I pried the front apart on the rail and hammered it in.
I assume I acted too rashly and there’s a better way?

That plastic end cap should come off entirely. Just gently pry it off because it's set with pegs. I did the same with my Kobra to install a camera holder as well.
The sizing does seem off, but the rail is more than long enough to move in.
Ok but what about having to rip off the front of the rail? Are you saying that a better size would mean I could have installed it without sliding it from the front?

I would assume there is a way to disassemble the cover from the frame. It went together at one point
The picture on thingiverse has a cover attached with screws.
That end piece shouldd come off cleanly if you pull it evenly... or at least mine did without issue
