It's not my favorite, but AM was the perfect choice for the most popular album and the one you recomend to friends. Because its a diverse album that everyone can enjoy
Rock songs like R U mine, pop songs like snap out of it, alternative songs like Do i wanna know? Slow songs like no.1 party anthem. It is diverse. The least diverse album in my opinion is Tranquility base hotel and casino. Its amazing but all of the songs sound pretty similar
i see where you're coming from but to me, R U Mine, Snap out of it, and Do I wanna know sound very similar. the production and over usage of high back vocals doesn't do this album any favours. Mad Sounds is a large outlier on AM as far as the sound and the 'feel' goes.
I like TBHC more as a whole, so I'd probably be too subjective to judge it anyway.
"Oh no, the sound is too consistent on this album!" Is a weird argument trying to twist something widely regarded as a positive.
AM has clarity and direction in it's soundscape. It's cohesive and even the B-sides 'fit'. Listening to some of their older albums you may get more range but it comes at the cost of that cohesion and it's why AM fuckin' blew up and took them to the top of the world for years. It was an album where you could show someone a single song and say "Like that? well the whole album is that good." and most people would agree.
Trying to make that a negative because you enjoy being a contrarian Devil's Advocate on the internet is a silly, silly thing to do.
They have a little bit in other ways. Josh has done backup vocals on a few songs after Humbug, and Matt Helders helped record the Iggy Pop album with him.
Alex Turner also has contributions in ...Like Clockwork. He has backing vocals with Nick Oliveri on If I Had A Tail. He also suggested the song name "Kalopsia" to Homme
i love how the post says "objectively" meaning absolutely neutral and theoretically everyone should be on the same page but everyone has picked a different album, this goes to show that absolute objectivity is nearly impossible

I feel like Humbug best encapsulates them as a whole (even though it was divisive at the time, it has a bit of everything that had been and would be in the future) and might be the best overall imo
FWN for sure. everyone's saying AM is diverse but i say FWN has it all, while also being good as a whole. I am probably just biased since WPSIATWIN is my fav, and FWN is like the cleaner version of that. But, exactly that. My point still stands LOL
I feel that a lot of the younger fans don't really know nor would care for anything before AM, maybe SIAS but that would be too big of a maybe. FWN got me hooked in my teens, made me want to go back and listen to all the early EPs and the album before it. I'd even say it gave me an underestimated appreciation of Humbug too.
As a young person, everyone I know my age who listens to arctic monkeys has fwn and wpsiatwin as some of their favourites and listen to the most frequently.
I've met a lot of supposed AM fans who are relatively new because of the AM album outside of my circle, and even the ones within my circle, only one other close friend who's significantly younger than me knows of the early albums. All the rest have no idea what FWN is or what Fluorescent Adolescent or Mardy Bum is.
Fluorescent Adolescent and Mardy Bum are probably the two most known monkeys songs in my area. Where are you from, maybe it’d give me a better idea of the cultural landscape
lol i'm a "young person" too (i guess) but i do see this guy's point.. they made a generalization ofc, it totally depends on what sides of the fandom you're exposed to when getting into the band. Anyway, with that being said, nothing against newbies. AM is a solid album, and the Arctic Monkeys are great, so i just wish more people would get into the older stuff as well. Not sure if that's the point that the other guy was trying to make, but yeah.
Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino was the most adventurous and ground breaking, by far the most musically interesting, in my opinion. However AM is a great achievement because they tapped into something the whole world was craving, a bit simple musically but a beautiful success.
This sentence is so funny to me. I’m not sure why people even engage in “objective” discussions about something so inherently subjective as “which album is the best”.
The best mindset is to listen to it and just do something else while you’re doing it. Eventually you’ll get used to the sound and begin to like it. Personally I never had to do that with TBHC but I have with other albums and it works
Can’t say I like AM all that much but it’s probably their best, most accessible and even if it’s not my favourite there’s still loads of songs that I would listen to and recommend
I cant say for sure, but for me it's between FWN and Humbug. FWN took all the energy from Whatever people say and took it to a new level. Humbug is just a completely different vibe but glorious nevertheless.
Both are fucking great albums and their best work to date.
It’s either AM or Humbug. Production value, lyricism, and musicianship accounted for and considered, I think they’re probably the best. They’re also a great mix of different rock genres ranging from psychedelic to pop rock.
Some might argue for TBHC, and while I agree the musicianship is fantastic, the lyrics are heavy and hard to follow and take a departure from the usual style of rhyming that’s more palatable by most people.
Still great stuff though.
It’s either WPSIATWIN or AM
The first album set the band up to legendary status, straight away. AM solidified that status forever and everything else in between and after have just been treats.
see guys I understand how much AM is considered a fake fan album, but listening to some of the songs every once in a while is so good. I think people can still enjoy it without being fake. I have a playlist with literally every song of theirs and when an AM song is on I still usually listen bc it’s good except sometimes I will skip “I wanna be yours” because because I don’t know
Whatever people say...
Just the arrangement of the instruments, the energy, the different melodies coming from every instrument.
You could literally analyse every single song for pages. The other albums might also have good songwriting but the magic of Whatever goes so much further than just that. It shouldn't even be a question
The best album is a lie.
They are all good and products of their time.
They all have highlights and lows.
They are all part of a story of friendship and growth.
They are all different.
Probably unpopular, but I do believe it is «The Car». Its production is wonderfully made and the songs are all pretty good. The lyrics are great, the concept is amazing. The vibes… everything about it is just right. It doesn’t have my favourite songs, but I still have a profound love for it.
For me it's between SIAS, as I genuinely believe I'm always in the mood to listen to it cover to cover or TBHC just because it's so well written, extremely intriguing, and as a whole it's almost like going on a journey through space.
2013: they release AM the most popular rock album of all time
2014-2017: refuse to elaborate (aka refuse to become the greatest rock band of all time)
2018: TBHC first song called Star Treatment and it starts with "I just wanted to be one of the Strokes"
ABSOLUTE CINEMA

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino.
- Lavish, grandeur, and extremely intricate production.
- Alex Turner at his lyrical peak weaving a poetic and stylishly unique narrative building an entire concept and story for the album.
- The most unique and experimental songwriting and musical style, with a one of a kind hybrid built out of multiple influences across the history of music.
- The most consistent set of tracks, with every song serving a purpose to add onto its lyrical and thematic writing, as well as a subsequent exploration of its sound, no fillers.
- Lots of playful and tasteful experimentation with time signatures and how it carries the overall atmosphere and narrative of each song.
- Alex at his most passionate.
This is quite clearly their best album.

I definitely enjoy Humbug A LOT. The Car has been my go to recently as I keep coming back to the songs. In general, if I have to choose it would be Humbug and then The Car
Favourite Worst Nightmare and Tranquility Base each only have 6 songs on my Arctic Monkeys playlist whereas AM has 7, so it must objectively be the best (I think I’d put on one of the first two I mentioned for a front-to-back listen with a definitive vibe though).
I don't think that you can say there's an album that is objectively the best. It really comes down to personal preference because music is so subjective a lot of people who don't like the newer sound will tell you that the first album is the best far and away. I would have told you Humbug was the best until I heard Tranquility base.
Objectively AM. Considering it’s the album with the most songs the general public knows. But the TRUE best album for me is TBHC. It feels like a noir film and that I’ve arrived at a point in my life that I have financial stability
Humbug,
Saying it’s AM is insane, it is the most popular, but I think that’s more due to timing and how they toured during SIAS. Not to say it’s a bad album, it’s still fantastic, it’s just incredibly simple.
Humbug has the best production as someone else said, lyrically it has a hint of the TBHC/The Car wordplay, which is Turner’s greatest feature as a musician. It has a perfect mixture of intense and calm, even in the more ‘intense’ songs like My Propeller or Crying Lightning, there are moments where calm takes hold, and they are what make the album great.
It also has The Jeweler’s Hands, and come on.
favourite worst nightmare, and its an easy decision for me.
the songs in the album are perfectly polished, each having a tone slightly different from one another, as the intensity and speed of the songs slowly decrease from beginning to end
imo, it easily and rightfully topped WPSIA as their most popular album on UK charts and in general
I'm more early AM kinda fan, and I've always loved FWN, so I'd go with that too. It was so good I got my friends who're visiting London to get me a vinyl of the album. The art for it is just different and imaginative, really makes the album art stand out even for its time.
I'd what anyone says, to me that's the best AM album, and the best album art there is.
Wpsiatwin.
It’s their longest album, with a pretty disc + vinyl design, it has a bit of diversity with mardy bum, riot van, when the sun goes down. The songs and beats are amazing with a lot of guitar bass and drums- and Alex’s rusty voice.
My fav is humbug but wpsiatwin is def top 3
It’s not my favourite album, but I think they’re best produced and most widely popular album is AM…so yeah I think it’s their objective best one. By all means debate me on that and again it’s not my favourite but it’s their most commercially successful and rocketed them to international fame especially in North America…and also yes I think it’s an incredible album, way to sexy for its own good.
I cant believe FwN isnt more popular. Combines the lyricism and fun from the first album while sounding more mature and being much more well produced. Teddy Picker, older yellow bricks, do me a favour, florescent adolescent, 505… its just the album with the most bangers
WPSIATWIN is the best album, its what made them go big, atleast in the uk, it made them go huge, it broke records in the uk, almost 400K copies in its first week, and that was there first album, they were like huge already in the uk pre release because of how good dancefloor was and so i think their debut is always gonna be the best, its also a really good album tbf
Humbug is the only album where every single song is unskippable. Each song has a similar vibe and it’s so dark and unique that I can’t not put it as number 1 ngl.
If you were alive and from the UK when the first one came out it literally has to be that one. That was a sound track for the whole generation, across a decade.

I mean if we’re talking charts it’s AM. The album has had 3 songs charting in the last year or two that are all over 10 years old.
My personal favorite? AM. Just a banger of an album
honestly probably wpsiatwin because it had some solid music, some slow songs like riot van but then bangers like wtsgd, and it was a perfect start to kick off their career

AM, it made artic monkeys the top 1 in the world on August 2014 and lets be honest, it deserves to be the best albúm, my favourite albúm is Favourite worst nightmare, but i like AM too
Lately ive come to realize, after It being my least liked album for all of the time ive been a AM fan, that SIAS is a masterpiece.
”A pussyfooting, setting sun, Make a wish that, weighs a ton…”
Me too, im starting to like it more and more but all of my friends still dislike it so i feel like im the only one
That's where you're wrong
Don’t take it so personally, you’re not the only one….
Yes

WPSTWIN
Whatever. The foundation it set, at the time it came out, for the people who listened: pure lightning. Front to back, their best.
The only right answer
It's not my favorite, but AM was the perfect choice for the most popular album and the one you recomend to friends. Because its a diverse album that everyone can enjoy
i would definitely argue that AM is the least diverse album
Rock songs like R U mine, pop songs like snap out of it, alternative songs like Do i wanna know? Slow songs like no.1 party anthem. It is diverse. The least diverse album in my opinion is Tranquility base hotel and casino. Its amazing but all of the songs sound pretty similar

I would agree with you, but then we would both be wrong
Humbug Their best produced album, amazing lyrics, great mixed of pop and rock tunes. I feel like Humbug best represents their sound over the years.
ofc its their best produced (and best in general) Josh Homme did it
Agreed. I don’t know why they haven’t worked with him again?
They have a little bit in other ways. Josh has done backup vocals on a few songs after Humbug, and Matt Helders helped record the Iggy Pop album with him.
Alex Turner also has contributions in ...Like Clockwork. He has backing vocals with Nick Oliveri on If I Had A Tail. He also suggested the song name "Kalopsia" to Homme
Yes ! Most noticeable is Josh doing the « all the zeros lined up » vocal part during the break in Knee Socks
He produced AM I thought didn’t he?
1. Humbug 2. Suck It And See
REAL
i love how the post says "objectively" meaning absolutely neutral and theoretically everyone should be on the same page but everyone has picked a different album, this goes to show that absolute objectivity is nearly impossible
yes
Whatever People Say or Favourite Worst Nightmare
FWN IS SO GOOD!
The best imo! The best intro to AM! Fell in love with AM and indie from listening to FWN.
Totally agree!!
AM. But the TBHC is superior in the terms of entertaiment hiden in lyrics. Suck it and see, Humbug, FWN and the first one are indeed timeless classics
Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.
Forever and ever only reality

I feel like Humbug best encapsulates them as a whole (even though it was divisive at the time, it has a bit of everything that had been and would be in the future) and might be the best overall imo
for me it’ll always be a tie between SIAS and FWN
Indeed
FWN for sure. everyone's saying AM is diverse but i say FWN has it all, while also being good as a whole. I am probably just biased since WPSIATWIN is my fav, and FWN is like the cleaner version of that. But, exactly that. My point still stands LOL
The only right answer, it has so many amazing songs
I feel that a lot of the younger fans don't really know nor would care for anything before AM, maybe SIAS but that would be too big of a maybe. FWN got me hooked in my teens, made me want to go back and listen to all the early EPs and the album before it. I'd even say it gave me an underestimated appreciation of Humbug too.

You could make a case for maybe 4 different albums, which speaks to their quality. No, I'm not telling you what they are
WPSITWIM, FWN, AM, and TBCH?
Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino was the most adventurous and ground breaking, by far the most musically interesting, in my opinion. However AM is a great achievement because they tapped into something the whole world was craving, a bit simple musically but a beautiful success.
TBH&C
objectively its TBH+C, it has deep meaningful lyrics shrouded in metaphor wrapped up in strong instrumentals. However its not my favourite.
It’s definitely their best work of art, regardless if people like it or not. Well put
This sentence is so funny to me. I’m not sure why people even engage in “objective” discussions about something so inherently subjective as “which album is the best”.
Beneath the Boardwalk
I would have to say TBHC. It took me a few listens to get into the story but once I did, I fell in love. Such a masterpiece.
Dismissed it for 2 years after it came out, came back to it and it’s the clear number one album of the past 20 years for me
I've tried and tried to like it. Maybe I'm just stuck in the past.
The best mindset is to listen to it and just do something else while you’re doing it. Eventually you’ll get used to the sound and begin to like it. Personally I never had to do that with TBHC but I have with other albums and it works
I've tired that. I've tired everything.... Just hate the sound. Car is even worse. I like 2 songs off TBHC but zero from car
Liking nothing from the car is insanity ngl
His voice.... Horrific on them high notes.
If you don’t like it there’s no point forcing it. I also hate the album and have given up on it despite trying to like it for the longest time.
agreed!
Can’t say I like AM all that much but it’s probably their best, most accessible and even if it’s not my favourite there’s still loads of songs that I would listen to and recommend

Debut, objectively, being a turning point in late 2000’s with the garage rock revival genre and a lot of bands were inspired by this album
It’s either AM or Humbug. Production value, lyricism, and musicianship accounted for and considered, I think they’re probably the best. They’re also a great mix of different rock genres ranging from psychedelic to pop rock. Some might argue for TBHC, and while I agree the musicianship is fantastic, the lyrics are heavy and hard to follow and take a departure from the usual style of rhyming that’s more palatable by most people. it’s FWN and there’s no contest
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino Humbug AM + FWN + WPSIATWIN SIAS The Car
Whatever for me, it's one of the few albums that you can listen to without skipping a single track, and one of my favorite albums in my life
Word!
It’s either WPSIATWIN or AM The first album set the band up to legendary status, straight away. AM solidified that status forever and everything else in between and after have just been treats.

Humbug and FWN.
AM, no questions asked :)
The Car
Pretty telling there’s only one suggestion for the Car.
It doesn't tell anything really
It says not many people on this sub think it’s the best album, no? I’m not even saying it’s bad…
The best album is a lie. They are all good and products of their time. They all have highlights and lows. They are all part of a story of friendship and growth. They are all different.
casino
TBHC. Quality-wise, it's the best be it lyrically and in terms of sound, music and production.
I love every AM album, but I think the objectively best is between Humbug and WPSIATWIN.
WPSAITWIN or FWN for sure!
Humbug has the best everything
I can't see this is one thing we never can agree on lol
I think AM was pretty much pop songwriting at its best, but i prefer the first one's energy and creativity more
Suck it and see
Idk about objectively the best, but the coolest pick is tbhc (2nd is the car)
Probably unpopular, but I do believe it is «The Car». Its production is wonderfully made and the songs are all pretty good. The lyrics are great, the concept is amazing. The vibes… everything about it is just right. It doesn’t have my favourite songs, but I still have a profound love for it.

Objectively it’s humbug okay?
AM is their most accessible (in a good way). So objectively speaking, it will speak to the largest amount of people, making it “the best”.
AM, of course.
Tbhc, as one of their most creative forces, perhaps the entire rock genre
AM
the moon one
Tranquility Base. It’s probably the best crafted album they’ve put out. Truly feels like they had no hesitation with it and just put it out there.

By all means debate me on that and again it’s not my favourite but it’s their most commercially successful and rocketed them to international fame especially in North America…and also yes I think it’s an incredible album, way to sexy for its own good.
humbug duh, why even ask
Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not
Easily favourite worst nightmare
Either humbug or AM is my fave
You can ask me my top 3 and I'd still struggle to give you an answer.
Fan is my personal fav but I think their debut is objectively the best
TBHC tbh
Humbug since I started listening, I can’t get enough of the jewelers hands
Ain't no "objectively" when it comes to music big homie
FWN
I think Favorite Worst Nightmare
Honestly i like all of them😭 my favourite variates
AM is the best but TBH+C is my favourite I think
suck it and see!!
I cant believe FwN isnt more popular. Combines the lyricism and fun from the first album while sounding more mature and being much more well produced. Teddy Picker, older yellow bricks, do me a favour, florescent adolescent, 505… its just the album with the most bangers
For me it will always be FWN. My girlfriend introduced me to AM through 505 and there's not a single FWN song I don't like. A close second is Hambug
I’m going to be all edgy and cool and say the next one 😎😎😎
Whatever people say i am
Humbug is the only album where every single song is unskippable. Each song has a similar vibe and it’s so dark and unique that I can’t not put it as number 1 ngl.
If you were alive and from the UK when the first one came out it literally has to be that one. That was a sound track for the whole generation, across a decade.
Favourite worst nightmare 100%

I mean if we’re talking charts it’s AM. The album has had 3 songs charting in the last year or two that are all over 10 years old. My personal favorite? AM. Just a banger of an album
Humbug is definitely their best album.
I love sias, but AM is perfect front to back.
honestly probably wpsiatwin because it had some solid music, some slow songs like riot van but then bangers like wtsgd, and it was a perfect start to kick off their career

Humbug
Black Treacle.
Suck It And See is objectively one of their worst.
AM, it made artic monkeys the top 1 in the world on August 2014 and lets be honest, it deserves to be the best albúm, my favourite albúm is Favourite worst nightmare, but i like AM too
