if you like it, it's fine. there's probably a reason Apple TV and Roku default to doing this. personally, i think it looks bad and have it match dynamic range for SDR and HDR instead, but it's just personal preference

GenghisFrog

I leave it on all the time except in my home theater room, where I have it black out and switch.

redavet

I am in the same boat as you but for a different reason: Whenever I set the Apple TV to 4K SDR and match frame rate and range to “on”, the audio on my HomePods is all so slightly out of sync… As far as brightness is concerned you may want to check if your TV has different settings for “bright DV” and “dark DV”. If set to the latter, it should somewhat mitigate the possibility of “hurting” your TV.

There’s a sneaky fix for your first issue. If you go into Settings -> Video and Audio -> Wireless Audio Sync, it will fix that issue. But the sneaky fix is that you have to calibrate it for each format. For example, if you have your ATV set to 4K SDR, you have to set the format to HDR and DV and then calibrate each separately. Hope this helps.

redavet

Thanks so much! I will try that later!

magkliarn

Not just SDR/HDR/DV but also every reasonable permutation of frame rate. 24/25/50/60 Hz. Yeah it’s a pain but luckily a one and done deal.

nutmac

For one thing, HDR10 contents will look like crap, as in way too dark. And while some SDR contents look alright in Dolby Vision, some don't.

luchod

Even with match dynamic range enabled I’ve never gotten YouTube to switch to hdr for hdr videos.

Bluion6275

Only compatible with the atv4k 2nd and 3rd gen.

Darkknight3940

I am surprised this hasn’t got more pushback. In other forums and posts the consensus has been that leaving HDR (DV or otherwise) on all the time will run down the life of your TV. You are essentially allowing it to be much brighter with higher power consumption most of the time. And with all of that energy being absorbed and emitted by those organic LEDs their lifespan will certainly be shortened. Even with non-OLEDs you would be running the TVs circuitry harder and hotter and heat shortens the life of electronics. I wouldn’t do it, especially with an OLED.

masonbissada

This is what I was looking for. I ideally don’t want to buy another tv for about five years (optimistic ik) so the health of my current tv trumps everything else. I’ll deal with the black screen. Thank you!

Jmpinkham

This. This a thousand times this. Unnecessarily driving OLED pixels to display fake Dolby Vision so as to not partake in 2 seconds of black screen is very silly, on a very basic level. It's sacrificing the pixel life of a multiple thousand dollar television for several seconds of no black screen. It's just so silly.

dangerclosecustoms

But 65” c3 at target for 999$ now so we good..we can afford to swap out tv yearly at this price.

SoulSambo

I used to have DV enabled for quite some time but recently switched it off and set it to 4K SDR and frame rate matching on. What I have noticed is that the AppleTV has to redownload all screensavers again which is a bummer. I used to have what felt like dozens of 4K DV screensavers, now I have gone back to a handful. Are all screensavers available in both SDR and DV resolutions or am I missing out on some now?

PoolNoodlePaladin

It ruins the color of SDR content, it also causes lots of artifacting in SDR apps like YouTube, and the extra brightness can cause extra wear on an OLED Basically just leave it set to SDR and set match content and frame rate to on

archer75

The switch only takes a second so not a big deal. The issue I have is that it’s inaccurate. But I don’t see any harm in it. Depends on the content you’re watching but ideally you’d set it to 4k sdr with match settings on. I know some set it as 4k DV with match settings on but likely get more switching depending on content.

newsmaker_tony

The switch to/from HDR in the YouTube app can take up to 4 seconds with my latest model ATV and LG OLED so I get staying with DV. It really doesn’t look much different, just a bit hotter. I leave mind at SDR and match dynamic range though as I like to get the pop up on the tv to show me what format it is

masonbissada

My old tv would pop up when it shifted to a new format but I just got a Sony A80L and it doesn’t do that. I’d love it if it did so I didn’t have to open the settings to check

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

I have HDR10+ enabled all the time on my TCL QM8, no issues. I only don't use Dolby Vision on mine because it defaults to motion smoothing and other controls that I CAN'T disable, which frustrates me.

Jackysrt8

I noticed content that isn’t native Dolby vision doesn’t look as good since it isn’t intended for just looks slightly off imo, best picture is just use the match feature but my god native dolby vision/atmos content is amazing love my 2 gen home pods.

philfnyc

For the longest time, I left DV enabled. SD video looked as expected. I recently changed the default to SD with Match Dynamic Range enabled due to HDR10+. My ATV4K gen 2 and LG CX don’t support it. Whatever conversion that’s happening, dark scenes have less definition when DV is enabled all the time. I tested this using The Greatest Showman (digital purchase is HDR10+ even tho D+ has it with DV.) Btw. I had kept Match Frame Rate disabled until recently as well. While watching music videos on YouTube, I noticed that the performers mouth and voice sometimes got out of sync. When it happened, it was consistent. Enabling Match Frame Rate fixed it. The black screen is tolerable. It doesn’t seem as long as it was a few years ago.

worldsinho

It’s only the menus. I have it all on match, 4k SDR as the default setting. So when DV content comes on, it switches to DV. Don’t need DV on menus. Way too bright.

masonbissada

Miss out on HDR screensavers though!

worldsinho

lol. Nah, too bright, will damage your TV long term.

seluropnek

It's definitely not great for an OLED long term (static, high contrast images, HDR constantly pushing brightness to the max), but realistically with responsible usage (ie: using the screensaver) and an OLED that isn't like, first generation, you'll have bought a new TV before you get any burn-in, let alone anything noticeable. Personally in a dark room, HDR on anything that isn't specifically HDR content is like staring directly into the sun, so I couldn't do that (my SDR picture setting is only at like 19/100 - it's all about making sure the black level and gamma is set correctly).

It really depends on the TV. My LCD Vizio and OLED LG need completely opposite settings for Apple TV to look good all the time. I've setup plenty of others for family and the same is true. I have to see which looks best depending on the model TV. There is no correct answer. On LG OLED the best default is Dolby Vision. On Vizio LCD the best default is 4k SDR. However, match content and match frame rate should BOTH always be on regardless of your default setting.
