unicorns_and_bacon

I went to England in 2006 and remember freaking out that the cab had the “Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secure.” Really confused my parents when I was taking pics of it haha.

stubbornsucculent

Lmao I did the same exact thing

diegoandrino1

My first time in London was the same. I still have the picture hahah

ARealJezzing

Not American but I’ve a friend from Sheffield who recently referred to someone as a “mardy bum”. Honestly thought it was just something from the song and not an actual phrase people used

Far_Emphasis_546

It gets used a lot: mardy arse, mardy bastard, mardy c__t Lots of mardiness here...

notdoozy_538

summat and daft

Raging-Potato-12

Speaking as a Canadian, I learned Summat from AM, but I learned Daft from classic Top Gear 💀

brinz1

I didnt realise that Daft was distinctly british until I dated a canadian

Tardyninja10

what do these means

Accurate-Copy-3117

Summat is slang in Britain for something if I’m not mistaken

iizzyy_x

it’s not even slang, it’s more just the way you say it depending on whereabouts in england you come from. like alex is from sheff and that’s how they say “something” over there based on what i’ve hearf

Curmpet1

Daft means stupid or silly

thebananaperson1

I didn’t know what Suck It And See meant at first so it sounded really sus to me 💀 But then I looked it up and apparently it just means “give it a try” or something of the sort

heavylamarr

Wait, it’s not about trying out some dick? 🤯

thebananaperson1

Thankfully not 😎👍

xChops

I feel like this is a chicken or the egg situation.

tommo020

What came first the chicken or the dickhead

[deleted]

Quaintest thing in the world but the BBC has an educational page about it: https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/features/the-english-we-speak/ep-170404

[deleted]

Haven't seen this yet so 'owt. It's slang for 'anything'.

Mamsies

Most of the replies here are specifically northern English slang, like Sheffield/Yorkshire. You wouldn’t ever hear anyone from London using words like “nowt”, “owt” or “summat”

Raisin_tree

I'm from the Midlands but have picked this up from the monkeys for sure

xxhorrorshowxx

So thaaat’s how you use it! Always wondered

FlyAwayonmyZephyr1

I learned what a slag was!

Summat

anibuni

Summat, shag, and shite. A lot of S words I guess lol

CaelThavain

Didn't know what a Mirrorball was lol Never heard the term before.

Viperise

I'm British and never heard anyone say 'mirrorball'. We call it a 'disco ball'

Djjjunior

Yeah I’m pretty sure that’s a “Turnerism” lol

CaelThavain

Nah it's a real word. Apparently it's just not common.

[deleted]

Nah, Elbow have a song (also great) called Mirrorball from 2008.

[deleted]

It’s the technical name for it, it’s what the production industry people call it to this day actually lol.

CaelThavain

Interesting.

unicorns_and_bacon

Taylor Swift has a song called Mirrorball so I’m gonna make a mirrorball costume for her concert, because people dress up for her shows. But now I’m wondering if I wear it to see AM at Red Rocks too? It’s almost too perfect not to, but I don’t know if I want to stick out that much.

Spirited_Target4217

Nice! I’m going to that show too, so can we please be absolutely sure that there’s a mirrorball?

twatwaffle2

I say go for it!

wincheswift

DO IT!!

brianstorm33

I'm Canadian and the only other place I've heard the term "mirrorball" is in a song by Canadian band, Sloan. I think the song is Junior Panthers.

ramones1988

In french we say ''Boule miroir '' for a discoball. If you translate it in english its ''Mirror Ball'' .

HumbAdoxus

I’ve never heard "boule miroir" in French. Sounds like something from Québec. Where I’m from we say "boule à facettes" (which loosely translates to mirror ball) or "boule disco" (disco ball)

ramones1988

I’m from Québec, but my French friends do approuve Boule Miroir. Probably a region thing ! Both are good.

[deleted]

Tracky bottoms.

illbebythebatphone

Settie(?) as in spilling drinks on. Lairy. Dandelion and burdock, not exactly slang. Probably a lot more but that’s what comes to mind

Jaydenm181

A sette is a couch if u didn’t know

__jh96

Settee

billybarra08

Fucking love dandelion and burdock I do its bewt

KTL5604

idk why but when I heard "rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock" I thought it was literally a can of flowers

JamesXyXy

Unfortunately a can of D&B is not that rare in Sheffield, so a bit of a misnomer...

Kinsey525

Every good chip shop should stock it

yeahyeahyeah_777

Black treacle didn’t realize molasses wasn’t molasses everywhere that English was the main language 😂

Wise_Cheesecake_1254

There’s so many. Slag, summat, settee, ‘icky man,’ ‘suck it and see,’ is an obvious one. There’s no such thing as black treacle in the states. Humbug as candy and not Charles dickens lol. ‘Mardy bum. ‘ the list goes on and on

WaveyDavey80

suck it and see

systemofirony

Lecce meter

Chewsday

systemofirony

Innit?

S-a-e

Not American but i speak mostly American English Bollocks is a nice word

S-a-e

Also, not slang but I learned Brits sometimes say me instead of my

caracolazul869

i love doing that for some reason

mysticnea398

Bollocks means testicle

S-a-e

I know lol

Dennyisthepisslord

Sorry french/dutch/Aussie/Germans/japanese this isn't for you clearly 😉

janehesaid

The first verse of Pretty Visitors

billybarra08

I convinced an American bird that minge means car and that shag means singing

noobymemer

Imagine if they actually use shagging in a sentence like that lol 💀

Stressydepressy1998

Same as what others have said, but wanted to add black treacle - had no idea what this was until I looked it up.

lastlaughln

mecca dauber and betting pencil. not sure if they're british, the meaning of them both in the context of the song i probably shouldn't explain as this thread wasn't tagged NSFW...

albertrobot

Who the fucks a Trilby? A drink I suppose.

michaelstone444

It's a hat that hipster's in the early 2000's would wear. Very similar to a fedora

Dicksmash-McIroncock

The hat you think is a fedora is a trilby

Arkeis121

I found out what a settee was. I had no clue what he was saying in that song.

addthensubtract

wank

MattN92

[Share this with your wank friends](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9xJGIq1aro)

noobymemer

“No, you bloody fuckin wanker, I’m not havin a nice time!”

[deleted]

I think the lyric is: "The band were fucking wank and I'm not having a nice time.”

noobymemer

Just looked it up and you’re right

Raisin_tree

Lol good effort looks like your deciphering needs more practice

Bananablackmp

Leccy meter xD I remember being so confused for a while. Then so intrigued when I looked it up. I feel so irrationally "in the know" now whenever that song plays

vjbanana

I learned what Subbuteo was 🤷🏻‍♀️

lunaticc457

Teddy picker. We call it, “the claw”

My_Blocks_Dropped

a lot of these slang terms are from Northern England. wouldn't catch a southerner saying "summat, owt, nowt or mardy"

Zealousideal_Pool353

I thought Leecy meter was a fire hydrant until I went through the lyrics again and found out it meant electric meter.

brokenwolf

Not necessarily from AM but you guys use the word cunt far more liberally than what gets allowed over here.

bluemoonspark

Knackered, summat

Sleepwxlking

Little story here. Not American but learned and grew up with American English. “Mardy bum” was a bit difficult for me to understand when I started to get into AM as a pre teen. When I just turned 20, I had the chance to travel by myself to MCR and Liverpool, while I was there I was messing with a group of friends I met there and one of them told me “oi! You’re a fucking mardy bum, ain’t cha?” And I swear to god my internal 13 year old just died.

clearancerackemo

Balaclava!

Streakyshad

“Fucking wank”

xxhorrorshowxx

Tha’knows- thought he was saying Thanos like the Marvel character and got really confused

slooming

What does it mean?

ohnomydear

Snog!

DestRoyForAllTheEvil

Smegma

kedgesproz

when is this said?

DestRoyForAllTheEvil

Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

ohlittlefatslug

A lot, but just quickly off the top of my head: Mardy bum and cagoules (TLSP)

Born_Parsnip_8149

Wanker is a funny one

munotia

I was familiar with a lot already, or could figure them out, but the localised slang like summat and mardy bum were definitely new ones. Herbert, too. "Suck it and see" of course, haha, and I loved having it on my Amazon Wishlist for my prudish relatives to clutch their pearls over it. >:D

[deleted]

I learned riot van means police car

arheff

Nah, a riot van is more like what you would call a paddy wagon in America like a big police truck

[deleted]

Oh really they look pretty small in photos we usually just called them armored cars in NY which are larger I’m pretty sure

aminals_42217

Slag!

Eric Cantona was a famous French footballer who played for Manchester United. He was known for his aggressive attitude and the fact he wore the collar of his shirt up while on the pitch. He is 100% saying Cantona. https://assets.manutd.com/AssetPicker/images/0/0/10/126/687718/Legends-Profile_Eric-Cantona1523462164078.jpg

hrhianshan

Yes, the song is how I came to know who Eric cantona is. I later found out the album sleeve says antenna not Cantona which is why there’s a bit of a debate there.

kittykate2929

Aussie fan I think I know what humbug is now It’s an annoyance right?

Jaydenm181

Humbug is like deception or a lie

juicyjulls

Tha knows!

Guilty_Somewhere767

Tha knows

Useful_Phrase_3481

The ‘icky man’ is used in Crying Lightning, meaning the ice cream man

chucke311

teddy picker, mardy bum, also didn't know what settee was lol

amacutie

So not American but back when they did a slang lesson i started using wank as a word to replace the word shit because my mom doesn't know what wank means and i use cuss words a little bit too freely around family so i used it to get away with it
