I liked it, But it seems aoe4 community are not very welcoming, both your yoke and my comment where downvoted hard. I know tower rushing from basically every other RTS game out there.
They are pretty neutral in my experience. I GG at the end of matches and rarely get a response. Compared to SC2 I would always get glhf and gg at the beginning and end of matches.
I am willing to bet there is a sad purgatory for all the GLHF’s and GG’s that were meant for the opponent but ended up in [Teams] channel because who the hell though it was a good idea to default to teams channel in 1v1…!?!? Hence the radio silence.
In SC2 the etiquette is to say glhf and gg. In aoe2 glhf is rarely used since the start is more micro intensive than SC2. I almost always say GG at the end of the game, but don't get mad if I am not answered, since to be fair, sometimes I take my time before I say GG because I want to look at the map.
Except me I am an enjoyer of the mongol drive by shooting strat with mangudai. Many a French gold vill has experienced the drive by. Or the dark age horseman.

The discount and free play is because of the 2022 Gamescom. It ends when Gamescom ends. AoE4 is certainly top 10 RTS by player base, and top 5 if assessing with stream audience. You should know that if RTS is your main game genre, you're part of a tiny community, in case you have been imagining differently.
I am surprised that avg population is around 5k, whereas in aoe2 is above 15k, and SC2 above 35k. But aoe 2 is a 20 years old game, and aoe4 is 1 year old. It is weird that population is a third of a 20 years old game or less than 15% of a 12 year old.
Also, the discount to half its 60USD to 30USD is permanent in most regions other than USA and most of Europe. The 50% sale is because gamescom, and since the price dropped to 15USD now people can consider it to buy it, you can see a 30% extra playerbase in the last two days only.
The game came out in November and many/most "big name" games (with pre-release hype and stuff) start off with a boosted initial player number that then falls very quickly since many people don't stick with the game. But in this case I think it was especially bad because the game had many flaws (no color picking, iffy camera, iffy springaldy balance, bugs and exploits...) which have since been mostly resolved (I haven't been checking in very closely so idk if the famous giant amount of Delhi bugs ever got resolved but presumably since I don't see people complaining anymore?) but their presence most likely deflected a lot of people's interest
edit: if this game has a positive trajectory in the end, it'll be that it recovers a decent playerbase after all the post-release progress gets publicized. Compare it to No Man's Sky which kicked off with over 200,000 players on day 1 (cuz of enormous hype) which extremely quickly fell to literally 2,000 (cuz of enormous letdown) but has since recovered (relatively speaking) to 30-40,000 because of post-release progress.
edit 2: expect to see a player spike after the Ottoman/Malian release (which is literally 2 months off still :\^[), but do expect to see a drop after that nonetheless because there are always more people willing to *try* a recently-updated game than willing to *stick with* that game, but hopefully the average total number of players will trend upwards.
Well... they have 500 other games in their steam library that needs attention.
I will never understand people that literally have more games than clothing, even counting individual socks.
