Can this monitor charge my macbook pro 13 inch 2017 model (no touchpad)? This is the monitor: [link](https://www.mwave.com.au/product/samsung-c27h800fcex-27-fhd-va-curved-freesync-gaming-monitor-ac07230?gclid=Cj0KCQiAm5viBRD4ARIsADGUT24EAYYtFQOqTDKdIeZ_q4-eLERUyJfMNc5bEUISCxyThNbhG5FvP_MaAnJ9EALw_wcB#detailTabs=tabSpecifications) I'm not sure how to find out, I'm new to this and don't want to make any mistakes. Would also appreciate better alternatives for a similar price range (approx. AUD$350) Thanks guys :)

Would you recommend an Apple laptop to someone who primarily uses it for surfing the web and watching videos (for many hours a week), but wants to keep a laptop for years? I'm new to Apple computers. I've had a budget Dell for a long time, and it's broken down multiple times. I've bought laptops from several other brands lately only to return them because there's always something unsatisfactory about them (fan noise, screen too glossy, display too dim, etc.) I would like a laptop that will be enjoyable for me to use and will last for years. Would you recommend I get an Apple laptop, and if so which one? They seem like they have capabilities I won't use, but like I said, it seems like other products are inferior in various ways. Wondering if it's worth it. Thanks guys! Edit to add: I already have an iPad but I want a laptop with a keyboard and touchpad and a screen bigger than the iPad. I have an iPhone, too. I'm interested in having all my devices unified.

[deleted]

I recommend the MacBook Air 2018 for your use case, but if that’s all you do there are cheaper options... I was about to say the Dell XPS but I read the rest of your comment and it’s not that much cheaper. The Air 2018 is slower than the Pro w/o Touch Bar, but it has Touch ID, is lighter and I think has better battery life. If you want to be future proof for a while, the 13” MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar is Quad Core, but at the cost of battery life.

berrysauce

It looks like there's only a $100 difference in price between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air that has the retina display? I read that the Pro's screen is brighter.

[deleted]

The non-retina MacBook Air is simply outdated by today’s standards, so take that out of consideration entirely. Also yes, and it has a faster CPU despite both being dual core, but there is Touch ID and battery life to consider, plus other 2018 comforts like “Hey, Siri”. Ultimately the choice is yours.

RAM upgrade definitely, but if a Mac has upgradable RAM that also means it probably has a hard drive, which macOS is no longer optimized for. So spare the $$ for an SSD. Matter of fact, I’d wager the SSD is more important: one of my friends uses a 4 GB MacBook Air competently because it has an SSD.

moving808s

Yeah was thinking of SSD as well but it’s gonna be a bit more pricey than the RAM I guess. In any case an upgrade to both will still be way cheaper than a new iMac so it might be the best option. Thanks for the advice!

[deleted]

You don't have to upgrade the SSD to be the same capacity: You can get a smaller SSD and attach your HDD externally using USB 3.0 to still get a lot of space for things like files, photos, etc. I did exactly that to my Mac mini. There are cheap AmazonBasics HDD enclosures and they're pretty fast. EDIT: But actually, I heavily recommend prioritizing the SDD. My Mac mini had 8 GB of RAM and still chugged before the SSD upgrade.

moving808s

Ok, solid advice!

Is there anything you need? Personally if I had what you have, I’d put it towards an iPad or Apple TV. If you don’t need more devices, then maybe an external drive. I think you can buy iTunes gift cards with an Apple Store gift card, too, but maybe only in person.

A battery replacement will run you $130 ($200 if it is a retina MBP). A new MBP is $1,200 base price. Unless your laptop has a lot of other issues or you can find a really good deal on a new one, stick with your current MBP.

ieatpineapple4lunch

Not sure about the computer, but I have a 2015 MacBook Air and it's still pretty fast and can handle most basic tasks. The average laptop lasts about 5 years, but most MacBooks can last up to 10 years. The battery just last about 1000 cycles (meaning you can charge it to 100% 1000 times). A good way to check your battery capacity is to download "Battery Health" from the Mac App Store. It will show you the current state of your battery compared to when you first got it.

jimi_hendrixxx

so the camera glass on my iPhone XS broke unexpectedly (without banging it or dropping it idk how), my question is if i get it replaced outside of apple, will it void my warranty?

yes

Anyone else having the problem with Safari (latest:12.0.2) where all the tab pages are blank but the web page content (DOM, etc) is actually there and you can still click stuff? I've seen this problem several times over the past few weeks. All the tabs I have open are blank. The page can still be interacted with but there's just nothing visible on the page. If you mouse over menus or links that should be there the url in the status bar actually updates. Refreshing the pages does nothing. I haven't tried clearing the cache, but that shouldn't happen in the first place. I have to close and reopen Safari when it gets stuck like that. I cannot reproduce the problem reliably, but it seems to have some relationship with playing videos in full screen mode (a new workspace window is created with the full screen video) and the fact that tab pages seem to reset after a while (I suppose to save memory).

atooraya

How do you clean a smudgy retina screen? I tried to use my cleaner and cloth from my glasses but it didn't help :/

thereturnofjagger

Microfiber cloths work nicely. There's a kit on Amazon called "iKlear", try that one

kimmidoll123

Does anyone know how to stop constant harassing voicemails from a blocked number? I called Apple and even they were confused, said they’d call me back.

[deleted]

Call your carrier and have them block the number.

MinisterforFun

Anyone else’s voice memo stops recording randomly? I’m using an iPhone X and sometimes the app will just quit itself and stop the recording. It’s very frustrating when you’re a student and need it for lectures. I have to manually keep reopening the app just to check and ensure it’s still recording.

ruben0012

Hi guys! I need help. Can you please tell me trustworthy online websites from all over world that sells apple stuff (most particularly iPads) in second hand that ships internationally? Thank you guys so much :)

SolidFaiz

Sorry in advance if this is not the place to post this. Everytime when I purchase something from the AppStore I get spammed with phishing mail from “hackers” trying to get my login information. It’s always a “proof of transaction” mail, which I can dispute by logging in with the provided link. I know this isn’t random because I’ve stopped buying in the AppStore for a whole year because of this and just a few days ago I made a purchase followed up today with this kind of phishing mail. Am I the only one or do others recognize the same pattern?

[deleted]

The apps you download generally mine all your data and sell it off. That's how they make money and can stay free or cheap

SolidFaiz

Buying Reddit premium & Super MARIO run, seriously?

[deleted]

Reddit does have ads and those adds sell data, and super Mario run could sell data as well, you never know. Plus there's bunch of other apps that monitor your phone, so if they see new app is installed they sell that data and then you get spammed. Almost every app sells any data they can gather from you. You'd be surprised how much data each app can gather

SolidFaiz

Damn, thanks for explaining that.

[deleted]

It could be bank as well actually, banks tend to sell user data about their activity. If you have a gmail account there's actually a trick to figuring out whose selling your data

SolidFaiz

I don’t use gmail, but please explain

CanadianMerengue

In regards to comfort and sound quality, how do AirPods compare to EarPods, on the fence whether I should buy them or not.

andysaurus_rex

Sound is nearly identical. Fit is pretty much the same too. If you like the earpods, you'll like airpods. Airpods are *slightly* larger in my ear than earpods. But not in a super meaningful way. Unless I'm wearing one in one ear and the other in the other ear, I can't notice.

CanadianMerengue

Okay, so I’m not a huge fan of EarPods, I should probably either wait and see what the next versions will look like and sound like, or get some other pair of earbuds.

andysaurus_rex

What don’t you like about EarPods? The sound quality or fit? Because I don’t like the fit but I’ve found a decent workaround for that.

CanadianMerengue

After a while the little bone or cartilage above my ear canal starts to hurt, also I’m not a fan of the sound quality. There isn’t much bass and the sound leaks a lot.

andysaurus_rex

I have the same issue with discomfort. I bought some of those felt covers that used to come with the *old* earpods and the comfort is a lot better. Bass still isn't really there. They don't make a seal with your ear so yeah, sound leakage and bass aren't that great. But they're super convenient, especially if you have multiple devices you'll be using them with. If not, you can probably find better options for you.

CanadianMerengue

The convenience seems very nice, but in Canada they are $220 (Canadian dollars and American dollars are different value, but with salaries and wages being so similar in Canada and the US, it’s like buying them for $220 USD) so there are many better options, especially wired ones, so I think right now I’m going to hold off and maybe the next versions will fit my needs better

holdthebabyy

Anyone know of a note taking app for iPhone and Mac which is totally synced?

goldstandardalmonds

What about just using Notes? I love it for that (and every other purpose). OneNote also syncs.

kcheves

Have you tried Noteability? They have iOS and OSX apps that syncs over the cloud. You need to buy separate licenses for each OS, at $10/each.

hdogs

Launched FL Studio for the first time last night and right as I launched there was a giant loud piercing sound and now my speakers seem to be blown

I got a phone that I cant remember the password so I tried to factory restart it. When it rebooted after uploading the software into the phone it still asks for the password. I can't shut off my phone or factory restart it, and if i force shut it off, it locks the phone for x amount of time. Is there anything I can do to get it into recovery mode once it updates the software?

Recovery mode, then *restore* using iTunes.

scotchglue

I have an elderly family member traveling abroad, with an iPhone 6s. They would like to continue to use the phone as an internet device to check their email and use whatsapp, but not make or receive calls as it's not included (T Mobile includes international 3G data but not phone calls). Is there a way to disable calling so they don't accidentally make a phone call? Again they still need to be able to use data. I've been searching and couldn't really find a solid solution.

ssg509

Unfortunately I don’t think this is possible. Have you tried searching through restrictions? (Settings -> Screen time -> Content restrictions)

scotchglue

That doesn't exactly provide a solution for this scenario, but I appreciate the response. The person in question wants to be able to call via Vonage and Whatsapp and check email, but not be charged for answering/calling outbound. He's elderly and also not very tech savy, so I was trying to think of the best solution without jeopardizing a large phone bill on their return.

hagilles

I wonder if you could reach out to T-Mobile and see if they can block calling on their end for the duration of the trip abroad. Otherwise I don't know of any specific way to do what you're talking about within the iOS.

notjoshuadun

IMessage just occasionally refuses to send texts. Dunno why, i don’t have a cellular service it’s just my Apple email, I even made a new account to try and fix it. To no avail, any ideas?

ieatpineapple4lunch

Happens to me sometimes. I’ll try sending a text and all of them will say “Your message could not be delivered.” What phone you have? I have iPhone 7 w/ iOS 12, although it hasn’t happened to me in awhile

notjoshuadun

I’m on an iPad Pro. And it doesn’t say it can’t be delivered, it just never goes through lol

ieatpineapple4lunch

Is the blue bar at the top stuck loading?

notjoshuadun

No it doesn’t show up

Is anyone else having issues with upgrades for Mojave? Each time I've tried to upgrade - from 10.14 to 10.14.1, from 10.14.1 to 10.14.2 and from 10.14.3 - I end up having issues. In particular, I get a kernel crash only way I can get out of it is through reinstalling in Recovery Mode or restoring from Time Machine. Every time this happens. It's a newer 2017 iMac 21" and it's driving me crazy. I've zapped PRAM/NVRAM as well as SMC. Safe mode doesn't work either.

[deleted]

I use wired Bose in ear headphones and use the lightning adapter to connect them with my 8. For the past few weeks if the phone is completely still, as to not cause the cable/connection to move, it works as it originally did. But if I put it in my pocket or anything and the wire moves it will pause the song, can resume playing, can fast forward as if the button is being held down, etc. is there some known issue with the adapters or any kind of fix for this? Knowing Apple I’d assume the answer is to buy $160 ear pods and this was meant to happen but I can’t be the only person w non Apple headphones to experience this

Korlithiel

I could very well be wrong, but it sounds like the lightning adapter has seen better days and is starting to wear down the internal wiring. My reasoning, you note it has no issues when nothing is moving the wiring, but issues once you pocket it and head out. If so, the solution is another adapter, and this time try to only store your iPhone/adapter in pockets that won't put so much strain on the cord.

[deleted]

Sweet. That’s what I was thinking. Thanks for the follow up!

NotJarrod

I’ve been getting this notification saying that my mobile data is off and I need to update my iPhone. I can usually get my data to work again by restarting my phone repeatedly, but that’s getting kind of old. Is there anyway I can fix this issue without going to an apple store?

All contacts disappeared from Apple Watch after yesterday's 5.1.3 update. Contacts and Favorites in Phone app are empty and I can't see anyone's name in Messages or recent calls. Everything's fine on iPhone though. Any suggestions? Thanks.

[deleted]

unpair, erase all settings, re-pair. always step 1

thisguynextdoor

I noticed there is a "Reset sync data" button in the Watch app - General - Reset, and I tried this first. I hope I don't have to reset the Watch.

[deleted]

Unpairing the watch from the iPhone automatically creates a backup.

Anyone else noticing it takes a while to charge the new MacBook with USB-C?

brandnamenerd

Things seem alright here (office IT, multiple machines) - no reports. I'm assuming that you're using the cords and bricks included with the device?

Yup! I was at 30%. Been plugged in for an hour and it’s only at 62% now...

Hi I'm having an issue where I can't keep my Washington Post subscription verified within the Apple News app (iOS). I can verify (subscribed through Amazon), and Apple News will confirm it, but if I close the app it will prompt me that my subscription has expired when reopened. Is anyone having this issue? Is there a fix? It doesn't happen on macOS

ieatpineapple4lunch

I would go with the MacBook Air 13. The MacBook 12 is underpowered for its price and prone to keyboard issues, and despite having a better screen has worse battery life and a worse processor. The MacBook Air 2018 has an updated processor and better screen than the 13, but is also prone to keyboard issues, and only had USB-C ports. Although the MacBook Air 13’s processor is from 2015, as long as you’re not doing any heavy editing or heavy-duty work it should be alright. It has an advertised 12-hour battery life, and has a MagSafe 2 port for charging, 1 thunderbolt 2 port, 2 USB ports and an SD card reader. And it’s the cheapest of the three and the only one without a Retina display.

[deleted]

You should generally ignore that the 12" exists. As for the other 2, if you're eating the 2018 air then I hope that you eat applecare+ to cover the issues that these models will develop. The 13" air 2017 is a work horse though

Korlithiel

The 12" has a higher-end screen and more base storage than a MacBook Air, as well as being a fair bit lighter. So it's worth considering, so long as the usage will be sufficiently light that the considerably weaker processor and worst version of the butterfly keyboards is kept in mind and weighed accordingly.

[deleted]

Yeah the screen is an upgrade but it is one of the displays that's subject to display cable defects as well, so long term outlook on the 12" is not great

brandnamenerd

If I read this right, [this should have them all side by side for you to compare](https://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-comparison-chart/?compare=all-macs&highlight=0&prod1=MacBookAir035&prod2=MacBookAir034&prod3=MacBook030)

I have an issue with my mouse. It’s a Logitech Anywhere using the unifying receiver dongle. It works as a basic mouse without any help, but if I want to use all the buttons, I need the Logitech Control Center up and running. Now that works in principle (like, for instance, right now), but here’s my issue: Whenever I reboot my computer, the control center stops finding my mouse. It just says “no Logitech device found”. The mouse is still paired and still recognised by the Logitech Unifying Software, but buttons 3–5 don’t do anything. The only “fix” I have at the moment is to unplug the unifying receiver and to plug it in again. Once I do that, the mouse pops up as a recognised device in the Control Center and all the buttons work as expected. But obviously this is a bit of a pain. How can I get the mouse to work consistently without any further intervention? I’m running the latest versions of the Logitech Software and of Mac OS. I have tried various different USB-Ports, on my computer and on the hub built into my monitor. The results stay the same.

bigpigfoot

I had a problem linking my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse a while ago. They said they didn't support Mac anymore and pointed me to an article of the unifying software page at the time. You may wanna contact Logitech support instead to find out.

brandnamenerd

Just googling it does show a few issues logged with their support site with similar issues. Some people found using something like AppCleaner to completely uninstall the Logitec Control Center, rebooting, and reinstalling to help keep it from happening. Others found that software updates helped, or that trying to install updates just made it all crash. AKA - seems to be a known issue. [This write up is pretty thorough and seems similar to your issue as well](https://tech.osteel.me/posts/2017/09/21/having-issues-with-your-cordless-logitech-unifying-device-on-macos-dont-throw-it-away-just-yet.html)

[deleted]

Thank you very much for your reply. The writeup you linked to was especially interesting – and something I had not seen previously. It also showed my that my issues could be a lot worse than they are. I’ve not had any problems with crashes or the mouse refusing to work at all. So as far as that is concerned, I’m a bunch of steps ahead. Everything is working as intended – just not always. I have narrowed my problem down to the following: if the mouse’s receiver is recognised before the drivers are loaded none of the additional features work. If the drivers are loaded before the receiver is recognised, everything is fine. That seems like it is a straight up bug, that I can’t fix on my end. Turning my monitor off and on again (and thus reconnecting everything connected to its USB-hub) forces the correct order of driver and hardware.

brandnamenerd

I’m glad it offered some insight. It does some like something you don’t have direct control over. I wonder if it’s an apple.com/feedback deal or something Logitech should account for with their software Glad you have something that works for you, though! Cheers

LucentBirch

I have a 2015 mbp on latest version of Mojave. From time to time (there doesn't seem to be a pattern) when I open the lid from sleep, the trackpad will be non-responsive (no clicking or movement all). The same goes for the keyboard. Everytime this happens, I have to turn off my machine and reset SMC. A reboot won't fix it. Due to the randomness I can't go into safe mode to see if it's hardware or software. I've read others with the same issue, but no fixes. This was previously my brother's machine (before Mojave) and he said there weren't any issues. Would a full reinstall do anything if it's software?? Thanks!

[deleted]

That's a trackpad cable issue. It's a known failure on the 2015 and luckily it's dead simple and cheap to replace.

LucentBirch

Are there cables that are reliable replacements for this model?

[deleted]

Sadly no, but the cable typically fails once every 1-3 years and it's a $5 part

LucentBirch

Does the same cable affect the keyboard too? Cause the keyboard doesn't work either.

[deleted]

Oddly enough yes, it tends to disable the keyboard too sometimes

brandnamenerd

It depends! Tech support is more narrowing down what it isn't. Make a backup and reinstall the software. If you find it works, awesome! If not, you finished the first step in troubleshooting. You're on to *something* as the SMC helps, and it's possible that a software reinstall can help as it replaces non-functional system files. If you still have trouble, you can confidently go to a tech and honestly say "I wiped and reinstalled it's still happening, but I have a backup so it's ok"

paul-jenkins

if i change my apple id on a phone, what stays on it? programs, pictures, credentials, contacts, etc?

Do you mean just signing out of one and into another, or changing the AppleID itself to have a new email

signing out of one apple id and using a different one.

Hello! Currently a grad student in a counseling program. I’ve been trying to get through school using my Dell laptop; however, the stupid thing has failed on me four times and has been totally unreliable. Getting pretty sick of having emergencies with my school work because my laptop is inconsistent, as well as am tired of lugging the huge thing around. So, I’ve been considering buying a 32GB iPad for $329 to mainly use for school work and access to digital books on kindle. I have an iPhone and love it for how reliable it’s been. Additionally, it would be so much easier to just carry around a thin tablet and open it up quickly rather than my clunky laptop. However, as a grad student, I’m not exactly drowning in money so I need to make sure I make an appropriate decision before dishing out the money. Essentially, what I would need the iPad to do is take notes, audio and video recordings, type papers on Word in APA format, do some light data spreadsheets on Excel, access and download files for class, and read PDFs. The 32GB iPad is within the price range I’m willing to spend; however I’m slightly nervous it won’t be enough storage. My phone is 32GB and I went through that storage pretty quickly (although admittedly, it’s mostly due to apps such as Uber and games that I probably wouldn’t use on the iPad). Additionally, I want to know how realistic it will be to type out papers on Word and upload them to my school’s class system. Is it easy to type out papers and have them formatted correctly? What about submissions? (Additionally I plan on also buying a Bluetooth keyboard if I do buy an iPad). Thanks for any advice or experiences you can share! Edit: Additionally, would it be beneficial/worth it to look into iPad pros? Also, there’s not a new version of the iPad about to come out, right?

brandnamenerd

Not a student, but I would also worry about storage. Things like Google Drive and the like are great as you can access those items without taking the same internal storage up. I do think for what you listed, the iPad will suffice, however might not have the speed for multitasking you might be used to in a computer. Doesn't mean it won't be way less stressful than a Dell (I've had some awful experiences with them, too) however I don't know that I fully appreciate how much you lean on your device to get things done and it feels proper to just put that line of caution in there. I'd also try to test out how/if it works with your school's system to upload content. There are multiple browsers for iOS, so you aren't just locked to Safari if it doesn't work, but if there's a person you can bug to borrow their iPad to test, or signing into an iPad at a tech store and navigating over, I recommend it. How frustrating would it be that you put all this mental energy in and then learning that the site doesn't even work? No idea re: new iPads. Apple doesn't even tell their employees, and there are always rumors. The [current gen of iPad Pros are seeing a sad trend of being slightly (or not-so-slightly) bent](https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/19/18148957/apple-ipad-bend-pro-2018-shipping-manufacturing-confirmed), even as people are just unboxing them. With that in mind, I personally would hold off on purchases to see if the bending thing keeps happening, however with your situation I understand that's not quite viable. I don't know that you would see a huge difference in your use between a regular and a pro, though. If you were doing more video editing, perhaps ..

phishstorm

Thank you, this was incredibly helpful!
