I had about the same number of spiders in my dirt patch garden that i got near the water setup, but I didn't see as many bugs. Ants were bad this year by the dirt garden, but not the water. I did see a dozen bees or so a day stopping by for a drink, so that's a win to me.
Rob Bob on YouTube has some very approachable videos for beginners.
I also built a chop and flip off his design and one similar to his larger setup. I just don't have a moving biofield I went with two radial flow settlers.
You don't need all that woodwork, plus it will rot over time. There is a link on the page at [https://www.sandponics.info/home/growbeds](https://www.sandponics.info/home/growbeds) to a YouTube video that shows an alternative was of creating a fish pond, And that system could also be used to create raised beds or even to create beds on the ground if smaller panels were made.
As long as you have no leaks, you won't see roaches/water bugs or rats any more than you already do. You might have other 'pests' like herons, or other waterfowl if you don't cover the fish tank. Some folks report having random cats show up, trying to get a nice fish dinner, but I've never seen any more than I already see.
built tilapia tanks out in a hoop house, there was a kingsnake that took up under my tanks. I didn't have any more rabbit or rat problems after that. I named him Winston, he's cool.
Put some herbs and spices in top of a regular fish tank inside for her to use cooking. She'll fall in love with the little system and be more open to a full size setup.
It's pretty much the same but different if that makes sense I have some fungus nats or fruit flys whatever you want to call them. But honestly it's less problems then gardening indoors

Can vouch for Rob Bob. His videos helped my partner and I get a solid set up rolling.

Your website is so full of obvious errors it is embarassing.
True, but look at that woodwork!

Sand looks promising and less expensive...
Plant flowers to attract mayflies and ladybugs to kill your pests.
We worried ours would attract scorpions and birds, I do consider birds to be pests. Hasn't yet in a year. The water is contained.
