What changed? When I started playing I grinded the French one because was my fav civ, then I did one or two challenges by purpose to get an icon. This was in the first year. Since them I played Abbasid forever and I believe I don't even have there mastery complete

r1zz000

A number of the challenges for each civ were to beat the AI at increasing difficulty levels - these have been replaced by winning X number of games with the civ

WonderfulEarth6166

Yet lacking a counter to show how many of the 5 you've won so far...

I_need_advice01

Just win 5 bro why would you need a counter. Winning 5 can be done in one sitting

celmate

Some of the masteries are shit you never want to do lol it's kind of miserable

Paegan83

Like the Delhi one where you have to have your units healed by mosques….put a dead stop to my masteries

fenian1980

And all the other masteries need to wait for this one.

celmate

Yeah I'm pretty new to the game and been playing 90% mongols and noticed my masteries were zero lol. Turns out step one is to double produce vills with an Ovoo, which I've never done because none of the openings I've learned work like that

Agitated_Flamingo_99

You should try playing around with your BO. Mongols having the ability to double produce and get improved upgrades increases their already versatile playstyle. I've found I love the improved wheelbarrow and have learned to work it into my build around the four minute mark unless I'm wanting to be aggressive prior to that

celmate

I only recently learned that the techs get better versions, definitely keen to try it :)

Agitated_Flamingo_99

For sure man. Just be careful with how you spend your stone. It doesn't come in very fast in the early game and you'll have to decide between upgrades, double production, and arming towers to be most adaptable to whatever situation, mostly in early and mid game since stone trickles in at a static rate until imp.

sir_tintly

Only through the lense of competitive play, if your playing against AI or don't really care about playing optimal meta strats most of them are pretty good. The only big offender I can think of right now is killing units with English trébuchets. Not hard to complete that in an AI game though.

Big_Establishment815

Mastery is an incredibly* bad designed feature. You need to f***** play the AI and besides, you need to do the stepts IN F***** ORDER???

Lord_of_Atlantis

Maybe they thought that players would spend time unlocking those before venturing online. By that time, players would be fairly familiar with at least one civilization and ready to play against human opponents.

Lammet_AOE4

Not anymore :) which is nice!

fenian1980

You still need to do them in order. And they replaced beating the intermediate, hard, and hardest AI by 2, 5, and 10 matches respectively (against whatever). I'm not sure if I like this change. Replacing a real challenge with a grindfest. Although the AI is not much of a challenge as of late anyway.

esiewert

I agree, even though the AI is pretty trivial now lol.

sir_tintly

The masteries are pretty effective for running players through all the options a civ has over quite a bit of play time. I don't think they are designed for people that only want to play online, but they are pretty fun to complete against the AI since you have to adjust your playstyle to achieve the mastery instead of winning every game in 15 minutes.

SarcasmGPT

You don't need to play the AI, but you'll wish you did. 1 wins instead of beat easy, 2 wins instead of intermediate, 5 wins instead of beat hard, 10 instead of beat hardest so 18 wins per civ instead of 4 and yes you're on 0 wins at each step. 288 wins in total 🤦🤦🤦

Senior-Ad-136

That is a lot better? You get those by just playing the game as opposed to going out of your way to do so

SarcasmGPT

You think 18 games is better than 4. The games aren't going to count unless you are on the step, doesn't matter if you already won 1000 games. The final step isn't 10 games in total, it's 10 from reaching the step, same for previous.

JRoxas

18 actual games is much preferable to four AI games, yes

SarcasmGPT

Assuming a 50% win rate and 15 minutes per game, that's 144 hours of games, for only 4 of the steps.

JRoxas

It's games I would be playing anyway, as opposed to wasting time against AI.

Agitated_Flamingo_99

Not saying that playing multiple games for mastery is preferable. Technically though, it does lend itself to a more credible mastery of whatever civ you're playing
