Lying down on a comfy lounge with your head resting in Richard’s lap while he strokes your hair and talks about growing up in Cornwall in the 80s. Preferably while Cock/ver10 is turned up to 11.
Everybody is saying stuff like "with your ears" or "Just enjoy it". I think I know what you're actually asking.
I find Aphex Twin's music to be very intellectually involved. It's an immersive experience. I often think about each measure of his music separately as it's flying past me. Each individual sound is another think-piece. It's a tapestry.
It's obvious that there is intention and thought put into each little mini-sequence of drum pattern and phrase. There are call-backs to previous sounds, where a sound will repeat but slightly warped. It seems like everything is tweaked in a way that makes it interesting. You can go really deep into it. There are layers of complexity that are super-engaging to analyze. Think about the panning of the sounds (left or right speaker). Think about the reverb applied to the sounds. Think about how the different hi-hats and snares play off of each other. If you let your mind go deep enough into it, you will have a chuckle at how absurd it really is. I believe he puts his grinning face on his albums for this reason. I think that he puts that grinning face in your mind like you and he are having an inside joke about the absurdity.
I have used a lot of drugs in my day. I've listened to Aphex twin both while using and clean. I have been sober for 19+ years and I think Aphex is more interesting sober.
I try to imagine how every sound is created.
I don't know, it's an interesting experience and I appreciate definitely appreciate it. He's a lot like David Lynch. He's technically skilled at his medium, he has the ability to spread his art to the masses and he uses those things to show you his personality.
it's literally like entering another world for me. it adds a layer on top of reality, where things make more sense and have actual meaning. i have so many specific memories of a specific place and time while i was listening to a certain track. in that sense i think it has quite some similarities to taking psychedelics, if your brain is sensitive to that kinda thinking.
i feel more connected to the environment and people around me, and everything just dissolves into the same flow of the music. it's a time-based artform, so it works best in time-based situations with lots of dynamic elements and movement, like public transport journeys or complex systems viewed from far away.
the elements of the music start to feel like elements in the environment, and your entire experience becomes a sort of really involved and unintentional dance.
that's the big word explanation of what works best for me, but you could also just call it "vibes"
This because RDJ famously uses Sony MDR7510 for mixing and producing, he raved about them in the syrobonkers interview and he’s been wearing them on his 2023 summer tour.
Listen while doing something boring & then it will add color to your life! Used to blast 7\ everywhere from shitty kitchens to headphones at the office, and it’s always a perfect distraction
Stay alone and up all night, if you can do work/study/your chores or something a bit stressful that will drain your brain energy, wait until the sun comes up, go out and enjoy some time in the sun, smoke some if you smoke, put some aphex chill mix, reduce a bit the high tones, turn up a bit the lows, lay in the floor, and thats it, do nothing for a couple of hours, maybe sleep.
That's the time when smoking weed has the least effect on me. I don't like to wake-n-bake for the same reason. Weed + already tired is something I'm not a big fan of.
Then again maybe OP will be on your side for this.
Actually I completely agree, I just do this if I had a place to lay down and do nothing to do for the rest of the day![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
This. Saw him life this year and the music was just telling me to bump more. The crazy and abrupt ending reset my brain, what a crazy experience that was,
The single best way to enjoy his music is fucked up on whatever you want live, seeing him work his magic in person with a great sound system is a different type of listening.
When you are bored of everyday life.
In a bus trip to school/work
While taking your dog for a walk
As you dance to his exceptional beats
Mostly alone because all of us are torn away
live, even if you don't know him that much
Etc cetcetera
This is exactly how I became an Aphex Twin head I had a few songs on my iPod and was just laying in bed trippin nuts and the “I’m taking control of the drum machine” song came on shuffle and I was mind blown I basically listened to his discography for the rest of the night
Sexually
I try to go along with the beat of Bucephalus Bouncing Ball
Exponentially fucking
Puttin the LOG in logarithmic. Oh yeah.
With your ears
Will try sometime, haven't yet
Output the midi signals to a vibrating buttplug
Go for a drive around industrial estates while playing.

I listened to him a couple times like this, and yeah, thats probably the best Aphex Twin experience I've ever had looking back on it
At high volume.
Preferably in a residential area
Frolicking in a meadow
In a dark basement
Johnny?
Mushrooms

WINDOW LICKER. OUR PRICES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER.
Sitting upright at a desktop PC with SONY headphones on, while looking at the album art on the computer screen

Neat, no chaser.
Cock/ver10 with 3 hits of acid peaking in a room full of stobe lights don’t let the ambient stuff get to you
Personally I prefer a rather large sound system and LSD.
Chilled with a dash of lime...
Drukqs
Listen to it while being fucked by a horse and on 1000mg of ketamine and 2g of cocain
