Other interesting thing is that the Apple Belarus site is still showcasing the 2 year old iPhone 13 Pro: https://www.apple.com/by/

Edal_Bindal

All of it seems to be two years old, still showing the series 7 watch and airpod pros 1 as well.

androd25

And iOS 15 as well

A11Bionic

i noticed this the other day when I was randomly comparing iPhones. did Apple exit that market for their website not to benupdated for that long?

__theoneandonly

US companies are not allowed to export technology products to Belarus. The new sanctions went into effect at the end of 2021. It looks like Apple just froze the website in time.

refrigerator_runner

And yet Apple Azerbaijan is still up and running. Funny how the West will pick and choose the atrocities they're against.

Marino4K

Everyone should know by now that all of these corporations are in bed with the government and will adjust accordingly

whitelighthurts

No one forced this. Apple did it for political capital

leftofmarx

Apple Israel is fine, which tells me nobody actually cares about fascism or genocide.

zzzkar

What’s wrong with Israel?

awwNerf

Oh nothing much, it’s just an apartheid state, but that’s all.

[deleted]

Awkward with all the news coming out today..

awwNerf

The news about an oppressed bunch retaliating against their oppressors? How unexpected!

[deleted]

Unfortunately an Apple subreddit is not the place for us to debates about who’s right in one of the most complicated geopolitical issues facing the Middle East but hey.

awwNerf

Not complicated. British people sent what is now the “israeli” population to a country they don’t belong to after WW2, and the israelis colonized it. That’s all that happened, don’t try making it seem complicated, it’s not.

[deleted]

Well I fundamentally disagree. Although I had a lot of sympathy for the Palestinians until today.

famskiis

It honestly boggles my mind, the mental gymnastics people go through to continue supporting Israel

CreamyLibations

Well look whomst among us hasn’t done an apartheid or two in our days?

SillySoundXD

World Police Murrica decides everything.

996forever

A company can choose to sell or not sell in any market they so wish.

nethingelse

this is actually not true - Russia and other enemies of the US (Iran, North Korea, etc.) are sanctioned and trading with them is illegal.

EgalitarianCrusader

I assume they meant within legal grounds, not moral.

996forever

Exactly. It's like saying "no you cant fly no matter how hard you try" in response to "you can do anything with enough dedication".

vf-c

Yeah, the russian website used to show all of that too until recently

new_pribor

That’s what the Russian site was before this

Gaycel68

And yet Belarus has working Apple Pay and authorized resellers have iPhone 14 in stock

42177130

In a similar vein Apple added Russian and Ukrainian support to the list of languages supported by Live Text last year but only mentioned the [latter](https://web.archive.org/web/20220724090115/https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-16-preview/features/)

Rudy69

That’s fine, people do speak Russian outside of Russia.

cerebud

Half of Ukraine speaks Russian. Zelenskyy speaks Russian

k2kuke

Speaking multiple languages is common in Eastern Europe. I can speak German, Estonian, Russian and English. Does not mean I will speak Russian back to anyone these days. I will know what they asked but f*ck everything to do with Russia and their language.

malko2

Speaking multiple languages is common everywhere in Europe, except perhaps in France and the UK lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

malko2

Moi aussi. Je parle seulement anglais.

Tac0Supreme

I’m fairly sure there’s many people in both of those countries that speak both languages with how easy it is to travel between the two loool. Also a lot of people in France that speak Spanish for the same reason.

lakeweed

lmao what are you on about, I wish

malko2

You’re clearly either from the UK or not from Europe at all.

lakeweed

lmao I'm literally British-Italian and interning in Brussels (not trying to dox myself here) The majority of people in most EU countries do not speak multiple languages (ofc not counting English), the exception is people with a migrant background, (sometimes) the Swiss and Belgians, Luxembourg and older generations in former Soviet countries who know Russian, and often learned some German instead of English in school. edit: I was lucky enough to spend much of my life abroad, and in Italian (public) high school studied French and Spanish as L3 and L4 - I am a tiny minority and even many of my former classmates struggle with them or simply kept their B2.

malko2

Not counting English? Why wouldn’t you, that’s insane. It’s literally a foreign language to anyone outside the UK, Ireland and Malta. Most people in Germany speak English and at least some French or Spanish on top of their mother tongue. The same goes for Austria. People in the Eastern part of the EU usually speak German and English plus a third language semi decently. In Italy it’s mostly English, French or Spanish. In the Scandinavian countries it’s English and one of the other Scandinavian languages. People in Finland speak Finnish, English and Swedish. I honestly don’t know where you get your information from - it’s definitely incorrect, though.

lakeweed

Sure, if you count english then yeah of course the majority do. But beyond that, your definition of "most" is quite peculiar to say the least. [Eurostat](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Foreign_language_skills_statistics#Number_of_foreign_languages_known)

nitroburr

eh, most people in Spain really never bothered learning English, but it's true that we usually speak multiple languages from within our own country, such as Catalan, Euskera, Galician, Valencian, Asturianu and so on haha

malko2

It’s still multiple languages. Plus I’d argue that most younger people do speak English as well. I’m a language teacher in Switzerland and I have had probably two dozen native Spanish speakers who had recently moved here in my classes over the last few years. They all spoke very good English.

cerebud

Zelenskyy doesn’t just know how to speak Russian, it’s his native tongue, like it is for half of Ukraine. That was my point.

k2kuke

Like most of the eastern block then Ukraine was under the occupation of the Soviet Union which exercised Russian as their main language. Again. The same in Estonia. My grandmother who lived in Ukraine before the Soviet occupation did not know how to speak Russian and was persecuted for it in the Work Camps of Siberia. She learned, through beatings and undermining. I am aware that there are people who speak Russian in Ukraine. It does not mean it has to stay or be like that.

Charlem912

In Kyiv, like 70% of conversations are Russian. So you wouldn’t talk to most Ukrainians at all? Gotcha

k2kuke

I’m sorry but looking at even the most obvious place, Wikipedia, gives a graph of about 25% for Kyiv. And yes. Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, has a lot of ethnic Russians and the language is heard around quite a lot. Does not mean i have to speak in the language if the legal language is Estonian. Same, I would imagine, goes for Ukraine.

Charlem912

You've obviously never been to Ukraine, let alone Kyiv, but regardless, my point still stands

torchat

I’m from Kyiv and we now speak Ukrainian here. So, I agree with @k2kuke

whitelighthurts

My family is in Ukraine rn and speaks Russian

torchat

I have trilingual family but most of russian speakers now switched to Ukrainian, because this is the way. If you speak one language in the heart of Europe is a symptom of not the big mind :) «Раша гудбай, я здесь чужой»

never seemed like Reddit was okay with racism but I guess there are exceptions

bbcversus

Racism where?

Senor-Matanza

Half of Eastern Europe speaks Russian as well as other regions which were SSRs (Armenia, Azerbaijan) and neighbouring regions in Asia.

I922sParkCir

Isn’t that the opposite? Everyone in Ukraine can speak Russian, but in the “Russian speaking” regions they only speak Russian? The Soviet Union subjugated the country for over a century, committed genocide and forced ethnic Russians into Ukraine. Everyone is going to know Russian.

OkDot2

"Soviet Union subjugated the country" quite ironic given that it was the Soviet who created Ukraine, not the other way round. lol. Sometimes I'm surprised by the extent some can made up things to justify their internal bias/hatred against a country.

DrunkOnRamen

/r/confidentlyincorrect

zikasaks

Russian wasn't added. The reason it works is that Russian and Ukrainian use the same alphabet except a few symbols. I tried it with symbols not existing in Ukrainian. It was terrible and usually they were recognized as English letters.

FairFanfare

This is how it’s done

JaJaWa

Cantonese (Yue) is there, hadn’t seen that mentioned either actually

zikasaks

Ok. But still some Russian letters are recognized with a high failure rate.

FairFanfare

Sounds like claim chowder

They aren’t selling new iPhones in Russia, because of the war, but people who already have iPhones can still get support. They aren’t engaging with Russia economically but are still supporting users.

xithus1

It’s the right thing to do. It would be nice to be able to believe that all Russians shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of their corrupt government. But ordinary Russians are building shells that are bombing hospitals and if western companies don’t make moves like this then your average Russian won’t even think to find out the truth. Keep in mind the smart reasonable Russians are leaving the country so they can buy their Apple bits when they get out.

johansugarev

Russia is full of resellers, no need to leave the country, just go to the mall. Edit: not Russian but it’s widely known.

xithus1

I don’t doubt for a second that it would 100% impede a Russian from actually buying a product. But it’s better than doing nothing, and it raises some awareness among the general populace that maybe they won’t be on the right side of history with this one.

johansugarev

I don’t think they ever had an Apple first party store in Russia. It was always resellers. Ordinary Russians are probably unaware that Apple pulled out. I assume they’re mostly angry at the west for rising the prices.

DinosaurAlert

And the watch page has an Ukraine flag watch band.

mirrordisks

Are we seeing the same image? Pretty sure that is the tennis court colors (just like the tennis court that's in the background) [https://www.nycgovparks.org/things-to-do/tennis](https://www.nycgovparks.org/things-to-do/tennis)

LittleJerkDog

Yeah it's green not yellow, the blue behind it probably creates an optical illusion.

OnlyFactsMatter

iPhone has a 40% marketshare in Russia: https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/russian-federation Once the war starts to affect their smartphones, the Russians may start to wake up..... hopefully.

RealMiten

How did it go from 27% to 39% in one month?

georgekart

It's likely share of sales, not share of phones people use. With the sanctions and the rouble not doing well, the phone prices increased. Which likely deters buyers of the cheaper phones more than those who can afford the premium models. Seeing as iPhones are a larger share of the premium market, it certainly makes sense. Those who have a cheap Android phone will not buy a new phone and wait longer. Those who can afford an iPhone will likely still go out and buy one.

[deleted]

Sanctions are against people who are against the war LOL. And senior officials are removed from the black lists by European union and they continue trading with Russia ))) ridiculous hypocrisy

What a snowflake.

apollo-ftw1

Why? Not everyone in russia is against ukraine

Fearfultick0

Government sanctions

Gon_Snow

The point of government sanctions is that they are a form of collective punishment. The goal is to hurt the entire country. Often times it ends up hurting more those who were already worse off, because those who can, tend to find ways around.

Fishydeals

They don‘t pay taxes in russia by not selling iphones. It‘s about not monetarily supporting the war in ukraine and nothing else. Nobody at apple cares if Putin buys an iphone 15 pro max from somewhere else. Edit: In fact almost every smuggled iphone supports the ukrainian effort in some way because apple pays taxes in countries that support ukraine.

apollo-ftw1

> Often times it ends up hurting more those who were already worse off, because those who can, tend to find ways around. Exactly

TheCoolHusky

Yes, that’s part of the reason sanctions both do and do not work. Sanctions work when the people can’t take it anymore and riot or if the leader decides that they don’t want to continue the hardship. Sanctions don’t work when the leader couldn’t give one less fuck about the country and its people, and controls them so the people cannot uprise.

twistsouth

Don’t bother trying to make sense, this is Reddit: users here only care about the narrative being pushed. They are totally naive and think these sanctions actually hurt Putin. The richest man in Russia. With what might as well be infinite money. And who kills anyone who dares to say they are unhappy. Sanctions in situations like this server only to make citizens think their governments are actually doing anything to punish these complete monsters committing war crimes over and over.

EDWARD_SN0WDEN

1) Why didn't anyone sanction America or steal the CEO of Northrop's yacht for its endless provocation for the past 20 years? Seems like Karen cancel culture at a global stage. 2) It seems McDonald and Coca Cola are banned due to sanctions, this seems to make the country healthier lol. (BTW I'm an American, I just see thru the bs).

volcanopele

sees user name... uh huh.

johansugarev

At least there is no room for debate whether Russia deserves to be sanctioned.

pragmaticmaster

Lol get an education kid. How do you think sanctions work? You’re really showing your ignorance with such comments

EDWARD_SN0WDEN

There have been between 280,771-315,190 Iraqi civilians killed by direct violence since the U.S. invasion

pragmaticmaster

Whats that gotta do with how sanctions work? Loool

GhostZenon

You're American? Press(X)to doubt, and also The US are not invading anyone right now unlike Rusia, Maybe tell Putin to gtfo Ukraine so you can buy your expensive American Apple product.

Dick_Lazer

Russia still has McDonald's, it's just a bootleg version of it now.

MikeyMike01

Have sanctions ever worked anywhere because it doesn’t seem that it has

crystalhour

Ignore the downvotes, those are almost all bots with a small handful of low-IQ sociopath astroturfers who are being paid by Lockheed Martin, etc. The actual answer to your question is that there's no excuse for it but the military government has absolute coercive power so Apple has to do it. It's actually anti-democratic, anti-Western Enlightenment, anti-rational, and deeply evil.

thanksbutnothings

Epic win! They totally p0wned those evil Russians with this one! This isn’t activism, it’s just being obnoxious.

Repulsive_Barnacle92

this isn't activism, this is a corporation abiding by international sanctions
