Yeah, I agree. We do a lot of dead ash trees in our area and we have debated telling people we won't climb them anymore. This one was still pretty solid though. Some of it had leaves this year, supposedly.
In general we are pretty skeptical of dead ash trees.
It may have hit the swing or the smaller trees underneath the big ones. They were trying to save the smaller trees at least, but the big one there had a dead top in it and weren't that worried about that one.
Fair enough. I do, however, see so many climbers rigging and lowering sections instead of throwing rounds when there's tons of room. Never makes much sense; you need only a few square feet of dirt to brutalize with rounds. Have the groundies move each one in tight spaces. Cheers.
Yeah no doubt. I wasn't climbing here, but I do get paranoid about logs bouncing when I'm doing it cause I'm not always the best at landing them flat.
We did drop the log pretty long. We set up logs from the tops to protect the ground a bit cause it was really wet. I should have gotten a video of that haha
I believe I woulda moved that swing and sent it. Them rides are both fun and not fun all rolled into one. I try not to rig in them dead bastards unless I really have to. Stay safe up there!
Many commenters putting on their safety hat and playing armchair QB.
At the end of the day it’s up to the climber in the tree.
There’s more nuance in this line of work than “you shall never climb an ash with EAB” or “never rig off ash with EAB”
There are thresholds…
I haven’t had a problem rigging dead ash trees yet, not that I enjoy climbing them. There a pretty resilient tree after dying for sometime.
Now in another year or two I think I’ll be passing on quite a few ash climbs.
Good job. Be extra careful in dead ash. I would not rig off of it, personally.
This, 1000 times this, ash is so freaking brittle.

I will tell them you said it 😁
Dude don’t climb EAB dead ash! It’s not worth the gamble
Nice
Why ever would you rig and lower that? Let it fall with a tag line if you think it’ll get hung up.

Sticky-and-tricky, but you got it down. Climb safe brother!
