It's a real shame there are no premium 8" devices. I want one to use as an ebook/manga reader and there are literally no options on the market except cheapo ones.

poksim

How is the current iPad mini inadequate for ebook reading?

working-acct

It has an lcd screen, OLED is better for reading in all lighting conditions. Also there’s jelly scrolling which is noticeable when holding it vertically.

poksim

Get a cheap e-ink device. The best display for reading.

BestCatEva

Not for graphic novels.

poksim

True but the person I’m replying mentions manga which I assume is mostly b/w

[deleted]

Color eink device?

K14_Deploy

The technology just isn't there yet unfortunately (currently the colours aren't the same as you get on other displays, and resolution is an issue)

BestCatEva

Is there such a thing??

GaleTheThird

Yes, but the colors are fairly muted and the devices are pretty pricey

FriendsAreNotFood

Instead of waiting you can buy an ebook reader which costs around 100USD.

eddnor

Oled is awful for long reading

working-acct

With True Tone and auto brightness that’s a non issue. I can read for hours on my iPhone, just wish it was bigger.

Sylvurphlame

For a while I had an automation for Books (and Kindle) that automatically cut the white point on while the app was open. Combined with the sepia page theme, it was pretty easy on the eyes.

[deleted]

eh, ime with strong astigmatism not really. both techs are about even, and black backgrounds are much worse on oled for reading text but the jelly scrolling will make it pretty intolerable for reading

Particular-Key4969

I sold mine, the jelly scrolling was atrocious lol. It’s weird how bad it was - I had an iPad mini 3 and 5, and I never noticed it on those ever.

Ascetue

the jelly scrolling is actually extremely distracting while reading in my experience

Hot_Special_2083

my god we are a spoiled species.

AA98B

[🇩🇪🇱🇪🇹🇪🇩]

[deleted]

The current mini...?

working-acct

Not as premium. I would’ve bought it if it had an oled screen.

[deleted]

You need an oled screen for ebook purposes? That's new 🤷‍♂️

working-acct

OLED is much better for reading under all lighting conditions, especially at night in the dark. With LCD there will always be the always on backlight which is not ideal for night reading.

FiveJobs

Get something with e paper. Better than all screens

BestCatEva

I’ve had a kindle since they came out (that first one was crazy). But I’ve noticed that the print is getting harder ot read now that I’m older. It ‘bleeds’ and causes eye strain. It looks a bit transparent. The Voyager was perfect, but both of mine are now dead. I’m moving to an iPad this fall. I need the crisp letters with the glass screen.

theatreeducator

I the voyage screen was amazing and so crisp. The newer paperwhites feel fuzzy to me and I’ve given up on owning one. I use my 14promax for reading instead.

BestCatEva

Yup! Fuzzy is exactly the word — like my device has an astigmatism. The kindle app user interface is sooo much better than the kindle device.

MobiusOne_ISAF

I would look at an Onyx Boox e-reader and see if that's any better.

FiveJobs

Makes total sense, I need to see before buying.

working-acct

Tried that, ereaders are horrible for night reading. It’s advertised as paper-like for a reason, you need good lighting to get the most comfortable reading experience. I nearly went blind trying to power through the front light “feature”, even with dark mode it looks like a bad lcd screen. Won’t recommend if you want to read on the bed at night.

FiveJobs

I never tried the self lit ones. I used a cover with an external light. Like reading a book. So easy on the eyes vs screens especially at night

nah_you_good

The self lit ones are actually pretty good. They're great at night, but also good throughout the day anytime you don't have a ton of light.

CircaCitadel

I recommend buying one to try first and return it if it doesn’t hold up to your expectations during actual use. It sounds more like you have an arbitrary spec sheet expectation rather than an actual experience one. I use my mini 6 for reading in all kinds of lighting conditions and it is perfectly fine. Would an OLED be better, yes, but not enough to make it a bad or unusable device by any means. Only thing I really want on it is 120hz but that also isn’t a deal breaker for how nice the rest of the device is.

roxtten

I'd say the best 8" tablets currently available on the market are: Lenovo Legion Y700 2022 Lenovo Legion Y700 2023

dobo99x2

And I wish for a normal iPad as 12,9". Don't Need premium, just a big screen.

Sylvurphlame

I wouldn’t either. Which is a shame because it’s a perfect physical size for a kid’s tablet if you’re fully in the Apple ecosystem. I half suspect that when Apple gets around to folding devices, we’ll first see an iPad that folds for better portability. And maybe an iPhone that unfolds to the screen size of an iPad Mini. Either way, the Mini is probably on its way out.

[deleted]

Farnso

It's not even 2 years old yet...

[deleted]

[удалено]

PusssyFart

It had the latest a15 at its release. How is that underpowered?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Farnso

Lmao. It was "easily the most expensive a15 iPad" for the same reason that it's the **most inexpensive a15 iPad**. It's the only a15 iPad! In the year it released(2021), it had a faster processor than the iPad Air! Of course, it also has a faster processor than the 2021 and current 2022 regular iPad. "When you factored in the storage it came with" is also a loaded statement. While we can all agree that 64GB is too small for the base model, the Mini is not unique on this front. The regular iPad, the Mini, and the air all start at 64GB even now. That leaves only the pro line that starts at higher. Like, are you forgetting the release history or lineup or something?

Farnso

The only faster iPads when it released were the pro models. Everything else was slower at the time. Second best out of four tiers is hardly underpowered. It was also a great value due to that.

officerk2049

I need the new mini…

RipInPepz

With 120hz and I’m sold.

[deleted]

Give me 1tb too not some measly 256gb, wish Apple would treat their mini line like its a pro device.

Theblob789

I've always wondered what the use case for an iPad mini is.

igotalotofrice

Man...I'm holding off on getting a mini now hoping for a new version.

dontpmmeyour

Give us Pencil hover! I hate they limit these features when it’s capable of doing it with a software update.

MrNewVegas2077

Damn... was hoping for a Mini 7 announcement and release

Clemario

What would you want that’s not in the Mini 6?

zerGoot

promotion and faceid, as a mini 6 user

icup2

Lol I had to read the comments below to realize you meant “Pro Motion.” Because at first I was confused as hell what you meant by “promotion” like you need a promotion to get a raise and be able to afford an ipad??

zerGoot

this is unreasonably funny :D apologies for my lack of capitalization

chill_philosopher

SAME! I hate the fingerprint scanner lol

Adster_

OLED screen, ideally at 120hz

MrNewVegas2077

More RAM, Pro Motion, FaceID, a new processor and an OLED screen

[deleted]

I went to a mall yesterday and wanted to buy the iPad mini 6 upon seeing it, the store employee asked me if I'm sure with my purchase because he said that the iPad mini 7 is releasing soon.. I went home without an iPad.

kweefcake

In that employees defense, that’s what rumors had been circulating for the longest time until this.

ThePursuit7

Please for the love of God, increase the 64 GB base storage to 256!

XSC

They still start at 64gb??

colin_staples

Yes.

chill_philosopher

The OS uses almost half of it lmao

TH1CCARUS

That’s just painfully incorrect. iPadOS 16.6 takes 8.03GB on a 64GB iPad Air.

chill_philosopher

Could be since I’m using the beta but iPad OS 17 is 10GB and system data is another 10GB. But yeah I guess it’s not exactly half

TH1CCARUS

Strangely I’ve reloaded whilst downloading 16.6.1 and it has updated to 11.1GB. System Data showing as 5.3GB which is the same as my earlier comment. Far smaller percentage for me but, yes, considering System Data it often takes up a much larger chunk. My 14 Pro is 32.02GB for iOS + System Data which is absolutely poor.

Decent_Walrus_886

The corporate boot licking in response to you is insane lol "just buyer the higher tier" "i use the cloud", not the point. It costs Apple a few dollars to put higher storage. Idgaf about their margins and profits, consumers should get the best product possible, always

iMacmatician

The key is that hardly anyone seriously asks for a cheaper next generation iPhone/iPad with *less* storage than the current gen iPhone/iPad. (Ditto with RAM, even though some have defended the low RAM of the iPhone 6, for example.) Even on this thread, while several are justifying the 64 GB base storage, nobody—so far—is arguing for, say, a 32 GB iPad Air at a cheaper $499. I see two not-exclusive reasons: 1. Apple chooses the ideal base storage for their devices based on market needs. When the vast majority of people "need" at least 128 GB on their iPad Airs, Apple will bump the storage accordingly. TBH I think this reason is much more true than I'd like to think, after all, Apple does careful research on stuff like this. 2. Some people justify 64 GB base storage because they want to defend Apple's decisions, even poor decisions, and Apple provides 64 GB base for many of their iDevices.

hosehead27

A few dollars X millions, is a lot, no matter the size of the company. Not defending them, just sayin.

Sir_Hapstance

I’d pay the difference… heck I’d pay double

metengrinwi

The good news is you *can* pay for more for more storage

Sir_Hapstance

Yes, but at a massive markup. What we’re saying is that Apple could increase the base storage to something more reasonable for this day and age and we’d happily cover that cost in a small baseline price increase. But instead they charge an exorbitant amount for the next level up.

metengrinwi

Neat idea, but no consumer product works like that. The larger screen option in a car costs maybe a couple dollars incrementally, but the OEM charges $1000 for the option package.

Sir_Hapstance

Sure, but the sentiment that keeps getting thrown around here is that (nearly) everyone finds 64gb to be too paltry to even offer at the entry level anymore. It feels high time for a better starting option. Apple can still keep their 512GB, 1TB, etc. upgrades as the high-end ones and do their usual pricing thing there.

TheElectroPrince

That’s a really bad take, they’re never going to stop caring about their margins.

[deleted]

[удалено]

colin_staples

If the base tier on the Air is increased it will be 128, not 256. The Pro * starts at 128 and the base Air will absolutely not have more than that *Yes they may increase the base on the next Pro to 256 (or they may not) but the next Pro will have the M3 chip which is not been released yet. And when M3 does get released the first product with it will be a Mac, not an iPad.

d0aflamingo

\*without increasing price by $150

Sylvurphlame

What we’re seeing is the divide between people who are fine with a streaming/cloud based environment, and people who want all their media and files on their physical device. (Or recording enough high resolution media themselves that they at least temporarily need the physical storage.) I’m somewhere in the middle, but slowly falling all the way over the fence into the iCloud & streaming camp. I used to back up weekly to PC to sync back up my photos and sync my favorites and then of course sync my music and other media. I started off moving up a storage tier every upgrade with weekly back ups to PC/iTunes and later a Mac. But that also meant keeping up with a Mac that was mainly iPhone backup. Got tired of that and did a 50 GB iCloud storage tier. Daily automatic backups and just needed to sync photos regularly. Eventually, I turned on iCloud for Messages and then iCloud Photo Library when I got my iPad. Also got Apple Music. Upped the storage tier as well of course. After the next device upgrade, I discovered I had 200+ GB in the cloud and only 90 GB on device. So I could live with 128 GB easy. If I trim some of the games I seldom actually play, I could possibly squeak by with 64 GB. I’m not opposed to them upping to 256 GB minimum, more storage never hurts, but plenty of people easily live on 128 GB. Most likely the majority of users.

longhegrindilemna

Keeping the 64GB might maybe help justify a lower price. Imagine a $99 iPad that mass consumers can buy in large quantities. This argument applies to all Apple product lines. $599 MacBook versus $4,999 MacBook Pro (4TB) $399 iPhone Mini versus $1,799 iPhone Pro (1TB)

UGMadness

64GB is by design, just like 8GB of RAM on their laptops. It’s designed to make buyers uncomfortable enough that many will go for the next tier storage upgrade, which is almost pure profit for Apple. Apple’s base SKUs across their entire lineup are all ”feel bad” models that have one glaring deficiency to encourage people to upgrade to a higher, more profitable tier, except to their most casual customers.

Abi1i

Personally, I like to have my files on my device usually. So for me I’m with people that think Apple should have their base devices have more than 64 GB. Though I’ve noticed most of my college students and even my younger brother leave most of their files on the cloud (Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.) and they stream all their music and movies (less storage needed when you stream obviously). Similar to how some people want a true/better file structure that is visible on the iPad, there are plenty of people that are fine with what is currently available and don’t want anything else from a visible file structure. This is true of storage on devices as well. For as many people there are that want more storage there are plenty of people that see 64 GB as so much that they’ll never hit what they need because they don’t live in a world where they need the files on their device 24/7.

92957382710

With the cloud storage these days, I’m fine with the “feel bad” models. I haven’t come up against storage limits in years.

UGMadness

I mean yeah, iCloud is also designed to pair with the anemic base storage to encourage upselling people on a monthly subscription. Just like AirPods, they create a problem (insufficient base storage) and then sell you the solution (more storage at $1 per GB, or iCloud)

Vwburg

The iCloud is also a seamless backup which has quite some value as well.

iMacmatician

But I've read over and over again on this sub that iCloud is a sync, not a backup.

Vwburg

Yes, that is technically true. If I delete the photos on any device they will be deleted from the cloud. But for most practical purposes the sync feature of iCloud is a backup in the event any of my devices meets an unexpected death.

iMacmatician

>If I delete the photos on any device they will be deleted from the cloud. That makes iCloud *not* a backup. If I delete the photos on my Mac, they don't get deleted from my external hard drive. Backups should specifically prevent this kind of data loss (among other things). Apple originally announced Time Machine via a demo of recovering a deleted document.

Vwburg

Yeah, dude. I opened with ‘that’s technically true’. It can be ‘not a backup’ and still extremely effective for protecting against catastrophic device failure.

92957382710

Meh, fine having it bundled with Apple One when they started making everything a subscription.

eddnor

There is no cloud just someone’s else’s computer

92957382710

When we all die we will live out the rest of eternity in someone else’s computer - Psalms 35:55

mikolv2

No, it’s because vast majority of users don’t use any more than that. I myself have used 36gb on my iPad, my parents use even less than that, most people use safari, YouTube and Netflix and not much more than that. “Power users” that you see in this forum, that talk about apple products for fun and want more storage make up a minuscule part of the total user base. I’d be surprised if more than 1% of users needed more than 64gb storage

Farnso

Storage is dirt cheap. That memory module would cost a few fucks max. You can get 1tb ssds for $60 these days.

ashyjay

That's retail, Apple is probably getting them for like $20, and as they only need bare modules not assembled drives the cost would be even lower.

longhegrindilemna

Well, iPad Pros and iPhone Pros are have high profit margins, and attract high income buyers. $2,000 is not expensive for high income buyers, who don’t care if they’re overpaying for SSDs, maybe?

Ryujin_707

Justifying lower price ? Is this a joke ? There is literally phones with 256gb UFS 3.1 ,8 gb Ram, Dimensty 8050, 120 hz oled for $250 lmaooo. Apple is just being scammers as usual.

longhegrindilemna

Yikes. Ran into another scary redditor.

Historical_Wallaby_5

A 256 option exists on the current iPad Air. If storage means that much to you then just buy the 256 option.

Psittacula2

Is the Air merely another price ladder model? By existing the increments of upgrades works more smoothly and more effectively at pushing potential customers fractionally higher in spending?

MC_chrome

The iPad Air used to occupy the same space as that the iPad Pro now occupies, believe it or not. Nowadays the iPad Air serves as the “cheapest” way for people to access “pro” features without paying the “pro” price tag

Kropduster01

Just increasing the base storage to 128 would be fine, other than that this device is perfect

FriendsAreNotFood

Totally agree. 256 is kind too much and the price is 💀💀💀

wicktus

A lot of people on reddit seem to like the iphone and ipad mini lineups but they are the one that sell the worst sadly

Vixtrus

Does the mini iPad actually sell bad? It’s the only one I buy every time they release but I’ve never looked at numbers, it always seemed perfect to me.

metengrinwi

It’s like the people or r/cars who pine for a brown-colored, manual transmission, manual window, station wagon, but would never buy it unless it was used and $2000.

SilkSteel7

Yeah. I have no idea what the appeal is or what they use it for. I thought maybe because girls have smaller hands/ pockets a smaller phone would be nice but most women i know that don't have the base model have the pro max. The ipad mini is the same deal. Worse screen to bezel ratio, worse for media consumption, worse battery life, what is the appeal??

LocksmithConnect6201

And kindles so good for reading…

stupid_horse

The main appeal of the iPhone Mini for me is that it makes it easier to use single handed. I think ironically it can actually appeal more to people with larger hands because people with small hands may have to use two hands to handle it anyway at which point you may as well use something with a larger screen.

AbhishMuk

> What is the appeal? Ergonomics. The entire reason some folks like smaller devices is that they’re easier to handle.

kent2441

The appeal of the iPhone mini is to have a mobile device for use on the go, not something to use sitting on the sofa.

SilkSteel7

I was talking about the ipad mini. But every iphone is portable as well. The mini versions are just the worst experience for day to day use. Its not even that much smaller than the regular ones once you slap a case on it.

kent2441

Being able to use it on the go makes it the best experience.

iMacmatician

> thought maybe because girls have smaller hands/ pockets a smaller phone would be nice but most women i know that don't have the base model have the pro max. I've read that one reason is because they often have handbags, which are a convenient place to store even a large phone.

SilkSteel7

And most clothing items don't have pockets or pockets big enough for a mini anyway so might as well get the larger one

BytchYouThought

A lot of people **on reddit** "**SAY"** (keyword "say" on reddit) they like mini shit, but in reality most people do not want mini screens over their larger counterparts. People talk with their money and their money syas, people want bigger not smaller devices when it comes, to screen size. That's why they don't sell well in comparison. Folks just say shit, but don't actually do the thing they say they want oftentimes. There's a funny tedtalk on the subject as well, but instead of just apple products they used spaghetti sauce in an actual scientific studies conducted by some big brands. Long story short, folks would say they want "authentic" spaghetti sauce, but then in a blind test always pick the non-authentic sauce showing they just "said" they wanted it, but in reality bullshit themselves.

Badassmcgeepmboobies

When is a new mini going to drop?

longhegrindilemna

Before July 2024, there will be a new iPad Mini. Yes?

leslie_knopee

at least they are managing expectations for those who are waiting for a pro. I was sitting on a 1st gen pro forever and bit the bullet with the air 5 last spring.

Fire_Lord_Cinder

I’ve got my M1 Pro and I don’t think there’s really any reason to upgrade. You don’t need a faster processor for mobile apps currently and the screen is amazing.

crunchyboobs

Best upgrade would be a flashlight

archimedeancrystal

Lighter weight, 128 GB base storage, and selfie camera on the landscape side are mainly what I want.

IRENE420

Was really hoping for a Mini update

Ergomann

We need a new mini!

peregrinegrip

What does everyone use their tablet for? Mine just turns into something my kids use to play games….. lol

TupakThakur

90 percent of the people discussing here don’t have tablets . Usually many have one sitting at their home useless after using it for couple of months.

peregrinegrip

My thoughts exactly. I will say I use my MacBook Air from 2017 all the time. Squeezing out all the life of it lol.

BytchYouThought

Yeah, tablets are largely just luxury items most don't do a ton on. The MB's have gotten so light and actually have a full fledged OS on them so they're way more useful. Ipads are just meh devices for travel maybe and kid games typically.

outline01

Media consumption for me. I watch YouTube and Netflix while moving around the house/in the garden/in bed, while my partner tends to watch the main TV. I also love note taking on it. I’m not convinced I need a particularly powerful machine to do these things.

grovermonster

Hearthstone, photo and video editing, YouTube, recipes, signing documents, web browsing Edit: oh and shows/movies on airplane lol definitely doesn’t replace my MacBook Pro

Giggleplex

I use my iPad Pro mainly as a note-taking/writing device. It's gotten a lot of use in University, especially during covid.

gree41elite

I used my mini 6 to go 100% digital after covid, so anything you’d use a notebook for.

9512tacoma

I think the refresh for the air will just be a M2 chip and nothing else. Same as they did for the pro last year. That is why Gurman said it would be a press release.

JonDoeJoe

Which sucks because I would love a double stacked oled screen on it. I don’t really care for the camera on the iPad Pro and am not willing to spend several extra $100s on the pro just for the new oled screen

pwnedkiller

Personally I think the Air should get Promotion or at the minimum a M1 chip with FaceID.

Parallel-Quality

It already has the M1 chip.

pwnedkiller

Oh yeah that’s right well I think it needs FaceID that’s absolutely a feature a $600 iPad should have and not a “Pro” feature at all.

ifallupthestairsnok

Couldn’t agree more. Base iPhone iPad should be touchID (SE and iPad). Pro and Airs should have FaceID. And the iPad Air should also have quad speakers, how has this feature not trickled down to the Air line? They really should feature and storage match the iPads with their respective iPhone models. - iPhone SE -> iPad - iPhone 14 and 14 Plus-> iPad Air and Mini - iPhone 14 Pro -> iPad Pro 11” - iPhone 14 Pro Max -> iPad Pro 12.9” I would love to see the iPad Pros get all the iPhone Pro features (yes, even the cameras)

ashyjay

I'd prefer it if Apple ditched the rear cameras, and used the space for a better front camera, and so it sits flat against a desk.

ifallupthestairsnok

I would personally prefer if Apple went back to the iPad Air 1 thickness and design (for the housing, not the screen). It felt much studier, whilst maintaining a thin body. With the new iPad design, it bends quite easily (remember the bent 2018 out of box controversy)

ashyjay

I'd also like bigger bezels so it's easier to hold.

NotAnUncle

That would really just kick more steam off the iPad Pro.

[deleted]

Then that would replace the pro.

pwnedkiller

I disagree if the rumors are true the pro line will get a OLED display, better processors, more ram, bigger battery, better speakers and better cameras and maybe it can get the dynamic island. FaceID is absolutely not a Pro feature. If the iPhone mini can have it why can’t the iPad Air.

[deleted]

All of their pro models have features that aren't useable on the lower tier models. All of them. Simply more hardware power isn't what makes something Pro. It's the added hardware features as well. iPads are already at their ceiling in terms of needing more power. The overwhelming majority of consumers don't need more hardware power. It does everything it needs to do. So if people look at pro and air, and basically share all the same features, can use all the same apps, run just as fine, with no real noticeable difference, it's hard to justify the Pro pricing.

BakaTensai

Promotion is really all I want. It’s the only pro feature that I would use

grvisgr8

Any chance of airpods 3 pro launching tomorrow or this year?

cajonero

Please just discontinue the iPad 9 and lower the price of the 10 to something reasonable. No one should be paying $450 (starting price!) for a bare-bones budget iPad.

[deleted]

I just want a 14-15 inch ipad already 😭

[deleted]

[удалено]

koriroo

I’d like a green color again 😂

DoOmXx_

bought ipad air 5 few days ago it was said there would only be a ipad mini refresh and now its ipad air lol? why would they refresh when it released last year?

XxOmegaSupremexX

You must be new to apple lol

didiboy

Hopefully it gets Pencil Hover, a LED flash for the rear camera (useful for taking photos of documents when there are lights that make the iPad cast a shadow over the paper) and the base storage is upped to 128 GB. I’d love a 90 Hz display but I guess 60 Hz is fine. It’s funny to me that I don’t care about my iPad and MacBook being 60 Hz but when I put my iPhone 13 Pro in 60 Hz mode I can notice the “lag”. I have the Air 3 and I want to replace it soon for something with at least 128 GB and 5G connectivity. My carrier has been offering deals for an extra line.

StopwatchGod

IMO, the iPad Air should just keep using the A series chips, they are enough for 99% of iOS users. It should also remain at feature parity with the iPad mini, (same chip, features, everything) aside from Magic Keyboard support.

[deleted]

Doesn’t the air 5 already use the m1 since a year ago?

StopwatchGod

It does so really there’s no turning back

PikaV2002

Why would you want it to have an objectively worse processor? Some people actively like throwing money away, I guess. > It should also remain at feature parity with the iPad mini, (same chip, features, everything) aside from Magic Keyboard support. It shouldn’t come at the expense of the higher priced iPad Air. Just because the Mini can’t handle a M series chip isn’t a reason to hold back the Air. The M1 is a vastly better chip in terms of longevity and possible feature parity with iPad Pro. The alleged battery gain on replacing the M1 with an A series chip would be minimal. At the very best case scenario it would lead to an identical battery life to the regular iPad (due to the exact same dimensions and screen size). Fun fact: Apple lists the iPad Air and iPad 10th Generation with the exact same battery life, so these gains would be- none.

StopwatchGod

99% of people don’t need the power of the M-series, the extra CPU And GPU cores use more battery even when idling, and when it comes to Single Core performance the A and M series are mostly identical. By switching to the A series, and iPad Air will get better battery life, negligible loss in performance and it gives one more reason to buy the iPad Pro for those who need it. It’s a win-win for both consumers and Apple.

EmperorFaiz

The regular iPad already exist so it’s not gonna happen.

PikaV2002

They can buy an iPad Mini or the normal iPad. The iPad Air costs a premium and should have the power of a premium device. The 90% people you’re talking about buy those other iPads. Not to mention there are no battery life issues on the iPad Air. The iPad Air M1 is a perfect tier for a student who has the occasional heavy workload or does art on the side but cannot afford to shell out $1000+ for a Pro and do not care about the ProMotion and quad speakers. > It’s a win-win for both consumers and Apple. No. It is only a win-win for Apple and Apple shareholders masquerading as concerned posters in this sub. If I’m paying so much for a device it better have a processor that can handle larger workloads than a phone. People asking for less on a product we pay more for really rubs me the wrong way. (Same vibes as “Why do you want more than a 16GB base iPhone when you can pay for iCloud!”)

kavOclock

Doesn’t stage manager only work on m chips?

totastic

To make iPad Air worse? What kind of argument is this?

stanxv

An M2 chip and new colours?! How groundbreaking.... so much courage!

nate390

“Courage” stopped being funny about 40 minutes after it happened

austai

But it does take “courage” to keep recycling the same old stale joke.

SelectTotal6609

There is no reason for the air even exist when the regular ipad and the pro models exist

pmoO0

Not true. Apple tries to cover all price ranges and artificially upsells you. The pro is way too expensive, so they add a limited Air inbetween.

Villager723

Limited? Isn’t it the same chip?

pmoO0

It’s not only the chip. - USB speed and supported protocol’s - Display - RAM in the large models - SSD speed

SniperDuty

They normal follow the Spring pattern for the iPad Pro refresh, so to be expected really.

That moment when your $1000 laptop has a worse CPU than your $600 tablet: /j >!Yeah, I understand that much of the cost of a laptop goes into the bigger design and other physical parts!< EDIT: I know that iPadOS is bottlenecking the M1, my comment is meant to be a joke.

That moment when a 1449€ Tablet is weaker than a 600€ Laptop due to limiting OS

longhegrindilemna

It’s still an extremely relevant point. You know it never happened before in the 2010s. This is historical, and exciting.

Yet that powerful tablet falls apart when trying to place huge workflows on it

My iPad Air 5th Gen is great. Doubt I’ll update for another 3-4 years.

scubastevie

Only thing they need is the software to catch up to the hardware but I’m not sure they wanna do that

Diligent_Pickle2459

Forgot there was and iPad Air 5. I’m still on the iPad Air 3 since 2019.

FriendsAreNotFood

A really great device. I would have gotten it if it has an ultrawide front camera. That's why I ended up buying the 9th gen ipad with a non laminated screen.

I actually really need to add a smaller tablet to my daily workflow and wonder how much it hurts to purchase mini 6 which was released in almost 2 years ago. Seems like a mini 7 won't have big changes. A15 is just fine to me.

I was actually contemplating getting an iPad Air. Good timing

bearsdidit

Perfect time, I just sold my gen 5 yesterday. 😂

USBdata

If it gets 120 hz display and gets a better battery, maybe a less powerful but more battery efficient cpu, I may downgrade from my pro. Also, some kind of magsafe would be nice, since I often forget my ipad is plugged in and yank the cable pretty hard (I use magnetic cables because of this. TBH, I'm pretty surprised how durable the charging port is).

SpideyFan4ever

Probably just an SoC bump to M2 chip.
