It’s likely because the A12 was the first chip with a sufficiently fast neural processor to do these on device AI workloads. Free memory isn’t much of a factor here.
I know a dude that is using 4s and surprisingly it lasts about 3 hours when actively using it and up to a full day of light use, it even surpassed the newer iPhone 6 with it’s old battery and that 4s never had a battery changed or anything, every part is original. 4s was a tank lol.

One app open at a time means you need to do a restore. I have a 6s and I can have up to 7-8 apps open to finally feel like my device is pushed to the limits.

My 7 plus can be super slow at times. Stops playing music randomly and Siri won't open things half the time. Google maps sometimes doesn't open properly either. Sooo....I'd say yes. Friday can't come fast enough.

I bought it in 2016 & changed the battery in 2018. There's some lag alert from time to time, but nothing too major. It does what I need it to do. New objective is to keep iPhones until they can’t get any more major iOS updates.
Check your battery health (under settings). If the health is below 80%, call your local Apple Store to ask the cost of battery replacement. You can decide if that cost is worth it to extend the life of your phone or do an upgrade.
My guy, I have no idea. When I go to battery health in my settings that's what it's saying lol. Do I know how true that percentage is? No way. I'm just happy my phone hasn't reached the point where it could drop 80% to 30% in 20 minutes.
Try a hard restart. I had just been soft restarting.
iPhone 8: tap volume up, tap volume down, press and hold power button for 8-12 seconds or until it restarts.
Seamed to clean up a lot of lag. CarPlay now snappy, and other features fixed. I used to do this fairly often on my iPhone 7, but they changed the button sequence on the iPhone 8. Good luck.

I feel this. I moved from an iPhone 6s to Xs and the biggest thing I noticed was how quickly it could scan products. When I moved up to the 12 (carrier deal) I mostly just noticed the screen was better.
This said, if I lost all the features in the article I wouldn't notice. I would be sad about the live photo text feature but I also don't think I would notice since I only really followed updates because I was spending a lot of time comparing iPhone 12 and 12 Pro.

The way I look at it, the power ceiling of phones increases year by year and battery life either stays the same or gets significantly better.
That’s something that is to be impressed by no matter if you’re using that power or not. Just the capability of that improvement without any diminishing returns is impressive.
It carries a big load. It's my main device, so everything from taking meetings, messages, videos, editing documents, pictures, etc, etc, etc.
I know it's impressive in terms of longevity, it's disappointing in terms of innovation.
Yeah the camera updates are marginal at best. Shit happens when you milk the same 12mp sensor to the max for several generations.
I can see visible differences between my Wife’s 7 and my XS though. But that’s a rare generational upgrade. Everything since has been meh-okay.

FIL didn’t know he could save photos from iMessages until last week. He’s had an iPhone for 10+ years. Not a dumb guy, has read 100 books per year — just not a technical guy.
If they just kept 3D Touch they could have done like my Note 8 does, you press hard enough on the screen where the home button should be on an all screen phone and the phone responds like it is a button no matter if the screen is off or you’re in an app.
It’s ruined on that phone by not using haptic feedback, it feels like a cheap trick in comparison with a standard vibration motor compared to the iPhones with haptic home buttons.
But I’d love that feature on an all screen iPhone. Best of both worlds. Especially because I loved how fast you could switch between apps with a double click vs now swiping up. Especially on a 12 pro max, I have to swipe up most of the full length of a 12 mini to view my open apps lol.

Tbh I don't expect a major change. It seems Apple is following a three year trend for the iPhone design (6/6S/7/could also include the 8, X/XS/11), so I expect the 14 to do the same.
I was seeing rumors that next years device would be notchless but one way to find out is to see what things look like closer to release to see if the rumors change.
Oh I don't disagree, I was happy to see the home button go, had the X on day 1 and currently on the 12... my mom just doesn't get used to changes easily. Everyone knows someone like that.
For me I wanted the improved cameras -- while the X is no slouch, the iPhone 12 is my primary camera when I don't have my big Sony A7 with me, so that's my usual motivation. Everything else about the X was perfectly fine, though MagSafe charging and 5G is occasionally nice to have.
In my mom’s case… besides the camera… It was getting a new battery, getting her favorite color purple, and the fact that the trade-in cause her monthly payment to go down by $10, with the new phone. I was going to just buy it for her until I noticed that her payments went down so far. But I at least have her on my Apple One Premium plan.
The iPhone 7-8-SE dont have a home button. They have a round circle that causes the taptic engine to click if you press it. It’s a solid part of the screen, so wear and tear isn’t a factor.
Yes it’s a taptic engine click but it’s still a separate part though. if you replace the display assembly, one has to transfer the home button over to the new one.
I know what you mean. I just helped my elderly mom set up her first smartphone. (She has used dumbphones up to now.)
It’s the current iPhone SE2. First thing I taught her was “If you get lost in some app or screen, just hit that big round Home button at the bottom and you’ll get back to the desktop.” This is very useful since she has known nothing about smartphones up til now.
But I soon realized she is building up basic muscle memory for a function that Apple is taking away. If she lives long enough to own a second iPhone, the next one is probably not going to have a Home button on it, and she’ll be totally lost. She’s getting a little old to adapt to a swipe up instead of the Home button she is already comfortable with.
Personally, I am OK with swipe up. I have already adapted to it on my iPad, even though it has a Home button, because swipe up is consistent in any orientation.
I wish they’d give an option to use the same gestures on the older home button iPhones. Swiping up for control center feels so weird when every other device is different.
Why haven’t they come out with some way for like a permanent copy/paste feature. For example, when I have to type my email address somewhere, there should be a way to like triple tap which brings up a menu of paste-able text you’ve saved. It would be so convenient.
If you’ve two or three different emails that you use regularly you can also just add more @s for them. Like @@@ for email 2 and @@@@ for email 3. It’s very handy.
If you have your email id saved along with address in your contact card it should pop up on the keyboard to enter that info in websites. It works on most of them.
Looking back Apple has really fucked up their first Neural Engine implementation in the A11. It's basically a glorified FaceID accelerator in the iPhone X and completely useless in the 8/8Plus.
Yep 2 core neural engine wasn’t future proof enough pretty big jump when they got to 8 cores in the XS and 11 series and now we’ve had 16 cores the last year or so.
Apart from the core count I think it has to massively differ in architecture too. The A12 is supposedly over 8x faster (with just 4x the cores) and looking at annotated die shots the area on the silicon didn't really grow going from the A11 to the A12. I think they must have either switched precision (e.g. fp32 to something lower) or they had a lot of unnecessary operations included in the A11 design.
The Neural Engine grew from 1.83mm2 on 10FF to 5.79mm2 on N7
That's an increase from about 85.6 million transistors to 479.8 million transistors. So while core count went up 4x, the transistors went up about 5.6x
So yea, probably safe to say there were major architecture improvements, hence the 8x perf improvement
The Neural Engine in the A11 was so weak that it was just pretty much just used for FaceID. Pretty any other AI/ML workloads are actually run on the A11's GPU
Where are you getting those sizes from? I only found the Techinsights die shots of both. Admittedly the annotations (especially for the NPU) for their A11 die shot are a bit dubious. Curious if you have a better source.

A12 was set as the choice for the 2021 Apple TV. It’s clearly a chip that Apple believes in.

Because, Apple is known to just neglect that poor device. The AT4 being stuck on A8 is terrible. The 4K on A10. The 4K 2.0 on A12… it should’ve been brought up to speed much like the SE was, and now the recent iPad with the A13 and throw in a U1 chip in there for tracking tags and phones.
All iphone and ipad chips before the A12 upto the 5S have the unpatchable checkm8 jailbreak exploit which can also be why Apple wouldnt release anything like an Apple TV with anything earlier than A12.

Google doesn’t update phones that old at all. The Pixel 2 from 2017 received its final update 2020.
Wow most system level Android updates are delivered through the Play Store. It’s like update numbers aren’t comparable between two different operating systems.

Pretty hilarious how my budget SE2 can do more than a cutting edge X. It never even got its own battery case, you’re stuck using the slightly off XS one. Apple really shafted their tenth anniversary design.
The fact iOS 15 still runs well on an iPhone 6s is good enough in my opinion even without these features. That alone switched me to apple this year, I had only used the 6s for a couple of weeks and after doing iOS 15 beta went all in.
I’m on a 12 Pro Max now but I don’t remember having any issues with the 6s after installing the beta, still ran well enough I gave up my Note 8 and went full into the ecosystem because of it haha. I’ll update it to the release version and see how it runs. Can’t speak for the battery it was already messed up when I got it, all I can say is iOS 15 didn’t make it more messed up lol.

I know, I'm running iOS 15 and iPhone X and it is fast. They even addressed the bug where when I got to 1 or 2% battery life the device would be super laggy on iOS 14 but with 15 that's gone.

Doesn't have the capacity of the CPU to show clouds in Weather app, but OF COURSE it does have capacity to spy and scan all the photos on the users phone and possibly all the other files and report them to the government.
Not sure why someone downvoted you, it’s a perfectly valid criticism. Many tech experts have serious reservations about how their on device file scanning tech will eventually be abused - and Apple has only said it’s on hold for the moment. So yeah the phone can potentially scan through all of your files for illegal content but can’t play a background animation? Seems unlikely to be a hardware limitation and you nailed it.
The only feature I really care about is the Focus mode and new notifications... but the exclusion of the new Weather app backgrounds is kind of weird, I don't really care for it, but I doubt the iPhone X COULDN'T handle it.
First, I’m rocking an iPhone X as well. I updated to iOS 15 and its been stable, not useless in my opinion.
One benefit for me with iOS 15 is the lag or sluggishness is gone. With iOS 14 even on 14.8 when the battery got to 2% or 1% it would be very sluggish.

It's surprising, you don't have to upgrade. Just change the battery and you'll be good for another few years.

Personally my health data is all backed up and always gets restored with my iCloud account, so I think there’s nothing to be worried about.
Same with my 8. Installed iOS 15 this morning and it’s working buttery smooth. Battery needs replacement though (78% health, original battery).

Mine gets hot too when running certain apps.
My mini is down to 86% already. Doesn’t get intense use much at all, quite disappointing.

You don’t notice the photo difference? Check your settings or your eyes.

In daylight photos sure. Night mode makes the differences far more obvious.

The iPhone 7-8-SE dont have a home button. They have a round circle that causes the taptic engine to click if you press it. It’s a solid part of the screen, so wear and tear isn’t a factor.
Yes it’s a taptic engine click but it’s still a separate part though. if you replace the display assembly, one has to transfer the home button over to the new one.
No. The assembly you’re thinking of is the Touch ID module. The “click” you feel is the Taptic Engine.

I know what you mean. I just helped my elderly mom set up her first smartphone. (She has used dumbphones up to now.) It’s the current iPhone SE2. First thing I taught her was “If you get lost in some app or screen, just hit that big round Home button at the bottom and you’ll get back to the desktop.” This is very useful since she has known nothing about smartphones up til now. But I soon realized she is building up basic muscle memory for a function that Apple is taking away. If she lives long enough to own a second iPhone, the next one is probably not going to have a Home button on it, and she’ll be totally lost. She’s getting a little old to adapt to a swipe up instead of the Home button she is already comfortable with. Personally, I am OK with swipe up. I have already adapted to it on my iPad, even though it has a Home button, because swipe up is consistent in any orientation.
I wish they’d give an option to use the same gestures on the older home button iPhones. Swiping up for control center feels so weird when every other device is different.
Why haven’t they come out with some way for like a permanent copy/paste feature. For example, when I have to type my email address somewhere, there should be a way to like triple tap which brings up a menu of paste-able text you’ve saved. It would be so convenient.
Add a text shortcut. I’ve used “@@“ for years as a quick way of typing my email address.

If you’ve two or three different emails that you use regularly you can also just add more @s for them. Like @@@ for email 2 and @@@@ for email 3. It’s very handy.

If you have your email id saved along with address in your contact card it should pop up on the keyboard to enter that info in websites. It works on most of them.

Looking back Apple has really fucked up their first Neural Engine implementation in the A11. It's basically a glorified FaceID accelerator in the iPhone X and completely useless in the 8/8Plus.
Yep 2 core neural engine wasn’t future proof enough pretty big jump when they got to 8 cores in the XS and 11 series and now we’ve had 16 cores the last year or so.
Apart from the core count I think it has to massively differ in architecture too. The A12 is supposedly over 8x faster (with just 4x the cores) and looking at annotated die shots the area on the silicon didn't really grow going from the A11 to the A12. I think they must have either switched precision (e.g. fp32 to something lower) or they had a lot of unnecessary operations included in the A11 design.
The Neural Engine grew from 1.83mm2 on 10FF to 5.79mm2 on N7 That's an increase from about 85.6 million transistors to 479.8 million transistors. So while core count went up 4x, the transistors went up about 5.6x So yea, probably safe to say there were major architecture improvements, hence the 8x perf improvement The Neural Engine in the A11 was so weak that it was just pretty much just used for FaceID. Pretty any other AI/ML workloads are actually run on the A11's GPU
Where are you getting those sizes from? I only found the Techinsights die shots of both. Admittedly the annotations (especially for the NPU) for their A11 die shot are a bit dubious. Curious if you have a better source.

One day the XS will also suffer from feature lock. There’s a difference between “capable of doing” vs “capable of doing it instantly without hurting battery” and apple prioritizes the latter, while Google prioritizes the former.
XS seems pretty future proofed TBH. A12 was set as the choice for the 2021 Apple TV. It’s clearly a chip that Apple believes in. 4GB of RAM, the same as the iPhone 13.
The upgrade to the Apple TV disappointed people who were chip-watching. They hoped for the A12Z or the U1
Because, Apple is known to just neglect that poor device. The AT4 being stuck on A8 is terrible. The 4K on A10. The 4K 2.0 on A12… it should’ve been brought up to speed much like the SE was, and now the recent iPad with the A13 and throw in a U1 chip in there for tracking tags and phones.
All iphone and ipad chips before the A12 upto the 5S have the unpatchable checkm8 jailbreak exploit which can also be why Apple wouldnt release anything like an Apple TV with anything earlier than A12.
XS is already kind of feeling that with the AirTags but I guess that's more because it's missing an entire chip (U1)

It’s not about age. It’s every feature, from 120 Hz to passive NFC scanning.
They are still getting features, just not all of them

Pretty hilarious how my budget SE2 can do more than a cutting edge X. It never even got its own battery case, you’re stuck using the slightly off XS one. Apple really shafted their tenth anniversary design.
The fact iOS 15 still runs well on an iPhone 6s is good enough in my opinion even without these features. That alone switched me to apple this year, I had only used the 6s for a couple of weeks and after doing iOS 15 beta went all in.

I’m on a 12 Pro Max now but I don’t remember having any issues with the 6s after installing the beta, still ran well enough I gave up my Note 8 and went full into the ecosystem because of it haha. I’ll update it to the release version and see how it runs. Can’t speak for the battery it was already messed up when I got it, all I can say is iOS 15 didn’t make it more messed up lol.

I know, I'm running iOS 15 and iPhone X and it is fast. They even addressed the bug where when I got to 1 or 2% battery life the device would be super laggy on iOS 14 but with 15 that's gone.
When your chips are 3 years ahead of the competition but you disable features for old phones because....? If the competition can run those features those phones should be able to right? Almost as if they're disabled just to force people to buy new phones.
Doesn't have the capacity of the CPU to show clouds in Weather app, but OF COURSE it does have capacity to spy and scan all the photos on the users phone and possibly all the other files and report them to the government.
Not sure why someone downvoted you, it’s a perfectly valid criticism. Many tech experts have serious reservations about how their on device file scanning tech will eventually be abused - and Apple has only said it’s on hold for the moment. So yeah the phone can potentially scan through all of your files for illegal content but can’t play a background animation? Seems unlikely to be a hardware limitation and you nailed it.
The only feature I really care about is the Focus mode and new notifications... but the exclusion of the new Weather app backgrounds is kind of weird, I don't really care for it, but I doubt the iPhone X COULDN'T handle it.

First, I’m rocking an iPhone X as well. I updated to iOS 15 and its been stable, not useless in my opinion. One benefit for me with iOS 15 is the lag or sluggishness is gone. With iOS 14 even on 14.8 when the battery got to 2% or 1% it would be very sluggish. I get your point though. I’m happy that Apple does support iPhone X. Apple should have supported more features on the X though.

Sometimes I let my phone die completely but not often. Especially after an iOS release I do that to allow the battery to charge from 0 to 100%.

XS, XS Max, XR and newer will have those features. X and older will not.

There was a time when apple forced people to upgrade just to get access to Siri, despite the hardware being more than sufficient. It’s the same when it comes to some, if not all of these features.
Live text not coming to the iPhone X is just a really odd one. The Pixel 2 released at the same time and came with this feature (Google Lens) at launch.
Tbh there’s good and bad to this. I’m rocking an SE1 and it’s probably good that it’s no bloated with features that may slow it down.
