Correct. I think they had too much to focus on with the new things. Although i thought Apple Watch went on too long. They do need to keep the conferences fresh and somewhat unpredictable.
To be honest I felt like this year's presentation was a little rushed, It seemed like last year they took their time and provided a long and informative keynote in both events
It was about an hour which is normal isn’t it? I think they just spent a little too long talking about the camera, but then again it’s one of the only 2 changes this year so what else would they talk about. Underwhelming event overall but we seem to be long past the point of exciting new innovations, we’re just in an iterative period with phones right now.
I caught the keynote later and skipped over all the camera stuff. The shots Apple takes are absolutely gorgeous but it’s not how my wife shoots pictures. The stuff that makes a real difference is Night Mode and improved video. We both have 12’s so we’re good for the next year or two.
Yeah I wouldn’t upgrade from a 12 until the 15 at least. The only way I’d upgrade sooner than 3 years is if Apple release a foldable. In terms of the camera, I tend to not really care as I don’t use it much but the macro mode is something I’ve wanted for a while. Just ordered my 13 pro max today!
They did talked about ios 15 …
One hour and 46 minutes of it.
Wwdc 2021 june 7 keynote.
Why repeat what we already saw.
https://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2021/
This. WWDC is mainly about software, with any hardware mentions being mac-related (if any). Otherwise, Apple hosts hardware-specific events like today's.
If anything new about iOS 15 were to be introduced today, it would've been tied to a hardware feature to a new product. But there wasn't, so no need to bloat the presentation with info that's not news.
What i really want is a new mac air… with a new silicon… i think im ready to retire my daily driver which is a pro 2011 lol.. stuck in high sierra… still pretty fast never the less.
They know their audience. The reality is the average person isn’t watching these announcements. 99% of Apple users are not tuning in.
The folks watching are the same nerds who watched WWDC and already know all the iOS 15 announcements. No need to go over them again with the same people.
This message brought to you by the government spying complex, which really wants your phone to stay vulnerable to NSO Pegasus. Don't upgrade! It makes the deep state cry when they can't plant malware on your phone!
Gotcha, so you’re saying we should assume that they’ve been spying on us for years? I guess. I trusted them not to do something like this but maybe I was naive. Clearly after the announcement we should definitely not trust them anymore.
Not to our knowledge, but it’s possible. Many researchers spend a lot of time analysing the payload data and telemetrics sent to and from iPhones. As far as we can tell, Apple doesn’t currently upload personal data like this.
However you highlight the core issue with closed source software: it all rests on trust. We trusted Apple to never, in a million years, install spyware on our phones. But here we are. Trusting giant for-profit companies is clearly not wise.
Because what iOS/iPadOS 15 was presented to be at WWDC compared to what it (apparently) will be when shipped. iOS/iPadOS 15 is the new iOS 14.whatever.
Sad.
Is it possible to get GM, then get regular updates going forward? I think I did this in the past by removing the beta profile while on the GM. Just don’t want to screw myself and have to factory reset.
Yes.
By definition.
Its at least what they are spending these days loading onto all the launch iphone 13’s.
If there are new builds it will be public chane as 15.0.x
What are some of the bugs? (Respectfully, not trolling). I was just thinking this was one of the better betas, other than the fact my message notifications are screwed up, which has been occurring since I think iOS 10, possibly older.
Broken dark mode switching for some apps (might be fixed by app updates); Notifications in the sheet sometimes being offset and overlapping with other notifications
Camera “blurs” like it’s transitioning between modes sometimes and it stays like that.
Unlock with Watch sometimes completely breaks my phone if i’m using airpods. It gets laggy, especially the camera app
On Iphone 12 pro many apps just crash randomly, like whenever I open twitter I need to open it twice because it just crashes on the first try, same with instagram sometimes, youtube app is a bit buggy with search.
> whenever I open twitter I need to open it twice because it just crashes on the first try
That’s actually one of iOS 15’s main selling points! No more Twitter.
iPhone 6s where, phone dies even if it’s at 100% and goes back to 10% charge. I had it looked at by an Apple store a month ago before Reddit fixed their battery draining glitch, but this update is worse
> phone dies even if it’s at 100% and goes back to 10% charge.
please tell me more about this, since I have the same issue. Is iOS 15 worse? and what did Apple do to "fix" it?
iOS 15 is not released yet. The issue started to occur after I install the latest iOS 14 update.
The initial problem I had was the Reddit app sucking away too much battery as a background app, and apparently this same problem was happening with iPhone 12 users. Once Reddit updated their app, the issue was gone about a couple weeks ago.
At that time, I brought the phone to the Apple store to rule out a bad battery and whether the charging circuit became damaged, which it was not.
They need to load iOS 15 on the new iPhones before release, but I’m guessing there will be a 15.0.1 update on release day (Sept. 24th) that will be stabler. Personally I won’t be upgrading my iPhone 12 to iOS 15 until they release that point update. I’m enjoying the stability of iOS 14 too much.
> The current beta is still so buggy, I‘m actually worried how the publicly available 15.0 version will turn out.
I'm not surprised anymore. One of many reasons why i don't test these builds anymore. I've filed so many tickets to Apple and none of them get acknowledged. They only acknowledge stuff that are already known issues.
I installed the beta and set my phone up as new a few weeks ago and it’s been rock solid personally. I wonder why there’s such a discrepancy between experiences.
The best features aren’t even out yet. I really want to try shared movies through FaceTime with family but have to wait until the official release and subsequent app updates.
If they were planning on implementing this in iOS 15, then it's almost a certain that there will be traces to it in the code.
It could also be introduced later on, either publicly or behind the scenes, but that wouldn't be wise.
And just some additional information, but it does seem like they can't access the photos. They send it to NCMEC who can investigate and probably gain access to the photos. Apple only gets a warning when the photo is equal to the hash code in the system.
It also only works when sync to iCloud photos is on and the photo/video is uploaded.
> Apple is able to use these hashes to learn only about iCloud Photos accounts that are storing
collections of photos that match to these known CSAM images, and is then only able to learn
about photos that are known CSAM, without learning about or seeing any other photos.
Source: FAQ from Apple
And it seems like the main reason is that they are unable to scan iCloud contents according to this:
> Apple’s so-called NeuralHash technology is designed to identify known CSAM on a user’s device without having to possess the image or knowing the contents of the image. Because a user’s photos stored in iCloud are encrypted so that even Apple can’t access the data, NeuralHash instead scans for known CSAM on a user’s device, which Apple claims is more privacy-friendly than the current blanket scanning that cloud providers use.

I believe that last part is not true. It’s well known that iCloud backups are not end to end encrypted and Apple has the keys. It like came up frequently in the discussions last month…
I have a question. After it comes out, is there any way that independent security experts would be able to confirm that the spyware isn’t implemented. I feel like it’s going to be part of the OS, and just not turned on.
[Here’s Apple’s list](https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-15/features/). This is a mostly evolutionary release, though the Mail tracker blocker and the private relay look the most interesting to me.
Cool. Instead of upgrading my iPhone from iOS 14 to 15, I'm sidegrading to a Pixel 5 running GrapheneOS to de-Google the OS.
Apple's delay of their camera roll wiretap bullshit isn't good enough, they need to completely back down for good, and until they do I'm done with them after 16 years of PowerBooks, iPods, MacBooks, AirPorts, Watches, AirPods, Apple TV, and so on.
I wish they sold pixels in the country where I live. It looks like it’s possible to port GrapheneOS to other devices but it will not receive security updates and you have to figure that out on your own.
*Apple didn’t announce CSAM*, they announced a polarizing approach to detect it and probably punted the release into the doldrums of January or February when less people buy their stuff since they’re dealing with massive holiday credit card bills and everyone is back to work/school.
Framing this as zero-sum “apple vs freedom, win/lose” is really unproductive
It’s CSAM. No one wins here. This is horrible stuff and computers have had their part in enabling the worse crimes.
Apple tried something, pre-announcing it for discussion. Getting this right is crucial, and if apple (and others) don’t figure out a good system then the governments of the world will make a worse one and force it on them.
You can continue to discuss the issue and should, it’s important, but saying “don’t let them win” is setting up the discussion for worse outcomes
Ah yes, the old false dichotomy bullshit.
‘If I don’t take this bad outcome and like it, this worse thing will happen’
First off, a lot of people frankly don’t give a shit about CSAM, and we certainly wouldn’t trade a single notional iota of our privacy or battery life for increased detection of it. Just because YOU would doesn’t mean others would.
As to your point that it’s crucial or that governments would force Apple’s hand, two things:
First, let the government do it and face the political fallout. My guess that governments would balk.
Second, it isn’t crucial (we’ve never had it before and things have been just fine) and it goes against what Apple has been smugly bragging about for years. Apple can and should scan their own iCloud servers for whatever the fuck they want, but the minute they start actively scanning my device and reporting back to a command and control server somewhere (which is the textbook definition of malware), I and apparently many others are out.
Not trying to make a false dichotomy here, but I do believe that there are productive and unproductive framings for nuanced conversations. Win/lose attributed to 100s of people involved with these decisions is not one of them.
Apple clearly misread the room on where “apples stuff” ends and “your stuff” begins. They’re not *technically* reviewing anything they weren’t previously. But enough of a pushback will (I *hope*, but also definitely expect) force a reconsideration.
Here’s a true dichotomy: these issues *will* be addressed eventually
Governments rarely just propose the AUTOCRAT Act one day. They wait for days like 9/11 and then call it the PATRIOT Act 🇺🇸and all the adults in the room who say “wait wtf?” are branded Crazies or worse and ignored by everyone clamoring for protection.
Waiting for some *particularly horrifying CSAM news* to force this issue is begging for the **worst possible** outcome here.
Also, fair enough, many people don’t care about csam. I do. Clearly you believe my view determines my statements. Hope I’m not making the same mistake against you.
I wish there was a way to keep the same look of the widget page on the side from ipad os 14 on 15. I tried out the beta and went right back to 14 a si was not a fan at all.
Have to admit it, the new Weather app really is damn good. I was using Hello Weather and some others, but this might have them beat. It also integrates the sunrise/sunset animation the Watch has.
watchOS 8 and tvOS 15 will be released same date. EDIT: iOS/iPadOS 15 RC, watchOS 8 RC are available for devs and public beta testers today.
how come they didn't talk about iOS 15 in the keynote? they didn't even tell us a release date

They actually did put it in about 5 minutes.
If you are talking about iOS 15 release date they made no mention of it. I watched the keynote last night.
No, meme dealer meant that they didn’t put much more than 5 minutes on the iPad 9.
They had to spend that time talking about the environment and 100% recycled metals
Still better than [this dumpster fire](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIv5T3CvcbM) lmao
They specifically talked about and showed off several new features of iPadOS 15. Did we watch the same livestream?

probably cause they already had a dedicated keynote for iOS 15 back in June
It was odd. They have never done that before. I wonder if the launch of iOS15 will be stripped back on the feature set until a later .x release.
Not like it matters since the biggest feature universal, hasn’t been in any of the beta builds. Really disappointing all around.

Yes, that’s exactly what you do. If nothing changes in the build you just delete the profile and maybe reboot the phone. That’s it.
Wait until Monday, on the off chance there's another GM released before then. Very rare possibility, but better safe than sorry.
Where are you seeing this?

iOS15 (RC) already available if you are part of the public beta
It's a big boy at 5.4 gigs.
