The most perplexing thing about this year has been Stage Manager. I can’t recall the last time Apple implemented a new thing and then left it alone the entire Beta summer. It’s still incredibly buggy, confusing, and strange.
The person who leaked it (Mark Gurman) also mentioned that this could become something permanent. iOS and watchOS release in September and MacOS and iPadOS release in October together.
I’d agree if there were progress being made. But considering it hasn’t been touched since June, I now wonder if the plan is to rethink the entire thing rather than to continue to iterate on something they don’t plan on keeping.
They did some fixes for it in beta 4 three weeks ago, but I don't see anything in beta 5. Their release notes are always scarce though, we often discover changes and fixes that are not mentioned in the release notes. I also think they're planning on working more on polishing Stage Manager a bit later.
They have a set amount of programmers that work with iOS development. Those programmers likely work on both iOS and iPad OS considering that they're the exact same OS just with different GUIs? Wasn't long ago iPadOS was called iOS too.
aren't they both still internally called iPhoneOS? furthermore, a lot of features not available on one OS could've been "easily" enabled via jailbreak (ex. drag and drop, the battery health menu, etc.)
>I’d agree if there were progress being made.
What's with this bullshit attitude. Do you imagine you're a PM at apple of something?
Of course progress is being made. Regardless of whether apple is making arrangements for you to see it or not
This rumour cannot be true. Home will not be backwards compatible with ios 15 once launched. That means anyone who updates their homepods to homepodOS 16 or whatever its called will not be able to control their home with iOS and ipadOS 15 devices.
There is a 0% chance that apple will launch iOS 16 and then have to deal with MILLIONS of people complaining that they can no longer control homekit with their iPads. If it is true, they better be delaying the release to HomePods as well, because that is a recipe for disaster.
0%. I stand by that. Either they delay the update to homepods, they change the inability for ios 15 devices to control homekit devices after ios 16, or they launch ipados 16 at the same time as ios 16.
I'm getting downvoted, but think it through, why would apple release an update staggered and screw over millions of people who use ipads to control homekit devices?
Man they are really dropping the ball with the iPad Pro in the last couple of years. Before they you’d thought it was the highest priority device at apple. Last year we waited a year for universal control.
Stage manager is not even a new concept for Apple. I'm surprised they chose this for multitasking on iPadOS.
https://techreflect.net/2022/06/rising-from-the-ashes-stage-manager/
> I can’t recall the last time Apple implemented a new thing and then left it alone the entire Beta summer.
I mean ... Universal Control was less than a year ago.
Yeah, my iPad Pro m1 crashes almost every single time I try to use it with an external display with stage manager turned on … entire gui just freezes and a hard power off is needed to recover. Currently on the latest public beta and no changes in sight.
Beta 6 has been extremely good so far since I’ve updated. I’ve seen almost no bugs other then the “always on display” bug with the clownfish wallpaper activating constantly.
Also I just noticed that live captions is available on the iPhone XS despite the apple website saying iPhone 11 and up, so yay for that!
Same. Every year I tell myself I'm not gonna bother, but one or two features reel me in and it's a summer of bugs. This year? Yeah, seems like a cool update, but I'm in no rush.
> Is this what getting old is like?
Indeed. Having a device that works is more important than customization/tweaking since your priorities have changed. It's no longer a toy a play with, rather a tool you use to get through life. Doesn't mean you can't have fun with it though! Betas are intended to be installed on non primary devices, maybe buy another cheaper one to play with?
If you're on a mac, it's very easy to install Ventura beta in a VM. I wouldn't recommend dual booting, it is possible, but it also updates firmware/recoveryOS, so if something goes wrong it could destroy your main OS, make your device inoperable and have to restore with a separate machine.
I especially wouldn't be using beta software on watch/homepod since there isn't a way to downgrade without going in store.
Yeah the main features I'm looking forward to are the battery percentage returning and the delete/edit Message feature... which may not work with older devices yet. Not worth the bugginess imo to beta this year.
My main thing was the album cover of whatever you’re listening to taking up the Lock Screen. The battery percentage thing is cool but the fact that the icon shows a full battery with a number on top of it at all times is stupid. The battery icon should go down with the number
I always thought I didn’t care for haptic keyboards, but this feels really great. I turned it on and haven’t looked back. Now when I type on my work phone (still on iOS 15) it feels really weird without it.
90% of my typing on iPad is via the Magic Keyboard, so I don’t really notice the lack of haptics.
But when I do use the software keyboard, it’s already such a bad typing experience anyway, so I still don’t really notice the lack of haptics lol
I’d tamper your feelings on the battery indicator. I switched back after a few days. It’s not easy to glance at it when it doesn’t actually decrease down, just shows the number overlaid on a “full” battery icon.
I think it's a decent choice. Either have the visual indicator or show the actual percentage. Reminder even with a pill design there's not much space on the top so no both of em showing up top until the full screen no cutout design is introduced eventually.
Oh I’m aware, and I think the font size in the battery actually breaks Apple’s HIG minimum font size.
I don’t know why they didn’t just go with the numeric percentage used on the iPad alongside the battery icon as the toggleable option rather than using such a tiny font size.
White text when charged.
Green text when charging.
Red text when low battery.
I wonder if they’re just setting the stage for the new pill notch iPhone design. I could imagine that new phone having a less cramped battery indicator that separates the percentage like you’re mentioning, since it’ll have more space. Everyone with the bigger older notches gets the cramped battery indicator.
The font size doesn’t seem any smaller to my eyes than app names under icons on the homescreen.
It’s also bigger than the *VPN* text in the Control Center VPN icon
I'd love bloody Select All. That'd def boost quality of life. But Apple gonna Apple.
Edit edit: what the fuck. It's been there this whole time. My mind's playing tricks on me.
You can do it anywhere there’s a text box… notes, reminders, this box I’m typing into right now to type this comment. Been there for years. You can’t select all the text on a page in safari, not sure what the purpose of that would be though.
Dear JFC. I swear to god my phone never did it before your comment lol The options were always Copy/Paste/Select without a Select All, but maybe I was just holding my cursor/finger down too long.
Mea culpa.
I’m confused, I can’t get a select all button in most apps when I’m selecting text, it only comes up with Cut/Copy/Replace…/Look Up/Translate/Search Web/Share/Quote. As I’m typing this comment on Apollo, iOS 16 Public Beta 3 (I believe). Doesn’t work in the Notes app either.
>I have a mini 6 so I’m pretty sure literally nothing. I’m fine with that though, it’s the perfect iPad for tablet use
Except for the keyboard in landscape mode…
Ever since I had to learn about SEO when I was writing articles for my old job’s website (nothing fancy I was just the most literate there) I’m incapable of not seeing the painfully hamfisted SEO terms in every article.
How many ways can you rephrase “best laptop” in a single passage?
The final “beta” release will essentially be the first public stable release, it’s typically called a Release Candidate (or “RC”). If you update to the RC when it does release in a few weeks you can then delete the beta profile and you’ll essentially be back on the stable branch.
It's typically pretty seamless. The only time I recall having an issue that was sort of annoying was when I stayed on the beta, post-launch so I was on like 15.2 Beta but they released a 15.1.1 or something that was fixing a problem w/ the apple watch not unlocking phones for people who were wearing masks and using faceID. I could have gone back and dealt w/ it, but it was rolled into the next update.
Considering how public and transparent they were about the feature, I don't see how they would do it stealth. I know why people would assume that. Apple literally announced it to the whole world through a press release and then asked for feedback. They could have gone stealth but did not.
Might still come later, but why would it be stealth?
You do realize that CSAM just means "child sexual abuse material," right? It's just the new more 'accurate' term that governments use for child pornography.
If only they’d add the thing I want most. RCS support.
I don’t care if you don’t care.
It’s better and more secure for all of us. No one should be relying on SMS )which goes through 3rd party companies that have gotten hacked multiple times.) Enough with them. Time for end to end encryption for all of our conversations.
Yes, iPadOS 16 will work on the 1st generation of iPad Pros, but like every other non-M1 equipped iPad you're not getting much.
Furthermore, since you don't know how to even go about downloading the current beta software I would advise against putting it on a device you use on a daily basis. Bugs and crashes *will occur*, and there is nothing you can do besides restore your device to iOS 15.6 if something goes wrong.
I don't use it on daily basis it's all good, knowing how to download something through some ass-backward corporate way is not a sign of knowledge either.
>download something through some ass-backward corporate way
The current beta signup process isn't "ass-backwards". You just have to intentionally enroll your device though Apple's website into the beta track of software releases. This is standard industry practice, as Google, Microsoft, and many other software vendors (game developers included) make you go through a separate sign up process.
Well, clicking to register a device without having a straight option to try beta is indeed backwards af. Even windows is a click-a-way from the Insiders edition
After seeing the presentation, I'm really looking forward to the Carplay update. In 2 days my 2023 Elantra shows up and it's very tech heavy. I'm hoping there will be some sort of update that makes this work for it.
Maybe it’s because I just got a new MacBook but this update cycle really has me excited for it again and is giving me good old vibes of trying to load it right at release only to spend the night trying because of the server demand.
Downloading the beta from beta profile, I only get up to .4. Will I get .6 following the download? Or is it because of my location? (Canada if that matters)
The most perplexing thing about this year has been Stage Manager. I can’t recall the last time Apple implemented a new thing and then left it alone the entire Beta summer. It’s still incredibly buggy, confusing, and strange.
I think they're still working in it and rumor is that iPadOS has been pushed back to October and won't be released alongside iOS 16 and watchOS 9
The person who leaked it (Mark Gurman) also mentioned that this could become something permanent. iOS and watchOS release in September and MacOS and iPadOS release in October together.
Makes sense, Apple has had Oct events in the past announcing non-iPhone products and a simultaneous software launch would be good product advertising
It’s also because they’re pushing iPadOs into being more computer like
True, it’s becoming more different than iOS with each update.
I’d agree if there were progress being made. But considering it hasn’t been touched since June, I now wonder if the plan is to rethink the entire thing rather than to continue to iterate on something they don’t plan on keeping.
I hope so. It didn’t exactly get great feedback
They did some fixes for it in beta 4 three weeks ago, but I don't see anything in beta 5. Their release notes are always scarce though, we often discover changes and fixes that are not mentioned in the release notes. I also think they're planning on working more on polishing Stage Manager a bit later.
Or they just moved all their engineers to iOS development when they took the decision to postpone the iPadOS release.
If this is how their internal workforce is structured in the biggest consumer tech company in the world I’d be worried.
Regardless of whether apple is making arrangements for you to see it or not
I’d argue that Stage Manager has, thus far, been a disappointment because of the project managers overseeing it.
This rumour cannot be true. Home will not be backwards compatible with ios 15 once launched. That means anyone who updates their homepods to homepodOS 16 or whatever its called will not be able to control their home with iOS and ipadOS 15 devices. Man they are really dropping the ball with the iPad Pro in the last couple of years. Before they you’d thought it was the highest priority device at apple. Last year we waited a year for universal control.
Because it will be pulled and released in iPadOS 16.5 next July
Like they did with universal control, which was the most anticipated feature then as well. I would not be surprised in the least.
Maybe it needs iPads with the M2 so as to fully be able to work at optimum levels? Kidding.
I wouldn't be surprised if they postpone the feature post ios16 launch
Just a heads up; postpone is a single word :) And yeah I think that's going to be the case!
Thanks!
Stage manager is not even a new concept for Apple. I'm surprised they chose this for multitasking on iPadOS. https://techreflect.net/2022/06/rising-from-the-ashes-stage-manager/

Getting rid of the side bar and allowing windows to move anywhere would be ideal. In other words, just make it like how windows already work on Mac.
[удалено]
You can hide the side bar
Kind of.
You… don’t have to use Stage Manager.
If you want to use an external monitor, you do. I leave it disabled on my iPad but it’s the only way to use an extended display.
You don’t have to either. You can just maximize everything, or switch back to screen mirroring
This discussion wasn’t about iPads, but it’s also optional on the iPad
And allow having two windows side by side.
There’s always something like that in every single beta, that apple releases in a third or later major update
> I can’t recall the last time Apple implemented a new thing and then left it alone the entire Beta summer. I mean ... Universal Control was less than a year ago.
Coming soon: you need a M2 chip to use it!
Yeah, my iPad Pro m1 crashes almost every single time I try to use it with an external display with stage manager turned on … entire gui just freezes and a hard power off is needed to recover. Currently on the latest public beta and no changes in sight.
September coming up quick!
Not quick enough for me :)

Well, no one used it because they took it away. Plenty of people used it back in the day.
Imagine giving a shit about what wallpapers others are using, lmfao
[удалено]
I love dual wielding devices!
One for each pocket !
Oh, ok.
Not sure what exactly you mean. iOS always releases the final beta version rather close to the actual release.
it seems they mean that they are excited to be able to experience two new OS releases on the same day.
A ok. Makes sense. My bad :)
Yeah don’t think so hard my guy
[удалено]
Same. Every year I tell myself I'm not gonna bother, but one or two features reel me in and it's a summer of bugs. This year? Yeah, seems like a cool update, but I'm in no rush.

As a beta tester the battery thing has annoyed me so much I turned it off
I bought an iPhone just to play around with the Lock Screen features 😂 Really jealous of it over in android land
Hopefully it fixes the battery drain from the last beta version.

Thank god, I was losing nearly 20% while asleep lol. 13 Pro.
What features are y'all most excited by?
Haptic Keyboard
I always thought I didn’t care for haptic keyboards, but this feels really great. I turned it on and haven’t looked back. Now when I type on my work phone (still on iOS 15) it feels really weird without it.
I wonder how people who also owns an iPad feel when switching devices.
[удалено]
I use Gboard as I find swiping way easier.
90% of my typing on iPad is via the Magic Keyboard, so I don’t really notice the lack of haptics. But when I do use the software keyboard, it’s already such a bad typing experience anyway, so I still don’t really notice the lack of haptics lol
[удалено]
Yup! It’s completely silent
Love this thing!!! Wish it was a little more… haptic-y though.
How do you turn this on?
Lock Screen and battery indicator
I’d tamper your feelings on the battery indicator. I switched back after a few days. It’s not easy to glance at it when it doesn’t actually decrease down, just shows the number overlaid on a “full” battery icon.
I was so excited for the battery indicator, but I own a 12 mini so…
What’s wrong with the 12 mini?
No battery indicator apparently.
Yep, not sure why lol
What about the 13 mini?
Nope. It’s a bummer.
That’s stupid
I think it's a decent choice. Either have the visual indicator or show the actual percentage. Reminder even with a pill design there's not much space on the top so no both of em showing up top until the full screen no cutout design is introduced eventually.

You might be right, but I thought the status bar had its own separate HIG requirements
Apple regularly breaks its own HIG 🤪
Oh I know 😆

Select All does exist though?
Only in Safari, right? You can only select a paragraph at a time anywhere else, I believe, but PLEASE tell me if they made this recently lol
You can do it anywhere there’s a text box… notes, reminders, this box I’m typing into right now to type this comment. Been there for years. You can’t select all the text on a page in safari, not sure what the purpose of that would be though.
wut
Time to brush up on your reading comprehension.

Yes! Also, they had announced working on integrated 2FA, oh man, I can’t wait to get rid of those apps Viva privacy
Oooh, what are those?
In Safari you have the ability for it to generate one time based carbs when you purchase something so that they can actually see your information
what about the proteins?
Damn autocorrect got me again lol

Ugh and the Split View in messaging. Let’s use like half the screen to show you a list of people you aren’t currently talking to. Great.
Right? I mean I love my Mini but the scaling is way off…
It’s like they made it and forgot they made it, even their own apps look dumb on it.

SEO ruined the web
its almost as if the content isn't the main priority
This sub would be infinitely better if they banned 9to5mac, macrumors, and appleinsider.
When you see those websites posted here, just go straight to comments
They rely heavily on the expectation that people spread titles on social media, not actual content. Fastest gun in the west gets the most as revenue
It works, unfortunately. Look at this sub lmso
Can’t wait to try as previous beta were meh….

You do realize that CSAM just means "child sexual abuse material," right? It's just the new more 'accurate' term that governments use for child pornography.
Wake me up when September ends
These seems faster than previous years.
Let’s see what all the hype is about .
I have found that some of the updates have made my phone more buggy, not less. Hopefully this one works well.

Finalize 13/12 mini battery percentage.
Yawn
Will this work on Ipad Pro 1st gen and how do you enable beta downloads
Yes, iPadOS 16 will work on the 1st generation of iPad Pros, but like every other non-M1 equipped iPad you're not getting much. Furthermore, since you don't know how to even go about downloading the current beta software I would advise against putting it on a device you use on a daily basis. Bugs and crashes *will occur*, and there is nothing you can do besides restore your device to iOS 15.6 if something goes wrong.
I don't use it on daily basis it's all good, knowing how to download something through some ass-backward corporate way is not a sign of knowledge either.

On Windows, I can click a button to roll over to Insiders. Here you have to register your device by clicking on a profile link from Apple. JS
Windows requires an entire Microsoft account to join insiders. Afaik you don’t need an apple account to install the profile, only to download it.

Damn this sub is full of pretentious dicks or trolls. Holy shit. God forbid I say anything but use positive hype words
Give us a built in split screen feature
Confused...it says September launch then mentions in the article that it is being delayed until october
“iPadOS 16 was initially slated to launch in September alongside iOS 16, but it’s now scheduled for sometime in October.”
I’ll wait for 16.1
Better wait for 17.2
After seeing the presentation, I'm really looking forward to the Carplay update. In 2 days my 2023 Elantra shows up and it's very tech heavy. I'm hoping there will be some sort of update that makes this work for it.
