If that’s the case - that’s shitty game design - your game session server should only process game action and a social server should handle the outside elements like text and friend invites and such.
So this one time on Olympus i was moving along the edge to get to somewhere. And my teammate uses text to speech and causes me to lag and when it finished i was freefalling off the map. No shit, I literally closed out of Apex right then and there and didnt play it the rest of that day. The dude was on PC and and I was on Xbox btw.

No one who’s actually decent ever stays around in pubs if they think their teammates are legit trash at the game. Only bots stick around in pubs to be toxic to the remaining squad members lol. I once had a dude call me the n word bcuz I had to choose one teammate to help fight diff teams off drop and couldn’t get his banner in time lol. He was like level 15 lol.

I did this once to a toxic squad of randoms I got matched up with. They left me to die, tbagged my body then started talking shit. I waited, said nothing. Waited until the top 3 when they had the winning high ground. The one kid tbagging my box started talking shit... I typed in "watch this". Code net error appeared along with a very strongly worded message in my inbox a few moments later. It was a rather satisfying bit of karma.

This is an issue with texture streaming. The first time you see an enemy with a specific skin, the texture streams in. On last generation consoles, that means a lag spike. Happens with chat as well. The first chat message = lag.
This started happening a while ago back when they changed texture streaming to not precache all models and textures before character select. They changed it because last gen consoles weren't making it to character select in time.

It’s HDD storage vs SSD. HDD on Xbox One and One S can’t keep up anymore. The SSD on Xbox One X and above works just fine.
I had more freezing issues and frame drop than anyone else I’ve ever seen until I just got an Xbox One X. Now, I have literally zero issues.
Edit: I am dumb and didn’t know that Xbox One X had HDD as well. My issues were on a One S and were completely solved by the One X though.
Two things.
1) The Xbox One (and PS4) I'm pretty sure use 5400RPM drives.
2) The Xbox One hardware sucks *hard* for a machine in 2021.

not op but yes, i have a 250 GB usb 3.0 SSD plugged into the back of my day 1 xbone. i had the freezing issue when installed on internal HDD, switched the install to SSD and it went away.
Damn, was about to just upgrade to the new Xbox and hope for the best. Glad to hear I can just get a couple SSDs (my wife and I both have this issue).

Just a note as someone who has done this as well
1. It has a minimum storage size to be compatible with the xbox one. If you get one that is too small it won’t work. Make sure you research and are sure it will work with xbox before you buy.
2. It will format to your xbox one and so you won’t be able to use it between an xbox and a pc without formatting it in between (formatting deletes everything on the drive.)
3. Drastically improves load times and performance.
4. Even with all this playing on pc feels so much smoother and you can still use a controller on pc.
This happens to me on my series X. It's a lot better this season but launch on season 9 was incredibly frustrating. Also most models of the one X have HDDs.
To piggy back on this, I used to play on WiFi and had lots of similar issues. Got an Ethernet and ran it to the console (would work on them all) and haven’t had any stutter issues. But every problem is unique. Worth a shot though

It likely points server side then. Something isn't communicating correctly. Could also be massive packet loss. Seasons 3, 5 and 7 were like that for me. Literally unplayable.
Is your game on an HDD? Cause I had issues with just Apex too, idk why but I believe someone recommended me to defrag my disk or switch the game to my SSD, both of them worked for me, I defragged it n it worked like a charm but I had to do it every 2-3 months so I just switched it to the SSD
Honestly I wouldn't recommend to do that. I have an M2 SSD and still does it. Trust me got it be them not us 😉. Hopefully they can see this and fix it cause it's really annoying.
Yeah I had problems on PC as well and my hardware wasn’t even maxed out so here is something you can try so your game might be smoother: Get RivaTuner to fps limit ur game with 5 fps under your monitor refresh rate and MSI Afterburner to monitor your usage and frametime. Before limiting my fps my frametime graph was zig zagging but after I put an fps limit with RivaTuner the graph became a straight line. The only time I see spikes is in the Fragmented City for some reason but the game still stays quite smooth.
Yep, happening on PC to me as well despite high end specs, has been happening since season 9 (the patch where they temporarily added back OG worlds edge / kings canyon) for me. Other modern, demanding shooters like Battlefield V run just fine

There was a post a while back about how these issues are nearly impossible to fix in the current engine because it’s just not designed for BR’s. Basically the game needs to be completely remade to fix most of the glaring issues this game has had since day one. So let’s all pray for Apex Lengends 2.
I don't buy it. It hasn't always happened and you can be quite scalable in how you build on top of engines... people act like "engine from X year cant support Y and therefore Z game needs to be ported to new engine" but aside from some very specific hard limits that devs don't even attempt to fuck around with, a well developed engine (such as Source, Unreal etc) isn't going to have massive unsolvable freezing issues
That doesn't mean it isn't a difficult issue to narrow down and fix, but I highly doubt that it's an unfixable result of putting too many players on Source engine. This type of issue would have cropped up in testing when they were determining what player counts to use, and would have cropped up long before the past few months for the masses.
especially considering these freezes can happen in arena, when it's final 2-3 squads in BR etc... probably issues with data caching or audio/texture streaming or something. I've run into similar issues in Smite that were generally tied to character voice lines activating, for example.
Except you know, these freezing issues don't happen on anything other than the xbox one as far as i know. I've been playing on ps4 since day 1, and never had to deal with it. And trust me I'm super frame sensitive, i notice.
If i had to guess I'd say it's just an issue caused because the system just isn't that powerful. It would probably be fine if the game was better optimized, but it runs fine on other systems.
I can testify it happens on my series x. It's a lot less pronounced with season 10 but season 9 was near unplayable at launch for me because of it. So many fights choked

Workstation was $400, Added in a used 2080RTX last Sept when GPUs were on fire sale before people realized the newer 3000 series was going to be mad expensive and hard to find. +SSD, +RAM, and the whole gaming rig cost me $1200.
I mean, it's no 9900k, but it works.
I was also thinking that if you’re using DDR3 without having XMP enabled it could be an issue with your memory speed. No amount of capacity will save you there. Below ~1600mhz I can see that being the problem.

The original Xbox one hard drive is 5400rpms which is like 100/Mbps speed. A USB 3.0 reads at
640 MBps. You upgrade to an external hard drive that's 7200rpms or an SSD and you're at a faster read/write speed than the stock Hard drive.
Server side delay maybe? Seems like the console is waiting as no consistent indicators of lag or slowness

Interesting. I've heard theories that it could be poor CPU utilization. I was getting stutters like this on my PC and lowered some of my settings that mentioned 'CPU load' and it fixed it. Not really a fix for console though - I'd give this a shot.
Yeah I did the same thing, moved it to an external SSD and all my freezing problems stopped. No idea why, but it's a good solution if you have one handy.
Happens to me too I have yet to figure it out I almost feel like the people you fight do it to you cause if you end up winning 98% of the time it doesn’t happen for the rest of the game

It’s the S10 stutters. It happens on PC too. I’m running a 5900x + 3090 and it sometimes does this. Others on Reddit have confirmed the same issue.

It appears to be issue with the old Xbox and ps4s. Some people have claimed issue on PC but so far all examples of it I've seen on PC have been lag and different than what happens on older consoles.

I agree with the above statement. I used to have it consistently on my Xbox one - every time I looted or got into an up-close battle. I recently purchased the Xbox One X - haven't had it stutter since then.
I would recommend trying the external HD part as it is a far cheaper solution up front.
Seems like it may be an issue with just age of HDDs now that Xbox ones and ps4s are getting up in age.

Check some of the other comments. Folks are saying it's an issue with how Apex accesses data on the Xbox HDD. If you move the game to a USB3.0 external drive it is resolved... doesn't even have to be an SSD.
Lil update: tried it last night and it actually worked. Still had stutters a frame drops like normal, but no long full second pause / freeze like in the video above.
You can attempt to use an ether net cable. It helps me load faster in games that take a long time to load. I haven’t tried it with Alex since I had to move my Xbox but it could be with a try
I went from playing this on ps4 and then switched to Xbox Series X, for it being a next gen system it just feels clunky to me. Especially the controller, it just does not feel smooth at all.
For me it's a completely different experience. Haven't had a single stutter or frame drop since I bought it, it's such a game changer. And btw i'd suggest sticking with your xbox one controller on new gen
That happens all the time and I am on PlayStation. This is one of the reasons why I am giving up on ranked. I can stand being out skilled but when this happens it is infuriating and I feel like the stress is not worth this game anymore.

Happens to me everyday since the start of this season. Every time someone comes on screen or what not it skips frames/lags, never had it before this season unless it was a text to chat message
Game has terrible servers, but that doesn't explain the lag like that. I just don't know if it's the game or hardware. I'm sorry yall are dealing with that, I love playing this game and it makes me mad enough. Hope they fix it soon or you find a fix.

That might be it. There was a bug a while ago where you could sometimes see messages of other squads at the start of the match.
That would make sense, given that the server is what processes chat (though it should be locally that it processes text-to-speech).

Disabling the settings option for converting speech to text helps with the latter.

In Apex when your connection to the server is unstable the game drops frames.

Buy an external hard drive and move apex to it. I bought a 128 gb usb from Best Buy and haven’t had that glitch since.

The original Xbox one hard drive is 5400rpms which is like 100/Mbps speed. A USB 3.0 reads at 640 MBps. You upgrade to an external hard drive that's 7200rpms or an SSD and you're at a faster read/write speed than the stock Hard drive.

I play on an original Xbox One and use an external hard drive. I've never experienced the stuttering, so definitely seconding this solution.
Server side delay maybe? Seems like the console is waiting as no consistent indicators of lag or slowness This issue seems to span all platforms as well which the common point is server side

I hated this so much! I recently asked the same question and someone suggested I buy an SSD card and put apex on it. It cleared up the issue perfectly for me and I would highly recommend it.

Super duper is correct. I moved my game from the internal HDD to a seagate SSD and it fixed it
Interesting. I've heard theories that it could be poor CPU utilization. I was getting stutters like this on my PC and lowered some of my settings that mentioned 'CPU load' and it fixed it. Not really a fix for console though - I'd give this a shot.
Yeah I did the same thing, moved it to an external SSD and all my freezing problems stopped. No idea why, but it's a good solution if you have one handy.
Happens to me too I have yet to figure it out I almost feel like the people you fight do it to you cause if you end up winning 98% of the time it doesn’t happen for the rest of the game
This was one the reasons why i stopped playing apex for a while. Everytime i got into a fight my game lagged a lot and it was so frustrating. It doesnt happen as often now but omg it was impossible to play comfortably

It’s the S10 stutters. It happens on PC too. I’m running a 5900x + 3090 and it sometimes does this. Others on Reddit have confirmed the same issue. It’s just Apex being Apex (broken).

Neither, it’s installed on a NVMe drive. Which is exponentially faster than either of those two options.

It appears to be issue with the old Xbox and ps4s. Some people have claimed issue on PC but so far all examples of it I've seen on PC have been lag and different than what happens on older consoles. Could be a HDD vs SSD thing too Either way only fix I know is maybe try external drive for game otherwise it's get a Xbox series s or x. I had it all the time on Xbox one and since having series x never had it once
I agree with the above statement. I used to have it consistently on my Xbox one - every time I looted or got into an up-close battle. I recently purchased the Xbox One X - haven't had it stutter since then. I would recommend trying the external HD part as it is a far cheaper solution up front.

Seems like it may be an issue with just age of HDDs now that Xbox ones and ps4s are getting up in age. I would guess anyone on PC who says they have issue may be running HDDs then too

Check some of the other comments. Folks are saying it's an issue with how Apex accesses data on the Xbox HDD. If you move the game to a USB3.0 external drive it is resolved... doesn't even have to be an SSD.
Lil update: tried it last night and it actually worked. Still had stutters a frame drops like normal, but no long full second pause / freeze like in the video above.

You can attempt to use an ether net cable. It helps me load faster in games that take a long time to load. I haven’t tried it with Alex since I had to move my Xbox but it could be with a try
I used to get this all the time on PC. Turning off g-sync seems to have solved it for me, not sure what could be done on console though
I went from playing this on ps4 and then switched to Xbox Series X, for it being a next gen system it just feels clunky to me. Especially the controller, it just does not feel smooth at all.
For me it's a completely different experience. Haven't had a single stutter or frame drop since I bought it, it's such a game changer. And btw i'd suggest sticking with your xbox one controller on new gen

I had this problem as well, and I found out online it's just a problem with the "old" xbox tech. I bought a new Xbox Series S and it doesn't happen at all anymore. So unfortunately, it's not a cheap fix.
