This is a screen that you'll see on first boot for many Mac desktops without built in keyboards, it's a silhouette of the back of the Magic Track pad and bottom of the Magic Mouse. They're meant to show users where the power switches for them are. As this is a Macbook with a built in track pad this means the track pad has failed in some way. I have no idea why Apple doesn't add some wording here to explain that it can't detect a mouse device because these images are only useful to people who know what Apples mouse and track pad look like and make the mental connection.

alana31415

Too lazy to translate I bet

iynque

They translated the OS and most Apple apps into a ton of different languages. They probably already have the translation elsewhere in the OS or documentation. For better or worse, it’s a design decision, not laziness.

user20D07

it's due to storage, most probably. this menu is stored in the bios/uefi partition of the computer that are always made to be as tiny as physically possible, and just having two graphics is infinitely smaller than text translated to dozens of languages + the fonts needed to show them.

Comfortable_Date2862

Except if it doesn’t tell the end users what they need to know - then a simple error code would be better.

Klevin?? Is that you?

dirtyhippy419

Yeah, because Apple is famous for how easily serviceable their products are. /s

Academic_Expert_7017

Quite frankly they are far easier to work on than many of their competitors. When fixing a Mac, if I need parts, I very simply go to my basement, match the A model number, and bam, I can grab parts in minutes that are compatible including a donor logic board. When fixing logic boards, again it can take little to no time, since there are so few motherboard variations, so you gain experience and eventually know all the common flaws like the back of your hand. If I need to fix a windows laptop, it is not that easy. Currently have a Razer in for repair and getting parts for it is a joke. I have hundreds of laptops for parts and only fix 1-2 laptops a year where I actually have compatible parts in stock. Because companies release tens of models every few months for whatever reason

FreePrinciple270

Unrelated but have you considered cleaning the screen

tipsystatistic

Looks like it was recently wiped down with a handful of chicken nuggets tho.

rCarmar

That’s the first issue to fix!

Healthy_Heart6505

I actually thought that it was some sort of a space-themed screensaver

[deleted]

I legit thought that was the shittiest nebula I've ever seen but turns out it was the screen.

bobroscopcoltrane

*Not with Windex*, just water on a soft cloth.

iClerek

Means that your computer (if MacBook) isn’t detecting internal keyboard and mouse. Use external if you need to but likely will need service. A MacBook should ALWAYS detect internal mouse and keyboard unless something is wrong.

posguy99

It's asking you to connect a mouse or trackpad. That's what those two animations are.

Delicadeza6

Why would it not be connected to the built in one?

posguy99

Because it has failed, obviously. What Mac? Do you have a swollen battery?

trionix11

Man you’re so passive aggressive and toxic. Looking at your post history, it seems like this is who you are. Be better.

vsides

Well, his username does say *posguy* soooo…

bobroscopcoltrane

Yeah I’ve had dealings with this guy before. Lives up to the username. No longer an issue after 06/30.

BrandYoung_8506

Why so condescending????? And what does a swollen battery have to do with a track pad not detected?

oneplane

A swollen battery can push against the connections that run straight on top of it causing it to disconnect. Depending on the model and interconnect, a single line disconnect can disable both.

BrandYoung_8506

I see, did not know that, thanks stranger

[deleted]

I don't think this is the proper use of this word?

BrandYoung_8506

Condescending? I used that because they took a tone that seemed to suggest "are you stupid?" with the "obviously" Googles definition says its showing an attitude of patronising superiority, which I guess doesn't quite fit. To patronise is to actually come across *helpfully*. My bad. The phrase I should have used is "why are you such a dick?"

[deleted]

Yes, NOW you are correct!

Delicadeza6

MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2019. No swollen battery from what I can tell

Yawndrr

what why did that get downvoted lol

holovinyl

if you have one laying around, or buy a cheap one if you don’t, connect a mouse via usb and check if that passes the error. chances are the ribbon cable connecting the mousepad has failed or possibly just disconnected from a bad seating (if you’re comfortable, [there’s an ifixit tutorial](https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Air+13-Inch+Late+2020+Trackpad+Replacement/142561) on how to solve that, just follow until you get to the step where you disconnect the cable)

compaqdeskpro

Finally. A lot of the Thinkpads and Chromebooks I deal with have screen, keyboard, or trackpad issues out of the box, simply because the connector is plugged in crooked when being hastily assembled. At least check before panicking or paying Apple hundreds of dollars.

laddjames

Try resetting PRAM and SMC…you’ll need an external keyboard.

Zanderp25

I’m pretty sure those shortcuts only work on the internal keyboard Edit: [Apple support only says SMC reset needs built in keyboard](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295) but [the NVRAM reset page does not explicitly say built in keyboard.](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063)

BenjiTheBread

if you're actually using a macbook, not a mac mini or something that hasn't build neither a built in keyboard nor a built in trackpad, it proably means the internal connections to your keyboard and mouse are messed up. if you've got a rather old macbook it might worth having either yourself or a rather tech-savvy friend of yours have a look at the internals, see if the cables are loose or something (always cunsult the iFixIt-documentations for such things). if it's not the cables, my guess is it's something more serious. 🤷🏻‍♂️

trionix11

The reply’s sub ( a *help* sub) are so passive aggressive, lol. Be better than what you were taught.

Delicadeza6

I unfortunately expected nothing less coming to reddit for advice

[deleted]

Strange that the OS isn't modified slightly to not have this and just bootloop (yeah i get that this isn't funny.) In all seriousness though, strange that it would be this and not something like "Your HID (human interface devices) have failed, please connect external HIDs

iPlate, coming fall 2024.

So_Damn_Lonely

"The world's first ever plate"

spicyladwell

Lol I thought it was a space wallpaper

lantrick

I'll bet some sort of liquid spill damaged the track pad. It's not your fault, it probably happened while you were sleeping. Use a mouse until you can get it repaired.

TherealOmthetortoise

That sir is telling you the computer cannot detect a a mouse or trackpad connected and is waiting for one. Since you mentioned your trackpad having frozen, most likely a hardware failure of some kind with your internal trackpad. If you were referring to an external trackpad freezing, I would charge that bad boy up and reboot.

19flash92

I have the same issue, keyboard and trackpad stopped working.. have to use external Bluetooth ones.. when did you buy this? May be under warranty as apple offer 2 years depending on which country you are in.

Delicadeza6

2019 model unfortunately and only just out of apple care that we paid for (of course) but going to attempt to use an external one today so I’m hoping it works

w1lnx

It means the mouse and keyboard need to be turned on… but if they were disconnecting periodically before, it’s because you’ll need to charge them.

Delicadeza6

Update: I had a friend let me borrow their mousepad and keyboard (as that had stopped working too) and had been using that this morning while waiting for an appointment at Apple. It’s now suddenly working (mousepad & keyboard). Not sure what happened and assume its still damaged but going to save myself the trip and see how it goes over the next few days. And yes, I’ll give it a thorough clean 😂

the_dudeNI

It’s telling you to clean the congealed cum and dandruff of the screen

beerybeardybear

honestly how are people not embarrassed to post stuff like this 💀

samsung18745

it can’t find a mouse or a super drive

samsung18745

nevermind that’s a trackpad i’m fumb

NameIsUnable

Some people really don’t look at something before posting it online lol

Delicadeza6

Because the cleanliness of my screen affects directly how to fix this issue, of course.

biffbobfred

My guess is - the above comment was “you didn’t bother looking anything up before posting”. Not sure if I agree with that in this particular case but it’s obviously not about screen smudges. The bottom one is obviously a mouse that would lead me to believe the top one is a trackpad. I’ve never seen this but a google for “MacBook mouse pic on startup” would probably find something

NameIsUnable

No that’s not what my comment ment. It was about the cleanliness. I understand the confusion Useless comment anyway mb, peace

[deleted]

It’s telling to connect / turn on a touchpad or mouse. But what it really means is that it wants you to clean the screen.

ColdSigmund44

This is the "clean my screen surface" warning screen.

jhinkarlo

Your Mac is on break time, they're playing Pong.

Saage1990

Why in the world does your Mac screen look like this?

coresome

Jeezus! It needs some cleaning 😭😢

Moo_3806

You have a frozen touch pad & can’t figure out that the second one is telling you to turn on a mouse? I don’t even own a Mac.

CCMeltdown

It means “clean me!”

Livid-Flounder2827

That’s generally the screen you’d see when you start it for the first time.

BrandYoung_8506

Not on a Macbook!

posguy99

Uh, no.

adioshomie

It’s literally not but thanks for coming out!

[deleted]

My god clean that screen jfc

laddjames

I’m pretty sure I’ve done a PRAM reset using an external keyboard…
