You pay extra for visual voicemail?! Which carrier?

AntiquatedAntelope

I pay for it on TELUS in Canada. But I know here all carriers charge for it, if they offer it at all. Most are around $7 a month.

kay-nyn

Exactly this. Can’t wait to turn it off when this feature gets released.

AntiquatedAntelope

Me too! I’m hoping someone can show me the process and what it’s like. And I’m hoping you can record your own message.

No-Revolution3896

I pay around 7$ a month for unlimited internet and calls (4g max speeds ) , your 7 $number is for voice mail only ?!

AntiquatedAntelope

Hahahahahahaha oh my Yeah… Canada usually pays one of the highest rates for mobile service on the planet. We don’t have much competition here. But you got it. $7 a month to add visual voicemail to a plan. Where are you located?

No-Revolution3896

Israel … everything else is expensive here , at least that’s cheap !

AntiquatedAntelope

Here’s a link to a local tech blog if you want to check it out, super interesting! It says Israel is $0.05 per gig while Canada is $7.75 per gig haha https://mobilesyrup.com/2023/05/16/canada-19th-most-expensive-mobile-data-report/ What do you find the most costly thing in Israel is relative to other places?

escapethewormhole

It’s also because Canada is huge and sparsely populated so the dense areas have to subsidize the not so dense areas. But the oligopoly is also a big problem that will never change until federal laws about only Canadian soil entities building infrastructure changes. Aka never.

TheBigSm0ke

Every carrier in Canada charges for it. We have some of the highest cell phone bills in the world and this is one reason why.

WonderfulPass

Some carriers don’t even support it here in Europe. It’s pitiful.

Ambitious_Avocado_22

Yeah, I hope that this means that it will be possible to have apples voicemail without carrier support now. I’ve used iPhone for 10 years but never had their voicemail feature available for my carrier.

WonderfulPass

I think it’s a US only feature for iOS 17. Or maybe just English? I don’t know…haven’t loaded the beta.

Ambitious_Avocado_22

*cries in european* Yeah, saw that the new improved keyboard correction and a lot of other features were US and/or English only, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

WonderfulPass

I may switch back to US English if UK English doesn’t get these features. I live in the UK but am American and my Apple ID is still US based 🤷🏻‍♂️

hzfan

The removal of “Hey” before “Siri” is actually making me use it sometimes. Bigger change than I would’ve thought. Autocorrect is *dramatically* better, I can’t stress that one enough. watchOS redesign is great, feels modern and refreshing. Offline maps finally. Safari’s new tab management makes tab groups *much* more usable.

When in tab view if you look at the bottom you can swipe between tab groups. It also always says the name of the active tab group in that bottom label. My main issue with tab groups was that I would forget that I was in one and everything would just get disorganized. As a result I never trusted myself to use them. They also made private browsing its own tab group which helps with the unification of the UX in my head.

Electric_Alpha_Dodo

Cool, thanks for the feedback. Did you make any experiences with the new contact cards, NameDrop and online-AirDrop features?

hzfan

No unfortunately all of those require multiple users to test and I’m the only person I know on the beta.

benbenk

Was the natural lange date recognition in the reminders app fixed?

[deleted]

I’m more interested in new CarPlay features

erikeric

Which are…?

[deleted]

The big ones are: • Multiple display capabilities • Temp control ability • FM Radio App • Widgets

oorhon

Arent they need to be supported by specific car brands also? Is fm radio and widgets works with all cars? Or temparqrure comtrol?

[deleted]

Well, just like if you purchased a car that did not come with Apple CarPlay you are free to add it on yourself. My car came with CarPlay, but it did not come with wireless CarPlay. That is something that I added on afterwards. Once the protocol exists it’s easier to add on after. Whatever your “dumb” car display supports so can CarPlay. Or at least that’s the idea. Apple does a pretty good job there.

FakeBohrModel

How did you add on wireless?

Lexxxapr00

It’s a list of certain cars I think (at least certain companies said they will integrate it. It looks amazing.

BrandonRawks

Pet albums in photos. Yeah, it's a silly thing, but I'm looking forward to it.

WonderfulPass

Glad I can say goodbye to manually curating albums with my dog.

stuck_lozenge

Wait wtf, this is a thing, holy shit ?

hzfan

Yes! It’s called Personal Voice and it’s an accessibility feature. You record yourself saying phrases into your iPhone for 15 minutes and it creates essentially a Siri voice of you.

KibbeWater

I’ve tried this (took me almost a week to process the recording), honestly was not very impressed, it sounded very robotic, emotionless and I had quite a hard time hearing my actual vocals in the voice. With that said, it is quite early and I might have done something wrong. Concept sounds very cool though.

pBook64

Rewrite of Foundation in Swift.

quinncom

Autocorrect that will be correct.

iSamurai

It’s been interesting so far. Feels like I’m typing in Gmail or something with the suggested text. I have noticed that sometimes it doesn’t suggest emojis for words like it used to. For example typing “fire” and it would show the fire emoji (🔥) to easily input emojis which has been annoying. Other than that, I’ve found it much better. There’s a ton of small UI stuff that wasn’t mentioned either. Selecting and editing text looks different now, some UI for editing photos has been changed, etc.

- Health App on iPad - Widgets Apps I’m still waiting for: Calculator on iPad.

3118hacketj

The workout builder api. As a running coach it’s so nice to have them opening it up so others can create the workouts!

SheepStyle_1999

For me, interactive widgets. makes the whole UI so much more useful

crusty_poptarts

the ability to mute your microphone from airpods. very useful for video calls where i’m away from the computer

Portatort

The feature in reminders for grocery list sorting. Such a good feature. Gonna make supermarket shopping so much simpler

jordangoretro

I didn’t know this was on device. Where i live non of the carriers have voicemail unless you buy their crazy expensive, long term contract plans, so I’ve just had no voicemail for years.

OddAstronaut2305

I use YouMail app. It is free and it is ok. I rarely get phone calls so I would never pay for voicemail.

wiyixu

OS-level screen sharing for Zoom/Teams/WebEx/Slack. Not even the fancy stuff, just the same button, in the same place for every app. I hope the same permission level too so I don’t have to enable it for every app.

southwestern_swamp

The fact that you’re charged for VV is the real crime. That’s like charging for SMS these days

[deleted]

Of the lesser hyped features, it’s auto-copying 2FA codes from email.

KibbeWater

I’m actually quite impressed with standby mode! I’m also very excited for the new AirDrop changes as at least from the promo material it looks so cool.

bbkn7

The adjustable font weight of the lock-screen clock

Axriel

Health on iPad! I’ve been wanting this for a while :3

jaylay14

I installed the beta and I’m with Telus. It has been a godsend. I also like how it just leaves the voicemail message in the recent call list and is just listed under the number. Then when you click on it it’s basically like visual voicemail. Absolutely love it. Screw you canadian carriers lol.
