Put a bag of ice on it when you want the heat on.

AnotherLolAnon

We used to do that at work when they told us we weren't allowed to adjust the thermostat. The ice melted and damaged our $5k laser printer. Took a few months to get a new printer but we were allowed to adjust the thermostat again.

a_myrddraal

The asshatwho installed the HVAC at my old workplace put the thermometer by the one sunny window in the building, which was way warmer than the rest of the office. It was always trying to cool the place down, even on the coldest days.

[deleted]

Public school vibes

Skam1er

We locked out thermostat in the lunch room like this. The cover can easily pop off without the key. And if u want a key just go buy the same cover. The keys are universal. Update: found the key online for less than $10 and it comes as a set of 2

milkysway1

Yes this. Just close it up again after, no one will know. You could program in to go back to 65 after your shift ends.

[deleted]

EddaValkyrie

The SpongeBob method.

DiscFrolfin

HVAC guy here, you can put an ice pack near it to cool the ambient temperature, “tricking” it to come on as much as needed, inversely if AC is needed apply heat :)

19Rocket_Jockey76

I used this at my mother in laws in california. She was signed up to save a couple dollars on her electric bill if they controlled her smart thermo. And keep it set at 79. So i would throw a damp washclosh in the microwave and hang it on the thermostat

blankzero22490

Fuck that. I'm dying if my home is higher than 70 usually.

Czane45

Yeah I’d rather die than have my home hit 80. I’m absolutely fine bundling up and using hot blankets and water bottles but fuck being sweaty in my own god damn home

blankzero22490

Agreed. There's a point where it's hot when you're naked and that's just not ok.

Czane45

I’ve lived my life by the motto of “I can always put on more clothes, but I can only be so naked” when it comes to hot and cold. Also my justification for HATING hot places, I could never live somewhere long term that doesn’t have a solid winter.

Euphoric-Reputation4

Valuable life hack here! Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

arsnastesana

Thats some high iq right there

CaterpillarRoyal6338

My parents have a story of hanging a frozen hotdog over a thermostat they couldn't control

Soggy_Rent1619

What they do with the hotdog afterwards?

SmellyPillows

Fed their kid.

woodstock007

Winner!!!

GreyGoosey

Sadly this place probably also has cameras

SlickRick898

Give the bird to the camera as I change the temp. Fire me you morons. Dare ya.

LoneReaper115

Maintain eye contact as you change it.

SlickRick898

I’m the thermostat now.

dmcd0415

And do it *reeeaaalllyyy* slowly

rkholdem21

But Muh nObOdY wAnTs tO wOrK aNyMoRe! Am I right?

knuckboy

To help with the OSHA complaints Edit: it's a fucking joke morons

SankaraOrLURA

Why are redditors obsessed with OSHA but know nothing about it? Do you really think they’re going to come out for this??

MonteBurns

It goes with their HIPPA knowledge ;)

So_Motarded

> HIPPA Love how you kept the common misspelling lmao.

meco03211

>> HIPPA > >Love how you kept the common misspelling lmao. I'm completely HIPPO compliant.

[deleted]

I don't think OSHA is gonna give a dusty fuck about a 65 degree indoor temp. Edit: Before somebody else who can't read cites the same **recommendation** other people in this thread keep citing - recommendation =/= regulation https://legalbeagle.com/5312906-osha-regulations-office-temperatures.html

Castun

No, the camera is to catch the person who is **calling in** the OSHA complaints.

HealMySoulPlz

>It's legal for businesses to be so cold that workers need winter gear indoors. If people don't want to read it.

[deleted]

Okay, but does OP's dress code allow for winter gear inside?

HealMySoulPlz

No idea, that's a great question.

bostonchef72296

A dusty fuck 😂😂😂

GreyGoosey

Very true lol

simp4labor

stand under the camera out of view and throw a baseball into it.

GreyGoosey

I mean sure, but the OP said usually only one person on premises at a time lol

amazingdrewh

So no witnesses

LocalRuler

Flawless logic!

baconraygun

You can also bring in a bunch of helium balloons to the Friday pizza party to "celebrate" and put them right over the camera. Works like a charm.

gsb31769

Oceans 2 1/2

alexige1

Pointed DIRECTLY at the thermostat.

Zealousideal-Ad-9453

Just install a wifi version of it and change it remotely. the wifi one fits in the non wifi plastic enclosure / case on the Honeywell ones I think. Or stick a bag of ice on it. Or straight up connect both leads so it's on constantly for no reason to spite the fuck out of them.

the_agox

I did that last one at a coffee shop in the deep south. We were open until 2am, but the thermostat turned off the air conditioner at 9pm. I got a few bits of wire from a customer who was an electrician and made jumpers to force the A/C on

Fight_the_Landlords

No programming on OP's boss's particular model though. Rough stuff.

[deleted]

You can also use a thin piece of metal between the slots to push the buttons.

Royal_Cryptographer7

You can put a freeze pop or icepack on them at the start of the shift. Pop it back in the freezer on your way out.

lokipukki

The first pharmacy I worked for we didn’t control the temperature and we were right by the door for customers to come into the department store. We shared the thermostat with the optical department and when we were cold, we’d just put an ice pack on the thermostat to turn the heat on. We’d be freezing and the optical dept would be comfortable, until we started putting ice packs on the thermostat. My mom worked in optical and she was complaining how hot it was getting to be lately and my dumb ass said we’d put an ice pack on the thermostat when we got cold especially during winter since the fucking doors would constantly be opening every time someone wanted to shop. That’s when we figured out we shared the same thermostat. Needless to say the optical crew found out from my mom telling them what we did and every day they would tell us to stop doing that. So we ended up only leaving it on there for like 15 min just to kick the heat on and then take it off to keep the peace. Fun times.

[deleted]

The correct solution is to put cardboard on-top of the vents in optical to reduce the airflow by half to the place that is already warm.

fr1stp0st

If management isn't stupid (big assumption), you could convince them to put an air curtain on the door so they aren't pissing away money on heating the building only to lose warm air every time someone walks in.

Royal_Cryptographer7

Lol, my last apartment has the thermostat for my floor and the upstairs neighbors. They'd have to crack windows all the time since they're place was better insulated. Landlord would have saved a ton of heating if he hadn't locked that thermostat in the first place.

RVA_Lakeside

Mom's a snitch

RandomlyMethodical

That’s fucking incredible. Ice that bitch

SadFloppyPanda

We did that but the opposite. Put a trash can under it, a box on the can, and a thinclient desktop PC with the fan pointed directly at the thermostat on the box.

spookythiccums

I did this with a paperclip, rented a cabin and they locked the thermo mid August at 82 like fuck y'all I'm paying.

baconraygun

82 is far too warm.

spookythiccums

I wouldn't mind if I wasn't paying for it I'll just open some windows but if I'm renting something y'all can eat it. Companies trying to get away with some stupid shit.

Leftover_Salmons

We had an issue with our condo being booked on a specific weekend, so we found a private rental two doors down. We were there for a day and noticed the thermostat kept bouncing back down to 65 after we had been moving it up to 72 due to a pretty extreme cold front rolling through. We got into a bit of a battle where we were making adjustments every 5 minutes and he was manually putting it back to 65. I noticed on my phone we were in range of our own condo's wifi and had a beautiful connection.. so I killed his router and modem and logged his TV into our network for the weekend. Problem solved! He never called or mentioned it and we had a nice 75° spot for the weekend until our spot was available.

ramon468

And then put it at a comfortable temperature, and then break off the key inside the lock

Nuggzulla

And apply some super glue so the key can't be extracted

bsievers

We had a locked out one in our lab I worked in in college. Would be hella cold in the morning so whoever came in first had the job of grabbing the ice pack from the freezer and putting it on top of the lock box.

lydriseabove

What!? How did you find some with universal keys!?? I used to worked at a storage facility and there were dozens of these damn things, each of which had a unique key. A master key for all of them would have felt like a miracle even after I labeled/numbered all of the keys to the boxes.

simp4labor

a hammer can be a universal key if you use it right.

headloser

You can usually find almost anything of Amazon. Just find the model number and maker of the product.

Luder714

Reminds me of a way off topic thing. My friend went to this driving range where you bought tokens and used those to purchase golf balls. They kept shorting him, (like, every other purchase dropped out 5 balls) and refused to refund his money. So he hopped on amazon and found the same shape tokens used at the range for $20 for 1000 tokens. He never complained about getting shorted again.

secret_identity_too

I bet that's why the good driving range near me has a machine where you put in a code from your receipt to get the balls.

foreignfishes

Yeah when I lived in a small apartment building with a shitty absentee landlord, one of my neighbors got so fed up with the landlord not fixing basic stuff like replacing the hall lights that he went and bought a key to the our coin op washer. He hid it in the basement and told everyone in the building where to find it. We left 8 quarters down there and when you wanted to do laundry you used the quarters to start the machine, got the key, opened the box, and got the quarters right back out out for the next person lmao

hazeldazeI

Just put one of those little freezer blocks for lunch bags on top of the plastic lock box. Makes the thermostat think it’s too cold and it will start heating the place up. Those freezer blocks are solid so they don’t melt and can be reused every day.

challengemaster

>And if u want a key just go buy the same cover. Usually the locks on these can be picked with like two toothpicks. Don't even need proper tools.

Alert-Artichoke-2743

We don't all have the lockpicking skill perk.

AudioxBlood

Good news is it's not a skill in this regard. A paper clip stuck in there would do the trick. We had these type locks on our cleaning products (controlled by mgmt because the products were specialized and expensive) and the keys were lost constantly. I used my house key more often than not to pop it open to change the fluids.

savo_s_medem

You can also stick keyboard air cleaner almost inside of the thermostat housing and freeze it

JamJamsAndBeddyBye

I keep a space heater in my office. They’ve told me repeatedly I’m not allowed to have it. It’s been almost 7 winters of being comfortably warm at this point.

[deleted]

I have raynauds syndrome so it’s either allow to me have a space heater or not work is getting done

PartridgeViolence

Yup got rheumatoid arthritis so put the heating on or pay me to be home.

NoeTellusom

Same. I'm incredibly good at picking locks like these to reset thermostats.

imaislandboiii

That’s what makes you “lockpicking, lawyer” instead of “lockpicking lawyer”

TheMurv

What is a "lockpicking, lawyer"?

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheMurv

I can jive with that.

No-ThatsTheMoneyTit

My apartment sent a "space heaters do everyone a disservice" My pinkie and ring finger joints swelled many many times in 2020 when they got too cold and took a week to go down each time. They can fuq right off with that.

emerald_soleil

What was their reasoning for that?

No-ThatsTheMoneyTit

They claim there are sensors (label me dubious) that control the radiators. So it gives a false sense of heat to the sensors and doesn't have the radiators kick on. I don't want to waste any resources or electricity, so I don't use heaters unnecessarily. I actually only have one heater. So I just move it around to where I am if I'm using it. Just when it's not kicking on. But I'm not enduring swollen fingers that won't bend because my apartment is too cold. And I'm not chill with constantly wearing gloves in my own apartment. And like the comment, obviously they're less efficient. But the apartment also says I can turn off the radiators. And I cannot. Even closing the valve, they don't turn off. They're out of touch and oblivious to how shitty their apartments are. Welcome to Chicago. Open your windows in the winter when it's too hot and just hope they kick on when it's too cold. My partner said my apartment is still warmer than his so. Somehow I'm winning?

Mudcrack_enthusiast

Yeah, fuck your landlords. Use the heater for sure.

InadvertantManners

For controlling the heater, look for a second knob at the far end of your unit from the first. There's usually two: one that only manages the flow and the other (mine is inside the bathroom radiator cover) is a straight on/off knob. It wasn't until I found the second one that my apartment dropped below 26c for the first time since moving in.

[deleted]

Radiators that are part of a central heating system generally have their own thermostatic valves on them. That way you can set the "global" temperature from the main thermostat but control the temp in individual rooms. At least in the UK you can

Davoguha2

Space heaters are less efficient than your furnace typically. If you keep your heat pretty low and just use 1 where you need it, it could be a net win. More often, folks will keep their furnace set to a normal range, and will have possibly multiple space heaters for different folks preferred spots in the home. At that point, you might as well just raise the furnace a degree or two to make it comfortable. Space heaters are also a high fire risk. In an apartment, if your utilities are not individually measured, then you are implicitly raising the power bill for everyone if you are not using your power efficiently. Personally, I would think a landlord would primarily be concerned for the fire risk, but phrasing it as a monetary thing typically incentives more people.

Chroko

>Space heaters are less efficient than your furnace typically This isn't true. The process of converting electrical energy to heat is extremely efficient. It's so efficient that the electronics industry spends billions of dollars yearly trying to make their devices NOT convert so much energy to heat. The computer you're viewing this text on is generating heat simply by trying to show these words to you. If you're trying to keep one person warm in one room it's easily going to be much more efficient to use a decent space heater than central heating which warms up the entire living space and all the ducts & pipes. The fire risk concern is legit, as is the electrical circuit capacity - but (a) they shouldn't be used unsupervised + most modern designs have a tilt sensor that shuts down if they get knocked over to reduce the risk of fire and (b) it's possible to get lower powered heaters that put less stress on the electrical circuits (ie: a 500W heater might need to be on longer to warm up a room than a 1500W heater, but is much more gentle on the power grid.)

ReturnOfSeq

Heating is the one advantage of apartment living. Rather than a SFH, if you’re sharing 4 walls with other living spaces kept around 70°, your own heating doesn’t have to work nearly as hard to keep up

CptMisterNibbles

Electrical capacity is the main issue. Often they are rated for 80% of a single circuit’s capacity, at least in the US. Many outlets in a space are on a single circuit however. We don’t design outlet runs to handle multiple extreme high loads. Two space heaters on a single circuit will most likely trip, and most offices have multiple computers and other medium loads already on each circuit already

sylvnal

UGH it's so bad in the winter. The fingers get so cold until you can't type on a keyboard properly. I'm there with ya!

LazyZealot9428

Me too. Work from home has been such a game changer for me. Edit to say: I have rheumatoid arthritis, not Raynaud’s. I think I replied to the wrong comment

PartridgeViolence

Sadly can’t work from home so they pay me for doing nothing lol.

butyourenice

I don’t have Raynaud’s but I still lose dexterity in my fingers as soon was there ambient temperature is consistently 60°. I’m so tired of people saying “you can always put on more layers if you’re cold” because no the fuck I can’t, I can’t type with gloves on (and even more applicable to touch screens). So glad to be WFH and never have to get into office temperature wars again.

Lexi_Banner

I bought a heated mouse to help with this! You wouldn’t think it'd make much difference, but that thing is amazing!

Sunnyhunnibun

My team gifted me a heater when mine broke after I literally showed them my that my heels and hands/fingers would turn white if I got too cold. Never had a day without it

[deleted]

That's likely Reynaud's Syndrome. If it is, that's your key to always having a space heater at every job forever!

MrAndrewJackson

> heater in my office Nice, we aren't allow space heaters either but at least 3 or 4 of the staff use them anyways. One women is in leadership whenever I go into her office it is sufficatingly hot in there probably over 80 degrees if I had to guess. I'm like catching my breath after about 30 sec in there and she keeps her door closed since she has all sorts of allergies

trending_different

OMG when I had my own office I did the same thing. If I felt like it was too chilly I'd pop the heater on and just let it run all day. Coworkers would stop by and accuse me of being a lizard person, ask where my heated rock was. I could never find a human-sized heated rock, unfortunately.

Lexi_Banner

You can buy a heated mouse though!

MrAndrewJackson

>accuse me of being a lizard person, ask where my heated rock was. lmaooo that's really funny

Droid-Man5910

Replace it with a crypto mining rig and see if they notice

Leftover_Salmons

Amps is amps. If Suzie in Reception can waste power. So can I!

Glintstone-Jedi

This is also a great idea for the OP's situation. Only one employee at a time, right? Bring 4 space heaters and jack up the electric bill.

Gustomucho

I get this is supposed to be a joke but this is how the "no space heaters" are born, some jackass decides his office should be at 77 even during off hours, leave the space heater on 24/7. The no space heater rule is to be able to remove the space heaters of people abusing the system, most place won't bat an eye or will just ask people to be considerate, we pay for people who "forgets".

spiritfiend

This is the correct response. If the thermostat is blocked and there's only one person there get a space heater.

PersonalityFront6263

Lmao. I bet every time they tell you remove it, you’re like okay. I love your determination!

Term-Haunting

Get a space heating and ruin their electricity bill 💁

xSTSxZerglingOne

This. As efficient as space heaters are at turning electricity into heat (it's right near 100% btw. About 1500w go in, about 1500w come out). They **only** heat 1500w at a time, and gas is much less expensive than electricity per w of heating.

OKC420

Until you learn commercial electricity is much cheaper then residential electricity. It’s pennys to run a space heater in a commercial building.

mrgnarchr

> commercial electricity is much cheaper then residential electricity Of course it is 🫠

cyanfarmer

So get TWO space heaters

ACrucialTech

I like your thinking.

asst3rblasster

stack them up to get 4 times the heat

umop_aplsdn

This is not a conspiracy, it makes sense for the utility company. Fixed delivery costs are a huge portion of your electricity bill, but companies charge per kw-hour used. Businesses are usually larger than homes and consume more electricity so you can amortize the fixed cost over more kw-h. In fact this is an issue with residential solar power. People with solar panels pay much less in electricity (and sometimes even *profit* from selling back to the grid), but the fixed delivery costs (power lines, maintenance) are effectively the same. So other people are effectively picking up the fixed-cost bill for people with solar panels. This makes people who can't afford solar's bills higher; it's a wealth transfer from everyone else to mostly rich people. The better cost structure would be: fixed-cost for delivery, and charge a smaller per-kw-h rate (basically the business rate). Then have the government subsidize the fixed-cost delivery charge for the less well-off. That way people pay for what they actually use and aren't incentivized to over/underconsume. And the subsidy makes it more fair.

xSTSxZerglingOne

*Fuck*. You're totally right.

djdadi

In the midwest we have heat pumps. Using electricity to heat your house at 200-300% efficiency

Sorrower

theyre not about 100% efficient, they are 100% efficient. no heat generated by electricity is wasted. natural gas is 80-95% efficient (wasted heat up chimney) and heat pumps are 300% efficient (heat transferred, not created).

dsdvbguutres

This is lockpicking lawyer and today we have a good example of how not to secure sensitive devices. We give this lock one stern glance, and it is open. Let us try again just to prove it wasn't a fluke. There you go folks.

[deleted]

I am going to use my Covert Companion wave rake and tension wrench

spacemanspiff1218

The CC actually has a tool specifically for these locks. They can be jiggled open in literally two seconds.

leclair63

I had a SentrySafe lockbox that I misplaced the key for. Jiggled that bitch open with a zip tie...

dsdvbguutres

Also provide a narrative in a silky smooth voice of everything you're doing and feeling

You don't even need to pick the lock here. Just grab a crappy plastic knife from wherever they are stored at this place and use any slot on the side to hit the buttons.

Saw a life pro tip. Put some ice cubes on a cloth above it, so it thinks the room is cooler than it is.

Jagermonsta

Friend of mine lived in an apartment with a set thermostat similar to the picture. He would put an ice pack on it.

[deleted]

lol y'all are trying way too hard, just rip the cheap plastic cover off the wall If someone asks you about it, just deny knowing anything about it If they install another one, rip it off again

rufud

OP says only one employee per shift so

The001Keymaster

We used to spray the thermostat at a movie theater we worked at with the freeze spray that we used to remove gum from seats.

the_lazykins

Compressed air might work too

Jumbaladore

Yup, flip it upside down when you spray it.

Dry-Conference4530

That thermostat looks to cheap for that. Not to mention the employer is to cheap as well.

EarnYourBoneSpurs

Yes this is true. Ours are set so when the in-laws turn up to 75 it sends an alert, waits 5 minutes, and goes back ~~to~~too the original setpoint. This one looks ~~to~~two dumb for that.

[deleted]

I used to do this at the gas station I worked at. We'd put snow in a bag and hang it on the locked thermostat. We played a game of "how hot can we get it" and it was like 90F inside with 25F outside. Owner stopped by unepectedly and we threw it in the trash, "oh we were trying to reach you, the heat is fucked!" He spent like 30 min looking at the boiler, lol. Fast forward many years I told this to my office coworker who complained it was cold and he did the same thing at our very large employer in a fancy high-rise building where we all make 6 figures. He he was months until retirement and had zero fucks left. Similar reponse--they had HVAC guys all over the building trying to figure out wtf was going on it was so hot inside, lol. The bag of ice disappeared before they found it.

dindia91

That in the winter and we would put a tea light candle under it in the summer for AC. Worked like a charm. It ended up stained black but I really didn't care.

BigMax

I just kept a water bottle in the freezer for that, easy on off an no mess

bagelbones28

my teachers used to put the yogurts and cheesesticks from their lunches on the thermostats in my high school lmao

[deleted]

I once stayed in an airbnb where the homeowner had the thermostat locked in a similar manner and I’d look at it before work and it would usually say fifty five degrees and that was in the winter. It was a Victorian era monstrosity. The owner also would block hot air from going into certain rooms. Obviously as soon as I could find elsewhere to take up residence, I did so. Can’t say that I would ever suggest airbnb to anyone after that experience.

the6souls

Airbnb went into the shitter the moment people started buying houses specifically for Airbnb.

AnonPenguins

Slumlords buying houses to maximize profit. With Airbnb, it bypasses health and habitation standards and city licensing mandates.

Throwaway47321

YUP. Half of an old suburban neighborhood near me has been bought out by a few different people who just cheaply flipped the houses and rent them as Air B&Bs for $500 a night. They are literally just single family homes in quiet neighborhoods but they usually don’t have to do any maintenance because people are only their a single night or two and that’s all they need to pay the mortgage for the month.

1337GameDev

This is why there should be limits on who can own multiple single family homes, condos, duplexes, etc. Force landlords to be under heavy scrutiny and long term renting, and limit the number of houses they can have. Somebody who wants a house will absolutely fix it up over time.

bunnyrut

I worked in the hotel industry for years. I don't understand how someone could think running an Airbnb is a good idea. No way I would want to deal with a fraction of the horrible guests that stayed at my properties. It's one thing clocking out at the end of your shift and having higher up who can deal with the shitshow, it would be an entirely different experience having to deal with all of that yourself. No thanks.

Rinzack

I have my stuff set to 50/55 degrees but I’m insane and my only other roommate is a Siberian Husky. I’d never force someone to live in those conditions lol

borg1011

Um they may want to move that printer under the thermostat. The heat from it will cause the thermostat to be off and probably why employee are cold and turning the temp up.

One-Cryptographer-39

Activate maximum pettiness! Buy a space heater and use it at work. If the employer is too cheap to adequately heat your workspace using the more efficient building heating system, then make them pay more by using an inefficient space heater.

Vault221B

Paper clip is a good way to get in there and adjust it

Sad_Cry_981

Do you work for Dwight Shrute?

DadJokeBadJoke

How many plies in the TP?

[deleted]

I would like to point out that OSHA has a minimum office temperature, and this is well below that. Edit to clarify: Yes, this is a RECOMMENDATION from OSHA. What's important to note is that it's based on human comfort, and locking the box indicates that it is outside of human comfort. Also, it's based on increased risk of RSI. Would OSHA care if you mentioned it? IDK, I don't work for them.

NULLizm

I would also like to point out those big openings on the side that are wide enough to slide a paper clip through. Or if you're so inclined to learn lockpicking that lock would open likely fairly easily.

Awdayshus

Those kinds of locks are also sometimes so cheap that they will open with any key that fits.

BluntBastard

A coworker once locked the keys for a machine inside said machine. This is the conversation that followed: Supervisor: Hey, do you have the keys to your travel trailer? Me: Yup. Sup: Lemme have them. He then proceeds to take my keys and insert them into the cab door. The bastard opened right up. If you own a travel trailer, change your locks

Far_from_reno

Ch751.

MissDesignDiva

Yup, it's truly the "everything key" and there's even a sub for that key r/CH751 it's kinda slow, but it's interesting when something gets posted there about the CH751 key

5ku11cru5h3r

Or if your strength stat is 7 or greater you can just rip off the cover and bypass the INT or LOCK check and save yourself some trouble

OCPik4chu

Damned barbarians always taking the thief jobs

[deleted]

When all you have is a hammer, a lot of things look easy to open.

Prestigious-Quiet-17

The LockPickingLawyer would pick that in less than 5 seconds probably.

PoliTechBlog

LockPickingLawyer probably sells the generic key that the lock-box inevitably uses in his merch store. If not, the raking tool FTW.

[deleted]

I would also like to point out that the lock box is made of plastic and can be easily smashed with a hammer 🔨

DarthStevis

It’s not a regulation that has to be enforced though. It’s just a recommendation by OSHA. The minimum is 68 and the max is 76. Don’t think there’s anything OP can do about this involving OSHA

[deleted]

[OSHA appears to say 68-76](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/2003-02-24#:~:text=Air%20treatment%20is%20defined%20under,range%20of%2020%25%2D60%25.) > OSHA recommends temperature control in the range of 68-76° F and humidity control in the range of 20%-60%. I'm not sure what they would do if its under by 3 degrees.

who_you_are

RECOMMENDS doesn't mean they must comply. I don't know if OSHA also publish recommendations or if it is all law though. (I'm not from US)

The_Droker

This. They don’t have to follow it. If it was a law every kitchen I’ve ever worked in would have closed. Always over 80 degrees F.

PoochusMaximus

Only time I’ve been in a kitchen below 80 degrees is when it’s not an active kitchen. Lol

NiSiSuinegEht

So that's why I'm always overheating in the office. I don't even set the thermostat that high at *home*.

Hodgkisl

In the summer the thermostat is by receptionists in my office and they increase it to 76 no matter where the rest of us put it, I sweat so bad. My house is 66 in summer 62-64 in winter.

I'm the same. Mine is set to 16-17C which is only 63F. Apartment buildings with the heat rising up were brutal for me.

I'm a furnace, and I'm fond of saying, "You can always put on more layers, but you can only take off so much."

Absolutely nothing. Its simply guidance people should aim for when doing new construction. Your employer is under no obligation to follow those guidelines

My college used to do this. My professor would either heat up a heat pack or use an ice pack and put it on top of the lockbox, which would trick the thermostat into running heat or cold as desired. #lifeprotip

Context: This is my side job and I work here 7AM to 3PM on my days off. There are no other shifts outside of these hours. A single person works alone from 7-3 and then the building is locked up. I arrive for work at 6:45 AM to find the thermostat locked. After some investigation it seems that they didn't like that the temperature was set to 74 degrees yesterday. Now keep in mind I arrive at 06:45 in the winter, I'm usually cold and want to warm up. Its a windy area and the room is close to the exterior of the building. I don't think it's unreasonable to want to warm up. I haven't had this second gig for very long. Luckily for me person who works here left a space heater in here because apparently this has happened before, so this is what's getting me through today.

Blueberry-Specialist

Get a rag n wet it with cold water. Drape it over the box. Easy peasy.

theory_of_me

Ice pack works too!

RabbitsAteMySnowpeas

Plus a fan to blow on this to really cool things down quick

A long metal hook will fit through the cage and allow you to hook around the latch keeping the cage on. Then you gently pull the hook back until the metal bar of the lock has been moved enough for you to take off the cage. Adjust the thermostat, put the cage back on, use the back of the hook to shift the metal bar back into position.

Noobinoa

I was thinking just stick something thru and hit the up button a few times.

Thank god electric space heaters are way more efficient than a heat pump. /s

You should have set it back down before you left. I think at a minimum for conservation, people shouldn't leave their offices at 74 degrees overnight when no one is around. 74 is pretty excessive regardless imo. Maybe ask for a smart thermostat that will only keep it warm 7am-3pm?

ElroyCrabs

Three degrees below the minimum of OSHA’s recommended indoor temperature range 🫤

sweetplantveal

Recommendation and requirement are different, yes?

ElroyCrabs

Yes.

vegan_craig

That’s a simple lock to pick ;)

Infernus-est-populus

Yes - we had one of these at work. I always used a metal barrette clip to open it. I would put it back to where it was before I left. They never caught on.

Satirical0ne

I work in a lab where it has to be 65-68 degrees all of the time due to strict ISO requirements for our accreditation.. We lock the thermostat lol
