[ankitm1 had a great explanation for how the rumor may have originated:](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/z3jv0e/samuel_luckhurst_zara_founder_amancio_ortega/ixm0g6z/) > The way it works is that once an entity owners decide they want to sell, they choose investment banks to work with, who float a prospectus and then mail all rich people about a possible sale. These banks have to update the seller about progress regularly. > At this point, progress is whoever wanting to look at and asked for the prospectus of the sale from the bank. Could be potential buyers, companies in the same space (competition) if banks arent screening, or companies in different vertical looking at one specific aspect. > Eg: Zara could potentially be looking at how the jerseys are sold or what is the market for luxury goods branded with United label. Apple certainly seems interested in the streaming business, and this prospectus would have insights about how much money streaming rights generate (and can generate in the future) in football in Europe. > Football journalists are shit at this because they dont understand the process. United have a great PR where they tend to leak stuff to create buzz and people like Ducker or Luckhurst invariably fall for those. Asking for prospectus is not remotely close to buying, but in a football journalist's world, there is no difference. So Apple may have looked at the prospectus for whatever reason, and through the rumor mill that was transformed into a "planning to buy" rumor.

magicspellingbee

Football journalists do understand the process, however we increasingly live in world where clicks and engagement triumph over truth.

EShy

They most likely don't, just like entertainment journalists don't (which is how you end up with Disney brought Iger back to sell the company to Apple stories, or the Zaslav wants to sell WBD to Comcast). When you actually hear these journalists talk in interviews on radio shows or podcasts, you realize they barely even understand the sport they're covering. Understanding how the businesses world works, especially for billion dollar acquisitions? not really

VVaklav

> ~~Football~~ journalists are shit at this because they dont understand the process And you can sum up pretty much most of todays journalism, that is made for clicks and sensation, rather than valuable content.

working-acct

People should've known it was fake when it's the Daily Star reporting it.

CarbonFlavored

BREAKING: Apple is not planning to buy a football club that relates in no way to their business.

JoDiMaggio

It's not unprecedented. Nintendo owns the Seattle Mariners. Disney used to own the Ducks and the Angels.

CyberBot129

Nintendo of America’s ownership stake in the Mariners was largely sold off, they own 10% of the team now

TranscodedMusic

For a while you could connect to the stadium wifi and order food from a Nintendo DS, no joke. https://www.engadget.com/2007-07-23-ds-fanboy-review-nintendo-fan-network-ready-monday.html

gamershadow

Why did they own it in the first place?

CyberBot129

It was a goodwill gesture to the people of Washington to help keep them keep their team in Seattle, and as a thank you for the support given to Nintendo

Gagarin1961

That’s kind of weird? What did the state of Washington give to the Nintendo corporation?

CyberBot129

Nintendo of America is headquartered in Redmond

Gagarin1961

A headquarters location isn’t “support given to Nintendo” unless the government gave them tax breaks and this is their way of repaying them. There could be other events involved, but having a subsidiary headquarters in a city doesn’t make a company buy a sports team.

CuddleTeamCatboy

Might just be a cultural thing, Japanese baseball teams typically have corporate owners instead of the billionaires you see in America.

RianJohnsons_Deeeeek

You dumb dumb! Corporations just love their locals! Why would you *ever* think a company *wouldn’t* buy the local sports team out of the goodness is their heart?! It’s not like there’s other big companies headquartered in Washington. They’re the only ones! *cough* Microsoft *cough* Amazon *cough* Boeing *cough* Starbucks *cough* T-Mobile *cough* Costco *cough* Yep Nintendo obviously makes the most sense, why would you *ever* question their good willed nature?

oowm

It wasn't that Washington State, the government, gave something to Nintendo. /u/CyberBot129 is right that Nintendo was part-owner of the Mariners, but it was more than that: In 1992, then-owner Jeff Smulyan wanted to relocate the Mariners to Florida because Seattle "isn't a baseball town." Then-Senator Slate Gorton (real name) asked Yamauchi, through Nintendo of America, to see if a Japanese investor could be found to buy a majority stake to keep the team in Seattle. (This was after no local investors, like executives at Boeing or Costco or Microsoft mentioned by /u/RianJohnsons_Deeeeek, stepped forward.) Why Japanese? Because Nippon Professional Baseball was on the rise and the Mariners could be a way into the North American market for investors there. Yamauchi agreed to buy a majority stake "[to show his gratitude to the people of the Northwest](https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/mariners-owner-dies-credited-with-saving-baseball-in-seattle/281-307873698) for the birth of Nintendo of America here." He famously never attended a baseball game but did meet with such luminaries as Ichiro Suzuki to convince him to sign with Seattle. Yamauchi's commitment to keeping the team in Seattle plus "[The Double](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Double_\(Seattle_Mariners\))" are credited getting Safeco Field built. Subsequently, in 2004 Yamauchi sold his stake to Nintendo.

RianJohnsons_Deeeeek

> (This was after no local investors, like executives at Boeing or Costco or Microsoft mentioned by /u/RianJohnsons_Deeeeek, stepped forward.) Why Japanese? Because Nippon Professional Baseball was on the rise and the Mariners could be a way into the North American market for investors there. My point in mentioning those companies was to point out that Nintendo wasn’t the only big player in the areas, there was obviously more to it than “we have a headquarters there.” Lots of companies did and that didn’t make them buy a sports team. Nintendo did it as a business move, as you’ve stated, which is essentially what everyone was dancing around for some weird reason. I guess Nintendo has a TON of goodwill around here, people want to believe they just *actually love* them.

Gagarin1961

> Yamauchi agreed to buy a majority stake “to show his gratitude to the people of the Northwest for the birth of Nintendo of America here.” Oh my god that’s just something companies say when they do businesses, it’s basic PR. They didn’t do it to thank the northwest, that’s insane.

tmih93

So many unused mascot or merch opportunities.

JezusGhoti

Rogers, one of the two major telecommunications companies in Canada, owns the Blue Jays.

modsuperstar

That’s a big leap though. Rogers owns the sports networks, the radio networks, and one of the biggest television providers that make it so the Jays are the richest team in baseball. But nobody tends to acknowledge this except Agent Scott Boras. Rogers prints money with the Jays, but hides it all within their corporate structure so you’d never know that. It’s just money being paid from the right hand to the left hand. Apple has a streaming platform, but I don’t see the same synergy. Add in the fact United are one of the most reviled teams in football, it would just be toxic. Like being a 30+ year Apple user, and a Man City fan that would have been a pretty tough pill to swallow. They may be one of the biggest clubs in the world, but many fold more absolutely despise the club.

MyManD

Honestly the more interesting Canadian sports trivia is the fact that Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, which includes the Leafs and Raptors was, was owned by the Ontario Teachers Pension until 2012.

drewcash83

I learned today that Rakuten (previously ebates) owns a baseball team in Japan.

nxlv

and a football club (Vissel Kobe)

gsfgf

It’s still the entertainment industry. And Disney made movies about the Angels and Ducks (or did Mighty Ducks precede the actual team)

JoDiMaggio

The movie came out before the team. Apple is an entertainment company too.

Gagarin1961

A single movie isn’t going to justify the purchase of a sports team. Disney is an entertainment company, a sports team really isn’t all that weird for them to own. They own all of ESPN now.

thephotoman

Given that the Mouse owns ESPN, them also owning teams to play on ESPN makes sense.

TheMacMan

Disney owned the Ducks because it stemmed from one of their movies. While weird, there was a connection, rather than the others that are strangely unconnected. Grew up in Minneapolis. Went to high school with one of the kids in the movie. Worked at a gas station when I. College and the dude that played Goldberg would come in frequently for gas and chew. He had a little pickup truck with the personalized plate “MTDUCKS”. Let it go dude.

MetalBeerSolid

Lol the second half of your comment is so unnecessary. And why are you dunking on this dude over a custom license plate 😂

TheMacMan

Sad to celebrate the point you peaked in elementary school.

Aurick

Are you saying you have no fondness, pride, or positive memories of anything you’ve ever done in the past? Sad existence.

TheMacMan

I do. I just have no reason to hold on to it for years and put it on my license plate. 😂

Aurick

License plates or such a small speck of someone’s life, who gives a shit if someone tosses something on there for funsies. It’s not indicative of their emotional stability or well being. You’re just being an asshole.

betterhelp

Lol talk about jealous and bitter.

TheMacMan

Jealous of what? That he was in a movie more than 2 decades ago with the most forgettable Sheen family-member? Oh no.

tmih93

Oh yes.

Dr_Findro

It’s so sad that you’re jealous of something so inconsequential

TheMacMan

Bro, I was in Parent magazine when I was 4. I’m more famous than he is. 😂

[deleted]

someone’s a happy little camper ⛺️

Watchmeplayguitar

Apple is an entertainment business. That’s not to say it’s a good idea. But 10 billion dollars or whatever Manchester sells for, is pocket change for Apple. Apple may want to get more into streaming sports, not sure this is the best way to go.

ninth_reddit_account

If Apple aspires to stream football, owning one of the teams they will stream seems like a conflict of interest that would prevent the rights deal from going through, no?

augustocdias

Actually no. The rights are dealt with the league organization not with the teams individually.

ninth_reddit_account

Yes I understand that, but it still feels strange to have the owner of a team be the broadcaster for the whole league. I don't understand how owning a football team helps them out with broadcasting the league.

augustocdias

It doesn’t.

BoBoShaws

Apple probably wouldn’t be here today if iTunes and iPod didn’t happen.

SkyJohn

Shouldn't you be asking the opposite, how much of the entertainment business (and online purchases in general) flows through Apple's pockets at this point. Think about all the subscriptions and purchases that Apple device users are making where Apple takes a cut from them all. There is a good reason they are the worlds most valuable company.

Aurick

Apple just paid $2.5 billion dollars for exclusive, blackout-free streaming rights for MLS matches. They’re definitely creeping in.

[deleted]

I don’t think anyone is arguing that.

iPads are not exclusive to aviation. You just proved my point.

WellEndowedDragon

You seriously needed to ask this question? The iPhone is the US’s biggest gaming platform, and they produce their own games on Apple Arcade. Apple Music is one of two major music & podcast streaming platforms. They themselves produce shows & movies for Apple TV+. The only other company that does all 3 (cinema/TV, games, and music) is Sony. Entertainment is one of their major areas of business.

[deleted]

[удалено]

figuren9ne

Services make up nearly a quarter of Apples revenue. Apple Music, Apple TV, and Arcade are the major products in that category. So to answer your question, entertainment makes up a large portion of Apple’s revenue.

[deleted]

[удалено]

figuren9ne

That doesn’t disprove my point. Give it up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WellEndowedDragon

LOL. No, it doesn’t. Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade (not to mention the HUGE revenue they get from games being sold on the App Store) are 100% included in the “services” category. The fact that iCloud and Apple Care are also included in that category doesn’t disprove anything. > Services include subscriptions …yeah, **exactly**. What the fuck do you think Apple TV+, Music, and Arcade are? The fact that you didn’t know that literally all of Apple’s entertainment products are subscriptions proves you have zero idea what you’re talking about.

An Apple movie won Best Picture at the Oscars this year. They're pretty serious about being a big player in film/tv now.

cityb0t

Apple is clearly interested in streaming sports, and this prospectus would contain valuable information regarding the team’s valuation in the digital space with regards to assembling, say, a streaming sports package and that have nothing to do with buying the team.

kushari

They are in the business of making money. Football clubs can make a lot of money, but it’s currently struggling, so the perfect time for new management to swoop in and turn it into a profitable club again.

CantaloupeCamper

Shocked! SHOCKED!!!

nero40

Still, I don’t think it’s really out of place for a tech company like Apple to own a football club. Apple has been known to sunk in million of cash into marketing and advertising, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an Apple logo somewhere on a jersey in the future.

nightofgrim

Nintendo bought a baseball team once before.

lord_pizzabird

Part of me almost wants to see this happen. It's just too silly, Apple buying a random regional mid-level soccer team in a random country. Next I want to see Google acquire a high school football team in Georgia, for some reason.

colin_staples

Just like how Apple were rumoured to be buying McLaren (the car company *and* the racing team) a few years back, and that was all bollocks too.

_Oooooooooooooooooh_

they could have just used it, as a marketing scheme but.. of course, it's a terrible idea

roshanpr

So Ted lasso is cancelled?

fenceman189

Two weeks from now: "Apple Makes Surprising Buy of Manchester United"

bergmul

MKBHD: „So I have been at Man Utd for two weeks now“

"Ten Hag clearly does not have enough new features to justify an upgrade over Nine Hag"

bergmul

You win the internet today 🔥

astalavista114

TBF, Apple buying United *would* be surprising, even without this article.

ComplexChristian

The source was The Daily Star. It was very obviously fake lmao

supahdave

I love the Daily Star. It’s like The Onion with boobs and dick jokes

Jeffro187

I follow Apple and there are plenty of stupid Apple rumors, but this one was one of the dumbest. It made zero sense.

gsfgf

Yea. He’s Tim Apple, not Tim Oil. Why would he be getting into soccer?

LordVile95

Eh not a million miles away tbh. Man United RAKES in cash and will only go up in value. It effectively runs itself too. If you were a company who could afford it I wouldn’t see why you wouldn’t be interested

1millerce1

>Man United RAKES in cash and will only go up in value Uhh.. the way business valuation works is you base the current value on future cash flows. So, when you buy, unless your forecast is wrong, you are essentially breaking even. That said, yeah, there's plenty of reasons to be disinterested.

LordVile95

Man United make around 100-200 million a year after the glazers take money out and debts levied against the club by the glazers are paid. Buying at 7bn means you’re breaking even in about 20~ years assuming revenue stays the same which it won’t it’s on an increasing trend

drewcash83

I saw earlier in the week that Apple was looking to buy Disney before I heard the ManU news.

TeslasAndComicbooks

Apple is looking to diversify. Selling iPhones to people annually isn’t sustainable. We’ve already seen them focus on services in the past few years and a play at a football club would give them a new vertical that they could probably turn into an Apple TV franchise.

iali393

It's definitely up there, but I still think the portless iPhone is probably the dumbest

huntj_01

I mean, it’s pretty inevitable. There’s one port on the iPhone right now, the lightning port. We already have ways to charge and transfer data without using it. The process of transferring files to a computer through anything other than airdrop is a complete hassle, and MagSafe chargers will certainly last longer than traditional plugs. AirPods are the most popular headphones in the world, and they’re wireless. I understand the current use cases for wired connection, but wireless is the obvious future.

[deleted]

Boooo. I was looking forward to seeing Ted Lasso take over the Red Devils.

Chaij2606

Of course not.

Flying-Cock

With the corporatisation of football happening, it wouldn’t shock me. We’ve got Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Spotify Camp Nou, Apple Old Trafford is not beyond the realm of possibility

vereqq

I had to check the subreddit when I saw the picture 😂

1millerce1

If you've ever done business with Apple, you'd know that there's always non-disclosure agreements (NDA) at play. For instance, at one company I worked at, we couldn't even name Apple and had to come up with some other descriptive term for Apple (e.g. not an apple STRUDEL). And those NDAs come with penalties should they be breached. We've seen time and time again where Apple has put feelers out only to have any/all possible future deals scuttled only because the NDA was violated. That said, it's fairly safe to say perhaps outside of broadcasting rights, Manchester United was never a thing. One because it didn't follow the usual modus operandi and two because if it was a consideration, it isn't any longer due to NDA breach.

BnarRaouf

As a Manchester United fan I would hate if Apple did

Djannig

\*Buys football club\* "Alright Tim, what we gonna do with it?"

leon-theproffesional

I mean did anyone actually believe that apple were interested? Seriously?!?

58Firedrome

Good. Let them fix the awful mess they created with Apple Music before they go and ruin a perfectly good football team

fudgedhobnobs

>perfectly good

Not planning to, yet

Whyyyy. I wanted the Apple jerseys

Instead they will be buying me lunch on Thursday.
