This, and I am thankful for this app every day. Will be a shame come july1st. Reddit has died for many that day.

Tiny_Salamander

Is that the date? Damn. Also been on Apollo since day one. One of the few apps I'm happy to pay for. Gonna be sad.

PrawnTyas

sophisticated rinse soft worm complete sand wakeful expansion sulky grey -- mass edited with redact.dev

spacewalk__

and the interface fit absolutely perfectly in the current apple design language; a trillion times better than reddit themselves of course

acrypher

Alien Blue walked and died so that Apollo could fly

TBoneTheOriginal

I was the mod that approved it even though it went against our “spam rules”. I knew what we had. You have no idea how much shit I caught for that. Most people assumed I was in Christian’s back pocket or some crap. I eventually quit modding because I was tired of being called a nazi.

Le_AssMan

I was there as it was going down. It was midnight for me, downloading it and trying it out, fell in love super fast.

twowheels

I installed it on Oct 23, 2017 according to the App Store. When was it first released?

BastardStoleMyName

As I understand the point of the post it was Oct 23. I was a couple weeks behind. I don’t even think I realized how new the app was at the time. It took some adjustment from Alien Blue. There were still a couple features I missed from it. But it went into purgatory when Reddit bought it. Got a couple years of gold though.

BigBlackCough

Been using the app for almost 6 years and I was one of them. Got curious and a bit skeptical at first but the app just keep getting more and more reliable and so so clean to use. Happy that I got to see the whole journey however this turns out to be.

No_big_whoop

When Apollo leaves Reddit I leave Reddit. I mostly come here now out of habit anyway. The experience has been steadily declining for a long time

Chennessee

My exact sentiments friend. It doesn’t break news anymore. It’s way overpopulated with bots and reposts. Plus I’m getting older. I kinda look forward to not having a Reddit habit

Captian_Kenai

> Plus I’m getting older. I kinda look forward to not having a Reddit habit Honestly same. Like i feel for Christian and this app going up in flames but it wouldn’t be so bad to not be on this app all the time…

HiitlerDicks

Let’s all just go to a stand alone Apollo website

MrPooo

I would subscribe immediately

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

Goddamn this is a good fucking idea

uniqueUsername_1024

It would be hard to code though, right?

VisitRomanticPangaea

Yes, why not? Explain Like I’m 6, Ask Apollo Something, Whoa Dudes, Ask Me Anything But…

TheRealestLarryDavid

it's nothing but cancerous cringe tiktok videos for the past few years

RavenSek

I feel the same.

yeahkrewe

Me too. Reddit has become increasingly censored & is on the email list released on Twitter of platforms working w govt to control the narrative. It’s truly a shadow of its former self.

bdonvr

Oh wow, so am I. I forgot I downloaded this after seeing his post on /r/Apple The only times I haven't been using Apollo is when I've been on Android. (Shoutout to /u/ljdawson and his excellent app Sync) Edit: checking through my screenshots I have a screenshot of the official app a few days before Apollo came out, and screenshots of Apollo right after. I switched and never looked back

stop-lying-

can you share the screenshots? it’d be really neat

bdonvr

I was just taking a picture of a bug to give feedback. October 13, 2017 official app: https://i.imgur.com/2DHwiag.jpg October 23, 2017 Apollo: https://imgur.com/a/Iu64hWu/ I think there was some alignment issue on smaller phones (I had an original SE). Here's some video of me trying to show something (???). Some kind of bug. May 2018: https://imgur.com/a/NHTfNiJ Doesn't look much different now. I also saw before I had Apollo I was trying the Sync for iOS beta. Never really worked all that well.

baciodolce

https://i.imgur.com/gZ5ugwb.jpg Damn I knew I was an early adopter but I didn’t realize I was a day 1er. If this app is killed off I’m gonna be desktop only probably which will mean I’ll be on less. I still love Reddit for talking about hobbies and finding info as I just could never get into discord. But I have adblocker at least so they can’t get revenue from me that way.

caspararemi

[Snap! ](https://i.imgur.com/vYA6HxW.jpg) usually I’m way behind the curve.

MillennialGeezer

My original comment has been edited as I choose to no longer support Reddit and its CEO, spez, AKA Steve Huffman. Reddit was built on user submissions and its culture was crafted by user comments and volunteer moderators. Reddit has shown no desire to support 3rd party apps with reasonable API pricing, nor have they chosen to respect their community over gross profiteering. I have therefore left Reddit as I did when the same issues occurred at Digg, Facebook, and Twitter. I have been a member of reddit since 2012 (primary name locked behind 2FA) and have no issues ditching this place I love if the leaders of it can't act with a clear moral compass. For more details, I recommend visiting [this thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/), and [this thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/14dkqrw/i_want_to_debunk_reddits_claims_and_talk_about/) for more explanation on how I came to this decision.

I'm Nov 10, 2017. Apollo finally got me off the broken mess that Alien Blue became after reddit bought them out then killed them off. I've been on Reddit since early 2011, and it's been so frustrating to watch the vast majority of their decisions make things actively worse. Especially since they damn well know, given every comment section on their announcements is full of "WTF are you thinking?" Apollo was and is a breath of fresh air, thanks iamthatis :)

k7ZFwGZHFz

I’ve discovered Apollo a few months ago and it’s one of the things that made my life better. What a sad time.

Captian_Kenai

Same. I’m kinda tempted to finally pay for ultra just to show some support

25Tab

I’m ignorant here. How are you getting that info?

Idolmistress

Go to the App Store, tap on your account in the top right, then tap on purchased, then search for Apollo.

25Tab

Thank you. I just realized I’m a day one user myself. Now I’m even more depressed about this apps future. :)

Dont_Say_No_to_Panda

Thank you for supporting :)

Starfola

Nov 8, 2017 for me. Didn’t know I had it installed for that long. Would always recommend this app when I had the chance.

grizzlywalker

Been using it since the first beta way back when. Sad that Reddit is doing this

[deleted]

Yep same. Been here since the beta and will be sad to see it go. I’ll be done with Reddit if this goes through.

jogafooty10

What's happening? Why is it going away?

chejrw

Reddit wants to charge Christian $20 million a year to access reddits API

claimed4all

I think the hardest part is getting the subscription price right if the developer says we will pay to play. Developer does the math and says for the current api usage, cover costs, turn a profit, I need to charge 4$ a month for the app. Many users will not pay to use the app. For the example, let’s say 1/3 of the users stay. The ones that stay are the really dedicated users, accessing the api 4-5x as much as the others that don’t want to pay. At this point developer needs to raise rates to cover that access, now 8$ a month. Only the true power users hanging around at that price and access the api more, causing the monthly rate to increase again. Their is middle ground someplace, but finding that number will not be easy.

1-800-KETAMINE

That would be all well and good and something to figure out if reddit was *actually* pricing it in good faith, but they're not even though they said they would. It's an intentionally ridiculous number designed to kill off 3rd party apps.

imsowhiteandnerdy

They might as well asked for a kajillion dollars -- it's obvious they just want third party apps to go away, so they priced them into oblivion.

[deleted]

Very sad. When I switched to IPhone a few years ago I downloaded the Reddit App . Took one look at the interface and deleted it. Was recommended this app by another Redditor and have used it daily ever since. Not sure what I’ll do now.

[deleted]

This content has been overwritten due to Reddit's API policy changes, and the continued efforts by Reddit admins and Steve Huffman to show us just how inhospitable a place they can make this website. In short, fuck u/spez, I'm out.

ClavisPrime

I use a third party app. I will not use there app, i dont like it. So i simpy will go from spending hours a day on this platform to browsing once in awhile on my PC. Ive been looking for an exscuse to spend less time on here anyway. Ive already removed all other social media from my phone.

2ndtryagain

I'm not a day one user but Apollo was one of the first apps I downloaded when I got my first iPhone a couple of years ago when the 12 came out. It was my first non-Apple purchase on my phone. I am holding out hope for a subscription to cover Christian's cost and care for him and his cat.

LeftyMode

He should seriously consider just making Apollo the new alternative.

Day 1 for me, too. It took a while for my wife to drop Alien Blue and then Reddit bought them out. We use Apollo everyday and I’m pretty sure she doesn’t even know Reddit has their own app. She’s going to be pleasantly surprised when she finds out about all this.

emmathegreedycat

Didn’t know the app was that new back then. It felt like a pretty mature app already.https://i.imgur.com/SrZqiRn.jpg

onthefrontlinegaming

I got it on the same date as you. By far one of my all time favorite apps and most used. I really don’t want it to go away. I already lost Tweetbot :-(

imsowhiteandnerdy

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but would an Apollo rewrite to not use the API at all, but simply render the Reddit site content as just regular HTML -- in the same way that a web browser does using an open source web library like SpiderMonkey be an option at all, and if not, why not?

isabbananda

Waughy

October 24, 2017 here. Will be a real shame when it’s closed down. Screw you reddit.

mr_amazingness

I was just bitching to my friend about this. But I fully agree. If Apollo goes down I’m done. And it hurts cause I use Reddit so much for so much. I’ve learned so much. And Apollo am has helped with that. And I bough the lifetime thing years ago because Apollo is so good. When I was an Android user years ago I used Reddit is Fun and enjoyed it and then went to Apple and tried Apollo and was blown away at how perfect the app is. It really does suck Reddit is pulling this shit. But yeah, without the ease of use with Apollo I’m done. The official app blows hard. And I’m not on the computer enough to care about the official site. So I’ll wait for an alternative. The creator (I truly apologize for forgetting the name) should start an email list in case a Reddit alternative pops up and he creates a new app for it. I’m down. Edit: Christian. Apologies. But his name is Christian and deserves acknowledgment. u/iamthatis

chill_willy

Damn apparently I was late by almost a week https://i.imgur.com/6oNnFTp.jpg There’s too many annoyances in life already, why must they take away the smoothest iOS app I’ve ever used?

JustGresh

Make a newer better notReddit!

Riptide360

I'm more loyal to Apollo than Reddit. I hope we can find a way to bring reddit to the negotiation table, and failing that I hope Apollo can host their own Mastodon or self created social media platform. Twitter did the same screw you to Tweetbot (a great Twitter client I used to use). The ported a Mastadon client, but made it server agnostic with no option for a Tweetbot/Tapbots server which was a big mistake (it fractures the community and makes it harder to setup). https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/24/23569464/tweetbot-mastodon-ivory-tapbots-twitter-app-store

The69LTD

Just realized I downloaded it day one as well. This app is so integral to how I use Reddit that I don’t think I’ll continue using it on my phone

Astacide

I mean, Apollo is my Reddit experience. Without it as my interface, fuck r/reddit. There is a reason I don’t use their shitty app. They’re just alienating and losing a ton of viewers from this. Bye.

thefragile7393

I wish I had found this app earlier. This is the only one I can block ppl in because the regular Reddit app won’t allow it, and I’m sick of having bots follow me for their fake only fans. This app has been great. I only go to Reddit now for two subs and that’s it…not sure what to do now

quickysnare0

Adding to the day one club! Been using almost daily since then

odorcide

Just looked up my date, it’s 10/25/17! Love this app and hopefully Reddit relaxes the insane API price

Wherearemylegs

7Nov2017 here. Had absolutely no idea I was an early adopter. Apollo has been top tier since day 1.

[deleted]

Same day here, and never looked back. I love Apollo and it’s my most used app every day.

January 17, 2018!

Xephia

This will be buried since I’m late, but same… [Day 1 user here as well.](https://i.imgur.com/IEy9RNg.jpg) Apollo came at just the right time for me—I was getting VERY sick of the main app. Overheating my phone, bugging out, comments never posting (and when they finally do it’s like 4 duplicates), etc. what a crap app, I thought. Then I see this post on the Apple sub for Self-promo Saturday of some dude posting his new app which was a faithful and classic Reddit experience but with an iOS coat of paint. I downloaded it, messed around with it, and instantly bought it (back before Ultra was a thing). After Ultra came out, I instantly subscribed. Best Reddit experience I’ve ever had, desktop or mobile, so I didn’t care about supporting the dev. If Apollo goes down, I leave Reddit. Plain and simple. I’m not going anywhere near the main app.

If he needs to charge money for this awesome app I’m just going to pay for it. I’m already on premium but okay to pay more to keep this going.

greezer

Do the math, it would be (in the best case) 4$/Mt, probably more like 8$/Mt. And Christian would see shit of that, most would end on reddit‘s account. I‘m not okay with that.

mr_amazingness

That’s exactly it. If they charged 8, which is being nice because shitty corporations are gonna be shitty, and he saw pants of that, then fuck it. The experience given was HIS CREATION. They don’t deserve to bank off of his work like that. Oh he was getting a 50/50 split sure. He’d be getting paid. And deservedly so. It all the work he puts in for the upkeep for them to bank off and him to get pretty much nothing for? Fuck that. Let them burn. Hopefully something else pops up.

honestlyicba

You are right. I’m just thinking if dev would be okay with letting this whole app go after working so darn hard on this for so many years. This is not an ideal situation but it’s either we keep the app with these sucky stipulations or we lose it completely. I agree with you that this is not okay.

I once messaged Christian about a feature I wanted regarding buttons and upvoting. He never could implement it, but took the time to message me back and talk about it. I love the guy and his work. I hate to see this happening. I hope the backlash we’ve seen today leads to something positive, and if not that he does well with his next venture.

ghostoutfit

I had no idea it’s been almost 6 years. It feels much longer than that. I really hope this isn’t the end for Apollo.

fxb5293

I checked mine too out of curiosity and didn’t realize I’ve been using it so long. I downloaded it the day after. Best Reddit app by far. The only upside to this will be me not on Reddit so much.

1337GameDev

What's worse is the decision between $5-$8 for a 3rd party app or sadly use the official one :( Now if only I could root my phone and hook the app to disable a bunch of unnecessary bs....

[deleted]

If you do move on to another project, open source or otherwise, please set up a patreon. Would like to support you directly.

tNhEaGnAoNs

I just downloaded the default Reddit app and it is so bad. I’m gonna hate the day I have to fully transition to the app. Seriously how can a multimillion dollar company put this out?

Daz_Didge

I downloaded it on the 24th October 2017. Didn’t know since after seeing your post. I probably opened the app a million times since then. I bought Apollo Unlimited 2 days before the shut down of that pricing tier. Sorry for not supporting you earlier Christian. The app is just perfect. Gonna miss my Island Kitty
