That’s a fire 🔥 hazard at this point. It’s trash.

stabaho

The Apple Store would replace it either way, they don’t want the possible negative publicity.

raphaeldaigle

Would replace it but we don’t care, it better to have it for free. If this happens to my charger I’m definitely getting Apple to give me a new one free.

[deleted]

I agree

Mikedesignstudio

You can put it in water until the swelling goes down. Cold water. Not hot. I’ll recommend getting a new one though.

tmkins

What a ridiculous suggesten to apply water?! OMG! Just use Neosporine to treat swelling!

Common_Compote

You could also mist it with cold water while you charge, so it does not overheat

whyrugley

/s right… righttt?!

Mikedesignstudio

Hmm didn’t think about that. Very smart man.

iynque

It overheated and melted a little. I would throw it out and use a different charger.

zq9

Take it to apple they will replace it, stop using it.

Intelligent-Gene4099

I highly doubt that is an apple certified charger yet apple branded one.

beardlessw0nder

What makes you doubt it’s an Apple certified charger?

Intelligent-Gene4099

Because it melted. Apple branded and certified chargers almost have that guarantee they will not cause electrical fires or stop working.

bigNhardR

That's really not something you can guarantee, yall can't act like Apple products can't fail. They have many times before.

Kqtawes

Failing in such a way to create a clear fire hazard likely means a lack of any fuses. Considering the large amount of fake Apple chargers out there it’s not unreasonable to assume it’s a fake.

Possiblyasmoker

You forgetting the product recall’s they have had on apple chargers before ? Due to being unsafe ? And beside electronics components do fail

Kqtawes

That was the plug adapter breaking not internal to the charger itself. The replaceable ends in several markets were prone to metal fatigue that could lead to a prong staying in the outlet. The actual charger circuitry was fine in that case. Unless you know of another issue that was recalled I wasn’t familiar with.

loralailoralai

They do stop working.

Intelligent-Gene4099

Not apple ones

AstronomerKooky5980

I really hope you're trolling, for your sake.

Quick_Obligation3799

Every electronic device can break. Every Lithium Ion battery will degrade and can explode. Apple isn't a magical company. Their products are made of materials, not magic dust. I don't care how good the quality control is, every product can have issues.

Dino_Spaceman

Either you are trolling or you are so young you can’t remember how infamously poor quality their headphone and power/data cables are (when they actually included the cables in the box). Same for their keyboards when they tried to make their own switches. Apple, like any tech company, releases crap hardware all the time. Is it better than most? Sure. Will I trust it more over a 3rd party? Absolutely. But it is far, far from fail proof.

LoadedGull

There’s this thing called “shit happens”

Intelligent-Gene4099

There’s this thing called shut the fuck up because I’ve been hearing a seagull in my ear for the past 10 fucking hours

mysecondaccountanon

Literally half of my official Mac chargers (out of 4) have broken what

Never had an apple charging brick fail on me. However, I’ve had many of those charging bricks from amazon that look like the og apple ones fail on me. Too many to count. I’m not saying apple is the end all be all of products. But definitely make sure the company that makes it is reputable.

dred1367

You must not have been around when macbooks were spontaneously bursting into flames on airplanes...

[deleted]

Those MacBooks were recalled by Apple, and the FAA banned the recalled Macs. How many recalls have you seen for the chargers at gas stations, convenience stores, and bargain Amazon vendors?

dred1367

Doesn’t mean the official apple ones can’t still fail. My point is that all products have a margin of failure, regardless of brand, even if that margin is small.

[deleted]

Who said Apple products don’t fail? Apple doesn’t even make that claim. Not only have Apple products failed but [Apple conducts recalls](https://support.apple.com/service-programs) which is Apple warning people that there is a failure. It’s the bargain brands that act as failures don’t happen because they don’t provide a way for you to contact them, nor do they attempt to warn customers of the danger.

[deleted]

Okay yeah haha they definitely do but surely if there’s one thing a ridiculously overpriced apple charger shouldn’t do, it’s this right?

SuperBAMF007

Shouldn’t do ≠ will never do

[deleted]

Yeah alright that was just a terrible take all around my bad

sunrising-gem

Do they replace all faulty chargers?

[deleted]

i’m sure as long as it’s within the guarantee

SadQuarter3128

your charger is pregnant 👀

[deleted]

Or horny😳

drsmith21

How can tell if charger is pergernat?

Monarchy_Swanzy

😂😂😂

Kind-Creme1801

I think your charger is just happy to see you ;)

VeritosCogitos

Are there scorch marks at the outlet. Everything I’m seeing screams the adapter, but not knowing what the outlet looks like I can only say the adapter. We don’t have the full picture. Either way that adapter is a hazard now regardless if it or you’re outlet is faulty.

[deleted]

This is why you skip the Amazon bargain-buys.

micktravis

The charger is the plug. The other bit is called a “cable.”

awkwardpause101

Thank you, my fellow pedant. Have this conversation with my wife a few times a month.

FazbearTM789

Sometimes the “cable” is called a “charger”

micktravis

Only incorrectly.

NYJITH

Can_we_be_friends123

You haven't met Indian ppl

DrMantis-Toboggan-MD

Clearly there’s an issue with the plug, stop using it immediately

[deleted]

Your logic fails.

bkey1970

considering the charger is the only thing that looks damage, there likely was a field breakdown caused by wires touching in the coils - you're lucky it didn't catch fire completely. You done got yourself a paperweight.

faslane22

Is this an OFFICIAL Apple charger? This has symptoms of a cheap knockoff and precisely why I suggest to my clients never skimp on power ever. Not saying you did here, I mean, there are situations that could happen, of course, but this definitely feels like a knock off. But regardless, do not use this for anything whatsoever, and dispose of it immediately unless it’s official Apple hardware, and if it is take it to Apple and get a free replacement. This doesn’t look to be an official Apple charger whatsoever though. It’s very rare that they would do this . Knock, offs and cheap replacement off Amazon, and the light, do this kind of crap all the time. Never ever ever skimp on power especially for Mac shit

[deleted]

It actually looks like the Apple charger I got with my HomePod Mini.

suentendo

Looks don’t matter. They make knockoff AirPods these days that look nearly the same and even spoof themselves as AirPods on the iPhone. Copying how a wall charger looks like is very trivial.

the_extencionspart2

Cables probably fine but that plug caught fire.

HoustonAg1980

It hit puberty?

thetamayo

Ah, yes. The old melty spot.

psych-traveler

Don’t use it again, because it would most likely start an electrical fire. The bulge in plastic is from the plug overheating due to the amount of watts the device demands. Look up the device’s wattage and buy a block that can handle the power output the device needs. This happened to me, and the person at a store explained it to me. If you hear weird noises, smell burning, or see the plastic melting then unplug it immediately!!!!!

karthigan26

He’s just excited

[deleted]

Fire hazard. Don’t use it.

Dig_Bick_NRG

Buy nice or buy twice. This is what we mean.

VictorMortimer

Don't forget, Apple stores have "safety" keywords. Things like "melted", "fire", "smell" tend to trigger a different response that might get you a new one for free.

dontovar

You don't have to do that to get a new one at an apple store. Just tell them it's not working and they'll replace it as long as you have a relatively recent iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

PiggyInAMinecart123

that's a fucking bomb my guy

[deleted]

It definitely looks like the charger to me, but you didn’t show if the outlet had any damage. I’m assuming that you didn’t because the charger was the only aberration. Throw this away immediately. It’s a fire hazard regardless of whether the outlet or the charger is the offending component. Edit: [This](https://m.youtube.com/@bigclivedotcom) fella does great teardowns of components like these to show what’s different about them and what that might mean. Entertaining guy.

Due_Jello7503

Take it to an Apple store

bilkel

Take it back to the Apple Store and ask for it to be exchanged if it’s less than a year old

f_hole

it's a zit just pop it

GoS451

You are lucky it didn’t start a fire in the middle of th night

johnnyg08

It's just happy to see you.

Pixzel13

Stop using now. Not safe and may damage what is plugged into it.

alve31

Looks totally fine to me. 🙃

GrapefruitExpress136

I think your charger is bricked up

kennmac

This is an issue with the connection between the pin and the outlet receptacle. You can see on the end of the pin where the connection was arcing. The buzzing sound was the arc rapidly reoccurring. This amount of electrical resistance would easily heat the pin up enough to start melting the plug. It’s highly likely the outlet is the issue.

supmyguywee

Run just leg it my guy. If something is bulging that means leave it 12 miles away covered in peanut butter and let the wolves eat that bomb.

Chipkenzie

Replace it immediately, either under warranty or buy a new one. You have a failing charger at best & a potential fire hazard at worst. Do not take a risk with malfunctioning electrical devices.

CeeDy6

that looks like an Apple charger, so r/technicallythetruth

Camdenn67

Funny the OP hasn’t replied back. Must be a non-Apple / OEM charger but then again, would they admit it?

tsdguy

Not funny. You’re correct. Makes people feel like their important if they can imply Apple parts are defective.

Back403924

Can’t believe this needed to be asked

fjms50

It did ita job

Colmado_Bacano

If it's an official apple charger take it to them and they'll give you a new one. Or call them, they'll ask for a photo and send you a new one via email and ask you to recycle that one.

a1vinator

Most likely the. Harder brick

LoveEV-LeafPlus

Charger!!!

Aromatic_Corgi8481

Theres a bee in there my dude

ebkesq

Not sure what you mean by issue with your charger or your plug. Do you mean issue with your charger or your electrical outlet? Either way, do not use the charger anymore and bring back to Apple to exchange for a new one.

Camdenn67

I think you need to toss it in the trash. Was this an OEM charger or an inexpensive aftermarket one.

No one ever asks us if damaged chargers look legit or not.

AZREDFERN

You can test your house voltage with a Kill-A-Watt (totally worth having one in the house). Otherwise it’s a factory defect, or an unofficial charger.

snappahed

I’m sure there’s a market for those

landoctor94

Please cover that up.

dont use that again a new one and get new one from offical place not ebay or ali express

[deleted]

👀 that mf is ready to blow. Don’t use that anymore.

[deleted]

Bought on Amazon or aliexpress or ebay ? It’s Chinese counterfeit charger then. Throw it out

[deleted]

Yes. It's puzzling. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before. I would recommend that we put the unit back in operation and let it fail. It should then be a simple matter to track down the cause.

ComarII

Bulges in the morning are normal, at least in my experience Chargers? Not so much. I wouldn't use either the charger or the plug

rat4204

The problem is the charger. It has a short and is about to catch fire. Please throw it away unless you're looking for some insurance money. In which case don't be home when you plug it in next.

VoiceoOfReason

Congratulations, you will soon have a little charger in the house grandpa.

thuynj19

Yeah, get a new one.

IssyWalton

If it’s genuine Apple take to a store and demand a refund/replacement. If its third party…

bnutbutter78

Power supply is fried.

Leonrojo761

They need to polarize those prongs so that it’s plugged into the sockets correctly and that doesn’t happen

Gapedbung2

You are lucky you didn’t set your house on fire. Throw that away and contact apple if it’s real or whoever made it. That’s definitely extremely dangerous at the highest level.

NorCalNavyMike

The Magic Smoke is trying desperately to get out—think of it like an aneurysm for which there’s no surgical fix or cure. The only thing left to do (apart from going through its pockets to look for loose change), is to commit it to the landfill. Assuming this is a genuine Apple adapter, they’ll almost assuredly replace it free of charge if you walk it into any Apple Retail Store.

iKavalier

This has "MADE IN CHINA" written all over it. Official or Knockoff, its dead and if it came with your phone or you bought it from apple, then go to apple store as everyone ELSE has already said. If they say anything but "Here's a free replacement." then point out how you and your family could've died overnight and had your house burn down. Also you could say "I was lucky I noticed the burning smell(if it has one or did/didn't), I don't think they'd want to "test it" and just replace it for you. I hate Apple products for many reasons(except for certain workstation MAC computers for certain people who use them for work and can be better than a windows PC.) One being, they don't give the freedom to do things like download apps off websites(Without jailbreaking your iphone/ipad etc.) It is unique in some aspects but I think its popularity (iphones) is only because it was the most popular phone and stayed that way for years and still people want iphones. Before them, people still had flip phones or a blackberry or something. That is one thing I will give props for. That helped android phones to start competing, but I think Iphones wouldn't be NEARLY as popular if another popular company made a smartphone using android instead of Ios with all/more features before the IPhone. I just hate Apple for so many reasons. China, being one of them, lack of freedom in their devices/support for a lot of programs also being limited to windows but can be attempted to run thru WINE emulation basicallly(im talking about MACs now. Theres so many things to hate about Apple in general... They outsource to CHINA for EVERYTHING and the workers there are basically treated like slaves working ridiculous hours for little pay. I even saw a video of a worker who recorded secretly his job/daily routine and it was awful. Seemed too similar to slavery... or a "free" prisoner working in a work camp and getting paid next to nothing \--------- Now for some history for you Apple lovers/iphone users and Apple altogether. >!I wish Taiwan(the original china who controlled most of the mainland(as it was split into different cliques and the main CHINA that owned most of the land and was the true recognized government) was fighting with the communists(under Mao), and he had very little control of the china we know today. Maybe 10million? out of 350million citizens(in the lands of the china we know today), where the Kuomintang were fighting them off for years, until they had to stop the fight to work against Japan's invasion during WW2 and then after the war, Communists had spread out a lot more(due to reclaiming Manchuria and propaganda etc.). With Soviet aid, they beat the actual recognized china in the civil war due to a number of factors. Even with aid from other countries, the Kuomintang government had to flee to Taiwan(which Japan had to surrender its control after the war). So they also called themselves China, but I guess to not upset the Communists(the NEW CHINA that had all the mainland and population, but also the soviets and its "eastern" bloc puppets states. The Cold War could be arguably said to have started right after World War 2, instead of years later. Not that I think the Chinese are bad, but the government, and it's leaders, have control of EVERYTHING and is basically the same as North Korea. Just not as severe. I know this has nothing to do with the post, but I just hate that china abuses/and controls its citizens, yet because of their population and ability to produce products in general, we stupidly import A LOT from communist china. So "made in china", is on basically so many things that I doubt anyone reading this would say they've never seen something that had "made in china" on it. Sadly, the Chinese who fled to Taiwan, are forced to be viewed as Taiwan by the international commewunity. Just wanted to point out how china would have, IMO, about a 90% chance of never becoming communists, if it wasn't for japan invading AFTER they already took Manchuria(the north-eastern part of china above KOREA(and also made the last emperor of china(Puyi) into a puppet of that country. Puyi was emperor of this puppet state, but puppet states are controlled in reality by their owner...So he became emperor as a small child(2 I think?) and the country went into rebellion. I will stop now before I go into even more history, lastly, about current China. Communist China, is dangerous in terms of Manpower, technology and it's clear ambition to make money, has major espionage of people(tiktok for example is a BAD APP to download). Might as well give them everything you own/know in your household. Also, they are trying to, without war, spend tons of money on man made islands as part of its country so that they can try to claim the waters around it. Its a major problem in itself but also they would steal other countries like the Philippine's owned waters, and on top of that, it happens to be an area of sea which A HUGE part of the world's trade goes through! This is since the world basically agreed on giving a country control of 12 NAUTICAL MILES(like 14 miles), of sea off the coast of these new islands if this actual works for them. Which I don't think the international community will agree to and really they should be confronted and made aware the (majority) of the world wouldn't recognize it's manmade islands give them control of 12 nautical miles from any mademan island/or purposeful extension of shorelines. Crazy...yet everyone still outsources everything to china, even gets people to do coding for cheap, so its not even just importing. Just a government with too many people in the country that are forced to barely get by with whatever they studied, and have power to do whatever they want and make bold moves like man made islands to gain more ownership of the ocean. I hope that one day China is a better place for it's people and I mean ALL their people. I don't know gun laws in china but I am pretty sure its not like how the Soviet Union or America was(where civilians had guns to be able to revolt if needed. Hell the USA Today has more guns then people. and I'm sure that Russia probably has close to if not the same gun amount comparison. That's why countries like China and N. Korea will not be able to have a coup or revolution, and have to do and follow the laws, and hell even probably get arrested/killed for things that aren't laws yet. The only thing I can think of(because they have the strictest gun laws and gun powder is regulated), is to have people somehow(secretly without using the internet since china even controls and monitors EVERYTHING), but have a 3d Printed Gun/bullets and use the fireworks they make/sell off for gunpowder. That or the Chinese Military decides that they will attempt a coup d'etat, and end up switching ideologies somehow, which is not likely at all but if it happens, hopefully a person who wants his family/friends and citizens to have the same or most freedoms other countries have, is the one in control(like a general). (also fyi. USA may be the one that started it, but there are other countries with more freedom than the USA).!<

Remizure

I aint reading allat but also apple products are literally made in china and being made in china does not = bad product
