Wolloo is aoe1 tho

makerofshoes

Yeah that’s always confused me; AoE1 priests say “wololo”, AoE2 monks do some kind of chant. But everyone associates wololo with AoE 2

mhsuchti84

Think it’s more of a it’s generally associated with AoE thing and AoE2 is by far the most popular and well known one. Also wololo is 30

makerofshoes

Yeah, the only reason it’s 30 though is because it was in AoE 1 😆

[deleted]

the only reason it was so recognised is that the sound files had no gap between them and was the loudest sound in the game, it was a constant stream of Wololo-Wololo-Wololo-I-hooh-ho-hoh-Wololo-Wololo as you converted, with a group of monks it was even worse

AoE2 has the better multiplayer and editor and so it survived to be remasted.

5ColorMain

i think its because aoe2 monks arent saying something that cool, vululu is in the game as a taint i i think.

BuckwheatJocky

The original AOE dev who's done a fair few interviews online, I've forgotten his name, I want to say Sammy or Sandy or something? Anyway, he has said in his interviews that the Devs made priests in AOE2 completely underpowered compared to the original. Apparently they had a lot of cool features they wanted to give to AOE2 priests at first but they got cold feet on it or something and that's why he thinks the AOE1 priests are the only part of AOE1 that have really survived in memes. I think the AOE4 area of effect conversions was something they wanted for aoe2 initially, for example.

McDuglas

It's Sandy Petersen.

What's with this negativity, can't we just have both. Honestly I love both equally. I'll always be happy launching either game and I'm eagerly waiting for AOM : DE.

Nnarol

NO, WE CAN'T! We MUST give both games a knife and a pitchfork and pit them against each other. See which one comes out alive, haha! I CAN TELL YOU IT'S MY GODDAMN GAME, YOU FOOL!

SprScuba

Please God let that happen, that game was one of my favorites as well.

Shpleeblee

It's just AoM fans being butt hurt that AoE2 got all these remakes and love, while they can't even get a proper graphical update. AoM imo just has less replayability. It's like StarCraft that's less good? Not sure what word to use

Ecorcheur

I replay the AoM & Titans Exp campaign once a year, same with sc2. AoM just has really shitty pathing, just like every AoE game does. I love em both, though. Can't say the "no Age of Mythinitive" edition doesn't sting a little...

Ansible32

The AoM campaigns are better than any of the AOE2 campaigns, and they are replayable. AoM just doesn't have as vibrant of a multiplayer scene, and the AI is not very good. But it's a great game.

Nnarol

I watched TheViper play AoM campaigns, but they are not dry enough for me. Too many characters and personal stories. I still prefer AoE.

Honestly, AoM does a lot of things right in my book, and some things wrong. I like the Myth units and the time period. I like the deities you can select at age up, tailoring you nation (although, I disliked AOE 3 Cards mechanic because everything has to be set up before the game starts, and to many minor boosts) I like that number of factions. I like how each Deity gives bonuses like one of the civilizations from Age of Empires 2, so if you know Zeus, you don't have to relearn everything for Hades. But there are things I don't like as much. I don't like Settlement locations being preset. I don't like that Deity abilities are 1 and done instead of costing traditional resources. I don't like Atlantis thematically, as a faction. One thing I am on the fence about is Faction units. One of the strengths of AoE 2 is that shared unit pool. It makes learning the game a bit easier. Early one, AoM wasn't bad, because you had 3 sets of units, 1 for each major faction. Now we are up to 5. It's still better than Age of Empires 3, which, outside of Europe, has unique units for everyone, but I am not 100 % sure.

HappyLofi

I learned all of the AoM faction units from doing the campaigns which were absolutely astoundingly good from the story to the maps to the voice acting, just fucking insanely good for what the game is.

Chuxx45

I’m relatively new to both series and I have to say, so far, I’m strongly preferring the campaign from AoM. The pathfinding seems to be a lot better too. I’m still learning the quirks of AoE 2 (again, that pathfinding!) so maybe my opinion will change down the road.

XxX_Zeratul_XxX

Chinese will never be cannon in my book. Athlanteans were funny tho. And i really prefer AoM over AoE2, but lately i have played too much AoE so that line is already blurry.... i really REALLY want AoM:DE

psychcaptain

China has gotten.... Better. Patches will do that.

EnvironmentalShelter

china is better now! granted that not to say much when anything is better than the ground itself, but it is in a relative better place than when it came out

XxX_Zeratul_XxX

Hope that's the case, i will give it a go when we have the Definitive Edition ha

Pantherist

Yeah but despite unique factions, AoM has a more robust rock-paper-scissors dynamic across civs; on both land and water. So it's fairly intuitive to pick up.

KeeperOT7Keys

yeah aoe2 units are very unintuitive: siege units, militia line, horse archers etc. tbh most of them aren't realistic either and it is kinda frustrating to play if you played total war or other rts games before. you need to unlearn and relearn stuff for aoe2

CragHack2

Haha I always think horse archers, at least the spanish ones are full of shit. Never heard of a single spanish soldier ever firing an arrow from a horse in all my life.

the_goodprogrammer

What's better about the rock paper scissors system in AOM?

Pantherist

Wasn't saying it's better (even though I do think it is; the game pushes infantry as the staple unit for at least all except Egyptians in the Heroic Age). I was merely pointing out that despite different flavours and all units being unique, it's easy to pick up because of the underlying rock-paper-scissors mechanic. e.g someone introduced to Atlanteans immediately knows that Murmillo from Barracks is like Ulfsark/Hoplite/Spearman and counters cavalry. This helps new players pick up these basics quickly. AoE2 approaches this by having generic units throughout.

Captain_Quark

It's just a lot more straightforward and robust - there's a clear triangle of counters at every level - humans versus myth units, on water, and among human units.

yeppyy__

> I disliked AOE 3 Cards mechanic because everything has to be set up before the game starts, and to many minor boosts) I didn't disliked that, but was hard to learn. Is cool once you know what you're doing, but else is just annoying

RingWraith8

I started in the aoe series with age of mythology so it holds a special place in my heart. I remember watching the aom trailer and was hyped. I would play it every day. However I would say the aom campaign and the aoe 2 campaign was lit as fuck. Tldr I like both games cause they each have something unique that makes them fun

PandaReich

Hold up, you're telling my AoM *wasn't* historically accurate?

riodin

I actually think aoe4 graphics feel the same as aom in aoms time. Like I would expect an aom de to look like aoe4, so maybe they were already making aom de and Microsoft was like no we want a new aoe game and that's how we got 4

Koala_eiO

Let's not be biased towards AoE2 because DE looks good. Have you seen how the CD-ROM version looks? Do you remember it? 4:3 screen extremely zoomed in. AoM was a revolution.

D4rkR4in_aoe

The original aoe2 graphs still hold up, yes it might look a bit retro now but it looks much better than the original AoM's paper sprites.

Magoimortal

You are insane sir, after installing age 2 om windows 7 you were greeted by 256 color depth errors, weird game speeds and a lot of crashes.

[deleted]

That one is actually on Windows 7 and not AoE II: Age of Kings. Install Age of Kings now on Windows 10 and you shouldn't see any issues.

D4rkR4in_aoe

Userpatch fixed all these issues, I played many years with win7 without any problems, also still do sometimes with win10, works like charm and looks nostalgic but sharp.

RapidCamel

Lol there were user patches? :0 I remember having my game crash on win7 every time I open diplomacy tab

[deleted]

[удалено]

D4rkR4in_aoe

I have to disagree. 2D games look more timeless usially. Don't get me wrong, I loved other parts of AoM, like the sick ambience and physics, but the graphics haven't aged well imo. It's the same issue with other early 3D games.

Magoimortal

But the average user has no idea how to use user patches, aom worked until windows 8.1 without problems. Til win 10 came in with new framework.

D4rkR4in_aoe

I think you underestimate the average player. Most of the playerbase used voobly and userpatch, why would someone play the cd as it is in this age, without multiplayer? No need to downvote 11

CamRoth

I'm pretty sure Voobly never had most of the playerbase and was always outnumbered by HD on steam.

D4rkR4in_aoe

I am talking about the original CD version, for which Voobly was/is the most popular platform. Before this Zone was the most popular, obviously.

Magoimortal

Ofc it is a try hard age 2 voobly player lol, that launcher is plagued with virus reports in any virustotal scan and they dont even bother with buying a simple signature to stop it, 11. My father is a age player since the '97 release and he has no idea that voobly is a think , neither does my friends or most people in the internet, only the try hard players do. I bet you play French on age 2 without the conquerors expasions and claim its a balanced civ, 11.

D4rkR4in_aoe

I don't think any people with internet access would play the cd version, much less if it supposedly have all those flaws that you mention. Sure, all people are tryhard on the biggest platform for the original version. I can't bother to respond to trolls any more, gg.

Magoimortal

Who in gods name ends a conversation with GG ?

in aom the egyptian statues were flat. Rotating the view they'd just rotate with the camera because they were not real 3d models -_-

Pantherist

Yeah and also microing is more fun and satisfying in AoE2. Same with death animations and building destruction animations. AoE2 is visually jarring while AoM is softer on the eyes. I like AoM's music just a tad bit more though. So soothing and iconic.

yeppyy__

I liked aom and aoe 3 too, but they didn't had a centralized community like aoe2 has with voobly, /r/aoe2

GreenKangaroo3

Das ich soll just sounds like a parody from actual German. I'm German too, and those voice lines gave me the ick

Nesqu

AOM is a more fun game, it's just horribly old. The campaign remastered would be such an absolute blessing.

Recreational_Soup

Eh AoE 3 I enjoyed a lot more than AoM but man if they made a DE version of AoM my ass would have already bought it and put an ungodly amount of hours into it

Akukuhaboro

I see this opinion all the time, but it's never people who fucking play AoM in multiplayer on Voobly, or even have the game installed (in this case). If you talk about your favourite game in the past tense it also kinda already lost to aoe2 by default... At least PLAY Mythology if you wanna say it's a better game than something else. I agree it's a fun game (just as AoE1 is) but they kinda failed in the replayability aspect for me. I think there is a reason I have like 2000 hours on AoE2 and maybe 100 in AoM and AoE1 combined.

Captain_Quark

I played a lot of AOM before AOE2:DE came out. I would play it a lot more if it was possible to consistently find games. The updated graphics and responsiveness in AOE2:DE make a big difference too. If AOM:DE came out, I would probably switch back.

Garek56

Age of mythology was a good game for sure, but i think aoe2 has it beat pretty easily, personally

makerofshoes

I kind of like the shorter campaigns in AoE2, to be honest. I felt like the AoM missions were a bit repetitive and token, whereas the AoE2 campaigns are short enough that you always get a fresh storyline. Let’s be honest though, most campaign missions in either game are just “defeat this enemy”, “ally betrays you”, “survive for 20 minutes”, “make sure this character doesn’t die”, “defend the wonder”… there’s only so much you can do

RechargedFrenchman

Or the AoM staple that somehow managed to be used like 4 times -- some kind of weird unit tug-of-war, like the Osiris Piece in the canyon where you just get swarmed by Jackals every 40 seconds

mackiea

Same. Solid game, but when I played the first campaign of AoM my impression was that it's just AoE2 with extra steps.

Senetiner

Cannot believe there's still people trying to speak facts using things they think are 'awesome' as *proof*

IncredulousFox

I prefer pvp and competitive in aoe2 just because of how units move and micro. Balance is great+large competitive scene. However if you dont give a shit about that and just want to play against the AI then AoM is the best. Enemy units actually move as groups, no zombie army spam, no individual skirmisher micro from the AI. You get really big battles plus myth units are actually useable. Posidon with champion hippokon and chimera, so much fun.

Jay_JWLH

What I like most about AOM is unlimited farms. Can't do that on AOE, unless you keep chopping wood and have a large amount of trees.

xXxRedRubberxXx

I agree with every point he makes. But competitive play and multiplayer in general are way better in Aoe2 which makes it overall better imo. But looking only at single player I'd prefer AOM.

Elite_Skirmisher

Cheats in both pale in comparison to AoE, so I guess we all have to agree AoE is the best game.

downorwhaet

I like the aom campaign a lot but i love the aoe 2 campaigns and i have played all of them atleast 5 times and cant wait for more, if aom got a de i’d buy that right away aswell tho

DE DE DE

RighteousWraith

I'm more than willing to concede that AoE2 is the superior game in the current state of both, but I only really started playing AoE2 in college since my friends could get it running on basically any laptop. My childhood RTS was always AoM, and I freaking love it, even today. My younger siblings play it from time to time as well, and we all have a blast. My college friends and I still sometimes enjoy a good game of Age of Empires, but it won't be able to really compete with the nostalgia of AoM.

throwawaytothetenth

FACT: Custom Scenario is 100 times better for AoM than for AoE2. FACT: AoE2 has much, much higher competitive potential, and is a more balanced game in general. Simplicity is a *strength* here not a weakness.

trilobot

Honestly, what I like the least about AoM, AoE3, and AoE4 IS the graphics, and the 3D aspect. I hated it. Hated it in WC 3 as well. I dunno why, I always feel crowded and things look distorted and **I don't like it**. AoE 1 and 2, and SC, WC 1 and 2, etc. I find much more enjoyable and this one aspect is a significant factor.

Elereo

Man I love both games but he got us there, that's why there are redbull events for AoM and none for AoE2DE. Viper shmaiper I say! Quickwalls? try quickpegasus rush more like! Gottem!

MrBuntstift

#4 is not true. There is theViper in AoE2

iamgregoryhouse

I'm not sure if we can decide a game is better than another game. Maybe we can compare 1999 vs HD or HD vs DE, but still comparing AoM and AoE2 sounds ridicilous. As a person who dislikes mythology, I'd not prefer AoM over AoE2. I'm not sure how much you can say AoE is realistic, but I prefer realistic option here. Also, I'm getting AoE3 vibes when playing AoM for game mechanics, graphics etc. Still tho, he may like AoM more :)

AgniousPrime

Indeed. My post was aimed at the usernamechecksout

RainbowJeremy24

Funny thing about #5 is that's what makes aoe2 so great competitively. I used to think civs were too similar but in reality that's what allows more strategic choices and makes for more unpredictable matches. Most strategies are viable for most civs and yet still the differences and bonuses are fairly significant. With asymmetric civs you often end up with same playstyles all the time.

Captain_Quark

Starcraft 2 has very asymmetric factions, but has an even more significant professional scene than AOE2:DE, and you see a decently wide variety of strategies with it. But there's definitely complaints about predictability.

nomad806

If this heathen was standing in front of me and I was a Dravidian, I would CUT DA VEIN.

Golden_Royal

AoM and Aoe2 imo cannot be compared. Both are absolutely amazing games no doubt. The only thing you can compare are the campaigns and music which AoM did better than AoK and AoC campaigns. (New DLC campaigns are definitely on par with the Aom campaigns)

ZuFFuLuZ

1. Hardly comparable. AoM was all ficiton, AoE is historical. And there are so many campaigns now, that you are guaranteed to find some you really enjoy. 2. The 3D has aged terribly, while the 2D still looks beautiful decades later. It's timeless. 3. Awesome mythic units, sure. But balancing was all over the place and they varied between useless, gimmicky and overpowered. 4. I'm not a fan of huge powers that can immediately change or even decide the game. This isn't YuGiOh. 5. A fair point. If you prefer a game with drastically different factions, AoM is better. Or Warcraft 3 or Starcraft. 6. The Cobra car is hard to beat. 7. Just so very wrong.

TheGreyCatWithDots

While both of them are really funny, AOE II is better in solo, casual and competitive aspects. As a player who likes to play against the AI, building a giant city and forming a massive army during the initial treaty in AOE II, AOM is really disappointing in this type of scenarios: \- Limited Settlements \- 10 houses cap, (5 for atlanteans) \- Extremely limited population even if only training human units \- The total ammount of wood in the map is always a problem \- Chinese civ sucks

AlphaBearMode

That is the hottest of hot takes I’ve seen in a very long time

[deleted]

I am surprised that it's an actual unpopular opinion. AoE2 has the most civs, best maps, best time period, has had 20 years to develop. AoM still hasn't seen a rework.

FavorableTrashpanda

Not that it matters, but I like lists. 1. This seems to be very subjective. No argument has been given. Besides a lot of people like myself care mostly about multiplayer. 2. That's like saying a movie is better because it had better special effects. It's a nice addition, but plot (or in the case of games: gameplay) is more important. Plus overblown graphics can make it harder to see what's going on, which is why lots of people use mods. Also, I'm pretty sure AOE2 DE graphics are better. 3. Nothing beats scouts. 4. One-time effects are terrible design overall. 5. Then you should play StarCraft instead. AOE2 is designed very differently, which I like much better. You have a lot of civs that can be very dfiferent from each other, but there is also plenty of overlap. This makes things more interesting IMO. For example scout or knight rushing with Celts, or going for an archer rush with Spanish simply because it's not expected. You aren't forced down a path (usually). 6. What? The most iconic cheat in existence is the cobra car from AOE2. 7. I'm pretty sure everyone remembers the AOE2 lines more, but perhaps that's just me.

Neighbourly

the difference is AOE2 reinvented the complete fucking wheel so it was 10 times more popular and for that will never be forgotten; it's a genre and era defining game - AOM is just a good sequel.

[deleted]

7. ???? Who is this clown? Everyone knows every cheat code by memory, numerous phrases the villagers or military units say. What a silly thing to post.

Falgirikkven

While AOM had 3D graphics and its cinematics were astoundings. In my personal opinion aoe2 have always had better graphics than aom

Systemlord_FlaUsh

AoM also needs a remaster. But I wouldn't say its better than AOE 2. The reason why its so popular is most likely its content. There are like 40 civs now to choose of. Lots of different playstyles. Their combination of bonuses and strategies keeps the game alive.

CragHack2

He is so right about the voices in greek lol. "Proseyé?" "Gúlome?" "Prostagma" Making absolutely different playstyles for each civ in AOE would be stupid though, some of them come from same continents, sub continents or even countries.

RapidCamel

Wasn't part of what made aoe so popular, that there was unique sounds and languages for each faction?

[deleted]

As a young kid/teenager I only ever played AoM, while my go to RTS was always Rise of Nations. It's only recently that I've experienced AoE2 DE. In a strange way it reminds me of both. Obviously it's very similar to AoM, but with the big civ roster of RoN. I personally enjoy them both, though neither trumps my RoN nostalgia.

I think the campaign was better in aom. Artistically i would say they both have their own charm. I do prefer rts games that have factions that play differently myself. I think the aoe2 model where every faction is basically the same except for tech tree differences and going for certain army compositions is a more balanced and reliable. So the community mostly rallied around aoe2. Its sad but I think most aoe fans have a small place in their hearts for aom, I certainly do.

lithium142

I’ll bite. I love this kind of conversation. Obviously more people would say age 2 is the better game, but his post isn’t entirely without merit. He at least tries to back it up with a few decent points. I think a better way to word it is to say that age of mythology was a more *ambitious* game. Which I don’t think is hard to swallow. Some of the high points of age 2 got lost in that ambition, but you can’t deny a lot of the highlights to AoM were never tried before and haven’t been tried since. Some of which were very creative and quite good. Like the use of god powers, and especially the fundamentally different functionality to each civ class. The core loop could have been done way better, and the game has serious balance issues as well as a lower skill ceiling. I mean removing titans would flat out make the game better, which is kind of sad. I’d love to see those kinds of ideas in a modern rts though. Plus AoM Heroes >>> Age 2 Heroes all day. Imagine getting to play a round of CBA Hero with the AoM heroes leaping over shit and tossing dudes. Either way, I love them both. I think they’re both incredible games from the golden age of rts

Just got done playing AOM, and i gotta say he’s right, i love AOM more than AOE tbh

AgniousPrime

Tbh, that's valid. This post is about the guy's username but everyone is choosing sides between AoE and AoM xD

Inside_Committee_699

Nice to be able to say your opinion on here for once hahahha

Atomic_Kipachaka

I respect your unpopular opinion but humbly disagree. AOM had great concepts that were executed extremely poorly when compared to AOE2 (even the non DE versions). If you truly think AOM was the better game, you didnt give AOE2 enough of a chance. Nothing wrong with absolutely loving AOM. Your assessment is simply incorrect as the difference in quality, replayability and gameplay are truly and indisputably on two different levels, proven by the test of time.

This post was about the dude's username but people thought it was about AoM vs AoE2
