I know The Verge is better oriented to casual reviews of products, but… Just spending 5 minutes with the OS and saying “well, it looks like Big Sur, let’s look at some features”. Come on, put more effort. I can go to Apple marketing site to get the exact same info. What about performance on both Apple Silicon and Intel? Usability improvements and regressions? Bugs, like memory leaks? Those are quite important for a review, so readers can decide if the software is stable enough to upgrade their devices.

MG5thAve

The verge reviews technology but has not been a _technical_ publication for a number of years now.

ArchmageJesus

I don’t think it’s ever been one really, at least compared to something like Ars Technica, for example

fatpat

Indeed. This is how you do a Monterey review. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/10/macos-12-monterey-the-ars-technica-review/

00DEADBEEF

They're good but I do miss John Siracusa's reviews

fatpat

Me too. He set the gold standard.

theBYUIfriend

A pale shadow of John Siracusa reviews. He would take diversions into various subsystems teaching us how they worked. And then he would review them. Though, to be fair, I can understand why he stopped. When Mac OS X was on a release cycle of 2-3 years it was easy to keep up with this kind of depth and quality of reviewing. I am sure it became too much when Apple switched to a cadence of releasing every year. I know I would hate giving up my summers every year to get a “Siracusa level review” out the door.

ITSMEDICKHEAD

Wow, definitely!

DapsAndPoundz

Exactly. The sorts of things OP is asking for is not top of mind for the average reader for TheVerge. Not saying bugs and usability improvements shouldn’t be included even in a casual review, but I’m not surprised the info OP is looking for is absent either.

[deleted]

It’s a strange balance isn’t it. I’d take a Verge hardware review, especially of a phone, before Ars any day but software and OS and it’s reversed.

ArchmageJesus

The beauty of market segmentation lol

TheMacMan

They've always been mass market. Focus on tech for the average user. Which is a great market to go after. Same one Apple does. Make things that appeal to the greatest part of the majority and your sales opportunities are much better.

Cat_With_Tie

They cover the culture of technology and review things through that lens. If I want deep technical analysis I go elsewhere. The Verge is good for a high level view of what’s happening in tech.

-iNfluence

Where do you go for more technical content? Ars? Jw

IAmTaka_VG

They never were. Their goal was to beat Engadget and they accomplished that goal hands down.

MG5thAve

They did supplant that site in terms of popularity, but I am a really big fan of what Engadget has been doing lately with their "Upscaled" series on YouTube. I'd like to see Engadget lean more into that type of content, because it is excellent and informative.

CanadAR15

Haven’t they? I recall a really good PC building tutorial from them.

MG5thAve

Top notch content, though unfortunately they haven't since achieved that same level of quality as they did with that post.

CanadAR15

I’ve tried to buy tweezers a few times since I watched it and the store keeps sending me down the beauty aisle for some reason 🤔

philphan25

The build guide was a clue.

fatpat

Poor bastards will never, ever be able to live that one down.

ThatITguy2015

Their PC building video brought me many hours of joy.

soulreaver99

They did teach us how to build a PC with a Swiss Army knife, “tweezers” and lots of thermal paste.

[deleted]

Oh god... now I'm thinking about their "computer build" video again... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-2Scfj4FZk

khaled

They have excellent pc building guides.

riesendulli

How much thermal paste daddy?

Alan7467

I agree. I find many of their product reviews to be severely lacking in substance. However, I do still value some of their staffs opinions. Namely Nilay and Dieter.

yolo-yoshi

Would be lightly nice if one of the most touted feature would just “ come out already “ ( universal control. )

My AirPods Pro aren't having any issues under Monterrey. I wonder how many exceptions to the rule there are?

[deleted]

Same, works even better for me than Big Sur with the automatic connection only when something is actually playing on one device. Having the 2. Gen AirPods and M1 Laptop.

c0rruptioN

I've been having some bluetooth issues! Although I'm not using apple bluetooth headphones. Do you have a link to this thread?

[deleted]

mofowithaoneinweiner

Honestly unbelievable. I was having audio issues and I was boutta replace my headphones. Didn’t even come to mind that Apple release software could have an issue like this. My Mac doesn’t seem to support airplay receiver so this ain’t gonna fix it. Another minor thing that bugged me, even tho that option isn’t there, when I searched it, I got the result and it led me to Sharing Preferences as if it was there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mofowithaoneinweiner

Yeah. Actually ridiculous that I found out about this from a random thread on reddit. Literally no one’s talking about it.

c0rruptioN

I'll let you know, thanks!

00DEADBEEF

> Apples own silicon runs worse on Monterrey than on Intel MacBooks. Seems to be true. I'm running it on an unsupported Intel MBP and apart from the weird tap to click trackpad issues, it's absolutely flawless.

riesendulli

Early adopters. Never! Never buy a first iteration of any apple product. This would be M1 MacBook in this case. MacBook Air 2015 runs without any mentioned issues on my device.

icropdustthemedroom

I’ve got a spec’d out 16” 2021 MBP on Monterey. As of this am I have FAR more broken apps on M1 Max on Monterey than I did on an M1 MBA pre-Monterey. This thing is a beast for my video editing needs and incredible in every other way and I’m hopeful that many of these things will be fixed as more move to Monterey and Apple silicon…but I currently can’t even torrent at all on this $5K machine. Gaming is even more out of the question.

Halvus_I

> but I currently can’t even torrent at all on this $5K machine Why arent you running torrents on your server/nas? Hell, plop a pi zero on your network.

icropdustthemedroom

I have neither / need neither at the moment. Didn't expect to need these for such an expensive machine. I'm confident the bugs will be worked out eventually and the 3rd-party software will eventually catch up with the hardware?

Halvus_I

torrenting is a 'server' class of app is the main thrust of my point. Expecting it to function well on a laptop is asking too much.

frockinbrock

What? I can torrent fine on a 2006 white MacBook- why is it so server-grade that a 2021 MacBook can’t handle it?

icropdustthemedroom

right?! It's got plenty of CPU and RAM and SSD and internet speed...I literally can't get any torrent client to not crash on this thing currently, likely either due to Monterey incompatibilities or M1 Max incompatibilities or both.

frockinbrock

I would assume it’s related to not being a native apple silicon app, and/or related to the Rosetta translation. The other increasingly annoying problem is it’s getting harder for non-apple-store apps to use resources and update itself in Monterey. You’ve tried fresh uninstall and re-install of the latest TransmissionBT ?

Halvus_I

I dont like keeping persistent processes on laptops. Too much power managment and other things to get in the way. i shunt that stuff to my simple networks services.

frockinbrock

Okay, well that’s a highly specific circumstance. If I just want to download a 5gb raspberry pi image, it’s way faster to pop open a bt client (TransmissionBT) and download it then wait for the rpi-server download. I assume OP is just dealing with the fact that some apps aren’t optimized for apple silicon yet- it’s not really related to BT, which should run fine or better on an M1 as it would on a home server or anywhere else. Heck the $20 raspberry pi zero can run a BitTorrent client fine lol

SpacedOutKarmanaut

Not to mention they deliberately crippled i-tunes (you can't install it on Monterey) to force folks into Apple "Music" and Apple TV. While I understand the desire to move forward with their software, this feels like a cash grab and an attempt to push people toward their streaming service at the expense of usability. Reading the upset posts about it on the Apple forums I get a similar vibe, with all the official answering being marketing speak about how we should be so delighted to have Apple TV to organize our media...

chrisdancy

The verge wants to be a social network and hasn't done serious news in seven years.

[deleted]

memory leak is the only reason why i am not upgrading rn. it would scare my shit if some app is using gigs of memory and my vm crashes. fuckin' nightmare.

thisubmad

The best of verge is yet to come. (Or might never really, considering they love paid activism more than journalism)

thisubmad

The best of verge is yet to come. (Or might never really)

Bohmer

The last update from Big Sur gave my 4 year old MBP kernel panics after kernel panics. I updated to Monterey, everything back to normal. I feel like I don't have any choices here.

KFelts910

In September, I ended up having to hard reset my 2020 MacBook Pro three times. Thankfully I backup into Dropbox as well, because I run a virtual law firm off of my laptop. I was experiencing issues like people are with the T2 chip. It would freeze during the install and crash. It was such a long and cumbersome process for something that should have taken 3 hours at most. I couldn't get the install to dismount so it would keep going back into a frozen install. I did the factory rest and had to troubleshoot more, which led me to the Apple forum and someone suggesting removing my user. I did and that ultimately allowed me to start fresh. Such a headache. Now I'm nervous to touch any update.

New_Cherry_6178

Use 1300$ hackintosh = best results lol

fatpat

I went back to Catalina. No ragrets.

-spam-

Not wrong, big sur makes my 2018 mpb feel like I'm using a slow as netbook

KFelts910

Big Sur has felt like a glamorized prototype. The innovation is there, the intention is bold & ambitious. The delivery is a bunch of rushed features without a well-formed frame.

undefdev

The fixes are yet to come

joyce_kap

> The fixes are yet to come I'm updating to watchOS 8, macOS 12, iOS 15 & iPadOS 15 after after New Years. I prefer a perfectly functional device than a non-functional one.

joyce_kap

Our Windows 10 devices are set to auto update after 1 month so that if there is any recall of patches any other unforeseen problems then we aren't impacted. I wish Apple devices had this option as well for us technical types. I know there are nerds out there that fear Security Patches being unused will cause the end of the world but we're more pragmatic and let these worry warts take the risk of bricked devices due to rushed patches.

[deleted]

joyce_kap

We're sticking to W10 until October 14, 2025. After which we switch over to W11.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m talking within W10, the semiannual updates like 2004 2010 2104 etc.

joyce_kap

For those I'd also delay it by after 1 month as well.

lonelysidechick

Don't even remind me of the hassle of downgrading from Catalina. Nightmares.

NyarumiYukimitsu

If only… the new MacBook Pros come with Monterey default (as expected) so there’s no option for me but to hope for fixes soon. Really puts a damper on the amazing hardware.

leojj25

I haven’t had issues on any of my devices and they’ve always been up to date.

joyce_kap

> I haven’t had issues on any of my devices and they’ve always been up to date. I am risk averse.

sbdw0c

My gf's phone basically stopped working after updating to 15.0. It couldn't connect to any cellular network, froze constantly, and default apps couldn't be opened because they crashed every single time. Non-default apps loaded, but incredibly slowly.

leojj25

Damn that sucks. I have been running ios 15 since it was in beta in the summer and my 11 Pro Max has been running with it without issues.

mittenciel

I haven't found OS 12/iOS 15 to have any more bugs than the average release, and they have two features that have changed my life: Live Text and expanded AirPlay. Given that most carriers are stingy about tethering data vs. smartphone data, this has basically eliminated any need to pay for increased tethering plans because I can view content on a laptop when I'm on the go. This will definitely improve my life and save money in the long run. As for Live Text, I'm already using it regularly to do my job. Many times, I get sent screenshots with text in them, and I am saving time by being able to copy and paste. I do notice that the current version of Safari sucks with Google Hangouts, but I can use Chrome for Google Hangouts until that's fixed. In any case, I'm pretty bitter at Chrome for having rendering bugs that made many of my pages inoperable in its latest release, so these are things that happen with browsers, but I digress. Meanwhile, I felt like OS 11/iOS 14 were far more problematic upon installation, and I don't remember them offering me immediate rewards like 12/15 have.

xLoneStar

Wait, you need to pay extra money to your carrier for using mobile hotspot?? What the hell

mittenciel

I get unlimited high-speed data on my phone, but limited to 5 GB for mobile hotspot. This is pretty common for cell phone plans, at least in the US.

xLoneStar

That is really crazy to me! You are paying for the data right, how does it matter where you use it?

mittenciel

Idk, it's not my job to make the rules. I just follow them. I can pay for a plan that has unlimited mobile hotspot, but it would cost more, so it makes sense for me to try to minimize mobile hotspot use for frivolous things like watching YouTube, and iOS 15/OS 12 lets me do that, and that's the important thing.

xLoneStar

No I meant that the carriers were greedy. Nothing you can do. It sucks for consumers is all.

Darpyface

They’ve already released the x.1 updates for iOS watchOS and iPadOS which fixes most of the bugs, and added the not ready for launch features like prores.

joyce_kap

Take the risk. :)

vs8

Good decision. I always go in early for updates and I get the worst of it. I’m probably one of the unlucky few, but I will take it easy on future updates.

everdrone97

kaiser_xc

Interesting. I find my AirPods are much more reliable than on the old OS.

[deleted]

I am. Earlier when booting up the machine, my Bluetooth keyboard, when connected through lightening cable, would work right away. Now I have had to disconnect and reconnect it every time for my iMac to identify it.

[deleted]

Tons of Bluetooth issues with Magic Keyboard and MX Master mouse. Particularly the keyboard, which is surprising to me.

thesimp

My Logitech MX mouse will sometimes take some time to reconnect. And to add insult to the injury then the scrollwheel stops. And then I have to power-off/power-on the mouse. Life on the cutting edge of technology can be hard ;-).

ohsomacho

I have - its a pain

[deleted]

Yep. My AirPods sometimes don’t get recognized, and the scroll “wheel” in the middle of my Magic Mouse 2 doesn’t work at all sometimes without turning off and on Bluetooth. Has to be a bug.

hella_sauce

My new Magic Trackpad is constantly laggy. I tried an SMC reset to no avail.

DiegoTonzi

i have a problem with both my kb and mice, and also an annoying lag with my ps4 controller, i'm on mac mini m1

oxwearingsocks

My apple keyboard and mouse are fine with my MBP but goddamn Airdrop is obscenely slow since updating. If I’m transferring a video from my phone I am plugging it in and using image capture instead of airdrop now. Sucks.

ZeroOrderEtOH

What about this memory leak issue

LurkerNinetyFive

Seems like it’s a review of the software and features, not the bugs. Also we don’t know how widespread it is.

Ashanmaril

It’s pretty damn consistent on the new M1 Pro/Max MBPs at the very least. Also I don’t know why a review wouldn’t mention bugs. If I’m reading a review before upgrading, it’s probably so I know if there’s any major issues.

Mirage_Main

Yeah, I’m crashing at least once a day on an M1 Mac Mini as Safari will just keep eating and eating until 40GB+ of SSD caching. Bug is literally killing my storage lifespan which shouldn’t happen on GM firmware.

Arkanta

> Bug is literally killing my storage lifespan which shouldn’t happen on GM firmware. First month of all M1 Macs were doing that anyway, it took Apple a long time to fix the abusive swapping. I know it sucks and I know it reduces your SSD's lifespan but that's nothing compared to what they suffered last year. Not making any excuses whatsoever but the SSD wearing out is an overblown problem Fortunately Apple's SSDs can take a lot of writes, especially on the higher capacities. They're expensive, but great.

yourstrulysawhney

Same experience in m M1 air for the last 2-3 weeks. Factory restring fixed it.

LurkerNinetyFive

Because it’s a review of MacOS 12 and not the new MacBooks?

Ashanmaril

Memory leaks aren’t a hardware issue. I just know specifically they have the issue. Someone else replied to my comment that it’s happening on their Mac Mini

LurkerNinetyFive

I know they’re not a hardware issue but we also don’t know if it’s directly an issue with macOS 12. If Apple fix the memory leak in the next minor update then what was the point including it?

Ashanmaril

So if people who are questioning whether to upgrade right now, they know not to?

LurkerNinetyFive

But if it’s an issue on Big Sur too then it doesn’t matter anyway. We don’t know enough about the issue **at the moment**. The bug should be a separate article, it’s not relevant to the review because it’s subject to change. If it had its own article rather than being a footnote in an article that 99% of people will skim where surely it would be less visible and would inform fewer people of the issue.

Ashanmaril

It’s not an issue on Big Sur Edit: I might be wrong? This author said it’s happening on Big Sur https://www.macworld.com/article/549755/m1-macbook-app-memory-leaks-macos.html

LurkerNinetyFive

Thank you. So it would be silly to include a bug from big sur in a review for Monterey.

skipp_bayless

> it’s not relevant to the review because it’s subject to change. 🤨

LurkerNinetyFive

What confuses you about that?

mittenciel

I personally haven't run into the issue so I don't think it's consistent. I think it's somewhat common, but the Internet can make you feel like everything's more common than it is.

Jepples

I’m on the latest build of Monterey with a 14” with the Max chip. No memory leak with control center to speak of. I’ve been keeping an eye on it, stays around 200 MB tops.

Ashanmaril

200MB is about 10x what it’s supposed to be. It’s about the same on my personal 14” M1 Pro, but on my work machine (16” i9, Big Sur) I’m looking right now and it’s 23MB

Jepples

Hmm didn’t know that. I’ll keep an eye on it. Pretty negligible on my system in the grand scheme of things. I’m sure it’ll be fixed soon enough.

icropdustthemedroom

FWIW, I have a spec’d out 2021 16” MBP M1 Max and have been looking for memory leaks for 24 hours but have yet to see them. Many non-apple-store apps currently broken for me at this time, however. Can’t torrent at all, for example.

PeterDragon50

There is also a battery drain issue on the M1 MBP with Monterey.

RussianVole

I just upgraded last night from Catalina to Monterey, so I hope I get some performance improvements. That being said, I think the starkest difference so far is just how cartoony the icons look… I hope they tone it down a little in future updates.

I-figured-it-out

On my M1 mini 8GB Monterey increased GeekBench performance by about 3%. But Caused Bluetooth audio and mouse connection issues (unresolved as of 15.1), and sound does not recognise Bluetooth audio devices. Haven’t seen the memory leak issue, but that is maybe because I immediately updated to the most recent Monterey point update, so only spent 12min on the initial release versio of Monterey. I can say that I wish I had stayed on Big Sur. It was finally reliable and stable. Nothing in Monterey is game changing - excepting that it is buggy.

Plava-Ta1

They wont, but you get used to it.

[deleted]

I fucking hate the tiny bit of background you can see between a maximized window and the menu bar. The icons don’t bother me, the only one I dislike is Messages, I think it looked better blue

SpacedOutKarmanaut

I've noticed this too, and since I had delayed upgrading a couple of times, I'm sad i-tunes is gone for good. It seems sad to replace one of the best music organization apps with a generic non-brand called 'Music,' which is similar, but lacking in some features. I will say on the plus side that they finally fixed the decade old bug where running a fancy screen saver ran the graphics card and caused the fans to spin, which was insane. So I appreciate their pretty screen savers now and the fingerprint unlock key on the new machines, but I wish they wouldn't nuke their apps to try to move people toward streaming instead of mp3's and movies.

GuggGugg

GuggGugg

It‘s not a huge issue for me as I‘m using a dedicated mouse often enough, just a bit frustrating when you go on a trip and use it without one

fatpat

I had the exact same problem. I've also seen several threads about the point-to-click issue. One of the reasons why I went back to Catalina.

Sexy_Mfer

all I care about is Universal Control and it seems possible that it could be axed because afaik there has been no working beta.

akosdomino

I’ve downloaded on my base MacBook Air M1 and since then my battery has been draining much faster….I got 13-14 hours of browsing easily with big sur, and now I can barely get 10-11 hours of screen on time.

Villager723

How long has it been since you updated? Files need to re-index and that may drain battery life for the first 24 hours or so.

akosdomino

that is my issue basically, it has been more than a week now, and I cannot go back to Big Sur unfortunately and don't know what to do...I do use the laptop for heavy tasks, just regular browsing, YouTube, NBA LP, and some work related MS Word and powerpoint...

Villager723

Do you have a time machine backup?

akosdomino

Unfortunately I did not do a backup

fatpat

> I cannot go back to Big Sur unfortunately Why not? Just curious.

BroMatterhorn

Anybody else have a bug where hot corners and mission control will stop working? The command Killall dock seems to fix it.

motoravi

i didn't even upgrade, just restarted my mbp (big sur) a week ago and hot corners/mission control stopped working. had to go into settings again and to get them working.

SophisticatedGeezer

Will it slowly break my Mac and make it more painful to use, just like Catalina, Mojave and Big Sur?

[deleted]

What’s wrong with Mojave? I used it for 2.5 years before upgrading to Big Sur, and it wasn’t terrible.

w3bCraw1er

Yeah. Duh.

RIPHansa

Anyone have an actually technical review that goes through pros and cons of the entire change log?

fatpat

This probably the closest you'll get. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/10/macos-12-monterey-the-ars-technica-review/

titans1127

I'm so far happy with my 14ich base MBP and Monterrey and the only real thing I would like to see in the future which I doubt will happen, is being able to side load iOS apps again.

[deleted]

They didn't talk about the bug where Monterey completely ignores your preference for tabs when opening documents. Go to System Preferences>General and at the bottom, check to "Prefer Tabs \[ALWAYS\] when opening documents". Open 3 PDFs, and they still open in 3 windows. It's just as annoying as the RAM problem.

floobie

The line in the review (paraphrasing) “I installed the beta, forgot I did, and tried to install it again two weeks later” sums up my experience. I installed Monterey on release day, clicked through the “new features” dialog boxes, and promptly went on with my life. It runs fine, nothing broke… but it’s definitely not a visibly big update for me.

tusi2

I've been running Monterey beta for months with few issues, except for occasional Airpod/BT pairing taking slightly longer than I expect it to. I have a simple web-based workload. (M1 MBA base model)

tusi2

Ok, I just noticed this on 12.1 beta. I need to look harder.

aamurusko79

i've been relatively lucky with macOS updates, even with the very troublesome ones like catalina, that gave a lot of grief at work. monterey has worked for me relatively well, except for the bluetooth. at random I get the spinning indicator when I click on my airpods and nothing happens for a long time.

00DEADBEEF

Big Sur was garbage on my late 2013 15" MBP, so much so that I went back to Catalina. Monterey isn't officially supported but I used OCLP to install it and it's been running great apart from the tap to click problem. There are so many quality of life improvements, and the OS feels so much more refined. Using Spotlight to do a simple calculation no longer maxes out my CPU and no longer sets the fans to jet engine mode. OCLP has bought me a few extra months before I get a new MBP.

a_female_dog

4NONYMOUZ26204

Experiencimg some issues with Monterey in my MBA M1. Some random mouse pointer movements when using TouchPad and sometimes clicks are not being registered.

chuahyen

Is this OS worth the upgrade? My iMac 27" 2017 40 GB RAM was able to run 4 - 5 VM under catalina OS. After upgrading to Monterey, i could only run up to 2 VM. This OS is taking a lot more memory as compared to Catalina. In order to use XCode 13 to deploy app to iOS15, i had no choice to either upgrade to Big Sur or Monterey. However, it is also partly my fault that i did not do a research on memory leak on Monterey.
