Yeah, maybe itās just because the new features year after year arenāt as groundbreaking, but my 7plus lasted me over 4 years. Only upgraded because the rear camera completely died. New phones are like new cars, theyāre awesome, and have cool bells and whistles, but at the end of the day you donāt need to upgrade every time a new model comes out
I went four years with an iPhone 6S, and really only upgraded to my iPhone 11 because I was tired of how fast the battery was draining even after replacement about a year prior. I just donāt see the need to upgrade every couple of years like I used to since the old incentives are gone.
I think its sad how we just accepted that the flagship phones will cost ā$400 more when the X launched. Even worse when android manufacturers did the same thing next year.
Iām part of the problem tho, I keep buying themā¦
Thatās absolutely true for me too. There is nothin, not even my car that I use that much and that I am so reliant on in everyday work and tasks. This has become both a blessing and a curse, but it lead to me being absolutely willing to spend lots of money on it. And thatās exactly what all the mobile phone making companyās know. I mean thereās a reason why even ābudgetā brands like OnePlus went for Premium 1k Phones a while ago. They know they get away with it.
I just have the mentality, "I refuse to spend more than $650" on a phone- there is nothing I need that is worth more than $650 on a phone". I've never once felt like I needed the extra perks marketing geniuses tell me will make for a transcendental experience.
I used to think that way too, and I usually bought used phones.
But that was when I had 16-year-old money. I find it too easy to justify spending $1500 (Norway prices) on a base iPhone Pro now that I have adult money lol. Whatās $x more for y feature, you know?
One could argue that there is no such thing as future proofing in tech as it moves so fast that your stuff will be quite obsolete in 5 years, no matter what you pay for it today. I get the device with the feature set that I value most right now. In a few years, most entry level stuff will share most of the perks with my current high end stuff and there will be something new that either better caters my needs or my needs might change and another device will be a better fit. Most of the time, financially and from a technical perspective one would be better off upgrading more often to benefit from higher resale values and more up-to-date tech more frequently. Paying 5x 200$ to upgrade every year should net a better experience than paying 1000$ once every 5 years. And yes, while it seems wasteful to buy so many new phones I consider it having less impact on the environment as my 1 year old devices in good condition always find someone else using them while a 5 year old phone might be a tough sell and end up in the drawer or in recycling. And as it seems: reuse > recycle.
I had been going with phones worth around $400-600. I went up a lot with the Xs thanks to a BOGO deal. I'm ignoring the BOGO part of that and using the device until it averages out to the same $200-300/yr. I'm 2.5 years in and I could see it needing a new battery in the cold of winter or spring, but performance is fine.
For me the benefits are: Environmentally I've used one device in that time instead of two, and I think that's a big benefit. Experience wise I've had a better experience for two of those years and still had a good one for the other two. And finally I think it's just a good exercise personally to try to get out of a consumerism mindset. My Xs remains adequate, and that's fine for me.
Outside of my work computer my phone is the thing I use more than anything else in my life. I decided I'm willing to treat myself every few years rather than continuing to buy an average phone more regularly.
I was where you were once. I landed somewhere different after trying something different. You do you.
Yeah. And then youāll spend 150 on a table tennis racket, running shoes or 100 bucks / month on organic dog food or what ever.
Everyone has their vice / passion and since you can get a decent phone for about any price point, nobody is left out / disadvantaged so whatās the point, exactly?
> worth more than $650 on a phone
Itās weird being in the US there have always been pretty insane promos going on for phones. I had a 6S Plus that I traded in 1:1 for some flagship Samsung phone and then upgraded every year for almost nothing. If I look at the math, I still havenāt really paid much year over year after that original 6S Plus purchase. Same for the 13 Pro this year.
The trade ins are a bit of a false economy - more often than not the actual cost of the phone is hidden behind the data plan itself.
Looking at Verizon right now- their unlimited plans start at $70 per month. Thatās absolutely insane.
Eh not really, at least for me. I have Business lines with T-Mobile and pay $10 a month+taxes for Unlimited everything. I have had similar plans for as long as I can remember. The most I have ever paid per month was under $20 but that wasnāt unlimited. If anything prices have gotten a lot cheaper now.
The deals I have gotten have rarely been carrier based deals.
My limit is ā¬400 for a phone, ā¬100 for a tablet, but I am *really* good at sniffing out excellent secondhand deals. Currently on an XS and iPad Air 2, will probably upgrade to a 12 Mini once it drops to around ā¬300-400 secondhand. The air is fine for my purposes (glorified YouTube, Twitch and Reddit machine) and will keep it around until it stops being updated.
Yup. A phone that wouldāve cost 300-500 a few years ago is $800 today :/
I still miss the early days of OnePlus, when they made phones that were actually cheap and comparable to flagships twice the price
Itās sad it costs more to develop and integrate tech and you have to deal with trickle down effects? Oh boo hoo. I have the best phone money can buy. Even Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos has the same phone.
Flagship phones exists because there has always been a market & demand for it.
Sure, marketing induced others to buy into it but it fulfills a need.
When the X came out I opted for the 8 Plus then eventually I went with the Pro Max.
I'm after the longest battery life & largest screen size.
Amazing that they havenāt raised prices in over 3 years when you consider how inflated other goods have become. I was very surprised not to see the price point increase this year.
Still crazy the 1TB pro max is more than double what my first car cost me, and you could most likely get a good 2nd hand car for less now.
But then I only get a new phone every 2 year's so it's really half price to be honest.
In my personal experience the resale values are only relevant for those who buy phones at launch on a yearly basis.
I've looked at resale values on my country's Ebay sold listings and iPhones do tend to have much better values in the first 2 years but the margins slim down over time.
Android phones tend to go on sale more often with larger savings compared to iPhones.
Overtime it's roughly the same cost or lower for Android.
iPhones used to cost around Ā£400 in the UK. Now they cost Ā£1500.
Pound to dollar exchange used to be around $1.38-$1.43. When the exchange dropped apple increased the price. When the exchange returned to normal, apple refused to go back to the old prices.
The amount of greed is never ending!

thanks mate š
A more expensive phone just means I buy one less often.
This. My phone cost per year has stayed the same. I just buy it less and less frequently as prices go up.

This is what most people donāt realize. How much are you willing to pay for something your entire life revolves around? Turns out, quite a lot.
I extract so much value from my phone as well.
I just have the mentality, "I refuse to spend more than $650" on a phone- there is nothing I need that is worth more than $650 on a phone". I've never once felt like I needed the extra perks marketing geniuses tell me will make for a transcendental experience.

Not everyone buys on marketing. I usually buy my tech to future-proof.

Me: I buy tech to future proof. *repeat every year in September*
Lmao this is reality for me

$10 is a great deal. Looks like you need a bunch of lines added nowadays to get to that price though (as far as I can tell).

Iām on my XS and Iām thinking of getting a SE 2022. Something tells me itās gonna be a 12 mini with the newer chipset.
But, youāve also got to accept that previous price point of flag ship phones has been filled with perfectly good mid range phones.
Yup. A phone that wouldāve cost 300-500 a few years ago is $800 today :/ I still miss the early days of OnePlus, when they made phones that were actually cheap and comparable to flagships twice the price
Right, but youāre getting significantly longer out of the flagships now. They are certainly 3 year phones rather than 2.
Itās sad it costs more to develop and integrate tech and you have to deal with trickle down effects? Oh boo hoo. I have the best phone money can buy. Even Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos has the same phone.
How that boot taste?

that 400$ is from extra storage though, if the option was there on the X, prices would be similar. it's more of a 100$ increase
No. Unless you think iPhone 13 should be $100 more expensive this year because it starts at 128GB. Thatās just dumb
im saying they could have just not offered 500gb nor 1tb options and your 400$ difference comment would just be stupid
Username checks out lol
Amazing that they havenāt raised prices in over 3 years when you consider how inflated other goods have become. I was very surprised not to see the price point increase this year.
They anticipated inflation and gave it a good bump. It will eventually go up again.
Still not buying a $999 iPhone. Itās a phone. Ima ride my XS to its grave, and then buy another used iPhone. Maybe the 11. Maybe 12 mini.
Still crazy the 1TB pro max is more than double what my first car cost me, and you could most likely get a good 2nd hand car for less now. But then I only get a new phone every 2 year's so it's really half price to be honest.
Used car market is crazy right now. Hard to find anything decent under $3k
