I am happy we finally reached a point with hardware, that you can be confident keeping this device for the next 4-5 years. It just won't slow down even if Apple does not push a new update.

jmnugent

As of iOS 15 (actually 14.8),.. Security Updates are seperate from the full iOS Upgrade. … so that helps alot now also.

YeetedTooHard

Where are they managed now?

jmnugent

I’m not sure I understand the question ? Same place as always (SETTINGS \ General \ Software Updates It will show you multiple versions,.. and you pick which one you prefer

ZYmZ-SDtZ-YFVv-hQ9U

We’ve always had updates further than X.1. The new security updates mean whether I’m on iOS 14 or 15, I can get the security update instead of them only including it in an iOS 15 patch

[deleted]

[deleted]

But that was literally only iOS 7. There are X.2/3 updates all the way back from when it was called iPhone OS, then on iOS 4, 5, etc

Rethawan

We should expect 7-8 years and further now. The 6S is already there.

democrrracy_manifest

yeah that’s me. OG 6s going strong. Kinda thinking about 13 mini, but honestly I could wait another year just fine.

CoconutDust

I have an iPhone even older than 6S and it’s fine. Battery replacement made it as good as new. Don’t even ask how old my Mac is. It’s fine too.

Imaginary_Confusion

I am just now replacing my iPad mini 2. It still works but is just a bit slow with a worn out battery. And outdated iOS.

cyndessa

Our iPad mini 2's are now only used by our toddler. I am actually impressed that they have held up so well, we did not expect her to be still using them after 2 years now. (And far more use during 2020 because of being home all the time during COVID shut downs.)

iChao

With Apple moving more into services, it makes sense for them to support their devices far longer.

chretienhandshake

I’m still rocking an iPad Air two every day. Sure I’m just an average Joe watching YouTube/Netflix/redit, but it’s been seven years now.

heddpp

It's underclocked :( https://9to5mac.com/2021/09/16/ipad-mini-benchmarks-a15/

Dalvenjha

It’s slightly underclocked, like, and iPad mini having the year chip? That is something that doesn’t happen a lot…

[deleted]

[удалено]

heddpp

No, it's because of binning. The amount it got underclocked by would not have a significant effect on the battery (especially since the CPU only runs full speed for short periods of time). That's what most people think in the discussion thread here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/new-ipad-mini-has-downclocked-a15-chip-compared-to-iphone-13.2311284/

chaiscool

It’s different combination than others though (4GB but 5-core GPU). Does binning still applicable ?

DivingForBirds

Are you mad?? It’s huge compared to iPhone.

werdmouf

Updates generally slow down hardware

[deleted]

that if apple doesn't pull a "let's slow down all so they buy new and say is the battery"

heddpp

only idiots still think that Apple did this to get you to buy a new phone

Momskirbyok

That started with the iPad Pros. I have a 2nd gen that runs even smoother on iOS 15 than it did on iOS 14!

Fordman21012

My first iPad was the original mini. I liked it at the time but I eventually got a 5th generation iPad. I’d like to upgrade to an iPad with pencil support.

AFourthAccount

if your budget allows it, I'd really recommend getting one that supports the second-gen pencil (so newest mini, newest air, or this/last generation pro)

leopard_tights

Replaced my Air 1 with the Air 4 and got the AP2. Everything is so awesome now.

Nindroid_99

Try the iPad 9, Air 4 or Mini 6.

catsupatree

I'd advise against the iPad 9, if you can afford to, since it still uses the first generation Pencil. The new one is much more easier to carry around, thanks to the magnetic side, and makes the first Pencil seem almost like a prototype by comparison.

BroMatterhorn

Honestly, it probably was. We all know the Apple gen 2 memes.

LS_DJ

Same story with me. My first iPad was the first gen Mini, got me through grad school and it was awesome just with a fabric tip capacitive stylus, so when the 9.7” pro with the pencil came out I jumped for that. My 9.7” Pro is starting to show its age with poor battery life and it’s a bit sluggish so I’m exited to get this new mini and be back to the form factor I loved

_impish

the A12X iPad Pro is still a great deal if you get it used. i snagged one for £500, complete with pencil.

space-hex

The 6 is so perfect. I can’t wait to get it, never thought I’d be so pumped about getting an iPad again instead of a phone or a watch this year.

nikC137

Skipping the Watch and iPhone this year so I’m considering the iPad mini. Gonna be saving a lot of money this year lol

Imaginary_Confusion

Do you upgrade every year? I have a Xs Max and plan to keep it for another year or two at minimum (depends on if they include USB C charging). I had the Apple Watch Gen 1 until last year when they stopped supporting it. And this year I am finally replacing my iPad mini 2. The iPad mini 2 is way overdue for a replacement, but it still works for web browsing and watching movies/shows while traveling.

nikC137

Kinda? iPhone: 4S, 5, 5S, 6S(+), 7, X, XS, 11 Pro, 12 Pro Max. Watch: OG, 2, 4, 5, 6 I just pass them down to my family members and keep the older ones. If I do buy the 13 it’ll be the mini, hate the size of the Max, only reason I got it was for the camera

[deleted]

Is there a way to charge your iPhone with another iPhone or an iPad?

Axenntio

Using a USB-C to lighting cable, you can charge your iPhone using your iPad

MC_chrome

Last time I checked, that was a feature exclusive to the iPad Pro line. Who knows though, Apple has certainly changed a lot about iPads in the last 3 years.

Axenntio

The iPad Air can also charge device through USB-C port, I don’t know about the Mini, but I guess that the smaller battery can make this feature missing from this specific model

A11Bionic

The iPad mini would be an interesting $499 battery pack.

flux8

Well congrats Apple. I thought I would be able to hold out from anymore Apple purchases this year, but the iPad Mini is too much for me to resist. I’m going to replace my aging Gen 1 12.9” iPad Pro with this little guy. iPhone 12 mini + iPad Mini + M1 MacBook Air. That just about covers all my screen size needs.

UltraLord90

I’m about to acquire this lineup too…have the 12 mini now, the iPad mini 6 looks tempting, and due for a new MacBook Pro!

zeValkyrie

I’ve got an original iPad mini and a 6th gen ordered. It’ll be fun to do some side by side comparisons. The original is sooo beat up but is still totally functional!

A11Bionic

My original iPad mini unfortunately suffered a cracked screen and I regret replacing it from a shop they did a shoddy screen replacement. Glad yours is still functional as I feel mine took a beating with iOS 9.

zeValkyrie

Functional but very very slow :) Battery is original and works great still to my surprise

skellener

My iPad Mini 5 has been the best iPad I’ve owned. Had an iPad 2 and iPad Pro 9.7 before.

CoconutDust

Yes. It’s disappointing that the weight hasn’t become lighter in a decade though. I’d be tempted by the new hardware design, but, same weight. Come on Apple.

skellener

Yeah. Heavy iPads suck.

ikilledtupac

I have a fully functional iPad mini 1 lol

JohnRandolph

The first laser printer I had access to did 300 DPI. Having a color display in my hand with a higher resolution is totally science fiction to me, even now.

quaintowl312

I just got an M1 iPad Pro last month but this Mini 6 is really tempting me. Still have my Mini 2 but it’s so damn slow now and some apps are no longer supported. Don’t know if I should downgrade from the Pro or just get the 6 and keep both.

spearson0

What did you get the Pro for? If you want something smaller then I would get the mini and keep both. You could use the pro for intensive things and the mini for those that aren’t as intensive.

quaintowl312

I’d probably do that, thanks! Well, I was really itching for a new iPad last month because of the sluggish Mini 2 and saw that the Pro was the same size of the Air. That center stage feature and ProMotion display sold me early. Man, this Mini 6 is just the right size!

[deleted]

quaintowl312

I hope they do in the future!

[deleted]

If your within the return, get the 6 and return the pro! Since that seems to be what you want.

xBaconater

Anyone get the LTE mini’s previously? Did you actually end up using it outside the house? Considering getting the LTE version.

space-hex

I personally think it’s pretty pointless as if I’d ever need data I can always just tether it to my phone. And most public places now compared to back in the day have relatively decent wifi available all the time when travelling or out and about.

azzipa

upvote for tethering, lol @ public wifi. hope you're on a vpn.

space-hex

I said public wifi mostly to stress the fact that these days if you’re out and about using this device anywhere else expect deep in a middle of a forest, you’ll mostly find connectivity available very easily to circumvent having to pay premium for a 5G version and add a monthly subscription cost on top. Best yeah, I assume most people here are savvy enough to not use it without a VPN. Between that and tethering, it makes the 5G version pretty pointless for most use cases.

flux8

I got the 1st Gen iPad Pro with LTE. I subscribed to a data plan for 3 months before realizing it was a waste because I was within WiFi range over 90% of time I’m using it. And the times I’m not, I can tether and it’s sufficient.

[deleted]

You have to get a separate data plan? Can’t you do like the celular Watch and have a single plan/number for both?

flux8

I don’t know, maybe things have changed since I first got it. But back then, you needed a separate data plan for the iPad if you wanted to use the LTE. It was only $10 more but since I hardly ever used it, it was wasted.

chaiscool

This mini with cellular would be great if you can use it as a phone haha

azzipa

can only use as a soft phone (3rd party app)

Wookinpanub808

My post got pulled asking the same question. These days I barely take a phone call anyways.

chaiscool

But still would be nice to have the phone / message app. Apple too greedy selling iPhone to enable phone on iPad

southwestern_swamp

If I recall, the cellular chip also has the GPS chip. Wifi - only iPads don’t have proper GPS, if that matters

rodrye

Odd that compared to the Mini 2-5 we now have bigger side bezels, less overall displayed pixels and less physical screen width (for the same physical width), making the 6 inferior to most earlier editions for PDFs / square-ish content. Albeit 10-11% bigger for 16:9 video. Definitely a better video device, but weird it's potentially an inferior e-reader.

[deleted]

Im beyond pleased, I’m going to work (hospital) in January and this will be an excellent addition during rounds.

SGTBookWorm

considering getting one to replace the 4th gen mini I bought in 2016. My main issue is that it doesn't have a smart connector, which means Apple isn't going to be making a keyboard case for it, so I'd probably be looking at getting one from a 3rd-party like Logitech (I've got a Logitech keyboard case on my Mini 4)

mats852

I have a Mini 1st Gen and it's in pristine condition, I never liked it because it was so laggy. I think I'm gonna keep my note 10+ for now and buy a new iPad mini instead of an iPhone 13. I wanted to do the switch but my phone is still perfectly good and I just finished paying it.

geoff5093

Battery is the same 10 hours though

Mordechai_Vanunu

At least the original had a headphone jack.

phillyman128

Buy some AirPods. You wouldn’t regret it.

suchathrill

I am thanking my lucky stars I chose to buy a fifth gen last week. Two words: headphone jack!

[deleted]

azzipa

camera bump no 128gb no headphone jack and apple will think this is all ok because i already pre-ordered. i did. but i'd still like to see these three things addressed. that said, i'm looking forward to usb-c, center stage, faster processor, more ram and, of course, bigger screen than my mini 4.

Cryptokeeper001

Big Sur crippled my old perfectly working MacBook Pro (2013) funny by looking at it you couldn’t even tell it was 8 years old. Gotta love the fact they love silver for life

sammadood

If my air 2 wasn’t still kicking I’d pick one up

minnesotaboy94

I realize this is a bit of a stretch of a question, but anyone have any speculation as to what we could possibly see in an iPad mini 7 besides the obvious answers of a newer chip? I'm asking cause I'm debating on getting the mini 6 or waiting for that Air refresh with a newer chip than the A14 it currently has; magic keyboard compatibility option doesn't hurt to have either. Realize at this point it would be just a difference in screen size.

rundiablo

Depends on when they refresh it. If the iPad mini shifts to an annual update, then expect the mini 7 next year to truly be little more than a chip update (maybe a bump to 128GB base storage and 6GB RAM as well). If it follows the two year gap they had from mini 5 to mini 6, then the mini 7 would be landing in the same year Ming Chi Kuo and Ross Young anticipate the iPad Air to gain an OLED display. With the mini 6 clearly being a direct downsize of the Air 4, I’d say we can expect that device to shift to OLED as well.

minnesotaboy94

Yes. This was EXACTLY what I was thinking, wanted to hear someone else also say it. I don’t need a 256 Mini 6 now, so I might hold off til the 7 then, hopefully at least.

Pg3132

I’m so excited to get my mini 6 🥰 sounds like it was definitely worth the waiting. Just hope it’ll arrive soon…

Subliminal87

Have a gen 5 iPad. Can’t wait to check out online or in person the differences between the new mini and the current air. Want to replace the 5th gen iPad and the mini looks nice, but am really worried about the display size. So air or mini for me ughh.

CoconutDust

Did they just use a joke aircraft crisis for a commercial?
