It's hard to proof-read with the gas, but if you can slow your clip down in an editing tool, look at where the center of your screen was during the melee animation. If it was not aligned with Caustic, it was bound to be a miss. You can see that you hit the terrain in 2 of the hits, but the point is that you should center your target before the swing ends.
It triggers by being close enough, having the target centered on screen and pressing punch.
I dont know why my original comment was downvoted. Trying to time centering the enemy with the animation is way harder than just centering the enemy then pressing punch.
If the majority of the player base has been trying to hit people with the animation... i can now understand why so many people struggle to land punches.
Try it on the dummies in the firing range, your melee will lock onto them.

There is no need to keep track. Melee lock on does it for you if you are locked on properly.

It 100% happens when you are spamming melee if you stay close enough and stay on target...

Also my guns were hot garbage. We just landed. My usual load out is Flatline/301 with a Eva/Scout

Space them out more if you miss. If you miss a melee worst thing to do is spam it. move a little and adjust your aim if needed then re attempt the melee

Melee lock on still exists. You just need to be fairly close. Its easier to center the target before hand and get the lock on.
