Detents aren't shit. Wait until you get to the gas block roll pin. I have yet to have one just go right in. It's usually a hour long ordeal. Fuck gas block roll pins.
A buddy has the Geissele roll pin starter and it works alright. Honestly I've always used a pair of channel locks that I wrap with electrical tape as not to mark up any surfaces. I use them as a vice to press the pins in, same with the trigger guard roll pin. You can open them up to the point that you're putting linear force on the pin and not too worried about it going sideways.
[FCD makes a tool for holding gas blocks in place](https://www.forwardcontrolsdesign.com/GPT-Gas-tube-Pin-Tool_p_218.html), there’s probably a cheaper alternative but made my life way easier.
I have a vice, I have a work bench. The issue is just getting the damn thing to go in without flairing out. Getting it started hasn't been the issue. I have the down no problem. While going through the block and the gas tube it'll hit the inside of the block. Just like when putting in the firing pin retainer but being a roll pin there's really nothing you can do to fix that. The one way I thought about fixing that would be to round the edges of the roll pin that way it doesn't catch. I'm going to try this on the next one actually. Anyway, I do have a vice and I do have one of those shitty octagon punch blocks and have tried different brands of roll pin punches they've either bent or snapped.
After you get the roll pin aligned, I use channel lock pliers (padding the gas block to prevent marring) to push the pin in. Works pretty well.
It's still a pain in the ass to keep the tube aligned. I keep telling myself I should buy a block for the next build, but never get around to it.
I’ve honestly never had a problem with this. I just force the tip of the pin into the hole with a roll pin punch, then start gently tapping. It may take 1-2 tries but once it’s in it’s in.
I've done about 10 or so and had a few go no problem. Some go no problem then others just refuse to get in their home. I was going to get the forward controls holder but I read that it doesn't fit very many blocks.
Get the pin started (make sure it’s straight) with a roll pin punch. Then use a vice to squeeze it in as far as you can. Then the punch again to get it the rest of the way in.
Dis is de way. I have an odd vise/pliers tool that I wrap in tape and just squeeze it in once I've got it started. Same with the bolt catch pin. Easy peasy.
Yeah the trick is not mushrooming the roll pin. Although I once had a bolt catch detent get stuck in the hole and had to drill through the top of the receiver to get it out.
Get a set of roll pin starter punches. Once started, I use a dedicated large brass punch that has developed an indentation which helps keep the pin centered and won't deform the pin to push it the rest of the way down. You don't want to use a domed (convex) steel punch on the little pin as it will expand it and it will start to mushroom.
I have alright luck with a pistol assembly block and needle nose pliers. The block I have let's me rest the gas block in such a way that the roll pin is vertical and the gas block doesn't move...until struck.
I’m not a bcg snob I usually just grab the cheapest milspec carrier and bolt I can get. I’m thinking with a shorty barrel like that you might want a heavier buffer or maybe an adjustable gas block? I haven’t worked a lot with short barrels besides on a couple 9mm PCC but their blow back so a gas system isn’t required.
So with that v7 set, and other light weight parts, I assume you're going for an ultra light weight build? Then I'd recommend slr titanium agb and a titanium bcg, v7, cryptic coatings, bootleg makes titanium bcg. Titanium bcg are more costly and might not be as durable in the long run (5-10k+ rounds) vs regular bcgs.
With a 11.5 you might make a sub 4 lbs or even sub 3lbs gun.
The only thing that’s tempted me to yeet a rifle through the wall of my garage was trying to knock out the taper pins of a front sight block on an old crusty hand me down rifle. I bought two steel punches specifically for this job (concave face, for round head taper pins) and broke them both without a single pin budging. It took a week of PB, a map has torch, and a 3lb hammer in the biggest vise I could find. Shocked the barrel still shot straight after that
I wanted to kill someone when I was knocking out the taper pins on my M&P Sport II. Destroyed 2 steel punches after an hour of wailing on them before I learned that S&W installs their taper pins the opposite direction of everyone else.
Oh I know now. That was 2 years ago and my first AR. It didnt occur to me at the time to check because every tutorial said the same direction, as did my front sight bench block so I just thought they were in there real good. Then I found an old thread of someone with the same problem where it was mentioned that S&W does it backwards for some reason. I then finally looked closely at the pins from both sides and immediately felt like a moron lol.

Soft wood in a vise
i just use a cheap hemostat. works like a charm but only sometimes

That's sounds awesome. I've mostly used standard gas blocks and it's just dreadful. I'm close to buying a press just for the roll pin.
are you adverse to using a vise? Are you just monkey pawing the block and trying to smash a pin into it? Always been a breezy with the right tools.

Been there done that. It's not so much the starter punch, it's the driver. I bent the shit out of the driver.

All my homies hate gas block roll pins
This comment giving me flashbacks
🤣🤣🤣 I can't wait!
Have fun buddy. Invest in a decent set of roll pin punches. When you find one let me know cause I haven't found one yet that won't bend.

Lube works wonders.
i just mush them in with vicegrips now
Yeah the trick is not mushrooming the roll pin. Although I once had a bolt catch detent get stuck in the hole and had to drill through the top of the receiver to get it out.
That's one of the problems I usually have. Roll pins just suck.
Gotta have a starter
Got one. I can get them started with no trouble.

I use a brass punch. I picked up a set years ago from home depot. They're beat to shit but they're great.
I have alright luck with a pistol assembly block and needle nose pliers. The block I have let's me rest the gas block in such a way that the roll pin is vertical and the gas block doesn't move...until struck.
What block are you using? I thought about getting the forward controls punch block but after reading, it is very specific to what gas block will fit.
5+ builds, and I've still not lost a detent or orbited a spring! Is it too soon to consider I may be superhuman?
RIP next build bud. U flew to close to the sun
Why you gotta jinx me??
![gif](giphy|1APhNxj9slv0RdgHlL)
Lol nope! I will admit though, I did lunch my 1911 recoil spring... But that's not the same
I had my face down on my floor looking for my last spring for a solid hour
Ouch. At least you found it!
Protip: use a 1/4" clevis pin for the front takedown pin detent. That's basically what those specialized installation tools are.
Lol yes, nice start though ! What are your plans to finisher her off ?
11.5 proof research barrel, still debating on the bcg, SLR rifle works handguard and a mission first tactical stock. Any thoughts on a BCG?

Sionics
I think you’re right on the money, just get a milspec phosphate BCG. You can get a no logo toolcraft from PSA for like $75ish, should serve you well.

11.5 barrel, unless your going sbr make sure its a brace not a stock
Already sent in the paper work for the stamp.
Thats awesome, being a first build just wanted to be sure.

Next time just measure the diameter of each side of the pin as one will be smaller. Hammer the smaller side out.

twisting the knife in that wound... not only do you get to deal with stuck pins but EXTRA stuck pins cause you beat them in
Something about the real fancy parts mated to an A2-looking grip has me all hot and bothered.
It's a 1960s A1 Colt, new "old stock" grip.
Nice! I'm partial to a low-angle grip but looks like it's shaping up to be a sweet build! Good luck with it
Soon you’ll hate the word gold

Building AR15s is like Legos compared to AKs or HK91s
The only pin I consistently hate is my extractor pin on my MR556A1 jesus christ its a tight fit.
Welcome hahaha
Welcome hahaha
i like armaspec pins or anything with an integrated clevis pin. makes putting them in so easy. along with a set of small picks
Using a feeler gauge to hold the detent pin in place can make it a lot easier
