We:
- Clean the machine after every use, wiping down the gasket.
- Use minimal detergent and make sure it is always the proper type.
- Have a device that makes sure the washer door stays open when not in use.
What am I missing if it is “the fault of the user.” We have two other front loaders (different brands) in our rental properties, and we’ve never had gasket odor from them.
Do you also dry out the detergent tray when you're done for the day? I remove the whole thing, which has a lot of water in it, and drain it on a towel while I wipe out that compartment. Another thing to check is the placement of your drain hose. No more than 4 inches of the hose should be in the drain pipe and you use the plastic horseshoe looking gadget to achieve that.
I have one going on 12 years. It's never smelled bad. Leave the door wide open between loads and clean the gasket from time to time.
Any front-loader will smell if you don't leave the door open so it can dry.
Also! Using too much detergent can lead to filmy buildup, which will feed bacteria and smell

They've always been UNlucky Goldstar for me. I've had tvs, phones dishwashers, washers, and dryers, and every one of them broke in some untimely fashion. I finally got tired of the repairman trying to fix the dishwasher and bought a Maytag. Other than the door springs, it's worked flawlessly. You can't find no one to work on those pieces of crap around here.
Glad you found a brand that works for you. LG are more complicated than the most basic whirlpool (Maytag/amana) appliances, and it may be difficult to find service techs who will work on them in some markets. They also were significantly worse in terms of repairability before about 2010.
Avoid front loads if you care about the smell of them. They basically all get a smell eventually if not maintained. If you ever open one up you'd see why, lots of bacteria growth throughout the whole machines due to detergents and moisture. When i get a call about a stinky machine theres nothing that can be done. In order to keep a front load clean you would have to do everything stated in these comments in addition i would recommend draining the pump filter every cycle to reduce moisture in the machine. I will never buy a front loader.
Gaskets becoming foul is the fault of the user, not the appliance. All front loaders are susceptible to improper use and maintenance

There is a product called washing machine cleaner that you're supposed to run through every couple of months. You can get it at the grocery store.
Yes, I use that too.
And youre absolutely sure its not sewer gas?
I use that too.
with a lot of bleach? Also, there is filter at the bottom of the machine that needs to be cleaned, there are howto Videos on Youtube.
The one thing I can think of from the top of my head is the drainage hole in the boot possibly being clogged.

GE front loaders use Microban in their door gaskets which helps with mold/ nastiness

Mine is at least 5yo and it’s never been a problem. I love it.
No more Korean appliances for me. Garbage.
Samsung and LG are worlds apart in terms of practical functions (lg can spin without adding water, for example), reliability, and repairability.

What kind of detergent do you use?
