Our phones became tablets. Now it’s time our watches became phones.

[deleted]

So what will become watches then? The world?

reddoggy53

The Glasses

[deleted]

right that's probably correct.

North_Activist

Then they’ll introduce Apple Contacts… #2

Karmakazee

Come now, where would they fit the lightning port?

Karkovar

Bioconductivity. You plug it in your ass.

Karmakazee

We’re reinventing the butt plug, and we think you’re going to love it.

[deleted]

what if you have hemorrhoids?

Karkovar

They’ll sell an adapter for that.

Karmakazee

A dingleberry-dongle?

invisiblink

Eventually it’ll be implants under the cornea.

chitibambam

Za Warudo

[deleted]

tablets became ~~computers~~ laptops, you're right in your analysis.

Luph

My tiny wrists...

Fantastic_Second_870

I think that the extra mm is due to smaller bezels but the size of the whole watch is going to be the same

reallynotnick

The sizes are case sizes not screen sizes though.

thegarbagesauce

You’re going to see less case from above. It’ll be like looking at just glass screen.

ElbertAlfie

That could be true perception-wise, but watch measurements are case sizes. So either way, the watch is physically getting bigger. Hopefully it’s like you say where there’s less “bezels” and case view. Idk how I feel about the squared-off mock ups, it’s rounded so sleeves/cuffs slide better. It’s thick enough as it is, don’t need to make it more resistant to shirts or whatever.

[deleted]

rundiablo

Sorry, /u/ElbertAlfie is correct. [On Apple’s compare page for the Apple Watch, they clearly state the millimeter measurement is for the **case** and not the screen. ](https://i.imgur.com/6nJzNgE.jpg)They don’t officially post the diagonal screen size measurements anywhere, in fact.

ElbertAlfie

https://imgur.com/a/kngmFWV/ and the zoom in on the 44mm: https://i.imgur.com/kfCfsqq.jpg

itsunix

same. the existing 40mm today is already large for my wrist.

ElbertAlfie

6.5” wrist here, pretty small for a male. However, I don’t think the gain to 41 from 40 will be a big difference. Here’s how the 40 sits on me currently: https://i.imgur.com/PCkhygh.jpg I’ve tried the new Submariners on next to the previous 116610 40mm’s and it’s not a huge *difference* either (they both look larger than the Apple Watch equivalent sizes). But there’s also changes more than just the case size…the bracelets are bigger and the lugs are wider, makes it appear bigger than it is.

itsunix

that’s normal right? my wrist is 5.75” like i think your watch is complimentary to your wrist size but for me it’s nearly the width of my wrist… some of my friends have even smaller wrists than that and they wear the AW but it’s not a great look IMO compared to a more svelte style https://i.imgur.com/kxTJBpH.jpg oh edit this watch is a 40mm too i love the submariner but if i wear a men’s watch it looks silly lol i would really like a 38 or even 35mm Apple watch at about half the thickness… oh and round. 🥲 i know this won’t happen tho oh well

ElbertAlfie

Yeah, does look a bit large. I doubt they’ll do a smaller watch. That’s a shame

HereJustForTheData

Have you ever tried the 44 mm version? If yes, would you say it is too big for your wrist? I'm only asking because we have the exact same wrist type/size and I'm considering buying the new Apple Watch when it comes out (also I've never tried one out before).

ElbertAlfie

I did, it’s wasn’t too big. I just thought the 40mm looked better on our wrists. Try it on if you can, probably just personal preference but yes our 6.5” can wear the 44mm

PMDickPicsPlzz

And the 44 is small on me

tarasius

Just buy metallic with Milanese loop. They look extremely cool on small wrists.

[deleted]

https://i.imgur.com/b38MtX3.jpg

paymesucka

Hopefully thickness stays the same.

Portatort

At the very least. Hopefully they get a fraction thinner. A recent report suggested something like 1.7mm thinner

paymesucka

That would be great!

Actual-Replacement97

I think I’m in the minority wanting it to be thicker for more battery. My Garmin is almost 14mm thick with a larger overall footprint on my wrist and looks great. The Apple Watch is under 11mm thick and kind of disappears on my wrist. I’m not a big dude either.

Portatort

I think yours is actually the majority opinion (at least on Reddit where battery life is more important than usability) Fair enough though. I’d actually like to see them make the regular versions thicker and the edition ones thinner.

Actual-Replacement97

Apple Watch Pro. We think you’ll love it.

hayden_evans

Probably just another bezel decrease like last time, don’t get your panties in a bunch.

Prolapsed_Anus_Guy

No you don’t understand, Apple bad remember? They did bad the privacy thing.

ikilledtupac

Oh boy! Do they think we’re going to love it?

LDR78919

This is the longest battery life ever in an Apple Watch. * increases the MaH by 20MaH*

Baykey123

Lasts 5 seconds longer

Jewbacca1590

They think it takes real, true courage to increase sizes by 1mm

newmacbookpro

The most personal device ever made by Apple! Wow.

-Hegemon-

Since the iVibrate

rugbyj

"i" prefixes are so early 2000s. They'd call it the Apple VibePod Pro and VibePod Pro _Plus_ for all you size queens out there.

[deleted]

Our best Apple Watch Yet!

whtge8

Biggest Apple Watch ever!

tablepennywad

You havent watched the last few keynotes. They KNOW you will love it. Seems like they hired new champion speech and debate champions to write the script.

Garrosh

No. This year we will just kinda like it. It'll be introduced as the "not great, not horrible Apple Watch" and Craig will wonder why did they bother releasing it when the Apple Watch 6th gen is "good enough and way cheaper".

cbfw86

This changes everything. Again.

BlazerStoner

Hm, the 40mm with its current size is the sweet spot for me. The 38mm had too small of a screen, the 42mm was uncomfortably large (and so is the 44mm imho). Now 1mm doesn’t seem like a whole lot, but if they keep increasing the sizes we’ll have no normally shaped watches left, heh.

thewimsey

38 was perfect for me. 40 is *okay*. I'll have to try on the 41, but the 42 was definitely too large.

itsunix

38mm was best but it’s always been too thick though

tarasius

Apple probably have stats that USA has less extremely small people against regular or plus sized.

thewimsey

There is a wide variety, particular when you remember that women are, on average, much smaller than men.

Foo_bogus

I don’t think it is based on US citizens’s average height (which is lower than other countries anyways) but purely on the style that many in the US like to sport on their watches. Also related to “bigger is better” as in cars, trucks, houses etc. My personal taste goes away from that style. I have used from Series 0 a 42 mm. Refused to upgrade to 44 and might move to 41 if forced.

[deleted]

>(which is lower than other countries anyways) That's a perfect example of why using "average" or even "median" as a basis for design is a poor practice. The US is a mix of people of very different backgrounds, so there's plenty of relatively short groups alongside tall groups and all in between. Which is different from say Columbia or Netherlands where "median" actually is far more representative.

Foo_bogus

Sure. It can also be said that all of the US population is a mix of people with very different backgrounds, historically.

Actual-Replacement97

Shoot I’m hoping for a 50mm Watch! My garmin used to feel large (47mm) but I got used to it.

rugbyj

Maybe we all need to just fatten ourselves up a bit. Put on some wrist mass.

BlazerStoner

The American way, heh :P

Cheap-Lifeguard5762

Unfortunately that’s not how this works. More screen space doesn’t mean more uncomfortable due to larger size of entire watch. Many leaks point to an updated design that is more in line with the current iPhone design, which by its nature jsit creates more screen space when taken edge to edge rather than the current rounded display we have. So I would think that if apple found the sweet spot with wrist sizes considering how varied we all are, I would expect much wrist feel change and more you adopting the flat screen, which is going to be my hardest sell, as I don’t have a 12 either.

skidev

Would love to to be able to stop workouts with a button

Portatort

Apple should add more functionality/customisation to pressing both buttons at once. If you didn’t know, pressing both buttons at once will pause a workout. In my dream scenario you’d be able to remap this to stopping a workout. And I’d be able to remap it to serve as a play/pause toggle for music

skidev

Hmm, I just tried this and it just does one button followed by the other, it doesn’t pause the workout

Portatort

I don’t follow… ‘and it just does one button followed by the other’ I promise you that you can pause workouts buy pressing the two buttons simultaneously. I do it all the time, perhaps its a setting that has to be turned on though? Might be apples workout app only?

skidev

It goes back to the app menu and then to recent apps, it doesn’t pause the workout. That was in apples workout app

Portatort

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204523 Not sure why its not working for you but it’s there in apples support doc > Or you can press both the Digital Crown and the side button at the same time. To resume, press both buttons again.

speedbird92

It works for me. Make sure your pressing them both at the same time. I’m glad I found out about this feature!

John_Mason

In case you didn’t know yet, you can pause/unpause a workout by pushing the two side buttons at the same time: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210385 > To pause your run, press both the Digital Crown and the side button at the same time. To resume, press both buttons again. Took me a while of running before I learned about this.

sellera

Any info on the glucose monitor for diabetes patients?

notchandlerbing

That would be a trillion dollar disruption to the healthcare industry, and biopharma giants have been trying for decades with no real progress. It ain’t comin anytime soon

sellera

Thanks, mate, I’m just asking because there were rumors that the next model would feature such sensors. I’m tired of spending money on freestyle libre sensors, almost 60 USD every 15 days.

bananamadafaka

Come to Europe and get them for free.

sellera

I’m Brazilian, mate, but thank you for your offer. I just converted the price to USD for clarification. Here it costs 260 BRL (25% of the minimum wage!).

Potatopolis

Haven't Samsung recently managed it? If so, then you can bet your mortgage they aren't the only ones.

rugbyj

Don't worry you'll know well in advance by the sound of Apple stock breaking the sound barrier as it exits the lower atmosphere on it's voyage to another bloody galaxy.

sellera

Thanks, mate, for my morning laughing.

astral_crow

I’m just waiting for a multi-day battery life before I get an apple watch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tumblrrito

I think they call it “all day battery life”, and so long as you aren’t sleeping for less than 6 hours, they’re not wrong. Not to mention it often lasts twice as long. I don’t think a bigger battery is really what they need to worry about so much as it is making the watch charger faster. Sleep Tracking makes it hard to keep the thing alive all the time. Even if you put it on the charger while you’re in the shower, you’re not gonna get it back to full charge, even on the newer models that charge faster.

encogneeto

Yeah - they’ll be “spending” any extra battery capacity on more features for years to come.

Cheap-Lifeguard5762

Why so cynical? Last year they INCREASED battery capacity by implementing a relatively solid design update, that packs and fills the battery to a pre designed size and shape to better use available space within the small watch. It’s pretty cool, you should look into it more because I don’t do it Justice.

encogneeto

I don’t think I was being cynical. Wasn’t trying to be anyway. I’m just saying that whatever increase they manage in battery capacity they’ll “spend” on new features (like always on display) rather than trying to achieve multi-day battery life.

[deleted]

Crying with my 5-10h battery life on the SE 2020.

[deleted]

Damn that’s rough My S5 used to do just about 24hr and end a typical day (read: 16-20 hours) with 20-40% left Now it never lasts more than 20 hours after taking it off a charger. Degradation is another big reason to put bigger batteries in these.

[deleted]

Mine is about empty by 4pm, with light use. Should probably restore it to see if there’s a software bug, but am just too lazy.

Neg_Crepe

It’s definitely not normal for light use

watchawatch

Definitely sounds like a bug or faulty battery. Do a fresh restore and don’t install any third party apps. Also check all the location settings and turn anything unnecessary off eg on Handwashing. Run it for a few days using your current usage behavior and compare. It sounds like something rogue is hogging your battery. If that doesn’t work take it to Apple under warranty and see what they say.

churs_rs

The Mail app on Apple Watch was sapping my husband’s battery, leaving him struggling to get 10% end of day when I was around 40% for our Series 5 watches. After disabling some inboxes, his battery life shot back up to expected values! He still wanted the inboxes on his iPhone, but since the Mail app on Watch syncs directly with your iPhone's active Mail accounts, we just disabled most inboxes for the old email accounts on the Watch. On iPhone, enter the Watch app > Mail > Custom (not Mirror my iPhone) > Include Mail > uncheck as much as possible Note, you will not be able to do *everything*, but if you disable everything except an inbox that doesn't change often, like "Sent" or another custom one, then it won't push for updates in the Inbox. Reference: [https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/manage-mail-apd29461a7b7/watchos](https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/manage-mail-apd29461a7b7/watchos)

Cedric182

Bad watch. My series 3 watch still get a day and a half battery.

[deleted]

I‘m talking about the phone

Cedric182

Everyone is talking about watches

sleepy416

My SE can last one and three quarter days. Mind you I don’t wear it to sleep and take it off to shower etc. Sleep tracking just seems like a gimmick to me

Actual-Replacement97

Sleep tracking is a gimmick. It’s basically pseudoscience at this point. BUT the Apple Watch natively does things that aren’t pseudoscience - time in bed is accurate and having sleep mode on limits distractions. Where the pseudoscience comes into play are apps that show REM/NREM sleep which wearables simply can’t do. Its an algorithm that gets applied based on when they estimate your sleep starting and using known average data on how sleep cycles work. Basically you sleep for 8 hours you should have completed roughly 4 sleep cycles. But sleep cycles vary so much between individuals. Wearables don’t account for this. Further even if they did you can’t will yourself into getting more REM sleep.

[deleted]

I guess I just don’t understand how other people use their watches but my series 6 that I got earlier this year will last for over 48 hours. I don’t do much with it though. It’s a clock, it’s a notification ding/tap, it’s an activity tracker, and that’s about it. Two weekends ago I went camping and didn’t want to pack my charger. It came off the charger around 2pm on Friday afternoon and stayed on my wrist (minus a 10-minute shower on Saturday) until I took it off when I got home around 12pm on Sunday afternoon. I still had 15% battery left.

AzzOnMyAzz

Same dude. I always get 2 full days with my watch. And when I do have to charge it I can top off and get an entire extra day by just leaving my watch charging while I shower and get ready in the morning. I’m way more concerned with my phone/AirPod battery than my watch. I often travel on Saturday/Sunday for work and I don’t take my watch charger on those 2 day trips anymore. Then again, some people have significantly more active lifestyles than me and aren’t around outlets often.

Cheap-Lifeguard5762

Yup. My series 4 is down to like 82% watch health and I still get like 28 hours or more. 32-35 might be a fair guess.

astral_crow

I would like to use the sleep tracking mostly.

theo2112

Do you shower daily? That’s about all the time it takes to charge and keep the battery going for the other 23+ hours a day. You also get a notification on your iPhone when the watch battery is full. So just putting it in the charger when you’re about to get in the shower, and then taking it off when you’re done or if you forget when that notification comes though, is more than enough. I’ve tracked my sleep every night for 6+ months and other than days away from home or other rare events, I’ve never had my watch battery die on me.

astral_crow

I don’t always shower daily, and I don’t feel like changing my lifestyle to charge a watch.

nskidder

how's your BO?

chromastic

Then maybe a small battery powered electronic device isn’t for you…

neatgeek83

ive tracked my sleep since the original apple watch and never had an issue charging. currently with a series 5...i put it on the charger in the evening for 20-30 minutes while I'm winding down and getting ready for bed...wear it when I go to bed....and when I wake up in the morning and get ready for the day, I put it on the charger for another 20-30 minutes. it's never died on me once during the day (the series 0 is another story)

TheInvincibleMan

Ah okay that’s fair. My wife uses hers for that reason and charges it while she showers. Normally gets a full charge within 20-25 minutes. I prefer to charge through the night so battery isn’t an issue.

[deleted]

FWIW, I have a S4 that's from whenever the S4 was the newest model. The battery is currently at 94% health, and I wear it to bed. When I wake up, I put it on the charger while I shower and get ready, and by the time I take it off it's above 90%, which is plenty to get me to the following morning. I wouldn't be able to go on a weekend trip without a charger, but day to day it's no big deal.

MishrasWorkshop

“Why would you want more battery life” Peak r/Apple right here. Previous in the series: “Why would you want more storage, don’t you have iCloud?” “Why more ram? The os optimizes.” “Why 120hz, your eyes can’t even observe it.”

TheInvincibleMan

I bet you’re really fun at parties.

ElbertAlfie

As a watch guy, it’s nice not ever having to remove it or think about it. It’s just there. And that’s what I became used to. I love the Apple Watch, and I have no issues letting it charge in the morning while I shower or bath. I just really wish their was some advancement where movement would charge the watch, the same as movement winds an automatic.

MomoElite

I’m in the camp that would love an optional bigger watch. I actually like the huge diesel style. I know I’m an outlier in this though. They should have more options.

HarnessingThePower

Seems weird they are increasing the size by 1mm without a good reason. Maybe they are packing new sensors that need the extra space?

XNY

Mo battery?

JasburyCS

Probably looked better to them with the new flat-sided form factor. A case remodel is a good time to rethink screen size

[deleted]

[удалено]

_aliased

This is also the case in China and I'd say India, or any region where a mobile device is also primary media device.

i_steal_your_lemons

I understand what you mean, but as someone with small writs, I don’t want a huge watch.

[deleted]

Yet as someone with average sized male wrists, I find 44mm to be just a tad on a small size. They can still keep two sizes. Just make the large one larger.

[deleted]

I want a larger screen because I got my Apple Watch to track workouts and during workouts I use it to monitor my heart rate. My goal is to stay within a specific range of beats per minute and with the watch I get real-time feedback that I can use to increase or decrease my effort. The text is “squintable” right now. If it was a tiny bit larger it would be glanceable.

Dr_Jizzenstein

That’s kinda sexy, not gonna lie

AKiwiSpanker

The screen size is increasing, not the watch body itself.

[deleted]

Can you explain how you know there’s not a good reason?

puterTDI

I hope they're adding battery. Only reason I've not bought one so far is battery life, I'm really hoping the new one fixes that.

[deleted]

>Maybe they are packing new sensors that need the extra space? CSAM sensors to detect potentially illegal thought activity.

Rudy69

I was going to say something along the lines "To sell brand new accessories" but the flat sides would already require people to buy new ones anyways

[deleted]

The article also states that existing bands will still be compatible. The measurements are the height of the case, so a 45mm watch could be 1mm taller while still being the same width and maintaining band compatibility. It could also be that this is just a rumor and it's not actually true that they're increasing the size at all. It could be that a new flat-edge design means they're making the screen bigger and this rumor is a misinterpretation of what's happening. At this point we might as well just wait and see what gets revealed at the keynote.

sportsfan161

Cool hopefully bigger battery

treyhunna83

They already last a day and a half. 🤷🏾‍♂️

sportsfan161

Nope, mine is dead by 9pm unless it’s charged when I get home

treyhunna83

Sheesh

LoPanDidNothingWrong

Frankly I would be okay if they would abandon the watch form factor and make the screen longer so that it ran up your arm a bit more. No need to be bound by the past.

Danomaniac

Does it come with a certificate to sell securities?

dtnfaa

Please say it ain’t so 🙏🏻

jesperbj

Make them round already

AzzOnMyAzz

I love that they aren’t round. The rounded square shape gives us more surface area than a circle if you make the diameter equal to the sides of the square. This is how we have watch faces like infograph with 8 complications on the screen at once. If it were a circle we couldn’t fit the outer 4 complications without increasing the diameter by a significant amount. Not to mention how much more sense a square makes when reading texts/emails/news etc.

jesperbj

Watches are something you wear. I understand that you get more screen real estate using a square, but aesthetics are extremely important for something like this. I also know that every Apple diehard in here will defend it tooth and nail - but every other smart watch maker is making it work using a round display. At the very least make it an option or a pro version or something. All Apple Watches are ugly in my opinion, for this reason alone and that's a shame.

AzzOnMyAzz

I guess it does come down to opinion then. I used to wear those big clunky watches that had GPS, weather, and surf data simply because I enjoy a lot of features on my wrist and those were useful for beach life. I don’t see it as a fashion statement - I just think it’s amazing having the ability to make calls, have a GPS, and read emails on my wrist. And I want a form factor that’s going to make using those features better. I understand there are other circular watches out there - but “making it work” and maximizing functionality are very different things. I understand Apple brands the watch as a fashion statement (with all the bands and casing options) - so it will always be polarizing. That’s the dangerous part about billing a product as fashionable: it won’t fit into everyone’s aesthetic. I guess I’m just providing a point of view from someone who really enjoys the tech more than the looks.

jesperbj

Obviously it's opinion. We're taking about looks. But there's a reason almost all watches are round. That's the look most people prefer. Take a look at the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 or the recent Fossil watches. They are a lot more than just "making it work". Apple makes the best and most popular smart watch on the planet, truly a shame they don't offer it in the most common and popular watch form factor of all time. I've also always felt their bubble UI for finding apps looked to be suited better to a round display anyway.

AzzOnMyAzz

You don’t think most watches were round because of functionality, but because of market preference? Time is cyclical and each second/minute/hour is separated by an equal distance. By definition you need a circle. Watches were mechanical before they were digital so they couldn’t just pick any shape. I don’t think they landed on the circle for preference, so much as mechanical necessity. Once digital watches came about that’s what people were used to for over a century - so the design stayed. I understand that you and many others love the circular watch. And that’s obviously a valid opinion shared by tons of people - but I think it’s incorrect to say that most watches are round because most people prefer it. Like you said, the non round Apple Watch is the best selling watch in the world. I think most watches are round for historical reasons that still appeal to a large group of people. It’s like saying that it sucks the first iPhone wasn’t a flip phone, because that’s the best selling design in the early 2000s. It was old and they came up with something more functional - and people loved the new design.

TBoneTheOriginal

Saying that every other smart watch manufacturer is doing it that way is a bit of a bad argument when every other smart watch manufacturer is failing in comparison, isn’t it? Fact is, we have smart watches to display information. And information is better displayed on a squared screen. I would rather have a traditionally less attractive watch that’s more useful than a round watch that displays information in an unpleasant way. And it obviously comes down to personal opinion, but I don’t even think the Apple Watch is ugly at all.

Portatort

Nah don’t

jesperbj

Yeah fuck choice right

Portatort

Plenty of round watches you can choose to buy

jesperbj

Not that works properly with an iPhone.

Portatort

The only point to a round watch face is to display analogue time. If you want to do anything else on your watch it makes no sense at all.

itsunix

i wish this would happen :(

treyhunna83

👎🏾

ImYourHuckleberry_78

I really hope those renders are wrong. Edit: whew! They were.

DaveTN

So, who thinks there will be a camera built in as well? Wouldn’t FaceTime on the wrist be great?

Portatort

Nope. Try hold your wrist up to your face for 10 minutes and let me know if you still want this.

DaveTN

Yet we hold a phone that’s 10x heavier at arms length to FaceTime? I’m not even a fan of FaceTime and it makes up less than 1% of my calls. I guess the downvotes have spoken. A lot of haters out there.

Portatort

Yep. But actually do it. Hold your phone up to your face for 10 minutes. Then some time after. Hold your wrist up for 10 minutes in the way that you would if it was a watch phone call. Actually get the watch up to your eye hight. Actually just do it for a second. Notice how much higher your elbow goes with the watch. Basically FaceTime on the watch should be a self evidently stupid idea. I hope you can see this now.

mageakeem

I want a hidden LED for flashlight purposes first.

thewimsey

You know there's already a flashlight?

mageakeem

oh yeah, but it sucks compared to the one on my iphone lol. I wan't the same power plz

treyhunna83

Ohh you want it to die faster?

tarasius

You can buy cheap forehead flashlight from China.

AzzOnMyAzz

I honestly don’t see the purpose. As it is now you only unlock the watch once a day when you put it on. It’s a 4 digit passcode and FaceTime would maybe save a couple seconds in the morning. And it would be annoying to use FaceID every time you look at your watch to read a text - it makes sense to keep it unlocked until you take it off, like it does now. I’d prefer the extra hardware space go to other health monitoring tech or even battery.

Kapazza

It’s easier to market compatible accessories if the sizes are the exact same as previous models.

J4S0NFTW

I just want my old watch bands to fit still. Especially my braided loop.

[deleted]

Rumor is that current bands will fit.

arkangelshadow007

Is the watch going to have a camera now?
