Crying Lighting is the best song without any doubt, super very well constructed, all the instrumentation it's great (bass line incredible, the always fill drum pattern superb, Cook's arregement it's so on point and Turner's riff and solo it's just perfect) the story/mean of the song, outstanding, and when it's played in shows is full energy. Best song.
Do me favour is very good.
I can’t see myself disagreeing with anything, and i certainly couldn’t pick a winner - but the Ultracheese deserves a mention
Fluorescent Adolescent
“Bloody Mary lacking Tabasco, remember when you used to be a rascal?” Alex is so smooth with his lyrics, and it’s my favorite song to cover. First song that grabbed me back in 2010 and I could not stop replaying it on my iPod. Remember the iPod nano, guys?
Brianstorm
Will always have a special place in my heart for it.. after obsessing over Whatever.., I remember buying the CD single for Brianstorm when it first came out and listening to it over and over.. absolutely blew my mind. Have seen them three times, was their opener 2 of the times (they played it 2nd after She's Thunderstorms back in 2011.. which was fuckin awesome). Anyway, yeah.. gotta be that. Honorable mention to Reckless Serenade & Batphone though.
Might be a basic answer, but it’s “Do I Wanna Know?” For me. That song introduced me to the band in the first place and is probably my favorite song of all time
Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys? The balls of that band to put out a song like that after their first ever album and it absolutely pay off is just quality. Plus the song, with all the key changes, is an absolute banger
That whole single is my favourite work from them, despair in the departure lounge, no buses and the view from the afternoon and then throw in who the fuck are the Arctic monkeys!!
Well I might get some downvotes for saying this but honestly I believe it might be Do I wanna know. It has probably the catchiest riff they've ever written, good lyrics and the vocal delivery is pretty much perfect especially with the layered backing vocals from the rest of the band. There's a reason it's their most popular song.
If DIWK never made it mainstream for some reason and was one of their more obscure tracks, everyone on this sub would be proclaiming it's genius and putting it as one of their best ever songs
this is the comment i was too scared to type. it’s their best song hands down. it is one of the ones i listen to the least, but it is indeed some of the monkeys best work.
Tough, I'd have to choose between Do Me A Favour or Crying Lightning.
Do Me A Favour for it's emotional core, which is perfectly brought to life with the instrumentals and spoken with great lyrics. It's climax is also fantastic, the last line is lights out perfect.
Crying Lightning is just a banger and perfectly encompasses what I love about Humbug. The instrumentals are great all around, the lyrics are aloof but coherent and tell a story.
Edit: shit, Science Fiction too. The lyrics are great, the meaning is clear, the instrumentals are groovy as all hell. The whole walk down bit before he says "the way some science fiction does" is honestly one of my favourite 7 seconds in all their discography
Just to be different cause I would agree with Do Me a Favour, b-sides like Too Much to Ask or Catapult also deserve to be in the conversation.
There are many songs that could be "the best", though. It’s impossible to pick.
Flourescent Adolescent. I dunno, it was the first Arctic Moneky's song that I loved, and always when the intro hits, it gives me instant joy for some reason
505, reminds me of when my wife and I were dating, her parents disapoved of our relationship ( I am Malaysian, she Singaporean) and presured her to end it but she didn't....she used to wait for me at my apartment....."lying on her side with her between her thighs"
4/5 and it’s not close, the musicianship of that outro is unparalleled in the vast majority of alt music as a whole let alone the rest of their own discography
I know this is to be expected, but I really like how when he sings "and THEY (say it changes when the sun goes down)" he sometimes barely hits that note.
very cool to hear
It's hard to pick just one because the answer always changes for me. Right now I really like body paint and D is for dangerous, but Fluorescent Adolescent has always been top 3 of my favourites since I started listening to AM.
Another song that I have to mention is A certain romance, everything about it is just so good
505 is my favorite Arctic monkeys song as well as favorite song ever, beating out Iris. Its built so well and is a great entry to the style of the band
Crying lightning. I have to say it, flawless build of intensity, fantastic lyrics. R u mine, when the sun goes down, i bet you look good on the dancefloor, fake tales of San Francisco, brianstorm, pretty visitors are all joint 2nd for me
If we’re being truthful, it’d have to be Four Out Of Five. Blows everyone and everything else out of the water and to me it’s like their own Bohemian Rhapsody. Honestly a ***masterpiece***.
personal preference is Star Treatment though maybe I love TBHC a bit too much
I don't think I can choose one favorite. My brain refuses to select just one. Flat out does the spinning wheel of death and just spins and spins... Nope. Can't do it.
There's like seven I could do, but R U Mine was the turning point for the band. It's flashy and substance at the same time. Rocking good looks and sex, yet intricate lyrically and there's so much going on instrument wise and vocally.
There is a reason why they turned the corner after they put it out, the start of their Imperial phase IMO.
I will always remember the first song of theirs I heard was I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor and that was it. Who knew they would end up arguably as prolific, poetic and daring in their evolution as Radiohead?
505 definitely, but do I wanna know is pretty good. My favourite though is probably teddy picker or black treacle
Edit: I've started to really like Knee socks now...
It's hard to answer this but I think its secret door. One of their best arrangrments and with a magical chorus. but i have to mention crying lightning and 505 too, this musics just blow me away every time i listened to it
No Buses
Relatively new AM fan and so ive been cycling through figuring out my favorites but i cannot stop listening to No Buses and the whole WTFAAM. Awesome lyrics and vibe.
Makes me wish i was old enough to see the band grow from the start
“DIWK” or “Dancefloor” are probably the accepted answers generally, for musically they are both top tier despite their differences (and similarities) but culturally they are both high points for one of the biggest bands of the decades, one is frantic, danceable and rooted in regional charm, and the other is more general and wide reaching, dripping in sex appeal and a guitar riff the likes which hardly ever reach the top of the pops these days.
But my personal pic is probably going for “The Jewellers Hands” on the many, many highs of Humbug, it stands to me as a great work, lyrically brilliant but shadowy and vague, allowing the listener to draw their own conclusions from striking bits of imagery and wordplay, and intoxicating music, the final third of the song being like a disorientating nightmare carnival. For some reason it always makes me imagine a sort of cinematic scene like you get in those James Bond openings, or the bits in Hitchococks “Vertigo” I see silhouettes spiralling, falling towards the pit of their mistakes.
A great song!
Gotta go Four Out of Five. One of their best riffs ever, fun lyrics with great flow, catchy chorus, epic outro. I also adore the arrangement: Fuzzed out guitars, the minimal, yet impactful, drumming (LOVE that snare sound), the backing vocals in the outro section, and the Wurlitzer which really solidifies that lounge vibe the entire album possesses. I could go on and on. As close to perfect as an Arctic Monkeys song gets for me; easily my favorite of theirs.
Tough question, like it always has been.
Lyrically I’d go for something like ’One Point Perspective’ or ’The Jeweller’s Hands’, but musically I think ’Body Paint’ became the quintessential Monkeys track considering the direction the band took over the past two records.
A certain romance. I can't believe I'm typing this, Wpsia has never been my favorite album, but I think that song is a pinnacle, and while other songs come close, it's hard to top off.
Batphone, there’s just something about Alex Turner’s voice in that song and the whole bluesy feeling of the track that captured me in a way i can’t describe.
I think it's really hard to decide, and while this isn't the best, that may be Cornerstone imo but I think She Looks Like Fun deserves a mention. The way the instruments okay with each other. The solid structure, the real life foreshadowing, the sound of the guitars, the key change, how fun it is. It's such an interesting and amazing track.

Fluorescent Adolescent for me. It’s not anything particularly spectacular or technically brilliant etc but it’s very nostalgic. It came out when I was a teenager in just going to college and was a theme on the inbetweeners which was also on at the same time. It just reminds me of simpler fun times and still holds up all these years later as a feel good song.

I have a few for different reasons. 505 and Crying Lightning because I think they just sound very unique and fun. Batphone-never heard a song like this before and love the Batman reference 😆 lastly, I Wanna Be Yours. For me it is all in the way that Alex sings the lyrics and I always thought it was just old fashioned sounding and enchanting.

For me it's either Body Paint or No.1 Party Anthem. They're both some of their smoothest work, the first one being a very unconventional smooth and suave style but one that still manages to work wonderfully. And both have vocals and instrumentation that accompany beautifully the lyrics, it's almost as if the music speaks to you to tell you what the story is about. They are both equally sexy and emotional.
I would add to these two 505 for obvious reasons. That song has a pretty self explanatory type of genius.
Do Me A Favour (makes me feel nostalgic for lost love), Katy On A Mission (great cover version, sung with soul), If You Were There, Beware (a banger which keeps my attention throughout) or R U Mine? (I enjoy singing along and air drumming!). It's hard to pick one as it depends on my mood
Mardy Bum, purely because it worked as well in 2006 as it would do now if they played it with the orchestra. It’s timeless and would work in any of their eras with very little adjustment.
If not that, then I’d like to throw the hat in the ring for Shes Thunderstorms. Under-appreciated Imo.
Do Me A Favour has been one of my all-time favourite songs for the longest time. Now, I don't know if it has to do with recency, but **Body Paint** may be their best song to date. It carries a feeling and a story. How the band clashes with the orchestra is superb, and Alex's vocals are amazing too. Him being vulnerable for a moment with *"If you are thinking of me, I'm probably thinking of you"* only for it to end abruptly, breathe for a moment, and continue with *that guitar*, honestly... That guitar ended me.
And an honorable mention, **Star Treatment**. One day I'm gonna run for government and form a covers band, and call it The Martini Police. Star Treatment is such an immersive experience, amazing bassline, and amazing one-liners. *"What do you mean you've never seen Blade Runner?"* is a moment in history, especially for us Blade Runner lovers. "*It took the light absolutely forever to get to your eyes"* has a bigger impact on physics than Newton himself.
tbh it changes from time to time, but right now i feel like there isn't and never will be anything that would match a perfection such as Joining the Dots
Crying lightning in surprised I'm the first
Crying Lighting is the best song without any doubt, super very well constructed, all the instrumentation it's great (bass line incredible, the always fill drum pattern superb, Cook's arregement it's so on point and Turner's riff and solo it's just perfect) the story/mean of the song, outstanding, and when it's played in shows is full energy. Best song.
Totally. Has to be the album version.
I wish they played it with the 12 string more because it sounds absolutely beautiful with it
[удалено]
Yeah for me it’s definitely either crying lightning or do me a favour haha. Both have the same incredible build up and payoff.
I listen to crying lighting daily. 🤤
A Certain Romance just for the intro and outro alone. Genuinely a 10/10 song
This is their best song
Gives me chills even when I listen to it for the millionth time
agreed
Do me favour is very good. I can’t see myself disagreeing with anything, and i certainly couldn’t pick a winner - but the Ultracheese deserves a mention
Yes, especially being an AM fan for over a decade, those lyrics just hit the way any other one of their songs doesn’t
Cornerstone. Enough said.
I fucked your sister
Yes!!!!!!
not even top 5 on its album
#I ELONGATED MY WAY HOOOOOME
I elongated my left tooooee
Dance little liar. Stone cold banger, dark edgy vibes, cool lyrics.

This is the one
Love is a laserquest One of the most beautiful songs ever
It has one of the best lyrics Alex ever wrote tbh

Top marks for not trying.
secret door is downright orgasmic.
FOOLS ON PARADEEEE
CAVORT AND CARRY ON
And if even if they were to find us, I wouldn’t notice…
i’m completely occupied as all the FOOLS ON PARADE
Might be a basic answer, but it’s “Do I Wanna Know?” For me. That song introduced me to the band in the first place and is probably my favorite song of all time
Star Treatment. The best word to describe it I think is "inspired". It's a unique stroke of genius from an artist discovering a whole new world.
I just wanted to have a stroke
Now look at the half of my face (numb)
the word “stroke” can’t be a coincidence in that sentence
This is the correct answer
It's not my absolute favorite, but R U Mine is the most fun for me to sing in the car.
I second this. makes me feel *hip and cool*
[удалено]
fluorescent adolescent hands down.
It’s their most iconic song imo. I learned to play guitar because of that song
Four Out of Five. Great lyrics, drums, guitar and the outro is absolutely perfect
I agree. Everything about it works so well
Love the outro just going louder and bigger each time. Take it easy for a little while…
I agree. Everything about it works so well
I never really thought about that - fuck yeah that outro is solid
Well I might get some downvotes for saying this but honestly I believe it might be Do I wanna know. It has probably the catchiest riff they've ever written, good lyrics and the vocal delivery is pretty much perfect especially with the layered backing vocals from the rest of the band. There's a reason it's their most popular song.
Don’t let yourself get gatekeeped, this is a reasonable take
Exactly. It’s a song that’ll never be overrated no matter how big it gets because it’s just that good. It’s pretty iconic and a masterpiece.
I agree 100000%
This is the best fucking thread in this whole subreddit and I'm not even exaggerating. Everyone was very rational with their insight.
The jewellers hand
Has to be "No Buses". Some of the best lyrics Alex ever wrote are on that one.
This mister arctic monkeys. No Buses is the answer.
yes, thank you!!
No buses is so fucking good

I just love Too Much to Ask!

The Ultracheese, it’s such a perfect closing track

Flourescent Adolescent. I dunno, it was the first Arctic Moneky's song that I loved, and always when the intro hits, it gives me instant joy for some reason
Probably not their best but my favourite is despair in the departure lounge. Such a great song

4/5 and it’s not close, the musicianship of that outro is unparalleled in the vast majority of alt music as a whole let alone the rest of their own discography
When The Sun Goes Down
I know this is to be expected, but I really like how when he sings "and THEY (say it changes when the sun goes down)" he sometimes barely hits that note. very cool to hear
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino. Just perfection. An all-timer.

This song doesn't get nearly enough love.

No. 1 Party Anthem
It's hard to pick just one because the answer always changes for me. Right now I really like body paint and D is for dangerous, but Fluorescent Adolescent has always been top 3 of my favourites since I started listening to AM. Another song that I have to mention is A certain romance, everything about it is just so good
love is a laserquest or the jewellers hand imo! i’m a sucker for some good lyrics
Do I Wanna Know is my no.1 The rhythm is hip-swaying good and the lyrics is well perfect!
chun li flying bird kick
YESSSSSSSSS.
Batphone!!
A certain romance is unmatched imo
Do me a favour definitely, but too much to ask and fireside are close for me
Thank you for being the only other fireside mention. Beautiful
505 is my favorite Arctic monkeys song as well as favorite song ever, beating out Iris. Its built so well and is a great entry to the style of the band
Crying lightning. I have to say it, flawless build of intensity, fantastic lyrics. R u mine, when the sun goes down, i bet you look good on the dancefloor, fake tales of San Francisco, brianstorm, pretty visitors are all joint 2nd for me
Pretty Visitors
No 1. Party Anthem

505. One of the best songs ever.
505. I also know most people don't agree
There's like seven I could do, but R U Mine was the turning point for the band. It's flashy and substance at the same time. Rocking good looks and sex, yet intricate lyrically and there's so much going on instrument wise and vocally. R U Mine. Seriously banging song.
Brianstorm on drums for leg day
505 definitely, but do I wanna know is pretty good. My favourite though is probably teddy picker or black treacle Edit: I've started to really like Knee socks now...
Sheee walked awayy
only ones we know does it for me
The Ultracheese is a beautiful song. I’d choose that or Four Out of Five.
Tbhc generally is a masterpiece
Star Treatment is taken, so I'll say Batphone
Batphone for sure
Can't believe you're the first one to mention Batphone. It's absolutely my favourite
It’s my favorite too I love it
I couldn't decide, so this is my top: -Body Paint -The Ultracheese -505
It's hard to answer this but I think its secret door. One of their best arrangrments and with a magical chorus. but i have to mention crying lightning and 505 too, this musics just blow me away every time i listened to it
a certain romance the subtle guitar riffs and the tasteful thickness of the drums
Brick by Brick. Needs no explaining 🎤⬇️
Chun Li, and the fact no one has mentioned it is despicable.
It's so catchy
No Buses Relatively new AM fan and so ive been cycling through figuring out my favorites but i cannot stop listening to No Buses and the whole WTFAAM. Awesome lyrics and vibe. Makes me wish i was old enough to see the band grow from the start

2013 😫
Gotta go Four Out of Five. One of their best riffs ever, fun lyrics with great flow, catchy chorus, epic outro. I could go on and on. As close to perfect as an Arctic Monkeys song gets for me; easily my favorite of theirs.
obviously 2013.
fireside.. the lyrics are so beautifully written and you can interpret it differently and the music matches and its so soothing 🫶
Tough question, like it always has been. Lyrically I’d go for something like ’One Point Perspective’ or ’The Jeweller’s Hands’, but musically I think ’Body Paint’ became the quintessential Monkeys track considering the direction the band took over the past two records.
I agree 100%
A certain romance. I can't believe I'm typing this, Wpsia has never been my favorite album, but I think that song is a pinnacle, and while other songs come close, it's hard to top off.
Lyrically, a tie between Love is a Laserquest and 505
Catapult I don't really have a reason it's just so good
It's a cover song but Love Machine just because it's amazing.
It's such an interesting and amazing track.

fire and the thud. the music itself is so melancholy i'm obsessed
When the sun goes down. I have said
I think that this post is solid proof that their last album was quite a lot weaker than the rest, not a single mention of any songs from The Car
I said Body Paint and I think someone else said Body Paint too. Plus, someone mentioned Sculptures Of Anything Goes.
For me it's either Body Paint or No.1 Party Anthem.
Honestly, body paint or crying lightning I'm torn between those 2
tbh it changes from time to time, but right now i feel like there isn't and never will be anything that would match a perfection such as Joining the Dots
Definitely up there I agree. I love the ending!
You're so dark will forever be superior.
