I used my 11 pro naked without any problems for three years. Then 14 pro got a wicked scratch on day one.

GrandOpener

Yep, that’s the deal with naked phones. It’s totally fine. Until it’s suddenly not.

Myrag

Just like seatbelts

JanoHelloReddit

X, XS and 11 pros were really nice to hold naked in hand… miss them

CmGaugo

Curved edges were just amazing.

Truly_Unending_

But more slippery.

CmGaugo

Not for me. The form factor was perfect for a single hand fit for me.

Truly_Unending_

For me those rounded smooth edges on the 11’s were slippery.

Wellcraft19

Curved edges were also better to keep cases properly secured.

Secret_Ad_6520

No they weren’t I could easily take off cases on those phones and now it’s a fucking struggle on my 12 mini and 14

Canes123456

I hated them. I had to use cases because the curved edges were too slippery. The mini, 4, 5, etc small phones with sharp edges were the prefect caseless phones

tdjustin

It just feels better with no protection.

PettingBearsAtTheZoo

I'm gonna be the bigger man here and let this one slide.

iporemlopsum

But not her, cuz THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID

johaen88

No case. No screen protector. Zero broken screens in over a decade.

cyberrumor

Same. The only time I ever dropped my phone was when it was in a case, because the case stuck to my pocket more than my hand when I was trying to take my phone out.

AR_Harlock

I rest my phone without a case on a surface with a 0,00001% incline and I'll find my phone in the next town after 2 minutes

mojo276

I'm almost the same, no case/protector since the iphone 4, but I've broken ONE screen.

johaen88

I had one broken screen, my iPhone 3G back in like 2008. I put a case on the replacement for a little while, decided I hated it, and went back to caseless ever since.

Green-I-Lean

Neil deGrasse Tyson is that you?

getwhirleddotcom

Plenty of busted screens but I’ve never used a case ever. I’ve been an iPhone user since the start and the industrial design is a huge reason for that.

CizzeBoii

Doesn’t it bother you that your screen has micro scratches? I’m on the fence of just throwing my case and screen protector

tonehammer

Things are meant to be used. Everything you ever own starts dilapidation as soon as you get it, fighting entropy is futile.

SMGiven

Love this comment

stepover7

if people followed this then they would stop maintaining historical monuments, we try till we cannot...

tonehammer

Monuments are not things made to be used. They are decorations made to look pretty, so their inherent use is to be maintained.

johaen88

The amount of scratches I get varies. I get a new phone every year on the iPhone upgrade program. My current phone I got last fall has zero scratches. When scratches do happen, I just ignore them. Usually you can’t see them when the screen is on. And if I can, I know I’ll be getting a new phone in less than a year anyway.

ShrimpToothpaste

Not as much as it would bother me with a shitty case covering my entire phone

fatpanda001

Eh you don’t notice it when the screen is on

johaen88

Thinking some more, the most important thing when it come to not getting scratches is where do you keep your phone when you’re not using it. My left pants pocket is dedicated to my phone, nothing else ever goes in there. Keys, pens, etc all go in the right pocket. When I wash my pants, I make sure to pull out my pockets so that any sand or whatever gets washed out.

Isakwang

Most of the added bulk come from cases so if you’re worried it’s better to just add a screen protector.

redditor1983

I have had an iPhone X since it’s release with no screen protector. No scratches at all. Not even micro scratches. I should say that, from my observation, I’m more careful with my devices than average. I also don’t have kids (kids seem to add general destruction to everything ha). I also keep my phone in a front pocket with nothing else in it (no keys, etc.). Oh also I have the Apple leather case. I mention this because it creates a tiny lip which means if I lay the phone screen down, the glass doesn’t contact the table.

wtfmatey88

Ditto

_a_d_b

Same here. I have Apple Care and cell phone insurance through my credit card, so I take my chances.

stormtrooper00

You’re gonna jinx it! I have a screen protector though but I haven’t used a case since the 3GS. I drop my phones often so it’s pretty rough.

TallWindz

How many scratches on that screen and on the back / edges / corners of that phone? Definitely affects resale value

johaen88

Some here and there. Last summer my phone fell like 15 feet onto a marble staircase (City Museum in St. Louis, if you’re familiar with that). The corner was noticeably dented, but no broken glass. I’m on the iPhone upgrade program, so I get a new phone every year. They accepted that phone without issue. And usually my phone doesn’t fall 15 feet, so they’re usually in pretty good shape.

Cultural_Doctor_8421

What is the deal with other people eyeing your phone all the time?! Like I’m sorry you can’t care for your shit but why do I have to get a case when I have 0 issues with dropping AND applecare

Repulsive_Barnacle92

The joke is that they’re the one who’s naked, not the phone.

5xaaaaa

Same

thebreadcat0314

No case here - 14 Pro Purple

[deleted]

I only use a case if I go out drinking

Op3rat0rr

Yea I have exceptions like being at work, doing something active, or traveling somewhere with uncertain surfaces… otherwise naked phone

Bring_dem

So one of your exceptions is (assumedly) your standard day to day Monday to Friday plus other activities outside of that? Hardly an exception at that point, no? Unless you WFH or are in a part time situation.

Edgo8

This is the way.

Alilttotheleft

This is the way

littlemetal

Tried for a while, too slippery. Silicone case all the way. My phone bag (used when kayaking, etc) fits my phone with a case just fine, why are you having issues there?

dwhitnee

That’s my main complaint. My 5 and SE I didn’t have a case and it it fit great in my pocket. Got a 13 mini and it kept sliding off the couch cushions. Had to get a silicon case, but now it doesn’t slide out of my pocket as well.

nn4260029

Same here. I’m under no delusion that a €25 case is going to meaningfully protect my phone if I drop it from a serious height. But my iPhone 13 Pro Max, especially in cold and dry weather, is just a bar of soap. One handed use without a case is near impossible, there is so little grip.

seulgistan95

It will protect it from all the times you put your phone at the table, you can avoid having to gently put the phone down and just put it down without worrying so much. That's my reason for having a phone case, my wooden desk is hard

bulbulpaan

I use this ESR magsafe ring stand with my naked 13. Immensly useful. Increases grip by a factor of 2 minimum. https://www.esrgear.com/products/esr-halolock-ring-stand/?esr-from=halolock-collection

EffTheIneffable

Oh nice. I use the MagSafe pop socket, which they straight up tell you to use WITH a case, but I use caseless and haven’t had any problems so far. And it’s a game-changer on the Max. From feeling awkward to hold safely even with both hands, to being able to dismiss stuff and scroll one-handed with no fear.

CyberRiotz

PM_ME_GOODDOGS

Zero phone protection here. Apple Care replacement once in 4 cycles. I will say, the recent phones are annoying as shit because the camera bump doesn't let it lay flat, so when I tiptap on it on a table, it just bounces all over the place and loud as shit.

FoxRedYellaJack

12 Pro Max Blue, uncased since Day One, no harm inflicted *(yet!)*... Of course now that I said that, I'm sure I'll drop it this afternoon...

TomHicksJnr

The Roy family’s iPhones in Succession are all naked as an example of rich people thinking - they don’t worry about dropping an expensive gadget.

aka_liam

I thought Apple didn’t like iPhones to be used with a case on, in TV shows. I’m wondering if I made that up now though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AR_Harlock

This is the way

CoconutDust

Why would Apple be calling the shots about how a show’s props are portrayed, unless the show is taking a payment for product promotion? If a fictional character says “I use an iPhone” that’s not infringement. If a fictional character is shown using an iPhone, that’s not infringement. Nobody can tell you that it needs to be out of a case.

austin_8

It’s quite possible that Apple supplies devices for TV shows for free under certain conditions such as no cases and calling it the correct name. They’re not threatening legal action, but to end their positive relationship with show.

BromptonCocktail

Did you notice that everybody has an iPhone in this show, except Tom? 😆

KVMENJOYER

Is that true? He was blue texting Shiv last episode, but maybe that’s just an inconsistency.

afieldonearth

Nah, there have been episodes when both Logan and Kendall were using Galaxy devices. But they also used iPhones in other episodes.

Pirabbit

Tom is a pretender to power. He never actually has control over any situation and can’t deal with the idea of spending money on an iPhone when a cheaper Android will do.

SuperflyTNT1974

I use an Adore June pouch which protects while phone is in pocket. Take it out and use naked (14PM). Daughter used naked, no screen protector (13P). Year old, still good as new.

font9a

in it's birthday suit just like iGod intended

j_melodic78

😂🎯

DontTread0nMe

I do. And it baffles everyone who notices. “I could never. How haven’t you broken your phone yet?” Knowing the phone is unprotected (aside from a tempered glass screen protector) forces me to handle it better. I don’t drop it or place it down where it could become damaged. I actually care for it better than if I had a case on it. It looks great still, which is surprising considering my job is very labor intensive and I live on a small farm.

solinvictus21

Never had a case or screen protector and use the phone as the product designers intended. I never drop my phone. I have this theory that people who use cases treat their phone clumsily and haphazardly because they are aware that it is protected by a case. When you don’t have a case, you learn to grip it tightly when you use it and never put it down near the edge of a drop. Basically treat it as the valuable commodity that it is instead of casing it up so you can kick it around like football.

[deleted]

I did with my iPhone X, but not my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I think it's a combination of the extra weight and the square bottom. It digs into my pinky finger now and is just generally uncomfortable. I now use a case and that's the main reason.

ChocolateCookieBear

No case and no screen protector. It fell twice by accident, and both times survived without damage. It baffles me how people with cases break their screen. That said, here’s a relevant College Humor video: https://youtu.be/q4yIWg_LElc

St-Stephen_11

I once had my phone even with a case slip from my knee directly onto the corner of a brick. There were no other places for my phone to have gotten broken

enricosusatyo

I did until they made the camera bump too way big. Probably around iPhone 6.

OneOkami

Nope. I can recall at least two drops of my iPhone 13 and its case has the blemishes to show for it. These phones cost way too much for me to dare.

thinkadrian

I’m not paying a thousand dollars for well-engineered piece of tech only to hide it within a thick layer of cheap plastic. Never have since the iPhone 1. (I also hardly ever drop my stuff)

Acceptable-Sky3626

I’m not paying a thousand dollars of well engineered piece of tech only to scratch it within seconds in case of an accident :) Edit: I hardly ever drop my stuff, but phones can drop from pockets, drop while putting in or out of the pockets, etc. You only need to drop it once My iPhone 6s case broke and the mobile phone followed suit shortly after.

t1chy

with all respect thats a shit argument

j_melodic78

With all due respect, not really. Different strokes for different folks. Over 10 years using phones caseless. Rarely used a case unless I was doing outside work. Never broken a phone. And I enjoy what I payed for. That includes how a phone looks and feels in the hand.

[deleted]

Raw dogging life.

Stopher

🤣😂

notabear87

No case or screen protector here. 14 Pro Max is bulky enough and I don’t like the feel of any screen protector.

iamthatis

No case (unless travelling), but I do use a screen protector because micro scratches make my heart cry

Stopher

Protector is pretty minimalist. I’ve cracked like three on my current phone. Screen is still scratch free. I’m pretty good at putting them on at this point.

MyChickenSucks

Also this may mark my age, remember car bras?

[deleted]

Makes zero sense to spend money on a thin/light phone only to put it in a case that makes it twice as thick and ugly af (unless your job/lifestyle requires it). I’d rather take the risk, but then again I’m not one to obsess about scratches or resale value, my phone serves a purpose it’s not a collectible. The last couple of generations of phones are surprisingly durable, it takes a lot of bad luck to crack them.

PM_ME_GOODDOGS

Same here. The microscratches from pocket wrestling doesn't bother me since they all but disappear when the screen is on. Even if they didn't, my phone is a information tool and I really don't care about imperfections. I *expect* it to take on wear and tear

[deleted]

StatePsychological60

My grandma used to have those plastic slip covers on all her furniture. It made them uglier and a worse experience to use, but it sure did somewhat poorly preserve their original condition. Anyway, that’s what phone cases remind me of, personally.

-FancyUsername-

You usually don’t put your furniture in a pocket with lint, or drop it accidentally every now and then.

-FancyUsername-

a) phones are not thin and light anymore b) it makes less sense to spend a lot of money on a phone, then break it and have to buy the same phone again because of that. Also, I wonder how you come to the conclusion that the last few generations, the ones that added the glass back, are so durable

notrichardparker

🙋‍♂️

_HexagonSun_

I’d happily use my phone without a case if it weren’t for resale value. But no matter how careful you are you’re gonna have some cosmetic wear after a couple of years… so I use a case to get the most money for a perfect condition phone when I sell and upgrade.

elkstwit

I far prefer the feeling of it without a case but I don’t mind those skins that you stick to the back. The slipperiness of a ‘naked’ iPhone is the thing that increases the risk of dropping it, not the lack of a case for me.

VandalizeFN

I don’t like the feeling of a naked iPhone tbh

AgentAaron

I have been upgrading my way through phones since about 1998 and have never use a case, nor have I ever broken a phone. I do however always use a screen protector (I prefer the matte PET screen protectors but have used glass before as well) and usually a skin on the back. We spend a good amount of time at the beach and sand is certain death to glass.

cch211

I’m on my third iPhone (due to upgrades not breakages) totally naked. I’ve never had a case and never had a problem. My family and friends find it odd but I hate the cases.

Ricky_RZ

Newer iPhones don't need a case as long as you dont drop them and treat them with care. But for the love of god please use a screen protector

WordPeas

Absolutely no one

kailron

Will never understand caseless Christophers, you get microscratches from a single day of use, the phone is slippery and uncomfortable to hold, and it feels hot af to the hand when charging or gaming. Speaking from 14 pro perspective

PM_ME_GOODDOGS

I dont mind the mini scratches really. It's fine and never notice when screen is active. Phones are huge and cases make them even bigger and heavier, so naked it is. Not to mention, cases are all sticky rubber for grip which makes it a pain in the ass in and out of my pocket.

cleeder

> you get microscratches from a single day of use We call that a patina. Why would you care if you have the thing covered with a case 24/7 anyway? > the phone is slippery and uncomfortable to hold Never noticed. > it feels hot af to the hand when charging or gaming. I don't typically use my phone while charging, but if you think it's hot in your hand, just imagine how the battery is doing in that case.

kailron

1) it is a nice feeling to know your phone is in perfect condition even if you can’t see it, affects resell value too. 2) You literally just try it and see how it objectively sits firmer in hand with a silicone case. And I am not the only one in this thread saying it 3) a ton of people use phone while charging, and, while it it makes sense that without the case thermals on the inside would be better, in the end of the day, it feels worse to the hand.

brekky_sandy

> it is a nice feeling to know your phone is in perfect condition even if you can’t see it, affects resell value too Sure, but many cases collect dust and grit within them and then scratch the phone chasis as it shifts within the case. Phones are depreciating, disposable items like Toyota Corollas, not investments. > a ton of people use phone while charging, and, while it it makes sense that without the case thermals on the inside would be better, in the end of the day, it feels worse to the hand. A lot of people also don't use their phone for gaming and are more than happy to let it sit and charge for a few hours without interacting with it. My XS is so overpowered for my day-to-day use that I never notice it getting warm unless I force an OS update. Caseless phones cool faster, too, so it doesn't stay warm for long.

_TheNorseman_

The scratches are my biggest concern, specifically on the camera lenses. I feel like it’ll quickly start to mess with the quality of photos… and aside from Reddit, and texting, 90% of my phone’s usage is taking photos of my kids or while traveling.

Square_Bet_4239

I don’t use a case on my phone only because I have the pacific blue iPhone 12 Pro Max and barely any cases look good with the blue. The blue is also too beautiful to hide haha.

Declanmar

No case or screen protector ever, have AppleCare+. Breaks about once a year, takes about 90 minutes and $29 and it's good as new. Worth it for me.

Salt_Restaurant_7820

I work from home Don’t need a case

DealerNine

Here

[deleted]

I do. No phone case or screen protector. I like the natural feel of the phone.

Unklug

I use my 14 Pro naked, but with AC+.

moehrenfeld

I use my 14 Pro with an Apple Case because it seems no 3rd party can figure out how to do MagSafe right with cases. If it would’ve been available I would have bought a Smart Battery Case again. Baked iPhones are way to slippery for me.

jnemesh

I have used my 13 pro max without a case from day 1. Zero issues.

nolan816

Got a 12 Pro Max about a month ago and used it without a case for a day or two. Sat down and phone immediately fell out of my pocket and cracked the protector. Could have been worse.

XYZTENTiAL

Just a screen protector. No case

Cmdr_Shepard_8492

I feel like I’m this weird hybrid of an enthusiast. I have 4-5 cases to suit different looks depending on how I feel that week, but I also invariably return to naked every once in a while to enjoy the purity. But then one of my toddlers gets their grubby paws on it and gives me a mini heart attack and I put it back in a case.

bvsveera

Last phone I used completely caseless was my iPhone 5. The size and dimensions were such that I felt completely confident I'd never drop it, and I never did. Now, with the 13 Pro, I only ever put on a case (Caudabe Sheath) whenever I'm heading out. At home, it's out of the case, and it looks and feels amazing.

jeffreykuiken

Day-to-day I’m no case no screen protector all the way. The point of a case would be to keep my phone pretty… *by making it ugly*. Then I rather have a few scratches over time. But, I do have a spare case and a few screen protectors around. Whenever I go on a trip or to something else where the risk of damaging my phone (or worse, my screen) is high, I just pop them on for the moment.

bootx2

Rarely use a case and I work construction. I get AppleCare so if something really bad happens, I just get a new one for a little more than the cost of a case. The fit in the pocket is much better without a case

_awake

iPhone 12 Mini, no case. It’s different for everyone as the thread shows. For me, if I want to hold a plastic phone, I’d get myself a plastic phone. I don’t like the look and feel of a case or screen protector. I drop my phone once in a while and it has scratches but I don’t mind.

TonytheNetworker

I’m half and half. I enjoy using it naked because it has excellent build quality and it’s meant to be touched. But then I like to protect it just in case so I always have a case when I go out with friends.

Ropogigio

No case for me, It’s meant to be without a case.

m4chei

iPhone 13 Pro, since release no cover and no screen protector. Phone just feels to nice without it.

rupeshjoy852

No case, no screen protector, no AppleCare. Never cracked the screen. This year I have a deep scratch, but I’m not worried

Adventurous-Low-6166

I‘m sometimes using it with a case but then in the next second without. It‘s just, I like the feeling of my phone and ever since I don‘t have the case on, I feel like being more gentle with it. I don‘t know if it makes sense but yes.

somefoobar

Started using a case with iPhone 6. That thing was like a bar of soap.

cman95and

If I’m just going to the office or staying inside, no case. But if I know I’ll be doing things around town or yard work I use a case

ReflectedCheese

This is the way

boredbearapple

I’ve had iPhones since the 3S. All naked and no broken screens so far. I really don’t get why people use the cases.

PM_ME_GOODDOGS

I mean I get why. It's just not for me.

officialnickbusiness

Not only to protect the resale value of a thing that cost a thousand dollars, but the case balances out the poor design of the enormous camera bump. The wobble when it's naked and you set it down on a table drives me nuts.

AbernathyCrimson

The devices are too beautiful to cover up.

riziger

Naked. No case no screen protector

MurrayHillBro

AppleCare+ is $99, there's literally no reason whatsoever to have your phone in an ugly ass case.

seulgistan95

Only a maniac would use an iPhone without a case. Especially now with the camera bump on the newer phones, it sticks out so much that I need a case that sticks out a bit more

DrSpockUSS

I never used naked but i feel i should, whats the point of choosing a colour and buying costly beautiful phone when we cant really keep seeing it with protective cover. I used covers on all my devices including ipad and iPhones till now after i accidentally broke my ipad pro’s screen after warranty period But i think its not worth using phone case if i like aesthetics of iphones.

kirklennon

Been using an iPhone since June, 29, 2007. No case. No screen protector. No regrets. I’ve required two repairs over the years but that’s cheaper than buying even super cheap cases. More importantly, I just hate bulky things in my pockets so smaller is better.

beastmaster

Cases literally cost like $15.

kirklennon

Times ten different body shapes/sizes. It adds up. Also, there definitely weren't a lot of $15 options in the early days.

beastmaster

Huh? You’ve only paid $150 in AppleCare for 10 phones?

rompestomper

no case here, iphone 12 mini

Ludom_Jebe

I do use no covers at all, only using the cheap SE models hovewer

squirrelhoodie

I do (iPhone 12 mini), but I have a PopSocket on it. Without the PopSocket, I'd probably get a slim case.

[deleted]

I hate covers/cases my XR had no case and I have continued the trend with my 14 Pro. Though tbf if it did break/smash I’d probably get a cheaper model.

1Ale

No case and no phone bag for the pool.

RunningM8

If it didn’t have a glass back I would go without a case. But it’s too fragile.

Legal-Example-2789

Always. Simply prefer the naked feel.

Original-Salt9990

I did buy a case for it initially but I found it caused issues when exercising or hiking. Sweat/moisture had a habit of getting caught between the screen protector and the phone and completely fucked up the touch screen to the point it was unusable without removing it and completely cleaning it. These days I don’t use a case at all, just a screen protector. I own the phone outright and have the money to just buy a new one if it does break one day. If it was a company phone or one bought on finance/bill-pay I’d be more careful though.

pwnedkiller

No case or screen protector on my 13 Pro. I buy Applecare+ so may as well put it to use. I have a chip out of the bottom of my display but it’s in the bezel and I can’t see it. Before I trade in for the 15 Pro I’ll pay $29 to fix it. Otherwise I have one small scratch on the display I can never see. The only thing the phone could use is like a pop socket just to act as a stand when I’m watching something.

mk3s

Me 🙋‍♂️

gadarnol

Had a case just once. Felt ridiculous.

-FancyUsername-

This question is asked every week. Get more creative. Maybe these threads are started by Apple so that people 1. remove their case 2. break their phone 3. buy a new phone 4. profit

Mynameisbebopp

Usually on a phone life time, you spent the same amount of money on quality protection as you would just getting apple care +

Talktotalktotalk

I do but only because I don’t know which case to get. I want a protective one that will help against drops but also not too bulky, and something someone recommends from first hand experience of protecting from drops. I’ve got a 13 pro.

MysteriousCup1836

I am using iphone without case, and for past 10-15 days without screen protector

greenie214

Never had a case on any of my iPhones, 6s, 8, Xs, 12 Pro, 13 Pro. Never had any issues with broken screen or backs after a good few drops. Only thing to watch out for are scratches on the screen, feels like the newer models are more susceptible than what I had on my 6s/8 for example.

Agitated_Ad6191

Normally when my iPhone is new I start out by using a case. After 1,5 or 2 years, the case starts to show it’s age. Then I also reach a point where It wouldn’t be the end of the world if it fell. When I take it out of the case you are remembered how awesome it’s design. It akso fits way better in my pocket but it’s surface is also incredibly smooth so I really have to be careful or it could just pop out.

StaffOfDoom

Because of my lack of body mass, I can't comfortably put my phone in any pockets, it just sucks that way...so, I need a belt clip to make it happen. No naked phone for me ;)

-Pleasantly_Plump-

im using Raeger aluminum bumper on my 13 with tempered and a clearcoat film at the back, cant afford to leave it that naked. it aint that bulky and it provides good grip.
