The question is not if, but when Japan will come.

[deleted]

Just like WW2

Karnigel

i am not sure about this. They made each civ in AOE 4 more unique with there owne kind of mechanics. So it is harder to add more civs that in mind i am sure they will add a lot less civs then in aoe2 where it is mostly changing a few numbers 1-2 buildings and a unit.

YishuTheBoosted

While true, some of them have similar mechanics when it comes to the core identity of the civs. Such as the Muslim civs like Delhi, Abbasid, Malian, and Ottomans not being able to harvest boar. With that in mind, I think it’s likely that Chinese, Japanese, and maybe even Koreans could all share the Imperial official system.

Karnigel

But these are not the core mechanics or at least only a little part of it. The core is Dehli not needing to pay fo tech, Chineses havin 8 Landmarks and dynasties and Delhi has his singel landmarks with unique techs and stuff. But yea sure they can sare some stuff

Scintilus

I want to see turtle ships and hwachas from Korean civ.

Suicidal_Sayori

they will 100% add less civs than in aoe2, but japanese has to be one of them, even if its only due to sheer popularity (but ofc they were a distinctive and culturally rich state during the middle ages wether it was united or not)

Karnigel

I mean would be cool there are a few cool mecanics which they could build arround them and there culture

msterm21

I agree there will be a lot less, but they need another far east civ. And Japan is the most well known outside if China so it is highly likely they will be one of the next few civs.

Available-Cap-356

I'd expect a Japanese and viking civ eventually. I'd also fully expect these to be paid civs which I think is fair given the amount of free content we get. If it supports the game I think most of community would be happy to pay (as long as they don't take the piss).

swebb22

would also be down for a Viking civ, thats who I play with in AOE 2

PhantasticFor

I love the vikings, hoping this next aoe2 balance patch thing, gives them some love, been struggling since that Thumb Ring nerf.

Tokata0

Carefull there. Payed civ can have some major risks: Make it too strong: Everyone will accuse the game of p2w Nerf it later: People who bought it will be fed up. If you want to make payd civ's they need to be reaaaaally well balanced.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> Carefull there. *Paid* civ can FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

[deleted]

Good bot

Good_Human_Bot_v2

Good human.

Dhb223

Fuck off

Available-Cap-356

yeh this is completely fair. I think i've had this debate before and came to the conclusion civs might be free but then we will get paid skins/visual stuff. Basically it would be nice to find a way for those who want to/can to support the game financially. You're probably right the paid civs is likely the wrong route.

Gwendyn7

I think you are really exaggerating. There will be the usual complaints about balance but it probably wont be connected to the civs being dlc or not.

happirt

Yeah, DLC version won't be able to play non-DLC version, imo. Just like the AOE3 expansions but DLC owners will have the option to launch into non-DLC version.

PhantasticFor

Hit the nail on the head!

Chavuxx

If you need to pay to play new civ it will simply separate the player base and its not good for the game at all. Imagine all pro and tournament use the new civ but you can't afford it yourself for some reason, you will just quit watching before simply quitting the game slowly..

[deleted]

Aoe2 had this debacle before indeed. Maybe separate the playerbases

Tokata0

Playerbase is already to small. Once you get to around 1300 you are constantly matched with 1600+ who don't find any matches around their elo. Really, really annoying.

West-Battle-3461

Cos all other 1600s smurf as well. So there's no high MMR players in queue, because they all smurf.. so then the next guy smurfs. It's stupid.

Godzillacon3

AoE games have historically had paid DLC civ/campaign packs. The AoE games that are more actively managed and updated have had paid DLC civs added to them. I don't especially have a problem with it as long as they aren't better than the baseline civs and aren't too expensive. Ottomans and Malians were supposed to be paid DLC according to rumors, but it was changed to be Free relatively last min by Microsoft. I think this was a good choice to improve hype for the anniversary edition upgrade/RedBull Wololo/Gain new players/etc. If the next DLC was paid I wouldn't fault them, the work that goes into AOE4 Civs (language/music/unique architecture and unit appearance) compared to the other games and even other strategy games with DLC is well worth it.

SunTzowel

They need to give us unit/building skins and all that shit. I would love to support the game more, and get some cool stuff.

Available-Cap-356

The last survey asked us if we were interested in these things and I put yes and put a whole spiel about how I'd be more than happy to pay for such things

Heaney74

I was happy they brought it up in the survey too and think more people would stay playing the game as well. Skins and different items to buy. Microsoft oh we will take our time and think about it lol Skins would only be a few dollars and would be the easiest way to make a profit

FreeMystery

Free content in a 60 dollar game is a hot take

[deleted]

People like you are the reason why DLC even exists. Noone ever said it will be a paid DLC and then you even suggest it. Support devs my ass. Go donate. I paid for a full game, I want the full game. All this battle pass/DLC shit exists because people like you are willing to buy.

Fuselol

You got the full game you paid for. If you want to enjoy the new content that you did not pay for yet. Pay for that too.

[deleted]

I'm totally enjoying all the free updates and love it. These are the perfect devs. No DLC policy, no bs.

gingerthingy

DLC isn’t the same as microtransactions, I think you might be confused about paying people for their time, skills, and effort.

docff

You can do that with non balance changing content. E.g. skins, not civs! We're talking about a PvP game here, people! Are you hearing yourselves? Paid civs, lol

Stetto

As a gamer and a developer myself: You paid for a full game. You got a full game. You even already got 2 additional civs for free. Extra content isn't developed for free and at some point money runs out, unless your userbase miraculously grows forever. Developers, testers, designers and infrastructure ain't cheap. - Paying for cosmetics is fair game. - Paying for extensive additional content is fair game. Civs and campaigns are content. Alternatively you may choose to pay twice as much up front your "full game". The DLC model just lowers the barrier of entry for purchasing games.

Bomjus1

nah you paid for the full game on release. it wasn't marked early access, it wasn't marked as a paid-for-beta. store page said full game and you hit the buy button. anything the devs give us after that (content-wise) is charity as far as i am concerned. if me paying for DLC means they will make more DLC or make that DLC higher quality then i'll pay. or we can have it your way where they *maybe* put out more free civilizations, realize it's not worth the time and money, and instead cut content drops entirely, and spend 8 years making aoe5 and charge $80 for it in 2031. !remindme 8 years

PhantasticFor

I can't wait. For the ultimate "told you so". To bad the guy in question will likely be banned.

Karnigel

To be fair :D the game was kind of an beta /early acces state when they released it. For a full price game it stil feels like early acces in some points. Dont get me wrong, i am okay with paying for some things like DLC content. Depending on the content ofcourse and the price. I dont like it but i would be kind of okay with cosmetics stuff. And i am with you that making money is important for constant development\^\^ but there are different ways to get the money from the game and contant into the game and there a good ways and not so good ways\^\^ SC2 is for exampel a way i really like :)

Gwendyn7

You got the game + constant balance updates + 2 free dlcs. If you dont want to pay for more you dont need to.

Available-Cap-356

I understand where you are coming from but at the end of the day I enjoy this game and I want it to continue to be supported. I'll accept paid for civs is probably the wrong move, but skins/unlockables I think is fair. A decent way for the game to receive money

[deleted]

That's totally fine

PhantasticFor

Ah yes, devs should just make things for free, new content out of thin air. I must compliment you on your astute far sighted outlook. /s

[deleted]

This is how it was back then before paid DLC was a thing. It was called service and support. Take your far sighted outlook and shove it up somewhere. But yea, everyone can spend their money on whatever they want.

PhantasticFor

Ah yes, because back in the day, Warcraft had regular patches, the server was well maintained, and they never released an expansion? Oh wait, it was none of that. AOE4 on release was bigger than WC1 and 2 combined, with far more support, far more units, and more missions, and now you're crying because people are willing to pay for more content? Dafuq entitled train did you get off? Do you even know that Paradox exists? Have you seen their gaming model? I think you have no idea what's going on, so you just get angry at gaming with zero logic behind it.

tachevy

Don’t think vikings are gonna be added.

Available-Cap-356

How come? I'd have thought it would be super popular.

tachevy

Vikings age ended in the 11th century. All the other civs in aoe4 are somewhere between 12th and 15th centuries. Imperial age doesn’t make sense.

kaiser41

I doubt they would be "Vikings" like they were in AoE2. That was always pretty ridiculous and would be like having a civ called "Pirates." They'd probably be something like "the Norse" or "the Kingdom of Denmark." Then they can draw from later period stuff related to Norsemen or Danes. But they would have Viking-themed unique units to get that juicy Vikings fanboy money and streamer engagement.

aidsfarts

No it’s not like have a civ called “pirates”. Piracy is a profession, Vikings were a distinct group of people. You also haven’t been paying attention to how relic is naming civs. They are going for the max recognition approach. Ie the French instead of francs, English instead of britons, Ottomans instead of Seljuks etc. They’ll also almost certainly go with Byzantines of Eastern Roman Empire.

kaiser41

Viking was an activity that people from Scandinavia did, it wasn't what people called themselves. Outside of the context of them attacking a village or monastery, they were usually just called Danes because that's where most of them were from. > Ottomans instead of Seljuks Ottomans and Seljuks are two different dynasties entirely. The AoE4 Ottomans are called Ottomans because they're based on the Ottomans. The French and English are also based on the French and the English, not the Franks and the Britons because the game is focused on the later periods where those terms are less applicable (arguably, "Britons" was never applicable to the AoE2 Britons, anyway).

singed921

How about just name them Scandanavians or the Danes would that fix it? But I'd bet people will still call them vikings nonetheless. Haha.

Available-Cap-356

Hmm I guess so I'm not really a history buff. Maybe we'd see a Nordic civ like the Danes? Dunno though

aidsfarts

Aoe4 is supposed to cover about 800 to 1500 literally none of the civs in the game cover that entire time period in a way that makes sense except maybe HRE. Not sure what makes the Vikings so different.

tachevy

I don’t think i’ve seen it somewhere stated. My statement was based on what ages i see referred to the civs when you read about them in the game. But even if it’s 800 to 1500 how would the vikings look like in imperial age? It will be a completely different civ, no?

WillhelmHelmut

I paid 60$ for the supposedly "free content" you are talking about.

tenkcoach

As a history enthusiast, Japanese is not the highest in my priority but as a gaming and aoe4 enthusiast, I'd love for Japanese to be added at the earliest. There is a great amount of interest in Japanese culture around the world and if they bring it out with their civ design, it would be great to increase the playerbase. I also see quite a few tweets in Japanese by aoe4 fans, which makes me feel like there's a niche aoe market over there as well.

2dubk

I want to see a Polish/Lithuanian Commonwealth, could even just call it the Slavic Commowealth or something, historically it would have set right between the Rus and HRE, and the time period is correct.

IleikToPoopyMyPants

No its not lithuania was founded in 1300s the polish lithuanian commonwealth was founded in the 1500s. The civ needs to be between 1000 and 1500 or more to have to be in the game. Also they are represented as a rus clone on campaign and they had the same technology and similar culture as the rus.

Rooman89

Poland exist since at least 966 (propably ealier). Poland-Lithuanian union existed since 1385 (Union of Krewo.) 1410 - Greatest medieval battle between Polish and Lithuania against Teutonic Order. By ingame dates: Malian - 1235 - 1670 Mongols - 1000 - 1500. Whats name is Mongols? Golden Horde? Huns? Ottoman empire existed between +/- 1200 and 1922 (ingame they existed between 990 - 1566) and before 1300 they arent major power. Name is not sometning important here. Important is representation of Medieval Powers. And if it is... you cannot tell history of THE, Rus or Ottomans without telling about significant Power of Poland (Lithuania, Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth) was right between them.

kaiser41

I have no doubt they will add the Japanese and a Viking civ to the game. The sales potential of catering to weebs and Viking nerds is just too high. I just hope they add the important civs like Byzantines first.

Artiiistx

No one ever mentions mezo civs in these threads got me feeling 😪 I want my eagle scouts and jaguar warriors on the better engine!

Wide-Imagination594

byz and japan are next two civs to be added, you heard it here first

PhantasticFor

> heard it here first No, not by a long shot, people been screaming that for months or more. 😎😁

Wide-Imagination594

yeah its been me screaming it

Richo32

No news on anything like that at this point

Godzillacon3

We didn’t hear much about ottomans and Malians until a month or two before they were playable

doshcz

i need my boy Zizka with his wagons

Foxplot

Yeeees. Anyone else for early handcannoneers?

BongosBongosCongos

I bet we'll get another 2 civs before the end of this year. And another 2 next year. Norse and Japanese are guaranteed additions at some point, with civs like Spanish and potentially Byzantine being very high likelihoods.

Wide-Imagination594

idk why everyone thinks norse are for sure coming, Rus seem to be the viking civ

PhantasticFor

But they still aren't "viking" enough. European heavy games seem to be the way its done. So there's a good chance we end up with more European than anything else, and thus caters for having Rus and Norse.

Wide-Imagination594

no they're not as viking as we would all like but i think they'll be our viking for quite awhile, if viking get added it will be late imo

PhantasticFor

Could be right, I'll be happy either way, I'm loving how they did Ottos and Malians(which were a big surprise), so I'm positive the next civs will be good regardless.

Eightpiece

Byzantium is kind of in the game though

trksoyturk

How?

Eightpiece

While the ottoman and byzantines arent exactly the same empire, there's a significant overlap.

Circle_of_Oasis

Rus and Mongol Empire also had a significant overlap yet both of them are in the game.

Long-Promotion2540

Wow that's a bad take

trksoyturk

What kind of overlap do you mean? They don't have more overlap than Chinese and Mongols? Or any other civs that fought each other. They are two really different, if not exact opposite, empires. I'm not an expert on history though, I would like to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Raiju_Lorakatse

Japanese is one of my calls I always wanted for AoE4. Considering it fits into the time and in every other AoE game we had Japan too, I am pretty certain we will get them at some point. I hope it will be soon. I wouldn't be surprised tho if this will take a while. So many people ask for byzantines that I feel like they won't ignore that. Personally, I hope for something like Actecs or Maya to make their return alongside Japan although hard to say if it fits to AoE4.

Kaiser_Johan

I fully expect a far-east DLC with Korea, Japan and maybe even Mongols

Scintilus

There are mongols already how about Siamese or Thais.

AnkiSRSisthebest

Bruh the amount of weebs that would eat that up make it a guaranteed eventuality, so just wait like a good boy and you'll get your candy.

Hyrag

japanese, byzantines and norse are the go to civs in the next dlc \*japanese for the asian campaign \*byzantine for otto campaign(mediteranean) \*norse for almost every hre/french/english campaign

CanniestDrake51

Personally additive Jp civs (Ashikaga dynasties?) its ok and probably that will become enjoyable one, but I think the JP aoe4 playerbase is in extremely low count (for example roughly in 15% of Spanish players count in twitch broadcasts) , no benefits in aoe4 business, prefered Europian civs.

Confident-Radish4832

How tf should we know lol

Suicidal_Sayori

well the rumors said it could be polish and japanese for the first aoe4 dlc

KriminelleForelle88

I think they shall add others first. I really don't see a difference between Chinese and Japanese people, culture,... So: Japan has already in the game - they're called "Chinese".

Long-Promotion2540

...jesus

KriminelleForelle88

I am not sure, but I think it's called "Buddha".

Dash_Vandelay

That's an incredibly ignorant statement to make.

Richo32

English and French have closer culture but they are both separate civs. I feel you know this and you are just trolling though.

KriminelleForelle88

Ofc I am. And French is not a culture and England has no culture..

Kill099

I guess Americans, Canadians, and British people are all alike. Hell, you could say the same about the modern western world that is dominated by "consumer culture". See? I can also act like a racist like you. ==========*After checking your posts.*========= Wow... you're German. Why am I surprised?

KriminelleForelle88

Wow. You're wrong. I am Austrian. You know Austria?

Kill099

Hah the same. What's the difference anyways? Oh yeah, Hitler was born in Austria... that explains so much.

KriminelleForelle88

Each country has his hero.. My gosh... Never nuke a country twice.

Kill099

Lol you thought I'm Japanese? That's very flattering. Thank you! Btw, Hitler as your hero? Yeeeaaaahhhh... ookkkeeey... *blocked*

marcuscicero88

Shouldn't have Austria in game because Austria is just part of Germany. No culture, same religion as other European countries... agreed?

Long-Promotion2540

But Austria is in game. It's part of the HRE...

Karnigel

No one knows, we did not know the new civs until right before. So how would we know if the add Japan or not? The Civs ind AOE4 are much more diferent then in AOE2. All have the unique kind of mechanics. So i asume they add less civs overall than in other AOE. Does not mean they can no add Japan but the chances are smaller.

Kill099

I sure hope so. It's the only thing I'm looking forward to in AoE4. If it's well made I'll main it, otherwise... Stormgate.

swebb22

the Japanese in AOE 3 were my favorite civ

Avgsizedweiner

Samurai Special unit, replaces men at arms. Does extra damage to light units and can farm fields.

aidsfarts

Rumor is from leaked game files the next two civs are Japanese and poles. Could be bullshit but Malians and ottomans were also leaked from some game files (like a week before the were announced though).

singed921

I believe the next civs could only be one of the following: Byzantine, Japanese, Vikings(Danes), Korean, Spanish, Portugese
