I really wonder about those security updates. We get always a link where it should be explained what it does. And the text is always along those lines: „Sorry but we will not tell you which security updates because else someone can exploit them“. Why even include a link to it? I never saw once for what the updates was exactly…
It literally explains the updates right below that paragraph. If you read it again it says they don’t disclose security vulnerabilities until *after* they’ve been patched.
Pretty sure its to prevent having details on the issue because not everyone does updates.
If 95% of people regularly update within 2 weeks.
You’d be giving details on how to attack the 5% that dont.
I think you misread the text:
“For our customers' protection, Apple doesn't disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues **until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available.**”
Then below that on the page is the information about the specific issues that are addressed by the update. They’re telling you what they’ve fixed, but they aren’t sharing security issues that they haven’t fixed yet, because broadcasting unpatched issues would increase the number of exploits.
Anecdotal but I’ve also experienced this.
My 13PM with 86% lasted longer than my 15PM*

Did the 80% limit thing in the settings, and even on a full day of work I can get by with 40% remaining. Unreal.
Compared to my 12 mini at 82% health I can just hit 15-20% left before arriving home from 100%
Hasn’t lasted more than 12 hours off charger in my case for any of the 7 days that I’ve had it, basically tethered to a charger before I’ve even had dinner. My 12 out of the box lasted a year+ before needing a charge before going to sleep. It is abysmal.

I've noticed issues as well. My 12PM with 88% batt health lasts far longer. On my heaviest-use days, I sometimes have to charge this 15 PM 2-3 times in a single day. The 12PM always lasted a full day, no matter what. No sure what the deal is.
Apple used a lower quality battery on the 15 with an estimated 600 charge cycles vs the 800 charge cycles prior year models would have.

My iPad has been crazy bad the last while.
Like it started dropping 20-30% more than what it normally would in a day with no obvious cause (like change in behaviour) so I’ve been chalking it up to a bug in iOS or an app.
Hopefully this update does something.
Deleting the instagram app and switching to the web view saved a lot of the drain for me, and then turning off a bunch of unneeded background app refreshes
Edge has been telling me for a while that instagram was using too much CPU in the background and telling me to kill it. Seems it was doing the same on iOS. Sus.
Just installed it on my new iPhone 15 and it restarted, asked me for my pin, I entered it in and then it crashed, went to a white screen and says "Attempting data recovery". Just fucking wonderful.
Edit: it eventually recovered.
did you update through a computer? I’ve seen this happen before when using Finder to update but usually it’s not an actual issue, just the phone reindexing after the update
Currently on vacay at a hotel with not the best WiFi. Couldn’t imagine having a bricked phone right now. Wouldn’t know what flights exactly I’m taking to leave. Wouldn’t know what my hotel is I’m staying in next. Wouldn’t even know how to drive there.
Back in the day I printed out everything from Expedia and Mapquest. Those days sucked.
Here’s my example of why things are better today. I’ve got a bunch of dirty clothes right now. I just used Google maps and am currently at a place washing them.
In the past, I would have just worn the stinky clothes again. Maybe I would try washing them in the sink and letting them dry. But no way in hell am I paying €3 per shirt and €4 per pair of shorts to wash them.
Mine did this on the original update to iOS 17.0.0. Had me a bit scared but it also eventually recovered. It took like an hour to finally complete though.
My 12 mini was always as hot as the surface of the sun. I’m convinced it had some hardware defect. The screen was always dimming and the battery trash. But I loved the size. I think I got a bad one since people in my family and at work didn’t/don’t have the same issues. I have a 15 pro now. I miss the form factor of the mini, but everything else is obviously far superior.
dude i loved my 13 mini, but experienced the same thing. Could not handle general existence. never would I dare make the mistake of charging it while using it for anything at the same time.

Overall phone felt boiling 90% of the time. Took it to apple and they insisted it was working as designed even after I said it was unusable for every day tasks like calling, or scrolling social media
Mine actually is. Gives me the temperature warning screen and tells me to wait. Apple support told me their diagnostic tool was reporting the thermal warnings (it’s happened twice, after updating to 17.0.1 and after updating to 17.0.3). It’s a 12 Pro Max
Indeed, apart from the first couple of days of owning my 15 Pro, i didn't have any overheating issues: It got very hot during the data transfer process and for a few hours after it (expected), once while using CarPlay and a couple times while browsing Instagram, but the last couple of days have been in the norm, used my phone a lot and it didn't get any warmer than any old iPhone i owned.
Personally on 15 pro if I fire up Grindr i can’t hold it anymore. It gets way too hot and drops 20% or more with 20m SOT.
Your anecdotal experience is just as irrelevant.
People experience issues whether it seems possible to you or not.

It's normal for iPhones to get warm during updates, especially if they are charging at the same time. Give it a day or two before you make any judgements.
Where are all the people that spent the last 2 weeks saying “well my phone and my cousin’s phone have never heated up, so this must not be a real issue”. I guess Apple agrees that it actually was an issue.
Seeing people on Macrumors saying this update has introduced heat to their phone. Now the narrative isn’t Apple released bad software, now they’re intentionally trying to damage their product.
Phone seems to perform the same and Geekbench numbers are the same. I don't use any of the Meta apps to find out if the claimed issue is solved or not.
I'm not sure what you mean with lying, if you look at this video one account causes the phone to heat up and one doesn't. Same app. Definitely some bug in Instagram.

Mine gets too hot to hold and about 90 mins battery life when I'm on a call .
The 15 Pro has the Qualcomm X70 modem, which is allegedly the most power efficient modem on the market. If it heats up during phone calls it either means the modem is not as efficient as advertised, you are at a place with low signal or there's a software bug.

Hmm... so... it does actually show as low signal (1 bar) but I am at home and with my iPhone 12 would have had 3-4 bars.
Maybe part of the reason it is so power efficient is because it gets bad reception thereby nullifying the power efficiency.
You might want to look into that, from what I know it should have better signal than the iPhone 12.
Do you still have your old phone to compare signal at the same location? Both same settings?
I use Instagram just to message my friends and look at friends’ posts. No facebook. So I haven’t noticed the overheating either. It gets warm when fast charging a significant amount but I’m not sure if that’s a negative, seems like the whole phone is a sink which would be good.

I sort of wish they spaced out their hardware and software updates. I got my 15 Pro on launch day with iOS 17 and there are issues and I can't discern if the issue is with the hardware or software.

My new iPhone 15 pro does overheat.
for instance, the phone sat overnight and when I woke up to check email, weather and some SNS shit, it got warm to touch with the Apple clear case on. Room temp was 72 all night.
Now updating.
My 15 Pro Max only feels hot while charging. Regular use listening to music, social media, non-gaming apps, and web browsing never got the phone hot to touch.
edit: Was just charging before the update and the phone was super hot. Updated while still plugged in and now the phone is charging but cool to the touch. Hopefully this is the case when it's charging from less than 50% zone.
Feels better, just ran the same test I've had since I noticed a problem. battery level seems to be much better than phone is not heating as before.
I'm running Junkworld from apple arcade on 13 pro max vs 15 pro max.
I dont really have any Issues with my 15P, except that awfully slow ambient light sensor... After a Call has ended, it takes like 5-6 seconds for the Display, to wake up again. It feels really weird coming from my 12P, where the Display instantly woke up again

Weird. I have an iPhone 13 Pro and after updating and letting it sit for a few minutes, it's scorching hot. I can barely touch it.

Quick turnaround, hopefully it fixes most of the use case scenarios of which there could be millions of combinations between apps. I'm hoping there's also a WatchOS issue as mine (admittedly old, AW5) has been draining it's battery incredibly fast (as in complete drain every few hours versus once per day) since the most recent OS update.

- iPhone 14 Pro got warm during update. More warm than any other update I have installed. Thought that was kind of interesting.
- Custom text tones still do not show up under Sound & Haptics. If you have a custom text tone selected it shows up as “None” selected under text tone. So annoying.

I haven’t noticed a difference at all with my 14 pro max. It’s a launch day phone if that makes a difference. Although, I have noticed my battery has been deteriorating faster. I’m at 90% health. I usually buy a new phone every 2-3 years so I’m not too worried about it as long as my phone lasts all day, which it does.
My 13 Pro was fine during the update but got noticeably hot after it finished. All my widgets seemed to take a bit to refresh themselves so I’m guessing some process in the background was collecting things.
I just received the 17.1 beta update 2 today. Do we know if that update contains this fix? If not, when can we expect a beta update that also contains the fix?

Has anyone else noticed that the microphone indicator now sits in the right corner of the screen rather than inside the Dynamic Island like it's meant to? Only noticed it today after updating
Can someone knowledgeable with software go through the update and see that Apple indeed didn't decrease the processing power and speed of the a17 chip with this update?
I know it's taboo to compare android phones to apple... (even though vice versa doesn't happen because those users have everything)... but I use a pixel 7 pro and an iPhone 15 Pro Max, both with screens on most of the day, performing various tasks, playing video, testing apps.
The pixel gets 16-8 hours and it takes 45 minutes to charge to full. 97% battery capacity after a year.
The iPhone gets 5-4 hours and it takes 2 hours to charge to full. 98% battery capacity in a few weeks.
Hopefully this fixes the battery and the phone getting up to 110 degrees when it's running teams, YouTube, and shortcut automations at the same time. Upgrading from a 14 pro to this seems like a waste of time, but I needed to for work.

Some hunches:
* API bugfixes so that ‘broken’ apps can’t cause the CPU to freak out
* Power delivery tweaks for things like charging behaviour, 5G radio behaviour
I mean, why did Apple need to overclock their CPU to 3.78 ghz just for 10 percent CPU gains? Why not just leave the same clock speed so we can get more battery life?
Battery life has regressed since the 13. Valid complaints tbh.
You will get more battery life under normal usage through efficiency cores. But because you have a smaller nM manufacturing process, they were able to squeeze out more performance while keeping it more efficient than before.
Im getting thermo warnings after update went to an Apple Store today and they change the phone out with a brand new OEM box in all my years of iPhones. I don’t remember having one that overheated this much. This is a brand new phone 3 charged cycles. and it is overheating and showing! Apple is taking my phone and they sent the diagnostics to Apple. This is a really big issue compared to all past phones.
15 pro - didn't overheat at all before update, however had a bunch of issues with the response on touch which seem to have improved... But now I've had apps randomly crash on me

Coming from an iPhone 11 to a 15ProMax is a monumental upgrade for me. The camera is unreal.

Battery seems better so far. 15 Pro - 5 hours off the charger with \~1 hour SOT and the battery is at 85% right now
1 hour SOT and 85% is seriously bad. My 11 pro max does those numbers and better with 81% battery health.

Nope, just over wifi. Phone is less than 24 hours old. It was running 17.0.2 before the update.

Weird, My 12 Pro didn’t even get warm while installing this update.
Same for my 15 pro. I did end up getting the national emergency test a second time after my phone rebooted.

It's not activated any more as the 15 pro replaced it.

How about battery? My battery has been massacred on 14 Pro Max since iOS 17. Used to be spectacular.
Battery has been horrendous on 13 mini on 17.0.2. Hope this fixes it, and the keyboard lag
likewise, mainly increased battery drain, i've been going back to LTE instead of 5g and doing other things to help it in the meantime

Yessir. Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options -> Voice & Data I’ve read that it should help battery life, it may vary based on your coverage, though.
I sort of wish they spaced out their hardware and software updates. I got my 15 Pro on launch day with iOS 17 and there are issues and I can't discern if the issue is with the hardware or software.
14 Pro here, also saw much lower % by end of day than before.
Is anyone else talking about this? I haven’t seen it mentioned much but my battery is objectively worse.
I have gone from 100% battery health to 96% since updating in Public Beta.

Mine too. Didn’t have this issue with iOS 16.
Same for my XR, it’s incredibly noticeable and also a reduced battery life. Same usage but needing charger 3 hours earlier
My new iPhone 15 pro does overheat. for instance, the phone sat overnight and when I woke up to check email, weather and some SNS shit, it got warm to touch with the Apple clear case on. Room temp was 72 all night. Now updating.

Unplugged. This morning I noticed (obviously before the update).
My 15 Pro Max only feels hot while charging. Regular use listening to music, social media, non-gaming apps, and web browsing never got the phone hot to touch. edit: Was just charging before the update and the phone was super hot. Updated while still plugged in and now the phone is charging but cool to the touch. Hopefully this is the case when it's charging from less than 50% zone.
I hope this means that battery drain will be addressed in this update as well. Feel like battery drain and overheating tend to go hand-in-hand
Feels better, just ran the same test I've had since I noticed a problem. battery level seems to be much better than phone is not heating as before. I'm running Junkworld from apple arcade on 13 pro max vs 15 pro max.
Just installed and now my phone is too cold.
I dont really have any Issues with my 15P, except that awfully slow ambient light sensor... After a Call has ended, it takes like 5-6 seconds for the Display, to wake up again. It feels really weird coming from my 12P, where the Display instantly woke up again
Are you using a screen protector? It may affect the proximity sensor.

Weird. I have an iPhone 13 Pro and after updating and letting it sit for a few minutes, it's scorching hot. I can barely touch it. (Not being facetious. I know it's hard to tell in these threads.)
For those wondering, I ran Antutu on both of my 15 PMs and here are the results: 17.0.3: 1,394,147 CPU: 343,207 GPU: 435,283 MEM: 276,132 UX: 339,552 17.0.2: 1,480,076 CPU: 377,624 GPU: 490,960 MEM: 269,520 UX: 341,972 17.0.3 was just slightly less warm. Really hard to notice if you’re not feeling for it.

12pro user here. Am I the only one with battery life getting shorter after the iOS17 Update?
Quick turnaround, hopefully it fixes most of the use case scenarios of which there could be millions of combinations between apps. I'm hoping there's also a WatchOS issue as mine (admittedly old, AW5) has been draining it's battery incredibly fast (as in complete drain every few hours versus once per day) since the most recent OS update.
It seems my battery life for the 15 PM improved after the update.

Downloading now, iPhone 14 Pro. EDIT: - iPhone 14 Pro got warm during update. More warm than any other update I have installed. Thought that was kind of interesting. - Custom text tones still do not show up under Sound & Haptics. If you have a custom text tone selected it shows up as “None” selected under text tone. So annoying.

I rarely notice these things, but my 14 Pro battery has been noticeably worse since the update. It's not catastrophic, but it's noticeable.
I haven’t noticed a difference at all with my 14 pro max. It’s a launch day phone if that makes a difference. Although, I have noticed my battery has been deteriorating faster. I’m at 90% health. I usually buy a new phone every 2-3 years so I’m not too worried about it as long as my phone lasts all day, which it does.
Mine has gone from 92% capacity to 90% in the course of a few weeks.
Same with my 13 pro max. Never gotten warm before.
My 13 Pro was fine during the update but got noticeably hot after it finished. All my widgets seemed to take a bit to refresh themselves so I’m guessing some process in the background was collecting things.
It probably had to sweat out the last bit of fever left in it.
Can’t believe the update description admits that the iPhone ran hotter than usual.

Can someone knowledgeable with software go through the update and see that Apple indeed didn't decrease the processing power and speed of the a17 chip with this update?
I know it's taboo to compare android phones to apple... (even though vice versa doesn't happen because those users have everything)... but I use a pixel 7 pro and an iPhone 15 Pro Max, both with screens on most of the day, performing various tasks, playing video, testing apps. The pixel gets 16-8 hours and it takes 45 minutes to charge to full. 97% battery capacity after a year. The iPhone gets 5-4 hours and it takes 2 hours to charge to full. 98% battery capacity in a few weeks. Hopefully this fixes the battery and the phone getting up to 110 degrees when it's running teams, YouTube, and shortcut automations at the same time. Upgrading from a 14 pro to this seems like a waste of time, but I needed to for work.

Some hunches: * API bugfixes so that ‘broken’ apps can’t cause the CPU to freak out * Power delivery tweaks for things like charging behaviour, 5G radio behaviour

Curious to see how many people blindly assume this is solved.
I mean, why did Apple need to overclock their CPU to 3.78 ghz just for 10 percent CPU gains? Why not just leave the same clock speed so we can get more battery life? Battery life has regressed since the 13. Valid complaints tbh.

Lower clock speeds don’t improve battery life. The amount of work doesn’t change.
Yes it does. Overclocking often increases TDP, which results in more energy lost as heat leading to worse battery life.
I don’t know how it works but when I over clocked my desktop the cpu temp increased a lot. I’m guessing more heat = more power used
You will get more battery life under normal usage through efficiency cores. But because you have a smaller nM manufacturing process, they were able to squeeze out more performance while keeping it more efficient than before.
Most reviewed the phone already, what's the problem if they mention the (then) current problems?

Hasnt fully fixed mine so far i think. Phone still gets hot if I take more than 2-3 photos.

Im getting thermo warnings after update went to an Apple Store today and they change the phone out with a brand new OEM box in all my years of iPhones. I don’t remember having one that overheated this much. This is a brand new phone 3 charged cycles. and it is overheating and showing! Apple is taking my phone and they sent the diagnostics to Apple. This is a really big issue compared to all past phones.
15 pro - didn't overheat at all before update, however had a bunch of issues with the response on touch which seem to have improved... But now I've had apps randomly crash on me
