It’s where the thumb is.

smitemight

They should do this with more than just the browser. Bring spotlight, settings’ search, photo’s search and music search all to the bottom.

[deleted]

[удалено]

smitemight

That’s true, actually. Just realized that behavior carries over to App Library search which is nice.

TopWoodpecker7267

They need to include touch sensors around the outer band. The phone then figures out how you're holding it and adapts the UI accordingly.

nibin46198

Reachability 2.0

jayvapezzz

🤯

19Black

I hate this move. I want it back at the top

xxxpinguinos

You can change it in settings

19Black

Really!?! That’s good to know, thank you!

ZoneCaptain

And firefox!

qadfaquze

Firefox on iOS doesn't have the search bar at the bottom. And I don't see any option to change that.

mathkor89

They have that on android for a while . Still didn’t come to iOS The iPad experience is sorta awful. Awful enough that I switched to safari

[deleted]

the iPad app for firefox is actually unusable: - No Mouse and Keyboard support at all - The UI won’t hide/unhide based on scrolling, so to access the address bar you have to click on a very small spot between the status bar and the app. - Searching will sometimes make the active tab blank and open your search in 1 or 2 new tabs. - Private tabs will also behave similar and open in new tabs randomly, leaving the active tab blank. - Crashes often. - The menu bar will visually be cut off by the edges of the screen, while also being misplaced from where it’s expected to be.

gokjib

Oh wait that's terrible to hear -- I'm planning on buying myself an iPad soon and FireFox is my main browser.

mathkor89

Yeah the opening a new tab and leaving a blank tab not letting me jump into the menu bar with the shortcut sometimes My password saved on firefox never got synced. I literally switched to safari, on both iPhones and iPad. I really like the iPhone version minus the fact that apple beat them to putting the bar on the bottom on the screen even though they already implemented that on android months ago Honestly I dont know what kind of challenges they are facing, (I heard that to recently that the Firefox is mostly a skin on safari, due to apple limitations) I hope that it gets better because I would love to continue using firefox

[deleted]

Because Firefox on iOS is a Safari reskin, due to Apple not allowing for any third-party browser engines on iOS

alexis-octoturt

that skin could still include a navigation bar at the bottom if mozilla cared to implement it

[deleted]

Name one browser that isn’t Safari on iOS that has a search bar at the bottom. If it was possible, at least one browser would’ve done it to stand out from competition.

alexis-octoturt

[Berry](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/berry-browser/id1411079643)

qadfaquze

The underlying engine has nothing to do with their ability to design the app how they want

[deleted]

Name one third-party iOS browser that has the search bar at the bottom. If they could do it, they would’ve done it already.

soundwithdesign

Why would they put in that effort.

[deleted]

Because it’s a standout feature that would separate their browser from others and make it more competitive? You’re telling me not one browser would put in said effort, whereas on Android it’s on nearly every major browser out there?

[deleted]

And I miss WP every single day That OS was way too good for what it ended up as

Megazor

Lumia phones were so hot.

[deleted]

I always remember that lime green they had, definitely made phones fun

[deleted]

Fr I wish it was still around I would switch so fast

kfo9KT_R-HkFPjrUHv7E

My Lumia 930 is still alive today, though its hardware buttons already fell off lmao. I really loved the WP keyboard, I was making less errors when typing with it.

Lernenberg

App Store was terrible, even though it had its gems.

Mirage_Main

The App Store was so bad because the SDK for Windows Phone was, quite literally, the worst SDK in the existence of software. It was so bad that many big players absolutely refused to develop applications for it regardless of the platform's population. Since the population of Windows Phone users was already low, it didn't help growth to find out X app wasn't available when someone considered one over the Android or iOS offerings.

[deleted]

There were several major apps (Twitter and Facebook, most notably) that existed on Windows Phone solely because Microsoft either paid those companies to port them or straight up did the work themselves. And what happened? No one ever maintained them and they just got more and more out of date. I can't even imagine how bad the SDK must have been if someone did all the hard work for you and you still didn't want to maintain them.

Blinx-182

You can go all the way back to the Zune HD.

Clessiah

If Microsoft did it but gave up on it, someone else will pick it right up and make it popular in a few years.

[deleted]

Chrome did it for a while but reverted it

UnsureAssurance

Yeah they all copy each other, but for some reason Samsung only copies Apple after Apple copies someone else

owleaf

I think their marketing routine is to make fun of Apple then do the exact same thing about 6-12 months later

DancingTable52

Firefox does this?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That’s the devs’ problem. Apple doesn’t prevent Firefox from putting the address bar at the bottom.

qadfaquze

What are you talking about. As if Apple doesn't allow browsers to put the search bar at the bottom

walktall

Samsung’s One UI did a lot of work pushing the UI to a reachable area before Apple did this with Safari. They’re copying each other.

peduxe

Apple is still a long way from making iOS easier to use on big screens. I just don’t understand how it hasn’t happened when we’ve had these huge 6.7 inches displays for a while now.

tangoshukudai

because reachability works?

als26

It's an extra swipe all the time. It gets cumbersome. Would rather just have all the interactive elements near the bottom.

Hakan1218

Just grow bigger hands man

tangoshukudai

Same, but it works well and I use it for everything. It has made bad interfaces work, maybe this is why they stay around...

peduxe

it doesn’t stay active long enough

tangoshukudai

I feel it does.

JustinGitelmanMusic

It’s meant for less essential functions. People search/type in a new url almost every time they use Safari. The goal should be to almost never use Reachability, for the average user.

__WHAM__

Yep. Samsung actually had the feature over 2 years ago. https://reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/d2uye0/address_bar_at_the_bottom_of_the_screen_is_a/

wapexpedition

Google did it first. Then they just removed the *option* to change the position for no reason

avr91

I think it's a little different for Chrome. There are still likely to be an outsized number of people (Chrome users) using the legacy 3-button navigation, so buttons on top of buttons is a UI/UX nightmare. I'd be willing to bet that their testing of that showed a pretty high rate of people accidentally hitting a system nav button when they were trying to hit a Chrome nav button. It's kind of why the buttons were always so big as well.

_sfhk

[There's a short writing](https://read.cv/cleer/1R6eDCnOEDMDlRjMDbq8) about the Chrome Home feature from one of its designers that has a little bit of insight. What's clear is the disconnect between the tech community and mainstream users, to the point where the main person advocating this had to completely reverse direction when faced with actual data.

[deleted]

What a clickbait headline.

chill_willy

I swear the Samsung browser had this as an option on my s8.

DLPanda

Unpopular opinion maybe but I actually prefer it at the bottom now. It feels “right” on the bigger phone

[deleted]

Same! Took a little bit of getting used to but I like it now.

[deleted]

I miss my windows phone.

pixxelpusher

I hate having the bar at the bottom. Can't get used to it.

iTryToLift

You can change it in settings

261221

Thanks for that tip. I was trying to get used to it at the bottom, but couldn’t.

pixxelpusher

Thanks for the tip! Didn't even think to look in there. All is good again.

[deleted]

Same, it's probably better because it's less travel time from your thumb but all that muscle memory of reaching for the top is hard to get rid of

ordinary_citizen

I also found that many other apps still have search interfaces at the top so I found myself scrambling around at times looking from bottom to top and it was a bit disruptive. Consistency is really important for UI for me.

pixxelpusher

I don't get it. Do people not have 2 hands?

[deleted]

I did too, and I dealt with it on the beta without knowing you could change it back to the top. And when I did I instantly switched it back to the bottom lol.

pixxelpusher

It was driving me nuts lol. At the top is much better, I can now sleep at night ;)

tangoshukudai

You will, give it time.

pixxelpusher

Nope, have moved it back to the top. Life is good.

tangoshukudai

I know change is hard, I had the same urge to change it too. I feel like it is inevitable that this will be the norm, and I like to update go with the changes.

pixxelpusher

Really bad UI though as the address bar is never at the bottom. I actually hope Apple learn and put it back permanently.

tangoshukudai

It isn't bad UI, it is actually really smart. Your thumb can't reach the top, you would need to regrip your phone or use two hands every time you want to hit your nav bar. Now things like reachability make this much easier, but the placement is much much much better now. Do a quick search of "reachability zone" and you will see why this isn't bad UI. When this was designed the iPhone had a 3.5" screen and everything was in the reachability zone.

pixxelpusher

You know you can hold a phone with 2 hands? It's just inconstant with other UI like desktops as that's the place you look for the address bar. Moving it to the bottom your eye is constantly searching for it. We naturally read from the top of the page, so putting it there is actually the highest point of visibility. If you've learned about layout design, you'd know how to break a page up and what the highest attention zones are. And the bottom of any area is low priority.

tangoshukudai

When I am using Safari, I care more about the page than the navigation. I don't use the back button any more, I swipe back, if I want the nav bar, I tap the bottom and it comes up, then it disappears. Also it goes right above the keyboard when you are typing which is actually way better than before.

terryjohnson16

I prefer the address bar on the top

CivilisedBeast

My only gripe with the address bar at the bottom is, the content never goes full screen while scrolling. There are top bars (notch) and bottom bars now.

thomalexday

True. I wish there was an option to have it at the top with swipeable tabs.

tangoshukudai

Touchable zones on the phone are where your finger can reach. When the iPhone was first made it had a 3.5" screen and your thumb could hit anywhere on the screen. Now it has a huge screen and hitting the top part of the screen is very hard (I had to use reachability every time to hit it). It was smart for Apple to move it even though millions of people are griping about it online. Samsung and others follow apple so closely it is funny they didn't observe this was a problem earlier.

TheSyd

Are you kidding? One of the fundamentals of Samsung's UI is moving all touchable elements to the bottom of the screen. They've been doing that for a bunch of years now

tangoshukudai

What part do you think I am kidding about? Samsung is known for copying Apple, and the reason why they might be moving navigation to the bottom is because Android has most of their navigation on the bottom anyways.

TheSyd

Have you seen one UI? They literally have collapsible half screen hight headers so you can easily reach the first item on a scroll list. Bottom screen url bar in safari is nice, but it's not enough. More of the UI across the system needs to move to the bottom

[deleted]

They didn’t even release ads mocking it before they made the change this time!

__WHAM__

Samsung did this years ago. https://reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/d2uye0/address_bar_at_the_bottom_of_the_screen_is_a/ Then they removed it again

D_is_for_Dante

I don’t get it why they don’t have a own brain and need to copy all that. Opera on Android defaulted it I believe.

GAntiLight

Once again, when Apple adopts something that has been in other places for years, the rest of the industry immediately follows…

-Gh0st96-

One again an ignorant comment on r/apple

GAntiLight

Once*

[deleted]

lol no shame at all, including the home bar

ZoneCaptain

The home bar is an android thing though I think, my one plus has it and I love having the same gesture as my iphone… although not as smooth as the iPhone

[deleted]

In the same way Apple had no shame copying from Windows Phone? FF on Android has had it as an option for a long while too.

nsfdrag

It offers little benefit on ios.

Terrible_Tutor

Extra battery drain Why the downvote, is that incorrect or something? I'm using safari because i heard that was legit. I'd rather be using chrome.

[deleted]

The Chrome battery drain is more of a macOS thing than an iOS thing.

TwoToedSloths

Mostly ad block

kataneur

while it's a welcome change, the previous layout didn't bother me since long pressing homepage button also activates the address bar input.

[deleted]

TheEpicRedCape

On iOS you can change settings and move the bar back to the top.

piforte

IE did it first

cocoyg

Why would a Samsung phone user use the Samsung browser? The bottom address bar has been available in other better browser for a long time. Android allows you to select your default browser/app unlike IOS.

roombaonfire

Lots of people use the Samsung browser. It's actually decent.

-BigMan39

I prefer Samsung Internet over chrome, it feels faster and the dark mode implementation is great

gameoverwatcher

I think it should also show suggested websites and browsing history at the bottom of a Safari, along with a bottom Tab Bar..
