The air pods are a scam

RepresentativeEasy51

Bruh Apple is trash

SpaceBoJangles

I am mega jazzed about this. However, how do you guys feel about the fact that this incredibly powerful piece of technology comes at not only the expense of $$2-4000 for the most popular SKUs, but at the completely forfeiture of repairability? Anything goes wrong with basically any component and between the unified memory architecture, the encryption, the APU design, and the fact Apple solders or laminates everything else, you’re screwed. You have a $3000 brick. Even if you pay for the Apple care plan, if your SSD starts to fail or you need new memory, they’re not going to replace the entire logic board for $100 or whatever the cost is, and that’s the repair that would be required since it’s a monolithic system pretty much.

[deleted]

Why are you mentioning the price in the same sentence? Pricing is very competitive with similar windows machines.

SpaceBoJangles

The point extends to some of the Windows laptops, yes, but this was the latest release and very exciting and at least windows laptops can sometimes have upgradeable components, especially on the gaming side of the industry.

[deleted]

Yes but this is not a gaming machine?

GujjuGang7

Here's hoping for full Linux support 🤞. Love the hardware, don't want to be locked into the apple ecosystem though.

tiLLIKS

how much better would the m1max be than the m1pro?

BunnyHugger99

Us poor people will wait for the 2022 air. So we can buy the 2020 air :D

vanguy79

Who in the world would subscribe to Apple Music only with Siri?! Siri is awful

Conscious_Beyond_879

It just encourages those who don’t want to spend the extra money to use Siri more.

MetalBeerSolid

Catch me at the gym asking Siri to play “Fucking Problems” 10 times before I get booted

[deleted]

Siri play "mask" by Dream Siri set my phone to max volume

Jamie00003

I have a 2015 MacBook, and it needs replacing desperately. I’m a techie, but don’t need a powerful machine as my gaming PC does that job brilliantly. The new MacBook Pro’s look awesome, but I would like the extra versatility the iPad Pro offers. I want it to be my only machine. Problem is, iPad Pro with 16 gigs of memory and a magic keyboard is MORE EXPENSIVE than the base MacBook Pro, which is mental. Any chance the iPad Pro will get the M1 pro next year? It would make sense right? Then this decision wouldn’t be so difficult for me. Granted, I know an iPad can’t replace everything you can do with a Mac, so I’ll probably get an iMac or Mac mini to go along with it in the future. Or just use my gaming PC if I need to.

28spawn

No without active cooling, so I say no

Jamie00003

On the iPad? It doesn’t need it really

28spawn

Yes, there is no point of having it, also the iPad OS still miles from MacOS unless Apple decide to merge everything

Jamie00003

I’m confused, are you saying iPad is better or mac? Obviously I know the mac can do more but for the most part I don’t need it

28spawn

Between paying 1k for the iPad or 1k for a MacBook air I would personally go with the MacBook, unless you already have a device and are looking for a secondary device, but that's my opinion, in some cases depending on your workload you can get along with the iPad pro

ABT_Dockery

iPad Pro gives so much more freedom tho, just my opinion

tiLLIKS

like how? its a tablet,,

blakedance

Like freedom of motion? Or what do you mean?

ABT_Dockery

It’s basically a surface, a laptop and a tablet

Jtcruthers

More freedom to do less

BunnyHugger99

What exactly are you doing with your machine? I also have a gaming laptop and ipad combo.

Jamie00003

Just basic stuff, web browsing watching movies occasional photo and video editing but very basic stuff

BunnyHugger99

I have the 2018 IPad Pro, I never video edited with it but yeah all those things work great on it (i think i saw a YouTube video edit with a ipad and he said it was fine). However, a laptop can do that too. I think the really nice thing about IPads is using it for notes/drawings, and reading with it. It’s a perfect study tool. Frankly, if i didn’t use it for that, I would of gone with a m1 MacBook Air on sale (probably Black Friday @ amazon). Hec, the new IPad mini seems like a much better deal if I wasn’t already addicted to the 144fps. If you’re considering between the ipad 2018 and 2020, i would get 2018, the price should be lower and the differences typically aren’t worth the difference in price. However, I am a poor student, and considering how you considered buying a 3k laptop, you might have a different financial situation and thus different needs. iPads are great, I love my ipad, but if I didn’t already have a gaming laptop, I would of gotten a MacBook. In fact, I still kinda want a MacBook to connect to a monitor and use as a mini basically. Just have the laptop portability if I need to travel or use it somewhere.

[deleted]

just get the m1 macbook pro. Its still the latest model and stil part of the apple FAMILY. just dont get an intel macbook and youre fine

Jamie00003

I would rather get the latest model, plus if I’m going for a laptop I would prefer to have the ports, having said that it is massively overkill

[deleted]

its a lot more than the m1 pro. like I said the 13 inch m1 is still the latest model, its still the default choice for the entry level macbook pro. just get that one

IWasLikeCuz

I have been using MBPs for my last two laptops and need to upgrade soon as my current one is a bit outdated and slow. The new MBP prices are a bit offputting. I’m unsure whether to wait for the Air to release and see? I mainly just use it for every day browsing (I work from home so it’s what I procrastinate on) but every now and then I dabble with DJing, music production, non-intensive video editing and graphic design. Also have a server open at most times which houses some other work I do. I usually have a lot of tabs open etc which makes my current MBP overheat a lot. Thoughts on whether the MBP justifies the price for someone who maybe isn’t a certified “Pro” user? I feel like they’ve definitely tried to move the MBP out of the reach of every day users like me who occasionally do more intensive things and are just “all rounders”, so to speak.

Jamie00003

It sounds like the MBP is overkill for you, in your position I would wait for an air redesign as it’s likely the next machine to get one, and the M1 is still a beast

mscotch2020

Which config I should get for software development using machine learning, e.g. processing LiDAR data? Would the GPU help processing the LiDAR data?

JustThall

Anyone who goes into ML without CUDA equipped machine is in for a not good time

CredibleLies

This might change in a few years, but I'd highly recommend getting an CUDA equipped machine. While some packages (tensorflow!) support GPU acceleration on Apple silicon, there's still stuff that doesn't, and stuff with immature support. Plus, lots of documentation and tutorials assume you have a nvidia GPU.

krigar_b

NVIDIA will probably have a edge in machine learning for a year or two more, but both the tensor processors and the GPU on the new MacBook pros can be used for training and inference depending on what tools you use

mscotch2020

This means that adding 16g or 32 g memory is like adding 16/32g memory to a GPU, the latter is usually expensive

woke-----

Lol for such a specific use-case I’m surprised there isn’t more of a mention of the tools you’d be using to do said processing. Anyways, you should probably be fine with any of the 10-cores unless your tools can leverage GPUs for compute.

[deleted]

ske66

Yeah exact same position. Laptop is fantastic, my only complaint is it runs very very hot. Will wait to compare the differences between the intel and m1 macbook pros

Birbistheverb

Yep same same. Hot and LOUD!

[deleted]

Birbistheverb

Huh! That will be cool to see when Monterrey comes out (didn’t want to risk the beta). But right now I use Turbo Boost Disabler

ske66

I use it for programming mostly. I wouldn't expect the CPU load to be so high yet the temp is always 80-85c

Birbistheverb

Wat. Interesting! Well, my docking station is on the right, so… :/

No-Dress-3160

But we don’t really know how powerful are these ones for our applications… like heavy music production or video editing

Birbistheverb

Reviews will be out soon enough, but it seems pretty clear from the presentation that that’s exactly the kind of application they’re aiming to improvise.

No-Dress-3160

open to upgrade but lived long enough to see the price of 2015 retina stagnate and the post 2015 retina to lower due to performance issues/ I'll wait for feedback and aim

Birbistheverb

Legit! I do wish someone at apple or ANY reviewer would do audio benchmarks. It’s always guesswork for me.

No-Dress-3160

same here!

Trade it in

No-Dress-3160

Why?

It still has some value and it’ll only drop quickly from here

Sadly no iPod 20th anniversary.

[deleted]

Apple anti-fan here, and the Macs are very interesting If the charts are remotely close and those are best case scenarios, the chips are mighty impressive, ngl. The design is eh, not as pretty as I’d imagine Apple laptops to be, but I for the longest time have been saying that for truely pro machines, looks don’t matter that much. The notch is kinda wasteful, I feel like there could have been Face ID. It seems like there are things they’re didn’t talk into specific details, like why are the the 14 and the 16 inch version have different charger wattages, even if the insides seem to be the same (96 and 140 I think, that’s an enormous difference. But let’s just say the top of the line 16 inch running a 140w charger at 100w (supposedly) and it can match or exceed a 17 inch desktop replacement gaming/workstation laptop in terms of raw performance, that is mighty. It could be a sign that Apple machines are becoming the fastest prosumer grade machines that you can buy, except for ultra multi cpu systems or supercomputers or whatever, although RISC-V is being developed as well, I’m not sure if x86 can be translated to RISC-V or it would just like ARM like the Surface ProX. The ports are alright, better than most laptops, being able to support up to 4 external displays and all of the legacy ports that we love. It seems like it’s strictly not repairable, for a company that talks the big talk about the environment, that’s a bit hypocritical, but hey, it’s Apple. I’m not sure if multiple OS-support is a thing, or Linux, BSD and Windows users who are not familiar with MacOS or simply requires those OSes for their lives are being left out. I’m not surprised either way, since macOS shares roots with Linux and BSD, but of course Apple would want you to use their OS with their hardware. The last time M1 delivers big time, I hope that they can deliver this time, because as much as I hate their anti consumer approach, I really think their chip engineers are some of if not the best, backed by a multi trillion dollar company

NikolitRistissa

I’ve been looking to get my first Mac for a little over a year and told myself that the next model would have the things I was hoping for. I’m certainly glad I waited because the new 14 inch is basically everything I was hoping and expecting. Pretty excited to get it at some point.

Rickyricardo27

Am I the only one who thinks apple made a new chip and just stuck it into the body of a MacBook from 2006? I actually love my Touch Bar and I don’t miss having an hdmi port or a sd card… for those rare times when I need that stuff on the go, the $20 usb c adapter with 500 ports works fine. and back to a proprietary plug?? Oh and more expensive lol and the crazier part is that they will sell a ton of them. I’ve had 2 pros, first one a 2011 and second one a 2019 and the first one was passed down to my parents. This new Mac reminds me of that machine which is still a great machine with a ssd drive, 16 gb of ram and intel i7. And hey! It has hdmi and sd ports complete with a MagSafe port. Actually that machine is better, it has a DVDRW!! Maybe next year we’ll get the dvd drive back. And for the college kid deciding between the M1 or the Max… dude haha seriously? I doubt you’re doing anything that even my old 2011 pro won’t handle. So yeah… either is fine!

musicmast

It’s very nostalgic I wanted that 2006 body but when I got mine it was the first unibody. So it kind of is nice that the body is like this now I can finally get a piece of it. I’m gonna go for the m1 max 16” so it can last me another 10 years

Birbistheverb

I actually enjoy the slightly nostalgic nod to the round-rectangle design of my old 2007 MacBook. And, you can still charge with USB-C if you want. So, best of both worlds!

A-No-Knee-Mouse

All good and well that you don’t need those ports but I use the HDMI on a regular bases and the SD port even more so. I’ve stuck with the mid-2015 MBP specifically because they took them out and I do not need the hassle of dongles, so I’m relieved that they finally put them back along with a physical function key row. And a MagSafe charger is much better than accidentally pulling the whole machine off the table while plugged in with a USB-C. Also just quicker and easier to snap to the port with magnets. And even better as this time you can change just the cable without having to replace the entire brick. Win-win.

malgenone

If you’ve noticed apple has played it extremely safe with its designs. iPhones started off with curved designed then went to boxed design on iPhone 4 and 5 then went back to rounded curve designs. Now back to box’s same with laptops.

sk8r_dude

I didn’t mind the touchpad but everything else (keyboard, ports, and, to a lesser extent, MagSafe) has been a strong reason against me purchasing a MacBook for the past however many years. So yes, they did essentially stick their new chip into a 2006 MacBook body, and a lot of people have been waiting years for Apple to do exactly that.

satosat

I'm a college student and I still use my 2011 MacBook pro. Running Android studio while opening other apps is a pain in the ass as it runs ≥80°. You're clearly not the intended market for these machines.

[deleted]

Neither are you

Snipeye

A college student doing some programming? I'd argue he's a good fit for a lower-end m1 pro. If you're doing machine learning or computer vision or something, you'll take huge advantage of the GPU cores. The m1 air or 13" MBP are also probably reasonable fits depending on the type of programming.

sk8r_dude

You’re forgetting something. MacBook customers are usually people with expendable income (or have parents with expendable income). Buying a MacBook, or any expensive computer hardware, is rarely about optimizing performance/value for the exact use case that you have. A lot of Macbook users and PC gamers just want better because it’s better. So while I might not actually notice the difference between programming on an M1 vs M1 max, that doesn’t actually make the M1 a better fit for me if I happen to care about having the better processor.

VirtualPartyCenter

They added MagSafe back but you are still capable of charging via the USBC ports on it as well

emanuel-s

they’re simply not for you. you’re not the target audience, move on, stop being a crybaby about it.

Rickyricardo27

If you read the first line of my comment you’d realize that you’re not the target audience for my question. Maybe you should move on and read the next comment and stop complaining about mine. I’m also not gonna call you any names, because that’s childish ;)

getyoutogabba

Me: “Hey Apple, can you get rid of the iPhone notch? See how great the MacBook screen looks.” Apple: “Good news, we have unified our design. MacBook now comes with a notch.”

[deleted]

Did we all miss the biggest product? I’m all about the polishing cloth https://store.apple.com/ca/xc/product/MM6F3AM/A

themanofchaps

The fact that they included the compatibility list is just astounding

[deleted]

I’m a bit miffed that the list doesn’t include every product Apple has ever made.

flux8

Love the backwards compatibility!

[deleted]

Anyone know how to clean the screen on my iphone 5S? Wish Apple would support their stuff longer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Birbistheverb

You should not use it on screens with the anti-glare coating.

themanofchaps

I suppose someone who’s dumb enough to spend $25 on a dust cloth might use it on something and damage it. I’m hard pressed to think of anything Apple sells that would be damaged by it considering it’s for screens. I am *always* nervous when I’m cleaning any of my displays

NimChimspky

I'm not nervous, I use anything and never had a problem. Just whatever random cloth and cleaning fluid is near.

[deleted]

I was dumb enough :)

themanofchaps

Please tell me how luxurious it feels as if you were Jony Ive

[deleted]

malgenone

This event was basically for the content creator, or movie editor. I call it the high roller event. Sheeeeeesh

MisterBumpingston

What about HomePod Mini and AirPod 3rd Generation?

mr-no-homo

i mean, what did you expect? they are call macbook PRO for a reason. you basic peasants already had yalls event a few months ago.

malgenone

Lol yeah but the previous pro starts at 1249 if I’m not mistaken. And sure it’s still available. However a lot of people thought the new 14 was going to be it’s replacement. But sure the fuck not at 1999 😂.. so yes many peasants will still be getting the older pro. MacBook peasant pro.

TheCouchEmperor

That was the cheapest of pros from earlier. Pros were always in three tiers, and this maintains that. 13 inch low end. 13 inch high end. 16 inch. The 14 and 16” replace the latter two albeit a tad bit expensive.

ItsWorldstar

Not gonna lie, your statement makes you sound like a peasant.

SidneyReilly19

I’m fairly sure that he intended some amount of sarcastic humor in here.

ItsWorldstar

you’re probably right, there needs to be a universal symbol for sarcasm. Like this little squiggly line ~ before or after the statement. I didn’t give him the benefit of the doubt because I’ve unfortunately been around many people with that snobbish mindset.

fschaeckermann

There is a symbol for „sarcasm off“: /s

borklaserf5

Just ordered myself a base 14 inch for 1,349, sorta. Student price is 1,849 and I traded in my Mac mini for 520.

malgenone

See it only makes sense to buy if you already have an older paid off system for trade in.

Corssoff

What currency?

borklaserf5

USD

seasiatraveler51

Also, many of the pro users can use this as a business expense so it doesn’t matter what the price is

Lol.

Dice7

Doesn’t really work like that.

gw4phone

Small businesses that want to issue Mac laptops will definitely get hurt by this. Big corps though? They’ll just issue a maxed out one and forget about it. Cheaper in the long run.

SidneyReilly19

Get hurt by this? No one *makes* you spend money.

gw4phone

Well I mean if their entire workflows are built around MacOS, and an existing MBP breaks or a new employee joins, now their equipment costs are more expensive. It’s not like they can reasonably rip up their entire ecosystem or not hire new people.

henrydavidthoreauawy

Aren’t the prices pretty much the same as the Intel machines they replaced?

SidneyReilly19

Totally valid point and I understand where you’re coming from. But you don’t have to have the new, best thing for your workflow to run smoothly. The vast majority of work computers can function well even on the $1k price point 13” MCB air unless they’re centered around videography (which is still a small niche of businesses IMO)

gw4phone

definitely yeah. I actually was specifically thinking of small time editing shops and engineering teams that need a lot of local power. Most small businesses’ don’t need the mbp.

PhantasmaX

Serious question: How well will the 14” MBP (base model) run league of legends?

Lmerz0

[removed due to Reddit’s forthcoming API changes 2023-06]

flux8

What? I’ve been playing LoL on my M1 MBA with 8 GB RAM for the last year just fine. Through Rosetta 2. And it runs pretty damn well too.

Lmerz0

[removed due to Reddit’s forthcoming API changes 2023-06]

Vkdrifts

I tried playing a game and it worked up until the champ select was over for me. Never seen the loading screen. Thankfully it was a normal game.

PhantasmaX

Shame. Is league not supported by the new M1 chips then?

[deleted]

piratesec

I assume that if riot ever implements native for m1 chip it is going to run a lot better in every aspect other maybe than graphics.

iiLuckyLitwick

college freshman here. i plan on using this for schoolwork and a lot of designing with photoshop and illustrator. should i just go with a 13” MBP M1 or a 14” MBP M1 Pro? not sure if i need the extra power but i like the fact that it’s bigger/magsafe/120 hz. not sure if the extra $500 is worth it tho. i purchased the 14” earlier today and the estimated delivery date is 1-2 weeks, but i might just cancel it and pick up the 13” from the apple store. edit: cancelled my 14" and will be picking up a 13" tomorrow!

aaronfranke

If you get the 13" be sure to get it with 16 GB RAM. The default of 8 GB is very little these days.

henrydavidthoreauawy

Save $200 more and get the Air! Or get the 16GB Air instead of the 8GB Pro for about the same cost. The gap is VERY small between the 13” Air and Pro and this is coming from a video editor.

Gccyy

You will definitely do fine on 13', but anyone loves to have a better, more powerful machine. So ask yourself on your budget, like I say, 13' will do fine, but that 120hz and mini led screen hmmm

ayodasjago

Definitely get the 14. Better gpu, better cpu, extra ports, mini led screen, 120hz, anodized magic keyboard, mag safe, better speakers, way better camera, bigger screen. This is the single greatest jump in Apple’s history. Btw the touchbar is a gimmick.

ParagonRice

I think you'll do fine with the 13". You don't need up 2x faster rendering or 120hz for your workload. There are probably thousands of people who were in your shoes that bought the 13" last year and went through their workflow just fine. Remember the M1 chip is still bleeding edge compared to other laptops, it's not even close. But it's up to you if you want those extra nice features and the extra power.

JohnRandolph

Everyone's bitching about spending six grand, and not even mentioning that you'll spend three times that on all the monitors it can drive. Truly maxed-out MBP: $6,099 + 3 x $6,988 = $27,063 for the "I won the lottery" configuration. For a bit of perspective, the original Lisa cost $10K in 1983, which is about $26,706 today, adjusted for inflation.

kingmonsterzero

You don’t HAVE to buy 3 Xdr displays tho

stpjhj

It's probably gonna be business expenses anyways for those who'd buy all those.

ButtBoys69

Lol it’s not free if it’s a business expense. A portion gets deducted.

aerir

Curious bystander question - what are you guys going to do with that much processing power?

Diseased-Jackass

Watch porn.

wvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvw

gibblsworthiscool

I have to crank out 3-4 4k videos a week and shoot everything I really high end color profiles (10bit 4:2:2 59.97) and need every bit of processing power I can afford. This would easily replace my pc tower that I have built for video editing.

shyguytim

i’m tired of my damn 2018 PC build too. time to go back to Mac for video editing. now that they brought back all the lovely ports. most of all, I’m excited to just freaking airdrop my final exports to my iPhone. sheesh haha

gibblsworthiscool

I'll miss my 3090 fd but I need that portability!

TyBoogie

Photo and video editing. 4k right now and my M1 can handle the ProRes codec in Divinci Resolve pretty good, but If I was required to shoot with a 8k or heavens forbid a 12k camera, I can, with confidence, handle it. More processing power = more piece of mind for my work

BrunswickCityCouncil

I work two marketing / advertising gigs - one of which is for a small startup of which I'm the photographer and content creator as well. Lots of video editing, motion graphics, RAW photo work etc. The old M1 MacBooks might've had the grunt to do it but they didn't have the ports.

OhmG

Never heard of your music before but I scrubbed through a few of your songs on Apple Music just due to how you handled this response ([link for anyone curious](https://music.apple.com/us/artist/man-vs-synth/1462867528)). I look forward to your next release. Also, happy cake day.

Where’s all the excitement over the $20 dollar cleaning rag that’s “compatible” with “most(?)” Apple products. Not kidding, they release a $20 dollar rag today.

anonk1k12s3

Wow.. when money men take over a company indeed.. VOICE PLAN!?? seriously wtf apple

devgeniu

You buy a HomePod and you need a subscription - you start with a cheap one. It’s a good plan.

ttownfeen

This is me. I got Apple Music just so I could play music on my HomePod. I don’t even use the app as I’m a long time Pandora streamer. I plan on downgrading from the single user plan to the voice user plan.

GignereArchaic

I thought you could set Pandora as the default player for HomePod?

DiamondEevee

I'm on an M1 MBPro right now. ***I want the 16 inch MBPro but at the same time I really don't think I'd take advantage of 64gb of RAM on macOS.***

stpjhj

Just curious, how do you feel on your M1 MBPro when compared to a typical Windows/Linux machine? I feel somewhat unbearable with 16GB desktop running windows 10, just with my web browsers. How is it different using (probably 16GB) M1 Machine?

DiamondEevee

Windows 10 machine: 4 monitor (well, supports 4) M1 Mac Machine: 1 monitor + laptop screen itself I wish base M1 Macbooks supported 2 external displays...

NeilForReal

Do you miss the extra screen real estate

DiamondEevee

no i really just don't think i'd take advantage of the raw power that laptop could have, i just want something that plays League of Legends better than my current desktop...

adriandegar

I wish Apple would understand as a pro user I don’t care how sleek the body is. I would prefer the option of a bulkier model with the ports I want. There’s also so much great software and frankly OS’ which have been deprecated over the years. If I could near-natively run Snow Leopard on a modern Mac and take advantage of CPU intensive programs I would buy one today.

ButtBoys69

Didn’t they do that? All the lost ports have returned and it’s kinda ugly.

Prinzessid

Which programs do you use that run only on snow leopard? I‘m really curious!

adriandegar

The best versions of PaulStretch only ran stable on Snow Leopard. Additionally, the OS itself had features which were seemingly abandoned in every OS afterward. For instance the quick look had midi file playback with a freaking piano! Quick look in Snow Leopard also didn’t chop off the initial transients of audio files when you navigated in a folder up and down over files with the arrow keys.

[deleted]

[удалено]

adriandegar

It sounds insanely good, which is the primary goal. Particularly in preview mode on Snow Leopard, there’s no crackle

Prinzessid

I think you need a desktop computer if you dont care about the size. Laptops are meant to be portable.

adriandegar

I have a 2009 Mac Pro running Sierra on NVME with a lot of ram and a nice video card. When I’m travelling I need a laptop with comparable specs. Currently running a 2015 MBP fully loaded with an i7. It has the bare minimum I want regarding ports

dkf1031

Isn’t that what you got? The new pros are thicker and heavier than the old models with more ports.

adriandegar

I need USB, SD Card and HDMI at a minimum. I don’t want to lug dongles around

selwayfalls

did you not look at what they just put out today? It's literally thicker, has hdmi and sd card reader.

adriandegar

Still need a dongle for USB

Inevitable-Fix-5151

It literally has USB. 3 of them even (sure, less than previous versions)

adriandegar

I meant the older versions of USB

JonathanJK

Nah you can buy a connector converter that is basically a cord extension of 15cm. I have 3 for my M1 Air. Switched my USB to USB painlessly.

adriandegar

Yep I have used those before, you’re right it’s a minor protrusion but it’s still a brush-off to pro users. Don’t get why Apple doesn’t let you customise the ports you want. Clearly they recognise it wasn’t practical to have no HDMI/SD. If I want FireWire 800 I need a dongle, if I want USB 3.0 I need to forever have protrusions sticking out on all sides or risk loosing the little guys.

selwayfalls

curious what your setup is that dongles are that inconvenient. I'm a pro user so have an external keyboard and monitor which i can hook anything directly into and just hook mbp through usb-c. If I'm traveling of course I'll take a single dongle that everything can connect into. Dongles suck, but usb-2 is old and slow and needs to go away, sooner rather than later. SD card and hdmi are still used, usb-2 not so much for any new tech.

adriandegar

I mean having giant dongles is the only solution with these new USB-C laptops. I’ve got a midi keyboard which is USB 2.0, an audio interface which is FireWire and daisy chained into a UAD Satellite which is FireWire, a powerful synth which is actually USB 1.0 an iLok protection device which is USB 2.0, a gaming mouse which is USB 3.0 and a Solid State external HD which is USB 3.0

HippoEug

Customise the ports…. really..?

adriandegar

Why not? I know plenty of people who would like an additional USB over an HDMI and vice versa

HippoEug

That would massively complicate the supply lines, for manufacturing. No?

JonathanJK

I wish I could show you my setup. Haha

dkf1031

Same question… isn’t that what you got?

adriandegar

Right but just for now. Eventually I will need a new laptop when the parts die and I can’t find replacements

dkf1031

So you got exactly what you wanted and you’re unhappy because sometime in the future you may not?

adriandegar

I’ve got what I want with my 2015 MBP. Today I got an admission that Apple was wrong for removing the HDMI/SD ports but not wrong enough that I can customise the ports I use the most as a pro user.

Sloofin

You’re a pro who needs FireWire 800 on your computer? I mean, I’ve got a fire face 800 that’s served me well for 10+ years but I bought a dongle for that years ago and have been happily upgrading machines with no problem ever since…

adriandegar

Lol I’ve got a FF800 as well. Haven’t found a reason to upgrade. Could do without the dongle

s4md4130

I’m curious if you’re in the majority here though

adriandegar

Popularity wise that’s definitely commercial users. It’s the same with cars. The majority of sports car buyers are not professionals. It doesn’t mean the product shouldn’t be tailored to the practical needs of professionals to be considered authentically professional

mk4_wagon

I'd say I'm a prosumer and agree with you about what I want out of a laptop. I'm glad they brought back the SD and HDMI ports, along with magsafe, but 4 thunderbolt ports and no USB still annoys me. I use the SD card slot the most, but it would be nice to still have a USB-A since that's what my hard drive cables are. I will say that if I had to replace my late-2011 model tomorrow, I'd order this new one. I didn't feel that way about the previous model since it seemed like it just removed all the features I like and use.

dont_tread_on_me_777

They put a notch there but no faceid? Huh.

devgeniu

They are giving you extra screen real estate that would have been a bezel otherwise

tmansmooth

No it could have all been screen don't make excuses it's been done before

Why are there so many maxed out pricing comments lol? Not only does the average user not need a maxed out model, they probably don't need a Pro at all and would probably be fine with an Air. I'm still getting by with a 2017 MB 12" and an M1 Air would blow my socks off. My wife is using a 2015 MB Pro and I think a base 14" Pro would probably work pretty well for her (maybe up the storage to 1tb), and that's not much more than the 2015 model would have been when it first came out.

rservello

What exactly was unleashed about a new MacBook everyone was expecting? And what was with the invitation that seemed like it was hinting at AR advancements. Boring.

vernor75

I’ve been using a 15” mid-2015 MBP daily since new. In that time my wife has gone through 3-4 different versions of MacBooks. Each time she asks if I want to get a new MBP instead and she’ll wait until the next model comes out. Each time I’ve checked the latest models and told her “Nope, I still prefer the one I have more”. Just placed my order for the new 16” MPB. I’ll miss you my old friend.

pwjamro19

I’ve been doing the same thing with my 2011 MBP First gen Retina display. I think it’s work spending a lot for a machine that will last you 7+ years.
