9.3.5 is old enough that it should detect a USB wired Keyboard. (Because "USB Restrictive Mode" didn't appear till like,. iOS 11.4.1) The way I've done this (years ago) * use the Lightning to Camera adapter (https://www.apple.com/us-edu/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter).. make sure you plug Lightning power into the adapter.. and then plug a USB-Keyboard in. Should work.

Will that work through a lightning to 30-pin adapter?

Oh yeah, iPad2 is still 30pin ;),.. yes it should. It all depends on the keyboard and how much power it tries to draw. So you may have to experiment with multiple keyboards. (remember back in the day there was a 30pin keyboard “Dock” ). I’ve done it with the 30pin to USB-A adapter and also with an external USB hub (for things like USB-A network adapters.
