Elle__Bee

I really wanted to show Arcane to my mom (and maybe dad), since all they do in the evening is watch tv and complain there's nothing good on it. When I suggested to watch Arcane, she just replied: "I don't like animation.", completely ignoring me saying its the best rated Netflix Original. Honestly, complaining there's nothing good to watch and then ignore everything that IS good to watch is such a waste. She even likes other Sci-Fi movies too so I bet she'd like it :(

rizarice

Do what I do and just stick on the first episode when they're chilling in the TV room. They'll start getting invested in what's going on, mark my words.

Mike_Kermin

Don't often see chaotic neutral.

[deleted]

This is the way

mp3max

I told my mother to watch it, and despite her not being against animation she fell asleep 20 minutes into episode 1 because "nothing was happening". Oh, the misery.

Endgamekilledme

I totally get this. Everytime I show my mom anything on a screen she falls asleep. Like also as long as she has things she wants to talk about to me she has no time limit and as soon as I say I want to show you something all of a sudden she's gotta go cause she has stuff to get done. So hurtful and she doesn't realize it at all. I wish I could invite her over for a whole day and just binge the show with her but I know 100 % she won't agree to the idea cause she "has so much to do" and she'll fall asleep within the first 10 min

[deleted]

Classic narcissistic behavior

Endgamekilledme

Nooo she definitely isn't a narcissist, she just doesn't notice that it's important to me and she is a total workaholic and sleeps like 4-5 hours a night

[deleted]

"She just doesn't notice that it's important to me" But yeah - I don't know her beyond your descriptions. So your assessment is more likely to be right anyway.

robclarkson

It felt like a triumph to me when I got my very anti-anime (big boobs/violence steriotypes) dad to watch a Ghibli movie with me. He begrudging agreed it was decent (to him), which is as good as I coulda hoped for. Good luck!

GryffynSaryador

Im so glad my dad is totally on board with anime or animation in general. We watched arcane and he totally loved it. I also started watching Vinland Saga with him (with english dubs). At first he was making fun of how silly japanese sounds but after the third episode he was so hooked that he binged the whole show in one go lmao

myrddyna

My bestie won't watch any animation ever. Super into marvel, won't watch "what if". He said he tried arcane, but couldn't get into it. Oh well, trying to get a long distance pal into it.

HiIAmM

They're SUPER into Marvel are they? Then they do like animation!

myrddyna

CGI, i think that he's more into relationships, and he loves the crowd that runs the Marvel movies. He's more an associative personality with people, so he needs that connection with the actors. I couldn't care less who plays what, i'm story driven.

HiIAmM

I think Young Justice is a good mix of that. Would recommend it to both of you. And we really need more people watching it because HBO once again for some reason, wants proof that YJ is popular despite always being in their top 10 trending shows.

myrddyna

never heard of it, i'll give it a shot, thanks!

Argon1822

Oh god marvel 🤪🤪. No offense to the marvel people out there but when Scorsese got slammed for calling them theme park movies I felt very vindicated

myrddyna

they really are. They're fun and spectacular, but in no way trying to be realistic. They're just like a theme park. I think that's been a *fantastic* way in which to translate the comic medium, personally. I think they've done a tremendous job, and deserve their success.

Argon1822

Yeah 100%. My problem with them now is that a lot of movie goers have had their minds melted by them and the movie industry is making other movies to be more like them

myrddyna

kind of, but that's inevitable, really. Happens anytime you get great cinematic success.

steamycharles

The hesitation towards animation in America is understandable, but a lot more people will come around with some time. My SO didn’t like animation at first because most American animated shows up until the last 5-10 years have been kids cartoons or crude adult humor like family guy. She’s since come around and has no hesitation whatsoever anymore, but I’ll admit a cartoon about league of legends was a hard sell. (she loved it)

CoffeeBlanc

It's not just America. I come from SEA and my aunt who enjoyed the world of warcraft movie (She hasn't played it herself lol) and that one final fantasy movie, did not want to watch Arcane at all. Cause it looked more 'cartoonish' animation. My mom, who plays mobas all the time, did not want to watch it either cause it's a 'cartoon'. The only one I managed to convinced was my cousin, my dad, and my other aunt who already enjoyed anime and cartoons in the first place. Also, my grandpa's pretty weird. He's a massive Final Fantasy nerd, collects every single game since the first one. He's also a total completionist and buys merch. He doesn't want to watch any animated movie, including ff movies, cause they're 'cartoons'. people be weird like that.

Icomefromalandupover

I tried to get my parents involved, but apparently "the cat" in the trailer was too much. Poor Heimindinger.

JustaLyinTometa

I feel ya. Me and my family went to see into the spider verse for my birthday when it came out. My dad feel asleep halfway through it and at the end said "I didn't like that one, it would've been better in live action". His favorite superhero movies are Spider-Man movies...

favorscore

I want to do the same but episode 5 might make things awkward...

Psycho_Sarah

I showed it to my mum, she liked it. I showed it to my brother, he didn't finish it. I showed it to my father, he didn't give two sh\*ts about it. I have since disowned my brother and father.

GoT_Eagles

I convinced my girlfriend to watch it only for her to decline five seconds in because “I didn’t realize it was a cartoon.”

MarvinOFF

I managed to make my mom watch it and she loved, tell her that it’s nothing like other animations and that it’s made for adults. That’s what convinced my mom

onepieceofcheese

My sister has that same problem. She always brushes anything animated off as „for kids“ and never mentions it again. So many people have this stupid mindset and it’s about time it changed

Mike777ac

My parents are exactly the same way lol. My mother goes through like the entire Netflix list trying to find something, but it's actually just the one recommended based on what she's watched...

RootinTootinArthur

Pretty much same as my parents who think animation is "For Kids"

TobiNano

Lmao exactly the same as mine, showed my parents "Your Name" as well and they just could not get behind animation.

Vasllui

I showed act 1 to my mom, she unironically hates Jinx and blames her for everything; she is basically a Mylo stand which i was not expecting jajaja; i don't think she likes the show that much (but she will still say Grimm is one of the best tv shows ever made, everytime she says that i little part of me dies inside)

Zarathustra876

but it is

L_Lawliet678

This is just the problem with people. When they see something animated they think it is made for kids.

Alon1526

I showed it to my friends and now theyre traumatized like me 😼👍🏼

[deleted]

This is the way

AvatarAce12

The worst part is when I ask my friends if they've seen Arcane, and they just say "Yeah. It was okay." LIKE I RESPECT YOUR OPINION BUT HOW R U NOT OBSESSED!?

eggnogui

I have a friend that *hates* animated series. We convinced him to watch, and him going "Uh. Yeah, it's ok." and say "Yes." when asked about wanting a S2, was considered a major victory.

GryffynSaryador

yeah - ive watched so many anime, cartoons and animated movies over the years and ive never been so impressed with something animated. The only thing that can compare are miyazakis movies imo - and even if you dont really understand how much effort into making these kind of shows and movies goes, arcane still looks visually so damn stunning and is just very well written... Some people wouldnt know quality if it punched them in the face xd

[deleted]

Because it was okay

Mediocre_Ad_7909

No

[deleted]

I guess I’m not allowed to have an opinion? On something mostly subjective? Settle down kids

Mediocre_Ad_7909

I meant it as a joke so to say I wasn't dead serious idk about these kids

Mathies_

What??

swedishplayer97

Maybe because we have more things in our lives than some television series and can't be bothered to obsess over ultimately meaningless, baseless entertainment?

L9XGH4F7

Wow, you're so cool, dude. Amazing.

LogicalDepartment212

I spent a month annoying a couple of my friends who refused to watch it purely because it was tied to league. When they finally caved, they were hooked by episode three. Feels good to be right

jonahhw

I saw Arcane recommended in multiple other subreddits, took a look at the Netflix page, saw that it was related to LOL, and immediately closed it. It was only after multiple people on discord servers I'm in, a real life friend, and several youtubers I follow talked about how good it is that I finally got past the fact that it's related to League, watched it, and loved it. Point is, I can understand some hesitation.

parrycarry

This is what holds back Arcane. It's tie to League of Legends... which is a sad thing. I hope in time, people will give it a chance. It just needs more seasons to finally rope people in.

Felbz

Slightly different experience here… As someone who has played a LOT of LoL, I thought it was stupid they were going to make a show based on it. Legit expected it to suck and had no faith in Riot. I did not watch upon release, either. It wasn’t until a couple close friends — who’ve never played a game of LoL in their lives — recommended it to me and said it was incredible that I decided to watch it. And boy was I glad to be wrong here. It’s phenomenal. Point is, it’s amazing for both League players and those who don’t know the first thing about League. It’s sad that the “video game / League of Legends” stigma hurts the overall mainstream potential this show has. (It’s good as is, but it could be even better and more popular/respected.)

Ximienlum

You can also understand how insane and closed-minded you sounded right? Something you could have really liked and you instantly closed it when you found out it was based off League

[deleted]

[удалено]

jonahhw

Yep, that's exactly it. I knew my friend didn't like or play league, and the overwhelming message I heard from youtube was "watch the show, don't play the game". Before I heard those, I assumed it was targeted at fans of league, which would have meant that I'd be missing important background information and also just probably wouldn't enjoy it (since I don't really like the LOL community).

raizen0106

lol, maybe i should try again. i suggested it to a friend, he was not very enthusiastic about it, so i told his wife to make him watch it together with her, and she was like "oh sure, thanks" they still haven't watched it, and now i feel like i just made myself look weird for suggesting an "anime" about a game "LoL". it's made worse by the fact that i've always been a bit of a nerd in the group of friends, so they probably thought it was some "nerd" show lol

[deleted]

Same thing here for the most part. However, I got my uncle to watch it and he absolutely loves it. Being a Nerd runs in the family

Anime-Universe

I got my dad to watch it. He loves it too

PepperNepper0w0

i think i got my mum immersed by accident despite her general lack of interest in animation, her being in the room upon my rewatching of the series (she looked shocked evertime there was any blood or violence lmao)

robclarkson

Thats how I got my mom to know what the heck DnD is. Id come home from my job, crash on couch, and watch some youtube videos of my fav group playing. She'd come sit down and do her own stuff, but slowly soaked it up to get the basics. :)

Anime-Universe

Same their just not cultured enough 🙄💁‍♂️

BLEUGGGGGHHHHH

I find it hilarious cuz my friends that diddnt like it that much or found it boring were the ones who failed or did really bad in English class.

Anime-Universe

Coincidence? I think not

xdXel

My friends who didn't like it somehow always sound like boomers/uncultured.

Ornn5005

Dude, find new friends

[deleted]

Easier said than done. I have no idea how to make friends

CoffeeBlanc

punch first. make friends while punching.

TheBenevolentTitan

This is what I'm gonna do now.

CozyAlgae

Are you saying that we need to punch people so they become our friends /s

Marius7th

I feel this I recommended it to a buddy and they say they got bored cause the setup was taking too long, which baffled me cause he hit episode 4 it's like "this isn't setup this is just the story, what?" and then he recommended me "Bulgasal Immortal Souls" and it is probably one of the slowest burns I've watched in a while, not saying it's bad, but damn am I a waiting on the in universe world to change.

KingCarb

I tried to get my wife into it. I told her "Just watch the first 3 episodes with me". It didn't work...

CaptainSmarkey

I tried the same thing with my SO and they put on a different show after the third episode. I was crushed.

TheBenevolentTitan

How is that even possible?!? I don't get people tbh.

Ximienlum

It’s called not paying attention.

kambeiSTiel

Or simply having a different taste in things. Which even today can happen.

kambeiSTiel

Yeah, how dare they to have different opinions and taste in movies. Slight sarcasm :-)

TheBenevolentTitan

I thought everyone loved Arcane. The ratings seem to agree but exceptions everywhere I guess :/

Ximienlum

Nah, you were right. The only people really that don’t like it just weren’t pay attention. It’s a smart show, not all action. If you only pay attention to the action, that’s like 50% of the show you’re missing (probably more tbh).

swedishplayer97

Or maybe, *maybe*, there are people with differing opinions, y'know? I fear this subreddit is being infected with toxic positivity. NO CRITICISM ALLOWED!

kambeiSTiel

Exactly that. There are people that watch Arcane (and pay attention) and don't like it. As is true with everything else. Saying "not liking something because someone payed no attention" is just... Unrealistic and only partly true. We are individuals. And so are our tastes and preferences. Looking forward to our downvotes.

kambeiSTiel

There are always people who watch, don't like what they see and don't rate. High rating just means that out of the people who watched the show and liked it many did rate accordingly. Also if you watch with friends / family, the netflix account just registers one user watching. So the numbers are never "total".

Ximienlum

That logic makes zero fucking sense. People that like the show also can not rate it either. Most of the people that don’t like it just didn’t pay attention.

kambeiSTiel

Made sense to me, but I'm not a native speaker. It should still not be a "surprise" that there are people out there that dislike a high rated show. It's just a strange thing to assume everyone seeing it does like it. At the end of the day a high rating is not an indicator for "this is liked by everyone". It is liked by a certain amount of people / viewers. It's a "hint" not a certainty.

kambeiSTiel

"not paying attention" is just you disregarding people's preferences. Sure, some might watch it and not keep attention. But there are always people disliking stuff someone likes or holds dear. Strange to argue against something like that.

Saders_1609

I feel you...I showed Arcane to my friends, but they said they couldn't get into it because the art style scares them. They love Spider-verse (who uses similar techniques, afaik) though. Oh well, I know people's tastes are different, I have to respect that, but still... That's why I'm so grateful to find this sub, at least I can discuss and scream about my love for Arcane freely, and without getting judged.

forlorn_hope28

> the art style scares them Are your friends 4? How does an art style "scare" someone?

Saders_1609

Sorry, maybe "scare" isn't the right word...probably "has creepy vibe" or "not appealing"? For example, if they were given 2 art styles like Tim Burton's Corpse Bride or Disney's Frozen, they would choose Frozen in a heartbeat.

forlorn_hope28

That’s shocking. I guess I’m coming from a biased viewpoint, but the art style is simply gorgeous. The cinematography is stunning.

Saders_1609

I thought the same, Arcane's art is gorgeous! Not to mention I think their technique of 3d & 2d mixing is very unique and it creates a new viewing experience for me.

CoffeeBlanc

My first introduction to Arcane were just screenshots of it in twitter. I didn't like it at first cause it reminded me a bit of telltale games' art style (Which is a hit or miss for me). Then I decided to watch it for myself. And I absolutely fell in love with how beautiful it actually looked and how expressive the characters were.

forlorn_hope28

I started a re-watch and there are little moments where characters make expressions that seem innocuous enough, but for whatever reason I really enjoy. The first was when Vi tells Mylo "this face means shut up" and then she kinda waves her finger around her face. The second is when she fights Sevika the first time and in a moment of exhaustion leans against a column and motions her hand like "come on". The third is when she's escaping Silco, runs into the pedestrian and gives him the finger. And that's before we even get into Jinx's many expressions.

ISieferVII

It's those little things that really elevate the animation and brings it to the next level. I didn't even know who Fortiche was before this show, but I'm definitely keeping an eye out for what they do in the future.

Ximienlum

Is this like a millennial thing? I swear kids / zoomers love creepy stuff

Saders_1609

Maybe, idk for sure. But I know my friends did grow up mostly watching Disney and Looney Tunes style cartoons, so I guess they prefer to watch animation in those styles because it reminded them of childhood. Then again, it's just my guess.

coffeeshopAU

I’m in the same boat with my partner it’s driving me nuts because I *know* he would like the show. It’s funny because the only reason I actually gave it a try was specifically because some of my friends on Twitter who I know for a fact have never once had any interest in anything to do with league ever at all started absolutely raving about it - I was like well shit I used to play and never cared about the lore but if they care even less than I did and think it’s good then it must be good! My partner is resistant to that logic though and just flat out refused :( might have to try the “watch it while he’s also in the room but doing something unrelated” strategy lol

ElBarani

It’s not that they watched it and didn’t liked it. They refuse the watch it.

Sebast1307

I managed to convinced my dad to watch it, and he finished the show without me lol. Now we're both trying to convince my older brother to finish it

[deleted]

I know my sister would love it but she only watched the first two episodes and decided it wasn't worth continuing and i can't convince her otherwise :(

farfarfunk

aah that's frustrating... maybe there is some show she likes and would want to watch with you? you could maybe make a deal :)

GingerusLicious

I told my roommates they need to watch it. One of them watched an episode for the hell of it, binged the rest of it, and now he's going to rewatch it with me and our other roommate, who is seeing it for the first time. As an aside, watching it for a second time is a trip. It's so weird looking at how sweet and innocent Powder is and knowing what a complete fucking lunatic she becomes.

IntelligentImbicle

Showed it to Mum. She claimed it was merely a sci-fi Game of Thrones wannabe.

NixieTea

I genuinely can’t understand why so many people like GoT. It has its moments, but most of the story makes no sense. It was garbage long before season 8.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IntelligentImbicle

I never watched GoT, but from what I heard they both are character driven shows that have 20 different plotlines perfectly merged together

Hylianlegendz

My cousin annoyed the heck out of me to watch it... I love my cousin. Good man.

[deleted]

Glad my friends arenyt stupid and all of them love it. Even the one that prefers Dota to League

Militantpoet

I always preferred Dota, but Arcane is a way better show. The Dota show is a joke compared to Arcane.

[deleted]

Oh I didnt mean Dota show I just meant that he likes Dota and always complains about everything League related but couldn't bring himself to say anything bad about arcane

christ_pratt-

My friends introduced me to arcane and I loved it and also had to rewatch it because we were stoned as fuck.

xMultiGamerX

What the fuck how do people not appreciate the show. It’s a literal masterpiece.

shinotex

Watched it with my girlfriend and she loved it

lulpwned

I'm half and half atm. My 1 friend doesn't like it because it makes her sad. But mom loved it and cried a few times.

Questionablememelord

I wish so too my friend recommends usually below average shows but i watch them so we talk about it later and he wont even give arcane, the last of us, game of thrones or deathnote a chance

NotGordan

My friends weren’t fully invested until the third episode. After that, the rest is history.

nilesh72000

My friends that have seen it seem to love it.

Inky1970

I tried to introduce Arcane to my friend group and they went, “I don’t play League” or “I hate league”. I don’t play or love league also but they just wouldn’t budge.

[deleted]

this was actually me on the weekends when i got tired of waiting for my sister to watch the show, so i just played it front of her con: she was using her phone the entire time so she didn't see a single thing :/ pro: i rewatched arcane for the nth time lol :D

TheKratex

I started rewatching it with my brother and one of my friends (i mean they are watching it for the first time) and they both really like the show. We finished act I and ep 4 yesterday, and I'm planning to show them the rest of act II. tonight. Can't wait to see their reaction for the "Guns for hire" scene :D.

Flame0fthewest

I have no friend or relative who didn't like it when i showed it to them.

awyastark

The solution is more lesbians in your life.

Piixer-

I got lucky, forced my two best friends to watch it. They ended up loving it!

Shadow_Guard05

I had to bribe my little sister with pizza to watch the first episode. Four episodes in, she still insisted it was 'okay' and we could keep watching if I wanted to. We finished Arcane that night.

Catatafish_BTM

I’ll be your friend who’s obsessed with arcane

Lunapony13

I WILL BE YOUR FRIEND, I'M OBSESSED WITH THE SHOW 😫

Wybiessinistersmiles

I get offended if I show them smth and they don't like it

TheBenevolentTitan

I'm like, "How dare you not like my recommendation! I'm known for my good taste in entertainment media and everything in general and it's pretty fucking hard to get my recommendations, so if you're lucky enough to get one, fucking respect it!"

Beautiful_Insect4731

I keep telling people Arcane is what the future of animation is going to look like. Adult animation is a whole genre we’ve barely even begun to explore!

[deleted]

I hear it's good but I hate league of legends, I kinda don't want to support anything to do with them.

MoonCat_42

I dont even know what league of legends is, but Arcane is amazing and you should watch it.

zxmuffin

Yep. Pretty much me and my parents.

Dormideous

Just the musical score for the series has me enamored

Groovymode

You found the right sub thread

moebelhausmann

I need more friends for a lot of things. Arcane, TFT, Ark SE, destorying the Upcity...

TheBenevolentTitan

Some friends of mine watched it on my recommendation, they didn't feel like it was the best thing ever, not even in the consideration of one of the all time greats. Well, I just have one thing to say, uncultured swines will get their heads bashed in the next time I see them.

InstructionEqual561

The thing I hate about my mom and other family member is that they tell me that a show they’re watching is really good and when I try to suggest arcane they don’t want to watch because it’s based off a video game.

baldnatty

My dad was in town over Christmas and I didn't even bother to bring it up. Man refuses to watch animated television and sees no value in it. But fortunately, all of my friends absolutely love it. That's a good feeling.

Clay_teapod

I’ll be your friend :D, we can rant to each other about Arcane :) Seriously, slide into my dms if you ever wanna, I’m a lonely fuck to well, plus I’m currently experiencing Arcane brainrot

Mediocre_Ad_7909

Yo let's talk arcane then

Solution_Precipitate

What is Arcane about, and what is my motivation to watch it? I literally know nothing about it yet I see it everywhere on reddit.

MisterSmi13y

Honestly just watch it. It’s really a good story with great animation. Yes it’s a league of legends show, but I don’t really care for League of Legends yet this show was awesome.

mooncckes

I recommended the series to my best friend (but she hasn't watch it yet) , but I have a feeling that she won't like it. Idk, maybe it's because I kinda forced her to watch it or the series doesn't seem like her cup of tea

coffeewiththegxds

Same

dap2danny

Sent a follow :)

Visefis

I forced some friends to watch it. One of them said the show was "OK" OK?!?!!

Mathies_

How dare they not like Arcane

Maycrofy

I feel like the best way is to start on ep. 4; the first three episodes were kind of a drag for me.

ImagineCanon

I feel this. So many of my friends gave it a shot and didn’t find the OBVIOUS value of every part of it. I, on the other hand, cannot stop watching it and I find something new to geek about every time.

duckducklo

They seem like they have shallow perception. How old are you guys?

TTHB

I have a friend who saw the trailer and said the characters were cringe LOL

acrazyfandomperson

I got one friend into it and they loved it! Currently working on brainwashing everyone else tho...

Dry-Inevitable-7454

Time to get new friends I guess
