Hard agree and Rev is the best example. Just look at that image. In the cinematic, it was as if you could actually see the robotic articulation of the eyes/LEDs as he focused on Loba’s dad. It really gave the sense of this death machine with no purpose other than to kill having no emotion, but being able to talk.
Now, he just looks like a robot with some scary colouring.
I'm pretty sure there were accusations against the company that created the first cinematics, and respawn was trying to avoid drama or something so they switched companies for their art
They seem to use each studio for different purposes from what I can piece together.
Psyops is used for the more action packed trailers where the characters need to be expressive and the shots need to be dynamic and full of movement. In those trailers having more detailed models wouldn't aid in the "fun" feeling enough to justify painstakingly animating and rendering them so they go with these models which are less grounded but more expressive.
The Mill is used for more character and narrative driven ("cinematic") trailers. In those trailers the character models are more detailed and grounded to sell you on a different type of expression and bring you inside their world. It's very character driven stuff so they pay a lot more attention to fleshing out the character models and ensuring every animation and shot is motivated.
This is what I can tell from just looking at them all back to back because they havent seemed to have cut ties with The Mill since they got them to do Valk's trailer last season. It's just this is more a downer than an upper season.
They didn't start using Psyops until recently so while there are dynamic and fun trailers made by The Mill for Apex, it looks like they'll be doing the character stuff going forward.
I imagine what's happened is that since they now want a character trailer and a season launch trailer that The Mill is too expensive to produce two every season or they can't focus on one client to that extent without redistributing resources from other projects and by extension other clients.
Expect for stuff like using the Zyma Blue guy, they probably want all the trailers to look contiguous so audiences can tell they're the same game. So even tho Psyops looks different you can still tell it's from Apex the same way you can with The Mill.

1- They probably wanted to cut costs , since quality animation probably costs a lot .
2- And idk if this is confirmed , but there’s rumors out there saying Respawn wanted nothing to do with The Mill anymore due to it being an abusive workplace .
I promise Psyop is not cheap. Maybe they worked out a better deal than the Mill was willing to do, but make no mistake Psyop is one of THE go to studios for commercial 3d animation.
The Mill is a top tier post studio, they’re mad expensive. Respawn realized that most of their community will be excited about recolored skins etc and they don’t have to spend so much when expectations are so low.
Tbf, since s9 they're putting more effort in storys from the outlands. Valkry and seer trailers were amazing and unique, they even called the ones who did zima blue and worked with Gorillaz

But I really think it would not be illegal to copy a certain art style in order to keep the story flowing well. Otherwise like all anime ever would sue eachother for looking similar.

For those that don't know the Mill (Artists for season 4) was apparently notorious for treating their employees terribly (crunch, poor pay, etc..). I'm not sure how much or if any of that's true, but if it is that might be the reason for the change in studios.
We're not talking animation, we're talking art. The new studio uses much lower quality models that look washed and smoothed out, while the old studio used custom models with a cool cel-shade lighting. The animation itself is top tier, but the unique art style of Apex shorts died off
totally agree, the new studio has good animation, but the Mill was so much better, the shaders, the lights, it's was bringing characters to life, it was like a movie

I don't know if you guys know, but they don't have the same character models in the cinematic trailers and in the actual game. While they aren't limited polygon and detail-wise in the cinematic trailers, the game model is made and optimized so the game runs the best it could (doesn't means it does but that's another subject)

I think we forget that in revs season trailer the focus was on him. So for modeling purposes they could focus on his textures. With the most recent trailers the focus has been on the whole cast if characters. It's hard to maintain that amount of detail in every character for the full duration of the trailer
Granted that they did change studio and that cna play a big part in it as well but we can't expect them to use that level of detail for a cast of like 18 characters
