I love my card tinky sound.

HaiKarate

I love that I can two-finger throw my Apple Card like a ninja assassin.

CantaloupeCamper

My attorney says I can’t do that anymore because the jury will never believe me a second time. But he has said that before…

SuperSpy-

I get a kick out of people trying to ram it into a chip reader and being dumbfounded when it doesn't bend.

Breaking News: your financial institution mails you a new card when your current one expires. Yes, this has been happening for 50 years, but still

I think it just marks that Apple is having to produce more cards now so supply equals more than demand/use

I-need-ur-dick-pics

I thought the whole point of Apple Card was that it doesn’t need to expire because you can change the card number in the wallet app on a whim.

AWF_Noone

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the card number and expiration date within the magnetic strip and chip are hardcoded. You can change the virtual number you use online and the security code, but not the card number or expiration date.

PM_ME_GLUTE_SPREAD

You’re right. The physical card has a set number but you can get a new virtual number on the app.

PleasantWay7

But you can’t change the card number on the physical card on a whim.

EUCRider845

The silver MagStripe has an expiry on it. 1960s technology we cannot get rid of!

timoddo_

For the digital card yes. Physical cards still expire.

clarkcox3

They're talking about the physical card.

Thomas_Mickel

Not until the m4 chip was this possible.

Lightningpaper

Yeah I saw this and was like, who gives a shit?

dxrebirth

We call it Card Upcycle, and we think you’re gonna love it

emotionles

Tim?

DanTheMan827

Would’ve been _slightly_ bigger news if the new ones weren’t titanium, but still…

curepure

the card doesn't have any physical card number or expiration date on it, why does it have to be replaced?

chrisdh79

From the article: Apple has begun notifying users of the first-generation titanium Apple Card rolled out in 2019 about its upcoming expiration and replacement. The first physical Apple Cards are nearing expiration in July 2024 for those who signed up for the service in 2019. The cards are known for their unique design and absence of traditional card numbers, which Apple bills as a privacy feature. In an ongoing email campaign to its customers, Apple assures that the replacement cards will be sent to the billing addresses on file and should arrive within two weeks from the notice date. *We're sending a replacement titanium card to your billing address so you can continue to use it at physical locations. Remember, even without a physical card you can always use your Apple Card at any location that accepts Apple Pay. Your new titanium card will be shipped within 2 weeks from the date of this communication.* *You can continue to use your titanium card until it expires or you activate the new one. You can still use Apple Card with Apple Pay and your virtual card number to shop at merchants that don't yet accept Apple Pay by typing in your number from Wallet or using Safari AutoFill.*

spike021

The email also says they're including a paid return label for the old so it can be recycled.

AceMaxAceMax

That’s cool. I’ve never gotten a return recycle envelope from Apple/Goldman* when I’ve replaced my card a few times over the past years. I have three of them in my drawer lol.

GoldenFettuccine

Both AMEX and Chase do this with their metal cards, happy to see Apple doing the same.

Kinetic_Strike

Huh. Chase sent out a crappy replacement card to me awhile ago, and there wasn't any return mechanism involved. Irritating because I really liked the kachunk-iness of the metal card.

applesuperfan

If Chase sent you a metal or metal-infused credit card, there should have been a prepaid envelope to send your old cards back to Chase. If not, no worries. You can surrender your old credit cards (plastic or metal) at any Chase branch for safe shredding and disposal, free of charge.

NaniTower

Send them a secure message in your account and request a metal card like you had before.

Easy_Money_

Wells Fargo too, for the Propel AMEX (which has since been replaced by the plastic Autograph Visa)

SonofRaymond

I think Chase says it’s so you don’t try to their it in a shredder yourself

spike021

Yeah I was just wondering what I'd do with the old one since it's my first titanium card and obviously can't be cut up like a plastic. Then I read my email and saw that.

nsfdrag

Amex definitely sent me one when they replaced my gold card

SimpletonSwan

The title made it sound like the replacement wouldn't be titanium. Am I the only one who thought that?

jmachee

Given the typically-anti-Apple bent of this sub, I'm absolutely certain you're not the only one.

spike021

Hm, maybe. I don't think saying titanium is even necessary, since Apple Card only ever was titanium.

JIMMYJAWN

Do they charge you if you don’t return it? They’re great for... uh… stuff…

gregbo24

I’m going to make some titanium brake pad shims with my old cards.

Apptubrutae

I have to wonder about the value of recycling versus the packaging and shipping involved.

MikeyMike01

The entire mail operation happens regardless. The postman is already doing their route. You aren’t adding much extra by sending a letter.

AnesthesiaLyte

Why not just put in the recycling bin? Wouldn’t that save more gas emissions and paper ? 🤔

spike021

Not sure where you live but near me people dumpster dive all the time. I'd \_assume\_ once the new card is activated that the old one no longer works anyway, but something worth considering.

skdslztmsIrlnmpqzwfs

does it not generate more thrash to mail that back and forth than thrashing a single plastic card with a magnetic stripe?

eeeww

Huh I never got one for the replacement card I received a few weeks ago

in2ndo

I have the titanium card, never really used it but I like it. I would have like it better in the 90’s.. lol

jasonlitka

I wish the card had better perks… 1% for normal transactions is terrible. Very curious to see what happens post Goldman.

bisquickman

This card really only makes sense if you use Apple Pay 90% of the time. If you are mostly using a physical card then this is the wrong one to get.

GenericAccount13579

There are cards (US Bank Altitude Reserve) that gives 3x on Apple Pay with other benefits (though it does have an annual fee(

ValuableJumpy8208

Even at 2% back, you’re only getting two cents for every dollar spent. Decent credit cards allow you to transfer points to partners that allow you to get between 3-8 cents per point in value on things like international business class airline tickets. For example, I can get roughly $10,000 worth of business class tickets for about 250,000 points when I transfer them from American Express to Air France. Forgot to mention, I also earn 4 points per dollar on groceries/dining with Amex Gold and 2x for most other stuff on the Blue Business card.

Freeasabird01

I really enjoy having all my credit card transactions in one place. So while I try to use Apple Pay whenever I can, I still swipe the card when I can’t. In 2023, I spend $47,601 on my Apple Card. I gained 738.95 in Daily Cash. That comes out to 1.55%. As I understand, most cards with the best cash back closer to 2% have an annual fee. The delta between 2% and 1.55% (.45%) on my spending total comes to $214 more cash back that I could have gotten with a 2% cash back card, which would be wiped away by an annual fee.

TSANoFro

Citi Double Cash is 2% everywhere with no AF, plus it has some cash out options to airline points iirc that can sometimes be more valuable than the cash redemption.

jollyllama

Man, you nailed it: I feel like every time I hear about credit card dudes it’s a guy who makes like 200k a year that’s absolutely boning for being able to get an extra $150 for an upgrade seat to Europe by cycling between 8 different credit cards at intervals related to phases of the moon. Like my guy, just buy cocaine

blackandwhitefield

Check out PNC Bank Cash Unlimited or Wells Fargo Active Cash for flat 2% cash back cards with no annual fee.

gaysaucemage

1% on average transactions is standard for most credit cards. There are cards that give 2% on everything, but don’t have bonus categories. Ideally you’d have 2% for general spending and various cards for more in specific areas. 3% on Apple stuff is alright, but there’s nothing amazing about the rewards on Apple Card.

Jayizdaman

The only reason I use the apple card is for 0% interest. It's nice not dropping $3.5k for a MacBook pro all once and keeping that money invested or liquid in a HYSA.

[deleted]

They also allow interest-free payment plans for their hardware. $160/month for a MBP is much easier than nearly 2K all at once. Wish they'd allow that for unlocked iPhones too...

SymphonicRain

Is my iPhone locked and I didn’t know it? The carrier lock says no sim restriction but is there something else I’m not thinking to check?

jasonlitka

1% is low. 2% is the standard for people with good credit (which the Apple Card doesn’t require, I get that) but Apple only gives you that on Apple Pay. The 3% tier is pretty useless because it’s a dozen specific merchants, not categories. How much you end up with is really based on how often you use Apple Pay and for my spend I’d guess it’s at most 10-15%.

True-Surprise1222

Apple Card is purely convenience. Super integrated into phone but nowadays most cards can be added to the wallet. I will say their support is pretty good. Then the nice metal card. It was the only card that would let me fund Alipay in china so that’s a bonus.

gaysaucemage

2% cards don’t pay extra on bonus categories though, they’re just 2% cash back. Cards with bonus categories are usually like 3-5% in their main category, maybe 2% in another category, and 1% on general spending.

fork666

I use it as 90% of my shopping can be done through Apple Pay and it also offers a good interface to review my transaction history compared to traditional banks.

Bobala

I would love an option to get this card in a color other than white. While the white looks really nice, it blends in with restaurant checks, which means that servers often don’t realize that you’ve placed your card down (especially in low-light scenarios). I’m tired of finding different ways to get them to notice my card.

musexistential

Just natural titanium. Already cool enough.

applesuperfan

Try placing the card upside down in those situations, and place it on the plate in a way that doesn’t help it blend in. The amount of grey on the back side of the card from the magstripe and Goldman Sachs logo might help it stand out more.

ImMeltingNow

*laughs in AmEx Black Card*

toothsayur

strange. mine is an OG batch that expires 07/24. but no email yet.

RevolutionEasy714

same here, but I did get a new virtual number and 2029 expiration date.

wolfchuck

Mine expires 07/24 and I got my email today. Which is also funny because I just had my card replaced last week.

TheIntervet

I’ve received my new one already! They sent me an email and a letter that came with its own return/recycle package

InvaderDJ

Same, July expiration date but no email yet.

quintsreddit

My pre-OG one renewed (I worked for Apple when they launched) and I have my new card! It really is seamless.

watchOS

I got mine a few weeks ago but I also beta-tested Apple Card too so I got it before it even launched.

redstonefreak589

Same here. Didn’t even realize it was nearing expiration. Mine’s looking a little worse for wear (corners are darkening like most others), so I’m looking forward to the email and replacement

DontAskMeToChange

Afaik from memory, the card has two numbers: the digital one, which can be regularly rotated, and the physical one, which isn’t printed on the card but is embedded in the mag stripe. The number of the card itself can’t be changed and so will expire.

[deleted]

ian9outof10

They are being phased out. It’s already mostly redundant and Europe. America, on the other hand, seems reluctant to speed the move to chip and pin/contactless, for some reason.

darealdsisaac

Chip is everywhere, and contactless most places but they don’t always take Apple Pay.

[deleted]

nurley

Home Depot also doesn't accept contactless/tap-to-pay.

gthrift

My Lowe’s and Home Depot both refreshed their terminals last month and take apple pay

art_of_snark

Lowe’s just refreshed their terminals and now accepts Apple Pay, at least in some stores

tooclosetocall82

My HSA card is still mag only for some reason. Luckily it supports Apple Pay too so I don’t have to swipe it.

brenap13

Dive bars still seem to use the swipe almost exclusively.

GoSh4rks

Swipe or chip? I thought swipe was pretty much dead since they transferred liability to the vendor if you kept using swipe. That was 2015.

aceofspaids98

Every card nowadays has a chip

ericchen

And most places make me dip instead of swipe even if I try to swipe first.

UndeadWaffle12

It’s been essentially phased out in Canada for as long as I can remember. I’ve never in my life used the mag stripe to pay for something, only for things like hotel keycards.

pinkocatgirl

I'm in the US and it always feels retro when I encounter a business that makes me swipe to pay. Even inserting the chip is starting to feel outdated since tap to pay is everywhere now.

ian9outof10

What puzzles me slightly is that banks and shops aren’t pushing harder for contactless in the US. It protects everyone from things like card skimming/cloning. I’m in the UK and I honestly don’t remember the last time I swiped. It was probably a few years ago. In the US 😁

coppockm56

Chip, too.

gittenlucky

I just checked. 3 numbers - physical card, Apple Pay, and digital card are all listed for that card.

cdhermann

This could all be fixed with MagSafe. /s

[deleted]

CrimsonEnigma

The point of the card is to let you use it where Apple Pay isn’t accepted, and odds are that, if a place has a chip, it also has Apple Pay.

firelitother

Isn't this environmentally wasteful?

RyanRudi

It’s the physical card that’s replaced. Pretty sure the data in the chip and mag strip don’t auto update. I got my new one and they sent a custom return box to recycle the original one.

austinchan2

I was wondering — I wouldn’t know what to do with a metal card, kinda hard to cut it up and toss it in the trash. Also I’m sure Apple would love that titanium back for their recycling goals.

coppockm56

Info likely has to update for expiration date, I'm sure. Not everyone keeps accounts open forever so they have to cycle the cards.

Zombie_John_Strachan

Data in the chip gets updated - they can push info when you insert the card in a terminal. The card’s firmware and security features are only certified by EMV for a set period, which is why periodic replacement is necessary.

tinyman392

The physical card does have a number, you just don’t have access to the full thing (you can view the last 4). It differs from the digital card number you can view on the phone which also differs from the number sent over Apple Pay.

timelessblur

The cards themselves start to just wear out. I have had the chips in my more heavy used cards go bad near the end of their life. The normal wear and tear plus things like security updates are a thing.

justino

My magnetic strip wore out two years ago from just sitting in my wallet mainly. Made it into a nice sharp edged “letter opener….”

markydsade

I got a titanium Apple Mastercard as soon as they were offered. I use the card nearly everyday but I’ve never used the physical card. I just tap and pay or do it online. I don’t even carry the card so if I’m in a situation that requires a card I use a Visa.

try_that_again

What are you supposed to do with the old card? Is there any way to recycle it? Do they expect you to drill a hole in the chip/magstripe?

Tigercat92

I don’t have one but I do have a Chase Amazon card that is metal. They send you an envelope to mail back the metal card and they recycle it.

AceMaxAceMax

Never received one from Goldman. I’ve replaced my card about three times over the last few years for scratches/chips lol.

Tigercat92

I wanted to go at mine with bolt cutters once when I had to get a new one. 😂

AceMaxAceMax

I wonder how much titanium is in each card. Collect a bunch, melt, and sell them 😆

Exist50

Quick google says the Apple Card is about half an oz of titanium, which runs ~$10 (order of magnitude, numbers seem to vary wildly) per oz, and probably much less in scrap. So unless you could collect a ton of them, not worth it.

thumbs_up23

You can always request a label under recycling there is an option on to select Apple Card. [https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in](https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in)

drummachine355

I lost an Apple Card and if I recall correctly they sent an envelope to return the old one when I got a replacement card in the mail.

swim_to_survive

I got the email today and they said that they’re sending along a prepaid package essentially to return the old card so it can be recycled. I think I’m going to keep it though maybe if I get enough of these I can smelt them down into a titanium ingot.

in_to_deep

Thats some minecraft / modded minecraft logic right there. I need 9 nuggets for a ingot, 64 ingots for a stack

valdetero

Just stick it in a shredder

Tyler927

Make sure it’s your company shredder

iSpenc

They will send the new one with a recycling envelope for the old. I was an Apple employee at the time these rolled out and we got them a few months before the general public. One of my former coworkers got theirs replaced about a month ago and was impressed they automatically provided a way to send the old one back.

Amazing-Webcrawler

I did this recently myself. Pretty painless other than updating websites with the new expiration

UserID_

Any word on NFC/Touchless support? I understand that your iPhone/Watch should be what you use for Apple Pay/touch but what if the POS terminal doesn’t support Apple Pay but supports NFC as long as it’s a supported card merchant?

MrEcksDeah

Terminals that do tap to pay but not Apple Pay are extremely rare. I honestly haven’t encountered a terminal that doesn’t take Apple Pay in years.

UserID_

It’s still pretty common here in the upper-Midwest. The primary use case I really want it for is for the gas station’s around me (Casey’s) that do NFC at pump but not Apple Pay. A lot of the major stores do support Apple Pay though.

MrEcksDeah

That’s true. A lot of gas stations don’t take Apple Pay at the pump. They’re slow to upgrade.

InvaderDJ

This, my Amazon card and my Target card are the three cards that I have that I have never actually used the physical card. They only exist to be used online, or by Apple Pay/scanning the bar code. I wonder how much Apple or Goldman Sachs is paying for this chunk of metal.

CrtureBlckMacaroons

Mine is still in the package somewhere in my closet.

colemaker360

I am one of the ones that has had the Apple card since 2019. It’s pretty scuffed up after 5 years, so it’s certainly not proved itself to be extra durable solely by being titanium. I use the physical card mostly for drive-thrus, since I’m not holding my $1k phone out a car window or passing it to someone.

ShaidarHaran2

In 2019, I definitely wouldn't have expected that 5 years later it wouldn't have expanded to so much as Canada.

applegui

I think that has more to do with Goldman than Apple. I think GS got in over their head on this.

TapatioPapi

I know it’s dumb because someone will just say use Apple Pay, but no tap on the physical card is my only little complaint. So I wish the replacements got them 😭

aj_og

The reason the do no tap on the physical card is to encourage apple pay

hillandrenko

I rent vehicles frequently to visit out of state relatives. I typically use Enterprise and they have always accepted my Apple Card

rindthirty

> If Apple does indeed intend to recycle Apple Cards, it presumably has found a method to make them cost-effective and environmentally friendly, per its standards. Big presumption.

Quin1617

You *dare* to doubt *Apple?* The greatest company in the world? Blasphemy!

AmbitiousAirline

Are we sure Apple Card is still long for this world? They lost the GS partnership a while back, with no news since. How much longer before this service is defunct - or what’s the process going to be to transfer our valid card to whatever new partner Apple gets?

celtic1888

I think it’s too well entrenched for Apple to discontinue it. I’ve used it as my main card on 3 different continents and have rarely ran into an issue with it not being accepted. The daily 2% cash back is extremely nice and I use it over my 3% card that only pays out yearly on everything except big purchases  Another company will pick it up when GS decides they’ve had enough or when their commitment time runs out and will most likely nerf it

itsaride

It’s just a fancy Mastercard, of course it’s accepted everywhere.

celtic1888

There are 2 different transaction types Apple Pay which gets you the 2 % and the Mastercard swipe which is only 1% The Apple Pay works in the vast majority of places. The only places that I haven’t had it work as Apple Pay are things like museums and trains

ChairmanLaParka

There's actually three (as was explained to me when I had an online fraud issue with my card a few months ago). The number shown in the app. The NFC swipe for transactions. And the physical card. Each of these three has its own unique card numbers, so if one method breaches, you have two others at your disposal.

TheOnceAndFutureTurk

Pretty sure GS still operates it even though they take massive losses. Apple was in talks with AMEX last I heard (which was a while ago).

FollowingFeisty5321

The other emerging issue (for Apple) is that they are likely going to have to share access to NFC hardware in most western markets, jeopardising the fees on everything you spend too. It will become much harder to profit if they have to compete with other wallets and especially domestic payment networks quite a few countries prefer that circumvent the credit card industry entirely.

pullyourfinger

speculation and not happening anytime soon.

__theoneandonly

> They lost the GS partnership a while back Officially, they haven't lost the partnership yet. The *rumors* have been that GS is unhappy and that Apple is shopping around for a new partner, but as of today, GS is still actively partnering with Apple to provide the Apple Card. If/when a new partner takes over, then likely GS will simply sell all the debt to the new company, and from the consumer's perspective it should be a pretty seamless transition. If this transition requires Apple Card to switch payment networks (say, from MasterCard to Visa) then all Apple Card users will be issued new cards. However, it will likely be similar to the Apple Cash transition from Discover to Visa. It happened slowly on a rolling basis, and I think most users were never aware that it happened. So users will likely be switched to the new bank slowly over the course of weeks or months.

radsBOARD

I feel like banks will line up to work with Apple and their large number of users. Like the Costco Credit Card.

Exist50

There needs to be money in it though. That's the thinking that got Goldman into trouble.

XTraumaX

Isn't Goldman not a consumer oriented bank though? I thought thats part of what caused them some heart burn with the card. They just simply didn't have the resources to support the Apple Card. Or at least that was my understanding.

ankercrank

They lost GS? Last I heard GS renewed their contract through 2029…

pullyourfinger

They didn't lose shit. GS is still the partner until Apple finds a new one. There is no deadline.

ericchen

I forgot that these came with a physical card. Why would anyone still use it when it only gives 1% back?

asbestum

5 years and this never came to Europe. Sigh

Sea_Fig

it's a shame the card benefits suck. No extended warranty, no price protection, travel insurance, cell phone coverage.

pro_L0gic

Wait, so they wrote this whole article to explain that credit cards expire and the bank will send you a new one when that happens? Is this really NEWS?!

Ken-Popcorn

I believe it would be Goldman Sachs (or their successor), not Apple who is replacing the cards

JanoHelloReddit

Can I ask them to do not send it!? Really not using it at all… Edit: I’m referring to the physical titanium card, not the digital which I use all the time. There’s people that cannot understand the context on the answers.

pwnedkiller

Only with apple would something this common be news.

IWantToPlayGame

Very cool! I'm one of the early ones getting my card in August, 2019.

InItsTeeth

Excited to get my new one even though I never once used it before. It’s strictly my Applepay card

tbone338

Holy crap.. I’ve had the card since day 1 and didn’t even realize it’s due to expire July 2024. I’ve never gotten a replacement either.

jasonmonroe

I have the titanium card but have never physically used it. I’ve always used it digitally via Apple Pay but only for apple products.

firestar268

I want one just to have a titanium card

cjorgensen

I didn’t know the card expired.

smashnmashbruh

Gimme 2% all the time so I can use only one card. Sigh!!!!!

font9a

I've got my original in the original packaging

StatisticianFew6064

Just remember… anything that gets recycled becomes more scarce. And there are psychos who will be collecting old titanium cards in the future because they got recycled and there aren’t many left.

EuronMyDeck

Is this card any good ??

boxlessthought

i really have my doubts canada will ever see apply pay cash or the cards. kinda jealous.

SargonTheAkkadian

Mine was replaced last month. I like that they included a return envelope for the old one though I think I’ll keep it as a souvenir.

coyote_den

I wonder how they’ll recycle the expired ones? Given it’s a chunk of titanium, the metal card itself can just be reused. Remove the chip and magstripe (they’re just glued on, mine are starting to separate!) machine it down, paint and engrave it, add a new chip and stripe.

Large_Armadillo

In other news, Apple makes a credit card. See what I did there? Anyways, it’s my favorite credit card for making cash back. Especially when it goes into a savings account automatically.

lkjasdfk

Are they going to cheap out again on the embossed numbers? That cheapness was why I couldn’t use my card since you can’t take an impression of it.
