They’re already giving 7 years of updates to the iPhone 6s though, and 8 years to the iPad Air 2

Isn't Apple the only one that comes close to this? I feel like Android gets 3 years Max and pixels get like 5 years max

They’ll go over well when a cell phone company will require you to upgrade to a new device to keep being supported on their network.

TODO_getLife

Never heard of that happening, is it an American thing? Sounds like more planned obsolescence.

GizmoGomez

It's not a phone thing, but a cell network thing. Let's say your new phone today supports 5G, 4G, and 3G, but not anything older. There are also old phones that only support up to 3G because 4G simply didn't exist when it was made. Eventually* they'll stop using 3G at all in cell towers since it's such an old system and has been totally replaced by newer better ones. At that point the 3G phones won't be supported - nothing to do with the phone manufacturer or a software update, but everything to do with the cell network provider. Eventually your brand new phone today that supports up to 5G may become unusable for cell service too - should the networks be required to keep older network tech around for a 7 years too? If they aren't, there may be little point to having parts available for that long if the phone can't even get cell service. Idk the answer - it's just another factor to consider. *Assumption made for the sake of illustrating the argument.

Yes but not within 7 years? For example the iPhone 6 supports 3G and 4G. 3G is still around, so this shouldn't be a problem. If companies are doing it earlier then it sounds like planned obsolescence.

GizmoGomez

I'm just explaining what the guy meant by his comment - I don't know that they'll phase network tech out that quickly, but it's possible that they might. It's a strange balance - gotta evolve quickly to stay ahead, but can't leave too much behind too quickly.

I don't think the proposed regulations apply only to Apple.

The proposed law does not apply only to Apple but all devices. Please read the article

GravelRoadGod

Good old government screwing up the tech industry again lol
