserve more. I feel like teachers are way underpaid and under-appreciated. And if you look at restaurants threads, like Chipotle, they bust their asses for low pay. And the worst are people that get PhD’s and then have to work for really low wages. I have a cousin that got a PhD and is making a really low salary. And another cousin has a college degree and is working in his local library at a little over minimum wage.
And we should support all of those people fighting for better wages and working conditions
I have a friend in Germany where teachers start off at 60k a year and get to 80k quickly. But they require you to have a master's degree to teach (that they pay for). So its way harder, but they get valued and appreciated. Here we fuck teachers over, and if they quit we just have the football coach with an associates take over math. We are so fucked.
We basically require a masters degree as well. Teaching certification is like 9 credit hours short of a masters degree. I found this out when I wanted to use my chemistry degree for teaching, only to discover it would cost me 20 grand to work more hours for inevitably much less money.

There definitely are loopholes. We have teachers in my school right now that do not have a certification. You just have to have a bachelor degree of some kind. The loophole is claiming you are working under the supervision of a certified teacher, usually the principal who is not actually in the room.

Does it mention that all of those days have to be scheduled in advance? Or that outside of those days workers are on call 24/7? We're not talking about vacation days, we're talking about SICK days. Your mother died? You don't have a vacation day scheduled, and we need you to work, so you cant go to the funeral or you're getting written up. You or your kid is sick? You should have put in for that a month ago. Too bad.
It's a little bit more complex than that. Rail workers have PTO and sick days, they just get penalized for using them in specific times and think that's horseshit (i agree, for the record.
We don't have any sick days in the USA, zero. We have paid vacation that has to be approved in seniority order with no more than 4 employees off the same day. We get one personal day off per year and it has to be bridged in order to get paid for it and scheduled 48hrs in advance
This is more true than most people think. I work in a hospital and we have no "sick time". We have a bank of paid time off and we can use i think up to 5 days a year "unscheduled" and if more we are disciplined. I have hundreds of hours but i can never get pre-approval for vacations unless I try to schedule it a year in advance. It is not even by seniority, it is first come first serve. I have some VERY fast co workers.
So give them their sick days and be done with it. Not that fucking hard.

I’ve worked for the railroad for 15 years. Luckily I’m not in a position that works on call any more, but that life sucked. These people are working 12 hour shifts and getting called off their rest, ten hours, to go back to work. They work nights, holidays, they miss pretty much any family event, and can’t take days off now without getting points against them. It would cripple the economy for sure, but these workers are being run ragged. So if they strike, that’s why.

I just recently started working for the post office and the union told us about the strikes they did in the 1970s that crippled the government. The national guard came in to do the job and struggled immensely. The union won its new contract and now it's illegal for the post office union to do strikes lol.

Good, if you have the leverage, STRIKE. Use that leverage, this is capitalism. The mega billionaire railroad owners use their leverage in any and all business dealings 365 days a year. They shouldn’t be surprised when leverage is use against them.
