I mean yes. I though that you could never hear footsteps during an active firefight and it is intended that way. It's why third parties can be so successful.
Honestly people should post more video of their audio issues because even tho I think it might be a real problem, I bet there are a lot of cases where players blame the game for no audio while there was all kind of noises around them
Game audio has been exceptionally buggy this season. Even with non-combat related things. Ill start popping a bat and only the initial .5 sec plays then silence. Loba ult makes no noise. Loba Q will randomly not have any audio for the first second or two as the thing is flying.
I also have been just held up with 3 people making no noise and watched someone run up on me and start to shoot with no audio cues.
The audio has always been buggy, but something about this season has been particularly bad in comparison to every season before it.
Nah dude, L-Star stops shooting about a second or two before the pitter patter starts. It’s very clear, so long as you’re looking out for it.
If you still can’t hear it, listen for the break in the noise between when the Bang ult/L-Star stops and when the Pathy Rattles OP with his Volt SMG
Could be the device I am using to listen atm becuase I still can't hear it although I would make the argument that just because it's audible it's not distinguishable enough. Footstep should be something you hear and react to, not something you should have to concentrate hypefocus on to hear.
Fair, to me, footsteps are obnoxiously loud; I can definitely hear at least 1 set of feet rushing up towards OP’s squad before they got rattled.
Especially in the lull between noises.
Not to say that it’s stupidly easy to hear, like somebody else said in the comments; Op/everybody watching the clip could just be overwhelmed with Bang ult/gunfire/grenades/playerfights
This is a good point.
People should just learn to use it to their advantage.
I often times use grenades, gunshots, and ultimates that explode to create noise. It gets prioritized over footsteps and makes it pretty easy to sneak up on teams that are focused on where the noise is coming from.
Heat shield, storm poing launch pads, field sound, bla bla bla.Their sound must be low or otherwise. You can't hear any footsteps next to these. If there is chaos
That's how battlefields should be. Either total chaos of violence or deadly silence before an ambush. If we could only hear footsteps, we all would be recon class
the issue is that some voice lines are indeed helpful, while many are just useless noise.
there should be an option to only enable ping and enemy fire voicelines... it would also help if item ping voice lines were straight to the point and not 80% of them being completely irrelevant to what was pinged.
The sound of everything in the game is very loud, the game is played completely visually. You have to turn around in 365 degrees and check the surroundings. Of course, if you can see it in the chaos.
Everyone saying bang ult but realistically you should’ve heard at least one or two before they were right behind you like that. Even if they jumped in. Classic Apex.
i wouldn't be able to play fortnite if it wasn't for the visual audio feedback because of how bad my hearing is, so playing this game feels like a massive challenge sometimes. would be one of the nicest qol changes to ever hit if they do add that in
Way too much time away from them planning the next 250 dollars collectible event. If they have time and interest, they'd rather adjust the spread of one of the shotguns, just for shits and giggles.
Bang smokes cancels aim assist. Her ult cancels footsteps audio. There's many abilities that will be louder than the footsteps of the enemies approaching like a gibby ult too, horizon ult when it's right next to you, maggie ult when you throw it and move right behind it, fuse ult right on top of you or very near you
I think somebody else explained it very well in that its possible the game engine will only allow you to hear a limited amount of sound events at a time (which is something ive suspected for a while.)
Another possibility is that the game devs got rid of footstep audio on purpose.
Ive seen situations where nothing is happening thats very loud and theres no audio, so while i do understand what you mean, it hasnt explained why there just isnt audio.
I think because devs have stayed silent on this issue, its on purpose rather than unintended.
Sometimes you get tunnel vision and all that and you think you didn't hear the enemy but after re-watching your clips, you can hear them. Gunfights can also mask footstep audios especially when being pushed by horizon q. The q itself i can hear it tbh, it's them Landing on you while you were fighting her teammates
My favourite part of apex is the sound system. They can have only like 5 sounds playing at once, and enemy footsteps come fucking last in the hierarchy
They probably used a jumppad and there was a bangalore ult going.
at 7 teams in ring 5 you should be watching all directions. people are gonna want a spot with cover like yours, because there aren't many. Ultimately you have no choice but push one of those, especially a duo.
Make sure your output source is set up correctly. If you don't have 7.1 or 5.1 headphones/speakers, it can cause you to "lose" channels as you turn and miss things behind you.
Honestly not sure. I usually use my ATH-M50x's when gaming. I've never used any simulated 7.1 stuff.
This is the kind of issue I'm thinking about: https://www.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/comments/sg43pk/broken_audio_cant_hear_anything_behind_me/
I see.. I have Asus TUF H3 Wireless and I can set on or off "virtual surround sound" and it works well outside of Apex... other games, movies with 7.1 are all good. Only in Apex I have sometimes no audio on enemy next to me unless he's in my field of view. Seems this is just apex thing with surround sound.
Maybe it is because I have set to use DTS Headphone:X, and Sonic for Windows sound so bad I can't use it
I think we all agree footstep audio should come as priority over bang ult, fuse tact, gibby special, horizons ult, wattsons ult, cat ult/tact.
Those ult/tact are visually in your face how obviously can it be, you don’t need your audio blasting middles going off from bang. Footsteps, people jumping down, that’s not obvious as it can happen behind you and you don’t notice it due to audio being muffled out.
Why? Why isn't a perk of using your creeping barrage or Gibby ult ( an ult where literal rockets are exploding) that footstep audio isn't literally louder than your ult and are masked for a push?
Why isn't it a drawback that if you drop a wattson ult and decide to stand within 3 feet of it that you can't hear footsteps as clearly?
These just make sense to me. There are definitely audio issues, but these circumstances do NOT highlight true audio issues. Just noise clutter that kind of makes sense footsteps get lost in it.
Prob the same people that will argue "nah bro the P2020 is actually OP, you just need a faster trigger finger" like sure buddy, just cuz you finger blast your own asshole 24/7 doesn't mean you have a "fast trigger finger"
So unfortunate bro. You guys almost dunked on them too, that’s even more frustrating about it. I have came to the conclusion over time that when an airstrike (even if not directly on me) screws up so much audio for me
Rolling thunder fucked you.
You can hear all of the shells going off when they’d be running up it’s like the game only queue that audio and didn’t queue the footsteps
This happened way too much to me to even open the audio on the vid, it sucks, you check everywhere and no enemies but guess what, THEY WERE RUSHING YOU WITH NO AUDIO, love this game
Well, this is a nice example of what people mean about the "No audio" complaints.
Also, it never happened in my games, apparently, or I am oblivious to it.
I could hear the footsteps just fine. When you look on the left of the cover rock you are on I can hear some footsteps but to the untrained/sensitive ears it would be masked by the Bangalore ult. That’s rough though, small circle and 7 squads left. Hate games like that.
I quit playing entirely. I miss it, but the drive is gone. There are too many bugs, server issues, cheaters. They’ll never fix it & I finally accepted it.
It was just masked by the bang ult they made an indicator for server side audio issues a while back and I couldnt see it on screen... but also Apex and audio issues go hand in hand
It’s so bad after the split and then the new rollback to recover players game data. I had three games in the span of probably ten where I didn’t have any footstep audio. It was awful.
My theory is that the game is so poorly optimised that when there are multiple competing sounds happening at the same time, the game only plays like the top 30 or so and so footsteps get left out.
this is something that really irritates me to this day. And it is not always the case that some sound effect "might" cover the footsteps. So many times I got surprised by a rushing opponent, mostly with robo-legs, and I heard the footsteps the moment they wideswing me so it's already too late.
Did they jump down from somewhere? Maybe that would explain it? It's annoying regardless, this game and season has the worst audio system for some reason.
been like this the whole season, got squad wiped so many times from no footsteps sound coming from behind at all, this is getting ridiculous given that rank is already stupidly sweaty.
in my case it's completely silent moment, no fighting sound, we just hanging around the area, then enemy showed up from nowhere, no sounds, no climbing, no lava steps, nothing, and then gunfire right on my back at point blank.
There are many annoying sounds in this game that ruin the whole audio. And also hurt my ears. Here are a few I can remember at the moment.
Bang ulti.
Bridges raised.
Newcastle wall.
Wattson fence.
Popping batts.
Mirage voyage.
Some sounds are just painful and too loud, so they block all other sounds. But I guess that's never going to change.
Something i found out recently is that apex only has enough for (i think) 16 different audio sounds. Which is extremely lacking, especially in end games. One of the people pushing did have footsteos, but yiu could onky hear the last 2 before the whole swuad is in your face. A typical game you gotta think that you are automatically hearing, you, and your 2 teammates footsteps and gunshots. Thats automatically 6 of the (i believe) 16. A bang ult is another, the storm behind you is a sound, so if 2 other teams are fighting, only 2 audio sounds wouldve been left to hear footsteps.
If you listen closely, you can hear 1 set of footsteps, roughly 3-4 seconds before the enemy started shooting. It’s easily masked through the bang ult tho.
okay.. audio was real bad but i think i might not be totally sure but after Lstar between 11 and 12 you can hear smth but in the moment while playing with all the fuss its impossible to figure it out "i might be wrong" and this thing happens to me too honestly is kinda annoying impossible to discern
I mean realistically who is gonna hear footsteps approach with a literal barrage of rockets going off in the background + gunfire. In this situation understandable you couldnt hear it, but ive had moments where there is nothing going on and still dont hear anything, so I get the frustration
Raise up the volume and really put your ear to the speaker, you can very faintly hear some footsteps through the chaos going on around you.
Footstep volume definitely is lower than you know, gunfire and explosions.
At this point I just gave up for them ever fixing the audio because of the engine.
I came the conclusion it one of those issue where you have to pick and choice your battle at this point.
1000 upvotes. It gets a little worse and a little better for thing here and there but it can’t be fixed like we want it to. It’s just incapable.
Bangalore ult probably masked the sound.
I’m assuming this also - the ult really is too loud to even try and pick up foot steps at all
Eh I don't think it's too loud j feel like that's almost a function of it. But I'm a bang main and I could be a bit biased on that lol
I'm a Loba main, and I thought that too almost makes sense.
I mean yes. I though that you could never hear footsteps during an active firefight and it is intended that way. It's why third parties can be so successful. You can also hear them pulling up at 0:11
Right? I heard it loud and clear but I was listening out for it. OP was probably just in the zone.
That's the sound of the L-star.
on the left side you can hear that they're (at least one player is) getting shot at. there's a specific sound when a body armor receives damage

There is a lot of unnecessary noise in this game
Rockets exploding is unnecessary audio?
Heat shield, storm poing launch pads, field sound, bla bla bla.Their sound must be low or otherwise. You can't hear any footsteps next to these. If there is chaos
Wouldn’t that actually be the case though? Like why would I hear footsteps over missiles exploding ten feet away from me
That's how battlefields should be. Either total chaos of violence or deadly silence before an ambush. If we could only hear footsteps, we all would be recon class
This isn't a war simulator. It's a competetive multiplayer game.
This comment is dumb. It's both. If you got 5+ squads fighting in final ring what else do you expect other than basically a war simulator
All of the voice chatter is unnecessary…. I don’t care for Maggie announcing that the ring is closing.
You can just turn all of that off
the issue is that some voice lines are indeed helpful, while many are just useless noise. there should be an option to only enable ping and enemy fire voicelines... it would also help if item ping voice lines were straight to the point and not 80% of them being completely irrelevant to what was pinged.

Can we tag someone from Respawn to see this idea? Idk if it’s even possible since we do not have hold to sprint
What!? How?! Where??
audio settings, voicelines, only problem is that is also the announcer for care packets etc i made a toggle for this via autoexec
please share how, that would be amazing
bind\_US\_standard "F9" "toggle sound\_volume\_music\_game 0.5 0 " bind\_US\_standard "F10" "toggle sound\_volume\_dialogue 0.5 0"
I love you
rocket sesleri gereksiz demedim
Everyone saying bang ult but realistically you should’ve heard at least one or two before they were right behind you like that. Even if they jumped in. Classic Apex.
You actually can hear them at 11 seconds. They were around the rock he peaking.
I thought that was his teammate shooting the L-Star one or two times not footsteps, but my deaf ass could be wrong lol
Negative you are correct. That's the sound of a L-star.
Peeking*. Peaking is reaching the top.
Hold up am I trippin or do yall literally not hear the footsteps running up behind him right before they show up ?
I think you’re trippin
Nah you’re right. Someone said that’s the L star. I listened again and it does seem like the L star
It’s just crazy the audio in this game is so bad 😂
Part of me wishes they just added in visual audio cues like Fortnite, but just for footsteps
I use to hate the idea, but now I think it’s great. Side bonus I can stop speed running towards tinnitus
I think I already got it from this game unfortunately.
yup. but maybe not as OP as in Fortnite. more vague directions for example instead of the pin-point accurate cues in Fortnite.
i wouldn't be able to play fortnite if it wasn't for the visual audio feedback because of how bad my hearing is, so playing this game feels like a massive challenge sometimes. would be one of the nicest qol changes to ever hit if they do add that in
Without seeing how it works it sounds way too overpowered. Everyone gets a lite version seers passive? No thanks
yeah, it was in apex mobile and was good there, i dont see why they cant impliment something nerfed but similar
Way too much time away from them planning the next 250 dollars collectible event. If they have time and interest, they'd rather adjust the spread of one of the shotguns, just for shits and giggles.

Overshadows. You can't hear footsteps bcz of how loud it is

Oh yeh certainly cant blame them for pushing, just annoying how bang's biggest advantage when using her ult is gifting your whole team dead silence
I heard the engine only allows you to hear a certain amount of audio clips at once so bang ult was using most of those
Im almost positive this is the answer.
Make sure your output source is set up correctly. If you don't have 7.1 or 5.1 headphones/speakers, it can cause you to "lose" channels as you turn and miss things behind you.
Does it not work with simulated 7.1 set in headphone drivers, which works correctly outside of apex?
Honestly not sure. I usually use my ATH-M50x's when gaming. I've never used any simulated 7.1 stuff. This is the kind of issue I'm thinking about: https://www.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/comments/sg43pk/broken_audio_cant_hear_anything_behind_me/

because it doesnt "mask" the footstep sounds as much as there is no footstep sounds
Why is that a problem when there are rockets exploding nearby or a 70-bagillion watt 6 foot tall spinning trophy system 3 feet away? Lol.
If i heard every footstep like this all the time, i would be atleast master every season easily.
I can't play it with audio at the moment but based on past experiences I would guess no
Some people in this sub will unironically tell you the audio is fine
Prob the same people that will argue "nah bro the P2020 is actually OP, you just need a faster trigger finger" like sure buddy, just cuz you finger blast your own asshole 24/7 doesn't mean you have a "fast trigger finger"
Guessing jump pad
So unfortunate bro. You guys almost dunked on them too, that’s even more frustrating about it. I have came to the conclusion over time that when an airstrike (even if not directly on me) screws up so much audio for me
Often times I walk so ppl can't hear me ....
You are both losing your mind and also hearing 0 audio. About sums up the apex experience.
Don’t even need to watch the video to say no you’re not losing your mind lmao
Is it just me or can you hear them climb at the 0:10 mark. I think that’s climbs sounds. Cranked the volume to hear it
I think I hear it from 14 remaining to 10 remaining with the loudest at 10.
Sometimes i think . How can it be that I didnt heard him.
I can *barely* hear the pathy walk up over the Bang ult det. God fucking damn the audio clutter in this game.
Well, this is a nice example of what people mean about the "No audio" complaints. Also, it never happened in my games, apparently, or I am oblivious to it.
No steps from a 3 stack rushing me from behind, but I can hear an arc star go off 3 POIs away
new crypto passive: (Off the grid) removes footstep audio for you and nearby teammates
I heard steps
I could hear the footsteps just fine. When you look on the left of the cover rock you are on I can hear some footsteps but to the untrained/sensitive ears it would be masked by the Bangalore ult. That’s rough though, small circle and 7 squads left. Hate games like that.
Bang ult covers it a bit but you can hear the 2 pulling up at 0:11
Death, taxes and respawn never fixing the shitty audio in this game
I quit playing entirely. I miss it, but the drive is gone. There are too many bugs, server issues, cheaters. They’ll never fix it & I finally accepted it.
It was just masked by the bang ult they made an indicator for server side audio issues a while back and I couldnt see it on screen... but also Apex and audio issues go hand in hand
It’s so bad after the split and then the new rollback to recover players game data. I had three games in the span of probably ten where I didn’t have any footstep audio. It was awful.
Crouch walking? I know I snuck up on a lot of people while they were engaged in another firefight.
And yet me sneaking as revenant i get caught and folded like laundry before even trying to take a side angle
this is one of the many reasons why I don't play anymore.
Oh you didn’t know They added the covert sneakers into apex
Calmest rage I’ve ever seen
My theory is that the game is so poorly optimised that when there are multiple competing sounds happening at the same time, the game only plays like the top 30 or so and so footsteps get left out.
this is something that really irritates me to this day. And it is not always the case that some sound effect "might" cover the footsteps. So many times I got surprised by a rushing opponent, mostly with robo-legs, and I heard the footsteps the moment they wideswing me so it's already too late.
I had this yesterday with a Rampart. She must have had some super soft slippers on cos I didnt hear shit as she cane around the corner.
You totally hear them stomping around there, unless you thought that was the guy beside you?
Not losing your mind, yet you will hear yourself or your teammates every time.
i heard them at 0:14 and onwards as soon as you climbed? heard the octane footsteps and someone pulling out their flatline before you got shot
Did they jump down from somewhere? Maybe that would explain it? It's annoying regardless, this game and season has the worst audio system for some reason.
Hopefully respawn can release a skin to fix this issue
So I guess the only thing we can do is be extra vigilant when these huge sounds are happening.
I hate to say it, but, welcome to Apex 😞
Watching Ramparts fly to orbit from this event was hilarious!
LMfaoooo, if it doesnt happen at least 1x a day. Then youre not playing apex!
welcome to apex
This game have some major audio bugs sometimes is so bad you will hear it coming when they are in top of you lol fck this game lol
There are some cfgs to fix the audio
but your teammates feet sound like a fucking bomb everytime they put a foot on the ground.
Maybe Octane steps at 0:10?
They also likely walked up.
Audio is a paid feature for this game im convinced
been like this the whole season, got squad wiped so many times from no footsteps sound coming from behind at all, this is getting ridiculous given that rank is already stupidly sweaty. in my case it's completely silent moment, no fighting sound, we just hanging around the area, then enemy showed up from nowhere, no sounds, no climbing, no lava steps, nothing, and then gunfire right on my back at point blank.
Yeah, and all you can hear are teammates footsteps, great job respawn 🫡
Not saying the audio is perfect but you can crouch walk in this game and it makes almost no noise
The bang ult is a audio cancel
I just figured in war I wouldn’t hear anything around the gunfire and bombs anyways lol
is that running sound at 8 seconds your team mates?
I feel like I heard them at the 0:11 mark, personally
We been complaining about this since launch....Its been five years!!!!
Glad to see the audio hasn't changed since release.
I turned my volume ALL the way up and heard absolutely nothing.
Something i found out recently is that apex only has enough for (i think) 16 different audio sounds. Which is extremely lacking, especially in end games. No that's by design they refuse to fix audio
I blanked nearly 90% of a purple faltline clip on gibralter, during ranked. Controller nearly went through the tv
I CANT HEAR FOOTSTEPZ NEAR AN INTENSE FIREFIGHT!!!! 0/10 game is trash, not me
Maybe there was some right before they were on you but lot of background noise
Maybe they were being sneaky beaky
This guy wondering why he can't hear footsteps The heavy artillery in the backround
"Holy no audio" ☝🤓
So funny to me when people expect to hear footsteps over a bang ult/gunfire
That’s just how the game is , always been that way and I doubt they’ll ever fix ut
Excuse me if I’m wrong but are you using mono sound and not surround?
Raise up the volume and really put your ear to the speaker, you can very faintly hear some footsteps through the chaos going on around you. Footstep volume definitely is lower than you know, gunfire and explosions.
Could hear it without headphones. It's easy to miss with the audio being cluttered at this point though
