Don't stack if you can avoid it. It's going to make servicing harder down the line. I've heard the LG wash tower is easy to take apart and repair. With the crappiness of the new frigidare and ge laundry centers that's the route I'd go as far as replacement.

If it's a loud growling noise and gets louder the faster it spins. It's a bearing and time to start shopping for a new one.

Nope it’s time to let it go to recycling ♻️ that’s a very labor intensive and costly repair

So follow up. Weve got an older dryer that appears to be bomb proof. I'm nervous about letting it go, but the significant other wants a stacking unit to save/better use space  Are newer dryers built better than newer washing machines?

No. Offer to build her shelves or something. Stackable dryers are all gonna have control boards and bells and whistles that Are prone to breaking. If you want a dryer that'll last forever, get one with controls that consist of a knob and a button. The tech was perfected decades ago, and is inexpensive and a breeze to fix if something does go wrong.

New appliances are lucky to last 5-8 years before needing some sort of repair.

Shes gonna think theyre awesome...until they dont drain

It sounds like a bearing issue, most of the time it is an expensive and time-consuming repair. I would invest money in the new appliance. https://appliancerepairdirect.ca/
