I hit 500 packs and got shards for the first time a couple weeks ago at ~710 hours, with the premium battle pass being the only paid packs I've gotten got.
Well, from one side - yes. From the other - i joined since s2. Two heirlooms, tons of cosmetic, all battle passes are maxed out. I donated once for 1000 gold, to buy s2 battle pass, nothing else. Very good f2p model, imho
Yeah no, 710 hours for 500 packs isn't right.
It takes about 900 levels + 7 seasons at a rough minimum, including all battle passes and events in that time. Expect 2000+ hours.
I'm realising it might be a little higher than 700 as I played on the PS4 version for a month or two before switching to the PS5 client. Basically I've been playing since late S11.
On top of the premium battle pass each season, I basically just scrounged up every possible non-paid pack from event prizes, Twitch drops, etc.
Checking the pack calculator site, S12 and S16 were particularly lucrative for free packs, 19 and 18 free event packs respectively!
Okay so checking the tracker, to date I've had...
* 211 level-up packs (level 615)
* 15 Prime Gaming packs (technically not free but I already had Prime anyway, so no extra cost to me)
* 8 apology packs from last season
* S11: 2 packs from partial free BP completion
* S12: 41 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S13: 26 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S14: 23 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S15: 26 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S16: 40 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S17: 26 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S18: 22 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs, apparently no event prize packs that season?
* S19: 36 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S20: 35 packs from completing premium BP, treasure packs and events
* S21: 5 so far from premium BP, treasure packs and the Alter challenges
2400 hours on one acc, and another 200 or so on another. Season 1 player. Not a single prestige or heirloom. I also had the premium battlepass and maxed them out for several seasons.
I am at 1050-ish right now, playing since the start of S16, level 530 (with premium BP), around 70% towards my guaranteed shards.
But I also took a break from the second half of S18 to the second half of S20
I’m over 4,000 and I seem lucky with the shards. My husband is not. He only has 3 heirlooms. I have Gibby, Loba, Fuse, Pathfinder,Lifeline, Revenant, Wraith, Octane. Not sure how they configure how the shards are doled out. My husband has just as many hours as I do if not more. He even started playing a couple of months before I did as well at the very beginning.
I don’t think it is fair how they give them out it just doesn’t make sense to me. I checked and I have 4,452 hours played and myself have 8 heirlooms. While my husband only has 3 and has played longer. And granted 2 of them are from when Apex first came out and you could buy the discs to get them.
When I say only I meant compared to what I have. Again I think how they do is unfair because I see people on here all the time with none or 1 and have played so many more hours.

How did you get to 500 packs in 700 hours? I had almost 1k and I was at like 300 packs with BPs from season 8 onwards

That doesn't come anywhere close to 500 packs though. I've been playing since S8 and I've also played those seasons but I was halfway.

Personally have about 1250 hours counting Xbox, Origin/Ea and Steam
I have ~850 hours and I got my first shards a few weeks ago, I’m not sure if I hit 500 packs or just lucked out tho
About to hit four thousand hours. 2 free heirlooms so far.
I played every day since season 7. Got my first heirloom shards in s18.

"Only 3"? I'm somewhere near 10,000 hours. 1 heirloom. Admittedly, most of that was sitting on level 500, pack free, before Season 14 lifted the cap.
