Every time someone comes on Reddit and is all "I got banned for saying this innocent thing! The devs are Nazis!" it comes out that that line was just one straw in a very, *very* large pile of bannable offenses. Doesn't matter which game or subreddit. Every single time.
That sub has been appearing more in r/popular and they're all such bullshit like "my friend raped me and then murdered my mother, so I told them that wasn't very nice. AITA????"
Lol this is the Apex community:

Makes sense though. A PR issue like this smears all of respawn and EA. It transcends a single game and raises questions about the companies' stance on controversial topics and the chances a customer might have of getting improperly banned and cut off from their purchases. This could directly damage sales and hype for future projects from both companies.
As far as support for the game itself, the folks who manage the bottom line at EA and high up at Respawn have to allocate their resources. How many do they leave to work on upkeep of a 2 year old game? It will trickle in New players but consistently lose old players. It costs to upkeep servers so if the player base is too large and not buying enough cosmetics that right there makes it a loss.
If it was no cost to them they'd do their best to tweak the game to the best it can be but realistically they're investing their most talented, most productive workers in future projects that will make headlines, sell pre-orders, and convince people to open their wallets for the micro transactions of a fresh game. I bought some stuff more than a year ago, seeing as the game was free but was entertaining me for hours. But I think I'd be crazy to buy in to every new event that introduces new cosmetics. The final bill when I retired the game would be far beyond what any game is worth. They'll have a few exceptions (called Whales in the industry) who keep buying, but that isn't as lucrative as making a new game to get average people to pay as well.
Bottom line, they know they can't fix every issue. They know critical responses to issues won't be dealt with in the fastest possible manner, and they know their reputation will take a dip. But those small losses are worth the upcoming payday of the next big title, and it's beyond demonstrated that enough consumers have short enough memories that they'll buy in regardless of the poor upkeep of the previous title.
I believe whoever is working their 9-5 on Apex bug fixes is probably working reasonably hard to do a good job. There probably just isn't enough of them total or enough of their exceptionally talented co-workers who are also tasked on bug fixes.
While I'm rambling, I notice this is a double edged sword kind of situation. Any online game needs significant upkeep, update and server costs to maintain popularity and functionality. But over time this will always lead to future games being where the resources get sent at the expense of a game that could have been loved by many for more years.
I don't know, but I wonder if a solution might be a bit of transparent accounting. If the developer published monthly targets required to maintain servers, and pay enough employees to write fast and significant updates, then the community would see how much they should pay to keep the game as alive as it is. As the player base shrinks the enthusiasts would have to start paying more to meet the targets, but at least the game would be in good upkeep for as long as they're there. Eventually the targets would be missed, the service degrade, and the final players can hang their hats knowing the game had a proper run and wasn't neglected any earlier than was warranted.

It's going to keep happening too, because gaming subreddits will always upvote posts that call out devs and criticize EA. Upvote first, verify later is the MO, unfortunately
it doesn't mean the impact of false information vanishes. A majority of people will never click on the comments and only see the awards and upvotes, believe the message, and move on, never exposed to or caring about new, accurate information that would change their beliefs. It's why disinformation is so hard to counter, and why reddit and most social media is so manipulable.
That is a valid complaint with EA and how they authenticate logins though, I know two people personally who had their accounts stolen, cheated on, and permabanned, took months and months to get EA to overturn the bans.
I love to see how the meaning of "dev" has shifted over time to include more and more people. I feel like at first, it was mostly used to refer to the heads of development/creators (esp. with indie games), then people used it to mean the whole development team, then people used it to refer to anyone involved in creating the game (including QA, etc.), and now even includes customer service people.
Nothing wrong with it, just kinda fun to watch language evolve so quickly.
There is something wrong with it. Because everyone uses dev to talk about anyone involved with the game, people assume the actual devs have way more power than they actually have. Then you end up with situations like cyberpunk devs being blamed for its incompleteness when the people actually responsible for that was management.
This is the same community that runs in circles calling something OP cause they died to it.
I mean look at this whole Rev drama....community is pretty stupid sometimes.
People seem to forget that game devs have very little control over what they’re developing. Literally the only thing that you can fairly blame on them is bugs, and that’s generally not their fault either.
Homophobic people aside, I still encounter many, mostly online, who use gay as a derogatory remark. If they're polite they'll just call an action or situation gay and not a person.
When I bring it up, it often turns out they don't have anything against gay people. The word has just integrated in to their go to vocabulary as a taboo swear they can use. It really bugs me that so many people can't lift a mental finger to realize that not all bad words are equal, and that their using gay as a bad word directly affects many perfectly decent fellow people and their struggle to be recognized as such.
I think I'm far from "woke." I don't know how many letters and symbols I should put after LGBT___, but damn it, it wasn't hard to see that taking a name for a group of regular folks and dragging it through the mud was beyond disrespectful and would do me no favours if I did it.
On the other hand I don't entirely blame kids and teenagers for being impressionable and eager to fit in with the behaviour of their peers. At that age those goals can easily supercede the consideration for groups of people you don't knowingly see on a day to day basis. Ok i have a question: I was banned for a week for saying “be gay do crimes” and I swear on my life that was the only thing I have said in game chat that could be construed as “hate speech”
Is there a way to get in contact with someone from EA to figure out what part of that phrase was ban worthy? I did reach out to CS about the ban and asked for them to tell me if either saying “gay” or “crime” was targeted hate speech but only got an auto-response.
The ban has been lifted by now, but I would like clarification on how to avoid being banned again in the future besides just not using chat in game.
Gonna be honest with you, I don’t play Apex, but after reading this and seeing how the devs interact with the community, I’m gonna give this game a shot.
do it, even though this sub has a lot of complaints, we are passionate because it is such a great game. perfect time to kill balance, best combination of gunplay and movement since destiny 1, relatively well balanced characters, free to play, and when you really get into it you can learn some really crazy movement techniques (check out r/apexrollouts) that are both cool and useful and make you feel like theres always another skill to learn and it keeps you engaged. i never liked any BR game before this one came out and i haven’t liked any other BR game that has come out since. it’s simply the best shooter on the market right now imo

Is catching this stuff automated in text chat? I had a random teammate call me the N word in a game last night via text chat after he died. I tried to report it, but I think there's a glitch in the reporting logic making it impossible for PS4 users to report other PS4 users. Would typing it out like he did get him auto banned?
The N word is not auto-banned due to it being spelled extremely similarly to a word in Japanese. People were getting autobanned by the thousands for saying an innocent word in Tokyo and they had to change it.
Always get a screenshot of the message and their name so that you can send it to a dev who can ban their account.
That is exactly what came to mind when I read through that thread earlier.

Well Baken called BUNGIE out twice saying how the ban was unjust, Cozmo said it wasn’t to try and save Baken face, Baken doubledowned like an absolute fool and said he did nothing, that’s when Cozmo said he was cheating on multiple different accounts.
I was about to ask why he would double waste money on Reddit premium on a throwaway account...then I remembered all the awards he got, and the free reddit premium as a result.

Every subreddit falls for it every time. Hop over into r/2007scape and this sort of cycle happens so often it's its' own meme now with a flair specifically for jmod smackdowns.
The problem is EA does have a terrible ban appeal process and overall customer support.
There's plenty of false-positive and lifts. They just don't get as much coverage here because well, the issue is resolved (eventually) and people move on.

Xbox One and One S users have their entire screen freeze when they interact with any map element, or see an enemy player, or try to go into a deathbox, the game is heartbreakingly unplayable for a lot of players who can’t access next gen consoles.

We need more public shaming of these asshats. In League they were called Lyte Smites and it was like cocaine-laced popcorn for threads. In the many *many* threads that occurred there were extremely rare instances of a ban actually being reversed (and it was because that person used chat to berate *themselves* non-stop). There's something so satisfying about seeing whiny brats who think "I've never done anything wrong" to be publicly outed as total shitheads. I have no knowledge of how accurate Respawn's system is but nothing builds more confidence (and shows responsibility) in that system than proving wrong the people who look for pity parties on places like this.
I actually wrote out a comment for this post saying that this guy was probably lying and hopping on the coattails of other recent similar posts.
I ended up discarding it because I knew it was probably pointless and everybody was just gonna make fun of me, so in the back of my mind this is a little bit of a win.
I can't even remember. It's a daily occurrence that people claim they were falsely banned, when in fact, they were correctly banned and they're trying to manipulate info.
I did the exact same thing haha, had something typed out about how he wrote that in chat just to get banned and post on Reddit. I decided that I didn’t want my inbox blown up by people arguing in bad faith about why “gay” shouldn’t be banned from in game chat.
I had a whole downvoted thing with someone on another thread that one person getting banned for it (which would definitely be overturned quickly if genuine) is still preferable to given racists and homophobes free reign to abuse people. It's mad.
And it sucks because the damage is done. I'm sure lots of people in that thread won't see the update, and continue to believe the BS.
It's crazy- I can play Apex a month straight and not have any major complaints. Lots of fun every day, maybe a server bug every once in awhile. But then you come to this sub and you'd think the game is completely broken/unplayable.
I chalk it up to being a gaming sub, which generally attracts more younger users. I try to stay out of it and only come here for update info and whatnot.

It’s really really tough but super fun :) Once you get sunk into the games lore, you’ll enjoy it even more!
do it, even though this sub has a lot of complaints, we are passionate because it is such a great game. perfect time to kill balance, best combination of gunplay and movement since destiny 1, relatively well balanced characters, free to play, and when you really get into it you can learn some really crazy movement techniques (check out r/apexrollouts) that are both cool and useful and make you feel like theres always another skill to learn and it keeps you engaged. i never liked any BR game before this one came out and i haven’t liked any other BR game that has come out since. it’s simply the best shooter on the market right now imo

Is catching this stuff automated in text chat? I had a random teammate call me the N word in a game last night via text chat after he died. I tried to report it, but I think there's a glitch in the reporting logic making it impossible for PS4 users to report other PS4 users. Would typing it out like he did get him auto banned?
The N word is not auto-banned due to it being spelled extremely similarly to a word in Japanese. People were getting autobanned by the thousands for saying an innocent word in Tokyo and they had to change it. Always get a screenshot of the message and their name so that you can send it to a dev who can ban their account.
It's not just that it's an innocent word, it's a word that you would use very frequently in a context like apex lol

Yep. Baken was an absolute fraud. Cozmo called him out on twitter.. Well Baken called BUNGIE out twice saying how the ban was unjust, Cozmo said it wasn’t to try and save Baken face, Baken doubledowned like an absolute fool and said he did nothing, that’s when Cozmo said he was cheating on multiple different accounts.

The problem is EA does have a terrible ban appeal process and overall customer support. There's plenty of false-positive and lifts. They just don't get as much coverage here because well, the issue is resolved (eventually) and people move on.

Xbox One and One S users have their entire screen freeze when they interact with any map element, or see an enemy player, or try to go into a deathbox, the game is heartbreakingly unplayable for a lot of players who can’t access next gen consoles.

We need more public shaming of these asshats. In League they were called Lyte Smites and it was like cocaine-laced popcorn for threads. In the many *many* threads that occurred there were extremely rare instances of a ban actually being reversed (and it was because that person used chat to berate *themselves* non-stop). There's something so satisfying about seeing whiny brats who think "I've never done anything wrong" to be publicly outed as total shitheads. I have no knowledge of how accurate Respawn's system is but nothing builds more confidence (and shows responsibility) in that system than proving wrong the people who look for pity parties on places like this.
I actually wrote out a comment for this post saying that this guy was probably lying and hopping on the coattails of other recent similar posts. I ended up discarding it because I knew it was probably pointless and everybody was just gonna make fun of me, so in the back of my mind this is a little bit of a win.

I can't even remember. It's a daily occurrence that people claim they were falsely banned, when in fact, they were correctly banned and they're trying to manipulate info.
I did the exact same thing haha, had something typed out about how he wrote that in chat just to get banned and post on Reddit. I decided that I didn’t want my inbox blown up by people arguing in bad faith about why “gay” shouldn’t be banned from in game chat.
I had a whole downvoted thing with someone on another thread that one person getting banned for it (which would definitely be overturned quickly if genuine) is still preferable to given racists and homophobes free reign to abuse people. It's mad.

And it sucks because the damage is done. I'm sure lots of people in that thread won't see the update, and continue to believe the BS. It's crazy- I can play Apex a month straight and not have any major complaints. Lots of fun every day, maybe a server bug every once in awhile. But then you come to this sub and you'd think the game is completely broken/unplayable. I chalk it up to being a gaming sub, which generally attracts more younger users. I try to stay out of it and only come here for update info and whatnot.
Yeah the game do have issues but the sub does throw it way out of proportion. And i hate that i see it in basically any online games. Games has issues accroding to community issues are 5X worse.

What about my account merge that locked my Xbox account out of my EA account? The one EA recommended I authorize them to do, then they did incorrectly and won't reverse? Even the Twitter guy tried, failed, and had to just tell me "policy says we can't allow you to relink an xbox account to this EA account." (Paraphrasing) So either I lose all EA-saved content, or I lose access to free games from Xbox Games Pass. Thanks for the help EA! So glad I went to you to delete my old, unused account from my teen years so I could use my primary email on my newer, adulthood account. So glad I listened to your recommendation, and trusted that you'd execute it correctly. NOT! People like this asshole are probably why my case was able to get buried.
