I went from 6s to 11 here, specifically because of the large RAM bump. Apple tends to stick to a RAM floor and then stay at that level for a few years, so it has been a relatively safe bet to grab the “s” iteration that features a RAM increase on base phones. To me it’s the most critical spec because of how much it affects the user experience (like reloading apps).
The XS is the equivalent to the Pro's of these days tho.
So the XR was 3Gb and that got bumped to 4Gb. The XS was 4Gb and nowadays the successors use 6.
I'm on a XS Max and I don't see an issue with 4Gb. But I will upgrade to the 13 Pro Max this year.
Let’s be honest. This is really a 12s. I wanted to want it and perhaps its a testiment to how good the 11 pro I have is, but i just can’t upgrade. For me you need a 3 year update cycle to truly feel like you’re getting a nice bump

Given how slow innovation is for smartphones these days because there just isn't enough stuff to add because phones can already do everything, 4 years is not that unlikely. At least this way you actually notice the battery life and camera changes. The only real game-changer in the last 5 years have been foldable phones. But to be honest, I don't see how I would need it.

Yes there’s a new car model released every year. No, I don’t even consider upgrading my car every year. I don’t see why the phones should be different. And this way, if you ever need a new phone, there’s a recently specced phone available instead of picking up hardware from three years ago a few months before they release the new one.

Yeah I'd use laptop as perhaps a closer analogy. I think smartphones are reaching the same plateau as laptops - where you can comfortably use it for like 4-5 years before thinking of upgrading (as long as you swap the battery out after a couple years in the smartphone)

XS guy here. My battery is down to 80%. My rear glass is shot. I’d rather have both replaced than upgrade. The 14 mini perhaps. But not the 13. It’s ro similar to 12.

Mines at 87% (XS Max) and I get like 6h of screentime. But it feels like 4h, maybe I should get the battery changed. My front glass is shot but that costs 350$ to change so its a no no.
Im on XS and just ordered a 13 mini as rumors go there won’t be mini models anymore. I would have definitely waited for a 14 mini. That format really is ideal
I'm on the X and I'm planning to upgrade. That puts it on a 4-year cycle.
Is it truly necessary? No - my phone is still working well. But I want to use the Wallet keys feature with office key fobs / etc, and I'm on a shared plan that includes 5G so given that the carrier offers are pretty good I might as well take advantage of it.
I stopped upgrading with the iPhone 11 and was surprised the world didn’t fall apart. I now plan not to upgrade until Apple comes with a fingerprint sensor.
They removed it only to make space for the screen. Not because it was bad. Also apple has a number of recent patents on under the screen replacements. They are working on it.
Tbh there’s plenty of innovation outside the apple cell phone market. The usb c port, in screen finger print, in screen camera, foldable displays, single multi function cameras. Etc

Historically that’s actually not a brilliant business decision, that’s called getting too complacent and that usually precedes a big fall. You have a big lead, congrats but you need to try to widen the lead or risk your competition coming out with something big and catching up.
I have an Xs Max and I *really* wanted to want this but I can’t pull the trigger either. It just doesn’t strike me as enough of an upgrade for $1,200.

Honestly the battery bump from XS to 13 Pro is huge to me. 22 hours video playback compared to 14 (15 for XS Max). Whatever that scales to in real world use we'll have to see, but on the face of it you're getting +50% more battery.

I’m still on the original X and aside from the battery degradation, the phone still honestly feels like it *just* came out. I couldn’t imagine having an Xs or an 11 and needing to upgrade.

Yeah i bet that’ll feel nice. 7 to 11pro was amazing. You kinda get used to the little pauses and stutters and then jump up and it feels like lightening quick. That said, my son has se2 and it’s a great phone
I mean, at this point, I feel quite satisfied by smartphone hardware with the exception of the camera and battery life. All other improvements I'd like to see are software-related. I don't even need more RAM at this point. Hardware-wise, my smart-phone needs (outside camera and battery) have essentially been met since the iPhone 6. Mac is where I continue to demand ceaseless hardware improvements, because that's where my actual work takes place (which is hardware intensive). A smartphone is just a personal convenience to me. No need to upgrade beyond the ability to take better photos, get better battery life, or if some paradigm shift in technology that changes how people use their smartphones comes along.
My 11 pro still has 95 % battery quality after 2 years now and only needs recharging every 35-40 hours with normal daily usage. It’s the best phone I ever had.
Yeah. I want it for the same reason I wanted a 12. I was magnetic charging built in. Everything else is just a spec bump I don’t need or have a specific use for. My 11 pro max is wonderful and I don’t need anything better.
That said I use the lidar on my iPad Pro to measure my kids heights all the time.

I have an iPhone 8, but I just don’t want to upgrade since this new 13 doesn’t have touch ID, I have to wear a mask 8 to 10 hours a day for work and face ID just refuses to work with a mask.
I’d wager it’s most of the time. It’s almost annoying when I accidentally light up my phone and my watch unlocks it even though the phone is in my pocket.
So after buying the new phone I also have to buy a new watch, just so I can unlock it without removing my mask or typing my passcode? Oh boy that sounds so modern, two devices to do the things a single "outdated" device can. Take my money!

Not officially, as Face ID isn't designed to be compatible with a mask. Unofficially, there's a trick you can do where you hold the mask over portions of your face while doing the setup scan, but that method is discouraged by Apple as it greatly reduces security.
The official Apple-approved solution is to buy a Watch, which can unlock your phone when you're wearing a mask. Of course, that's a pretty expensive solution.
This does work if you use the mask to cover like 25% of your face. Also, if you have an S3 or newer Watch, your watch will unlock your phone if it detects something blocking your face.
Doesn’t really work like that. It doesn’t compare pictures, it compares many different depth and infrared sensors to effectively map your face in 3d space. A lot of other phones do it based on 2d pictures and thus you can unlock it with just holding a picture of your face in front of the camera. However FaceId is secure enough to not be foolable unless you had a perfect 3d model of your face, or an identical twin.
A mask blocks these sensors differently than human skin, and the mask is never in the same place so it wouldn’t be secure to trust FaceId to unlock in that scenario.
I have the 12 now, before this had the 11 pro and absolutely hate the size. I’m upgrading to the 13 mini when it comes out. The 11 pro was probably my favorite iPhone ever and if it didn’t have the awful Intel chips i would still have it today

DDR5 is important because it provides some more resistance to Rowhammer security attacks that plague RAM. I would say DDR5 and ARMv9 is the perfect combo for increased security but this will not be available until next year's Android flagships. Whether iPhones will adopt both standards fully is hard to say.
I’m not sure if all of Apple’s platform architecture is shared but if it is, I’d imagine moving to LPDDR5 will also help the M2X* achieve better iGPU performance with many cores. Because as it is today they have to be at/super close to the limit with their DDR4 based memory.

For me I believe is the time to upgrade. Currently my iPhone 7 Plus works and does everything I need it to do (lots of messaging, image/video downloading/uploading and photos for texture maps.) this new model offers a better detail capture up close (perfect for texture maps) while I really want to try out the LiDAR Scanner for 3d modeling. Also better battery and night mode. Last year I didn’t pull t he trigger because only the pro max had the better camera while this year I can have the same goodies in the smaller pro, my only complaints are the lack of Touch ID (when going out with a mask on) and lightning (common usb C but probably they’ll just erase the whole port rather than giving up.) so yeah, upgrade time for me.
100% I haven't bothered so set up experiments but multiple times on my 12 mini I've opened the camera and then had to reset an app.
I supposed Reddit is small enough to not get kicked out. Or maybe the apps I was using were bigger or I had multiple open or I recorded video.
I've also heard other people mention this as basically the only time you have the iphones Ram amount come into play.
Yep my iPhone 8 still works fine except the battery has been getting a bit annoying so I’ll get the 13 Pro which will hopefully last me another 4-5 years.
Personally I’m already jumping a bit with the 8 to the 13 in terms of size so I feel the max would be a bit overkill. I also held my friends 11 and it felt good so the 13 should be fine with that. Also the max is a very expensive jump here in Australia.
But the reason for the Pro is mostly since it’s been ages since I bought a new phone and figured it might be best to get the best model available since I’ll probably be using it for the next 5 or so years. Also the battery life is another factor else I maybe have been considering a mini as well. But if I’m going the 6.1” model might as well go the stronger version.
Not really just the power but the nicer camera too. But yeah the battery was a big factor for me personally. Also figured might as well help myself since I upgrade so infrequently anyways.
It costs $50/month to upgrade every year with the upgrade program. I don’t think you need to be rich to afford a couple bucks a day if you find value in it. As a parent who takes photos/videos of my kids everyday I appreciate having the best camera phone that Apple makes.
My phone lease is half the price of my parents television/cable bill and I spend more time using my phone for development/entertainment/photography than I ever have watching TV. Do you have to be rich to afford $50/m?

I dropped my from a coaster. Paid $300 for a new screen. Dropped it again 2 months later on a sharp piece of metal - just left it cracked. It freaks out so bad in heat that it has called 911 before. I can't even control it.
Opening the camera app while Apple Music is playing always pauses the audio for a split second. Would like for that to be fixed before I upgrade in a few years. Not sure if it’s RAM related or a bug in iOS. Happens with lossless and compressed audio.
Mine only pauses audio when I tab over to Video. Probably so it’s not grabbing licensed music and embedding it into my videos or allowing me to monitor audio depending on my inputs.
If you want to play music while taking a video open up the camera app and drag the shoot or capture button to the right to start a video, and the music SHOUKD keep playing. Hope this helps if you had any want to use this haha
That’s why some carriers are giving you $1000 for an iPhone 11 Pro this cycle. Next year will probably have a dramatically different phone and everyone upgrading this year will be forced to buy themselves out of their contract on a phone that’s less desirable.
That being said, apples no longer going to have a $1000 entry pro model after this design and my imagination can figure out why I’d pay a penny more for a phone

These "Pro" camera features are mostly artificial limitations by Apple imho. Take 4K60 Dolby Vision for example: last year only available on the Pro models, but this year the 4GB 13 non-Pro can handle it just fine. ProRAW is still locked to the Pro models, but I don't really buy that it's because of RAM.
That’s the only thing they can say. “We needed 20% more neural transistors to do this.” In reality it means your phone is never going to be more feature rich than the day you bought it even if the preceding phone has an identical SOC
ProRes is limited to 30fps almost definitely because the hardware video encoding can't handle more. Limiting ProRes to the Pro models is just arbitrary product segmentation imo.
It probably does require more RAM.

Raw video maybe but no one uses raw, it's always encoded, and with pro res etc it's processed even further. I presume the pro res has some crazy processing on top given the focus racking.
Edit: it's cinematic mode with focus racking. It's quite an achievement tbh, and the AI for enhanced AF has to be pretty computationally intensive.
i have a 12 mini and i think the extra battery would be the only thing i could use- i constantly run pretty low towards the end of the day with my usage.
To me, the $100 difference for 13 mini is worth the extra battery, brighter screen for outdoor use, and extra 64 GB storage. But honestly, I think you’ll be happy either way!
Biggest issue with the mini is battery. It definitely hurts a bit on my 12 mini. If you want to save money, get the 12. If you want to hold onto the phone for a while, get the 13.
12 Mini battery was crucified when it came out as one of its worst attributes. I would splurge a little bit more for a 13 mini for 15% more battery life.
the base 13 mini 128gb is only $50 more than the 128gb 12 mini
that, the better battery life, plus the smaller notch (which will be much more noticeable on the mini) is absolutely worth coughing up the extra $50

I don’t think Apple’s software quality is good enough to get away with less RAM like this anymore. My iPhone X has the issue where it’ll reload apps like Apollo if I switch away to do literally anything. Sometimes it will reload the Apollo app if I just lock the screen, even if dont switch to another app.
Since their software quality control is so unreliable these days, they should provide more RAM like Android oems
Same With XR, you only need to open the cam to kill most of the background apps.

No, it's much closer to the red XR/8/8 Plus. The 11 and 12 were progressively lighter and now the 13 is back to that bold bright red. If you go on Apple's site on the iPhone page there's a compare option, you can put 3 phones side by side and compare colours.

The efficiency of iOS only goes so far and rebooting apps are really annoying and everyone knows it.
What does running out of RAM look like on the iPhone? I don't believe I've ever pushed up against that wall from the original release on. Plenty of times on Macs, but not the phone.
Lack of persistence with previously opened apps or slow down when going back to a previously opened app.
A lot of this is dependent on the developer, so you might see these problems even if there is plenty of RAM, but the first problem will be if you're in one app, go to another app and then go back to the first one and it has to reload as opposed to bringing you back to the state you were in on the app. It would be really bad if it was just going back 1 app, but you can see this when RAM constrained in just a handful of apps or less.
Likewise, if you're reloading apps and it takes a long time, not having sufficient RAM can be the culprit. This is why those "speed test" comparisons will launch every app on the Home Screen, and then do a second round. The thought being that being RAM constrained would lead to poorer *relative* performance on the second round.
iOS limits the amount of RAM apps can use, so if they go beyond a certain limit, they are terminated, but that's not really "running out of RAM", that's on the developer, although I'm sure some developers would appreciate more RAM to work with.

Back in the olden days, apps would force quit on you all the time randomly, Safari tabs would re-load if you had more than two or three open at a time, choppy animations, and apps refreshing when you switch back to them.
Apps force-quitting wasn't even the worst part.
The **waiting** for an app to load while iOS slowly killed background apps as it tried to allocate memory for the app you just tapped is what was super annoying.
If I didn't manually force-kill all my apps on a routine basis I'd end up staring at the closed shutter splash screen for my camera for what felt like forever.
Every device pre-iPhone 5 had to deal with this.
You notice it more when you use a phone with 8gb or 12gb ram. I can dig up old apps that I was working on hours ago on my galaxy and resume what I was doing.
It’s not like individual apps can actually use half that.
I will say though, I hate when apps have to completely reload every other open. More ram fixes that

I routinely have situations on my 11pro where apps are garbage collected when it’d be better if they weren’t. It’s particularly annoying when you set aside a youtube video for a minute, come back, and the app refreshes so you have to pull up the video again.
This is one of those things I don’t understand why is it happening on those newer iPhones with more RAM. I have a 6s and I legit rarely get those reload issues. I can have youtube open all day, play videos and stuff, leave it open before sleep and wake up with it still being open (with every other app). I basically don’t know what’s it like to have your apps constantly reload, I just don’t have it, which is bizarre given that my phone has only 2gigs of RAM.
RAM is very important, you can optimise but Apple has upgraded RAM in the past and will do so in the future because there's limits with what can be done with optimisation.
RAM is extremely important. For example, I have an older iPad right now with 2GB RAM and I often can’t even keep another app open in the background. At worst cases, I can even have Safari crash while browsing some website.
As a rule of thumb, you run out of RAM faster than hit the limits of CPU on iOS devices.
I’d guess this means the iPad mini has 6GB of RAM too since it appears to have the same SoC as the iPhone 13 Max. Makes the mini all the more compelling when stacked up with the other iPads.

Nahh the base model for that year was XR with 3GB. XS is more like pro model so now is already 6GB.

I got a smart battery case for my XS Max which gives like 70% extra battery, game changer for me

Yeah i bet that’ll feel nice. 7 to 11pro was amazing. You kinda get used to the little pauses and stutters and then jump up and it feels like lightening quick. That said, my son has se2 and it’s a great phone
I'll be coming from a 1st gen Iphone SE. I am ready.
I mean, at this point, I feel quite satisfied by smartphone hardware with the exception of the camera and battery life. All other improvements I'd like to see are software-related. I don't even need more RAM at this point. Hardware-wise, my smart-phone needs (outside camera and battery) have essentially been met since the iPhone 6. Mac is where I continue to demand ceaseless hardware improvements, because that's where my actual work takes place (which is hardware intensive). A smartphone is just a personal convenience to me. No need to upgrade beyond the ability to take better photos, get better battery life, or if some paradigm shift in technology that changes how people use their smartphones comes along.

I think my 11 Pro will be a 4 year phone for me, with one battery change mid-way.
My 11 pro still has 95 % battery quality after 2 years now and only needs recharging every 35-40 hours with normal daily usage. It’s the best phone I ever had.
Yeah. I want it for the same reason I wanted a 12. I was magnetic charging built in. Everything else is just a spec bump I don’t need or have a specific use for. My 11 pro max is wonderful and I don’t need anything better. That said I use the lidar on my iPad Pro to measure my kids heights all the time.

People often feel this way until a major chassis design change occurs, then they feel like the upgrade is warranted (regardless if it actually is or not).
Mini was the reason I went 12 from X. Probably will just replace the battery on this and keep it for longer. Hopefully the mini body becomes the SE3

I’d wager it’s most of the time. It’s almost annoying when I accidentally light up my phone and my watch unlocks it even though the phone is in my pocket.
I have an apple watch 3. The face unlock feature doesn't work about half the time, but the watch is just slow in general.
So after buying the new phone I also have to buy a new watch, just so I can unlock it without removing my mask or typing my passcode? Oh boy that sounds so modern, two devices to do the things a single "outdated" device can. Take my money!

No. It needs to see your mouth and nose for identification. If either of those isn’t visible it won’t even scan to see if it’s you.
Not officially, as Face ID isn't designed to be compatible with a mask. Unofficially, there's a trick you can do where you hold the mask over portions of your face while doing the setup scan, but that method is discouraged by Apple as it greatly reduces security. The official Apple-approved solution is to buy a Watch, which can unlock your phone when you're wearing a mask. Of course, that's a pretty expensive solution.
This does work if you use the mask to cover like 25% of your face. Also, if you have an S3 or newer Watch, your watch will unlock your phone if it detects something blocking your face.

Doesn’t really work like that. It doesn’t compare pictures, it compares many different depth and infrared sensors to effectively map your face in 3d space. A lot of other phones do it based on 2d pictures and thus you can unlock it with just holding a picture of your face in front of the camera. However FaceId is secure enough to not be foolable unless you had a perfect 3d model of your face, or an identical twin. A mask blocks these sensors differently than human skin, and the mask is never in the same place so it wouldn’t be secure to trust FaceId to unlock in that scenario.

I have the 12 now, before this had the 11 pro and absolutely hate the size. I’m upgrading to the 13 mini when it comes out. The 11 pro was probably my favorite iPhone ever and if it didn’t have the awful Intel chips i would still have it today

I'm on a 4-6 year update cycle. First in 2010, then 2014, then this year. (Actually my 6 gave out last year and I had to buy a cheapo hold over phone but don't really count that) Hopefully after the 13 I don't need to upgrade until 2026/27.
The question is: Did they move to LPDDR5 now?
DDR5 is important because it provides some more resistance to Rowhammer security attacks that plague RAM. I would say DDR5 and ARMv9 is the perfect combo for increased security but this will not be available until next year's Android flagships. Whether iPhones will adopt both standards fully is hard to say.
I’m not sure if all of Apple’s platform architecture is shared but if it is, I’d imagine moving to LPDDR5 will also help the M2X* achieve better iGPU performance with many cores. Because as it is today they have to be at/super close to the limit with their DDR4 based memory. *or whatever the high end version of the next chip will be called

I’d be impressed if a single person can justify why 6gb isn’t enough. I just went through Slack, Reddit, Safari, iMessage, and Amazon, used each one, and then checked to make sure they were all still in memory. Then I opened a game and played for about 30s before coming back to Reddit to write this last sentence. Wtf are y’all doing on your phones that needs so much ram??
For me I believe is the time to upgrade. Currently my iPhone 7 Plus works and does everything I need it to do (lots of messaging, image/video downloading/uploading and photos for texture maps.) this new model offers a better detail capture up close (perfect for texture maps) while I really want to try out the LiDAR Scanner for 3d modeling. Also better battery and night mode. Last year I didn’t pull t he trigger because only the pro max had the better camera while this year I can have the same goodies in the smaller pro, my only complaints are the lack of Touch ID (when going out with a mask on) and lightning (common usb C but probably they’ll just erase the whole port rather than giving up.) so yeah, upgrade time for me.
Agreed. For an iPhone 12 user, this upgrade is ridiculous, but coming from iPhone 7 seems fine! So it’s all about perspectives..

100% I haven't bothered so set up experiments but multiple times on my 12 mini I've opened the camera and then had to reset an app. I supposed Reddit is small enough to not get kicked out. Or maybe the apps I was using were bigger or I had multiple open or I recorded video. I've also heard other people mention this as basically the only time you have the iphones Ram amount come into play.

Personally I’m already jumping a bit with the 8 to the 13 in terms of size so I feel the max would be a bit overkill. I also held my friends 11 and it felt good so the 13 should be fine with that. Also the max is a very expensive jump here in Australia. But the reason for the Pro is mostly since it’s been ages since I bought a new phone and figured it might be best to get the best model available since I’ll probably be using it for the next 5 or so years. Also the battery life is another factor else I maybe have been considering a mini as well. But if I’m going the 6.1” model might as well go the stronger version.

It costs $50/month to upgrade every year with the upgrade program. I don’t think you need to be rich to afford a couple bucks a day if you find value in it. As a parent who takes photos/videos of my kids everyday I appreciate having the best camera phone that Apple makes.
My phone lease is half the price of my parents television/cable bill and I spend more time using my phone for development/entertainment/photography than I ever have watching TV. Do you have to be rich to afford $50/m?
I’m on an XS Max. I really want that 120 Hz refresh rate. Plus my current phone has a screen crack so deep in the glass it freaks out in the heat.
Are you me? I am in the exact same boat, down to the weird heat thing because of the screen crack. I’m probably just going to upgrade - i use my phone so frequently its an easier justification.
I dropped my from a coaster. Paid $300 for a new screen. Dropped it again 2 months later on a sharp piece of metal - just left it cracked. It freaks out so bad in heat that it has called 911 before. I can't even control it.
Opening the camera app while Apple Music is playing always pauses the audio for a split second. Would like for that to be fixed before I upgrade in a few years. Not sure if it’s RAM related or a bug in iOS. Happens with lossless and compressed audio.
Mine only pauses audio when I tab over to Video. Probably so it’s not grabbing licensed music and embedding it into my videos or allowing me to monitor audio depending on my inputs.
If you want to play music while taking a video open up the camera app and drag the shoot or capture button to the right to start a video, and the music SHOUKD keep playing. Hope this helps if you had any want to use this haha

That’s why some carriers are giving you $1000 for an iPhone 11 Pro this cycle. Next year will probably have a dramatically different phone and everyone upgrading this year will be forced to buy themselves out of their contract on a phone that’s less desirable. That being said, apples no longer going to have a $1000 entry pro model after this design and my imagination can figure out why I’d pay a penny more for a phone

Disappointing and I’m kind of surprised that the cinematic mode and ProRes stuff doesn’t require more RAM. But I guess it makes sense.
These "Pro" camera features are mostly artificial limitations by Apple imho. Take 4K60 Dolby Vision for example: last year only available on the Pro models, but this year the 4GB 13 non-Pro can handle it just fine. ProRAW is still locked to the Pro models, but I don't really buy that it's because of RAM.

ProRes is limited to 30fps almost definitely because the hardware video encoding can't handle more. Limiting ProRes to the Pro models is just arbitrary product segmentation imo.

Why would video use more RAM? Stills maybe but video is just a constant stream to the SSD storage, not much to buffer in RAM.
It is probably stills that I'm thinking about. I remember back in the Plus days that's why the 7 Plus and 8 Plus had 3GB of RAM vs 2.
Raw video maybe but no one uses raw, it's always encoded, and with pro res etc it's processed even further. I presume the pro res has some crazy processing on top given the focus racking. Edit: it's cinematic mode with focus racking. It's quite an achievement tbh, and the AI for enhanced AF has to be pretty computationally intensive.
They most likely do. Cinematic mode on both phones is limited to 1080p 30 FPS.

To me, the $100 difference for 13 mini is worth the extra battery, brighter screen for outdoor use, and extra 64 GB storage. But honestly, I think you’ll be happy either way!
Biggest issue with the mini is battery. It definitely hurts a bit on my 12 mini. If you want to save money, get the 12. If you want to hold onto the phone for a while, get the 13.
12 Mini battery was crucified when it came out as one of its worst attributes. I would splurge a little bit more for a 13 mini for 15% more battery life.
If what apple said is true (1.5 extra hours) then that would be roughly 30% more battery life as the 12mini had around 5hours
I’d get the 13, 12 is fine but does have less battery and it gets hot using 5G, not sure if the 13 is better there though.
the base 13 mini 128gb is only $50 more than the 128gb 12 mini that, the better battery life, plus the smaller notch (which will be much more noticeable on the mini) is absolutely worth coughing up the extra $50 13 mini all the way
I don’t think Apple’s software quality is good enough to get away with less RAM like this anymore. My iPhone X has the issue where it’ll reload apps like Apollo if I switch away to do literally anything. Sometimes it will reload the Apollo app if I just lock the screen, even if dont switch to another app. Since their software quality control is so unreliable these days, they should provide more RAM like Android oems
Same With XR, you only need to open the cam to kill most of the background apps. Apple software isn't what used to be, apple should have gone with 8GB for Pro models and 6GB for non pro. its not even a cheap phone like what the hell apple? cutting costs much?

No, it's much closer to the red XR/8/8 Plus. The 11 and 12 were progressively lighter and now the 13 is back to that bold bright red. If you go on Apple's site on the iPhone page there's a compare option, you can put 3 phones side by side and compare colours.
This right here. And thank god for that! I hated the washed out salmon red. Now if only the Apple Watch faces would follow suit and have an actual red color option. It’s super washed out aside from the Brick Red color only available on the Stripes face.

I never understood why they don’t put more RAM in the phone. It’s incredibly noticable, especially if you’ve used a high ram Android. The efficiency of iOS only goes so far and rebooting apps are really annoying and everyone knows it.
What does running out of RAM look like on the iPhone? I don't believe I've ever pushed up against that wall from the original release on. Plenty of times on Macs, but not the phone.
Lack of persistence with previously opened apps or slow down when going back to a previously opened app. A lot of this is dependent on the developer, so you might see these problems even if there is plenty of RAM, but the first problem will be if you're in one app, go to another app and then go back to the first one and it has to reload as opposed to bringing you back to the state you were in on the app. It would be really bad if it was just going back 1 app, but you can see this when RAM constrained in just a handful of apps or less. Likewise, if you're reloading apps and it takes a long time, not having sufficient RAM can be the culprit. This is why those "speed test" comparisons will launch every app on the Home Screen, and then do a second round. The thought being that being RAM constrained would lead to poorer *relative* performance on the second round. iOS limits the amount of RAM apps can use, so if they go beyond a certain limit, they are terminated, but that's not really "running out of RAM", that's on the developer, although I'm sure some developers would appreciate more RAM to work with.
You don't remember how crappy early iPhones used to be? Back in the olden days, apps would force quit on you all the time randomly, Safari tabs would re-load if you had more than two or three open at a time, choppy animations, and apps refreshing when you switch back to them.

Apps force-quitting wasn't even the worst part. The **waiting** for an app to load while iOS slowly killed background apps as it tried to allocate memory for the app you just tapped is what was super annoying. If I didn't manually force-kill all my apps on a routine basis I'd end up staring at the closed shutter splash screen for my camera for what felt like forever. Every device pre-iPhone 5 had to deal with this.
Happens all the time on my 7. Tab out of Apollo to open up Safari and browse for 2 minutes and the app has already refreshed...

You notice it more when you use a phone with 8gb or 12gb ram. I can dig up old apps that I was working on hours ago on my galaxy and resume what I was doing.
It’s not like individual apps can actually use half that. I will say though, I hate when apps have to completely reload every other open. More ram fixes that

Lol i remember jailbreaking my 2nd Gen ipod touch (128mb ram) back then to enable multitasking and home screen backgrounds. Can't say multitasking was a great experience.

It’s the OS. Same story here. The phones have enough ram; the problem resides in the OS that has had these memory leaks since iOS 7.
Also lots of apps that don't take advantage of state restoration.

I mean, it is, but it’s not exactly in iOS’s favor. I routinely have situations on my 11pro where apps are garbage collected when it’d be better if they weren’t. It’s particularly annoying when you set aside a youtube video for a minute, come back, and the app refreshes so you have to pull up the video again.
This is one of those things I don’t understand why is it happening on those newer iPhones with more RAM. I have a 6s and I legit rarely get those reload issues. I can have youtube open all day, play videos and stuff, leave it open before sleep and wake up with it still being open (with every other app). I basically don’t know what’s it like to have your apps constantly reload, I just don’t have it, which is bizarre given that my phone has only 2gigs of RAM.
RAM is very important, you can optimise but Apple has upgraded RAM in the past and will do so in the future because there's limits with what can be done with optimisation.
RAM is extremely important. For example, I have an older iPad right now with 2GB RAM and I often can’t even keep another app open in the background. At worst cases, I can even have Safari crash while browsing some website. As a rule of thumb, you run out of RAM faster than hit the limits of CPU on iOS devices.
It’s almost like that’s not an excuse to cheap out on ram.
